Why is understanding false doctrine important for Christians?

Answered in 2 sources

Understanding false doctrine is crucial for Christians as it serves as a spiritual poison that leads believers away from the truth.

Norm Wells warns against the dangers of false doctrine which, although it may contain elements of truth, is ultimately poisonous to the soul. Just as a little poison can contaminate a pot of food (2 Kings 4:38-41), a small measure of error inserted into the truth can lead to spiritual ruin. The importance of doctrinal purity lies in recognizing that God's people cannot settle for anything less than the full, untainted truth that is found in the gospel. The Scriptures encourage believers to discern teachings that align with God’s Word to foster growth in the faith and to avoid the traps set by misleading doctrines that distort God's character and His plan of salvation.
