Why is the cross of Christ central to Christianity?

Answered in 2 sources

The cross is central because it embodies the sacrificial work of Christ, resulting in redemption and reconciliation with God.

The cross of Christ stands at the heart of the Christian faith as it represents the culmination of God's redemptive plan. In 1 Corinthians 1:18, Paul states that the message of the cross is seen as foolishness by those who are perishing, but to those being saved, it is the power of God. This paradox is critical; the cross not only signifies Christ's death but also His victorious resurrection and the justification of believers. Additionally, the cross is a reminder of God’s perfect justice and love—justice in that sin is punished, and love in that Christ willingly bore that punishment for His people. The theology surrounding the cross assures us that our salvation is complete in Christ, dismantling all reliance on human merit.
