Why is understanding our total depravity important?

Answered in 1 source

Understanding total depravity is crucial as it reveals our complete inability to come to God without His sovereign grace.

Total depravity teaches that every aspect of our being is affected by sin, rendering us incapable of turning to God without His intervention. As articulated in the sermon using John 8, those who do not hear God's word do so because they are spiritually deafened by their sinful nature. Romans 3:10-12 states, 'there is none righteous, no, not one: there is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.' Recognizing our depravity underscores our need for divine grace, emphasizing that salvation is solely by God's initiative and mercy, dispelling any notion of self-sufficiency in our redemption.
