Why is understanding our previous state without Christ important?

In Ephesians 2:12, Paul illustrates that prior to knowing Christ, we were without hope and without God. Recognizing this former condition allows us to grasp the depths of God’s grace in salvation. It teaches humility, showing us that we could do nothing to earn our place in God’s kingdom. By acknowledging our past alienation, we can more fully appreciate the enormity of Christ's sacrifice and the love God has shown in bringing us near. This understanding not only encourages gratitude but also strengthens our faith as we reflect on the transformation from being 'far off' to being fully accepted as sons and daughters in Christ.
