Why is understanding human depravity essential in Christian theology?

In Christian theology, acknowledging human depravity emphasizes that all are fallen and spiritually dead in trespasses and sins (Ephesians 2:1). Without this understanding, one may falsely assume that they can attain righteousness through their efforts. The Bible states that no man seeks after God (Romans 3:11), which underscores the necessity of divine intervention through grace. Recognizing our state as helpless sinners leads us to grasp the depth of God's mercy in saving us through Jesus Christ, who fulfilled the law perfectly on our behalf.
