Why is trusting in ourselves for righteousness dangerous?

Answered in 1 source

Trusting in ourselves leads to self-righteousness, which distances us from God’s grace and mercy.

Trusting in our own efforts to obtain righteousness is fundamentally flawed, as the Bible clearly states there is none righteous, no not one (Romans 3:10). In Luke 18, Jesus contrasts the prayers of a self-righteous Pharisee and a humble publican, illustrating that reliance on personal merit leads to spiritual bankruptcy. The Pharisee, despite his outwardly religious life, trusted in his actions rather than seeking God's mercy. This contrasts sharply with the publican’s humble plea for grace. Such self-reliance not only obscures our need for Christ but also invites condemnation, as it leads to an emphasis on works rather than faith. Our only hope is found in Christ, our sole mediator who grants us the righteousness we lack.
