Why is total depravity an important concept for Christians?

Answered in 1 source

Total depravity underscores our need for divine grace, as every aspect of humanity has been affected by sin, necessitating salvation through Christ.

Total depravity is pivotal in the Reformed understanding of sin and grace. It asserts that every part of human nature—mind, will, emotions—is corrupted by sin, rendering us incapable of seeking God on our own. This concept is highlighted in the narrative of Joseph and his brothers, who, despite their wrongdoings, needed to be brought to a point of total submission and awareness of their guilt before they could receive mercy. Without recognizing our total depravity, we cannot fully appreciate the necessity of Christ's redemptive work. Ephesians 2:1-5 encapsulates this, illustrating how we were dead in trespasses and sins yet made alive together with Christ, showcasing God's grace that saves the utterly helpless. Understanding our depravity helps deepen our appreciation for the grace and love of God in the gospel.
