Why is the concept of the old cross important for Christians?

Answered in 1 source

The old cross symbolizes death to sin and self, demanding total surrender to Christ for true discipleship.

The significance of the old cross is multi-faceted; it represents a call to death—not only the physical death of Jesus but also the spiritual death of the believer to sin and worldly desires. As noted in Galatians 6:14, true faith in Christ crucifies the believer to the world and the world to him. This cross leads to new life in Christ; it requires the believer to deny themselves and bear their own cross as they follow Jesus. The old cross is indeed offensive to the world, challenging the very notions of self-sufficiency and pride that so many cling to. Without embracing the old cross’s demands, one cannot experience the true transformative power of the Faith.
