Why is understanding Christ as the second Adam important?

The comparison between Adam and Christ is critical within Christian theology. Just as Adam represented humanity in his disobedience, leading to sin and death for all, Christ represents believers through His obedience, leading to righteousness and life. Romans 5:18 highlights this parallel: 'Therefore, as by the offense of one, judgment came upon all men; even so by the righteousness of one, the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.'
