Why is the cross central to understanding grace?

Answered in 1 source

The cross is central because it reveals both God's justice and mercy in providing salvation through Christ's sacrifice.

The cross is the focal point of grace because, at Calvary, God's character is fully revealed. It shows His unbearable holiness and justice, satisfied through the sacrificial death of His perfect Son for our sins. The cross demonstrates that God is just in punishing sin while simultaneously being the justifier of those who have faith in Jesus (Romans 3:26). The thief on the cross exemplifies this truth, as he received grace in a moment of utter brokenness and need. Thus, the cross serves as the means of our redemption, anchoring the doctrine of grace by illustrating that salvation is entirely dependent on Christ's finished work, not on our own merits.
