Why is the ministry of the Word more important than social issues?

Answered in 1 source

The ministry of the Word addresses spiritual needs, which surpasses material concerns.

In Acts 6, the apostles made a critical declaration prioritizing the ministry of the Word over addressing social issues directly. They stated, 'It is not reason that we should leave the word of God and serve tables' (Acts 6:2). This highlights a vital principle in Reformed theology: while caring for physical needs is important, it must always be subordinate to the spiritual nourishment provided through God's Word. The 'social gospel' often emphasizes meeting physical needs without addressing the spiritual condition of individuals; however, the apostles affirmed that the primary mission of the church is to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ. Ultimately, spiritual needs must be addressed first, as it is the gospel that brings true life and transformation.
