Why is the law given if we cannot keep it?

Answered in 1 source

The law is given to show us our sin and lead us to Christ for grace and salvation.

The law, as presented in Scripture, serves multiple purposes, the foremost being to reveal our sinfulness. Romans 3:20 states, 'For by the law is the knowledge of sin.' The law was never intended to provide a means for salvation but to demonstrate our inability to attain righteousness on our own. It leads us to recognize our need for a Savior. This aligns with the doctrine of total depravity in Reformed theology, which teaches that apart from God’s grace, we are incapable of fulfilling the law and must rely on Christ's perfect obedience and sacrifice for our salvation.
