Why is the recognition of sin important for Christians?

Answered in 2 sources

Recognizing one’s sin is essential for true repentance and understanding the need for Christ’s sacrifice.

For Christians, acknowledging one's sin is vital as it lays the groundwork for genuine repentance and faith in Jesus Christ. According to Henry Mahan, the first lesson a person must learn is that they are a great sinner, which is a difficult yet essential truth (Matthew 9:13). This recognition leads to a deeper understanding of God’s grace. The Apostle Paul, in Romans 7:24, expressed the struggle of sin, identifying himself as a 'wretched man' in need of deliverance. This crying out in acknowledgment of sin is what allows believers to fully appreciate the grace and mercy offered through Christ’s atoning sacrifice. Knowing one’s depravity brings about humility and a reliance on God for salvation, as opposed to self-righteous attempts to earn favor.
