Why is the concept of the heart important in understanding spiritual darkness?

Answered in 1 source

The heart is viewed as the seat of spiritual darkness, where false beliefs and reliance on self take root, leading to rejection of God's truth.

Throughout the sermon, the heart is defined as the true ‘seat of the beast,’ where the influence of darkness and false religion takes hold. Matthew 6:22-23 speaks to the importance of the eye of faith, which perceives spiritual truth; if the eye is evil, the entire body is filled with darkness. Similarly, if the heart is overwhelmed by darkness, a person is unable to see or comprehend the light of the gospel, remaining ensnared by their sin and false beliefs. This understanding underscores the need for a divine intervention from Christ, who is the stronger man that can overcome the darkness within the heart.
