Why is the story of Mephibosheth significant?

Answered in 1 source

Mephibosheth's story illustrates God's grace and mercy towards unworthy sinners.

Mephibosheth represents all of us who are spiritually crippled and undeserving of God's favor. His encounter with David in 2 Samuel 9 shows the depth of God's mercy, as David sought him out despite his shameful background. When Mephibosheth expected punishment, he received kindness based on David's covenant with Jonathan. This mirrors God’s grace extended toward sinners who, by nature, are His enemies. Romans 5:10 states, 'For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son.' This story encourages believers to understand their position in Christ—we are welcomed at the King's table, not because of our worthiness, but because of Christ’s sacrifice.
