Why is understanding sonship important for Christians?

Answered in 5 sources

Understanding our identity as sons of God is crucial as it shapes our relationship with God and influences how we live as His children.

The concept of sonship is foundational in understanding our relationship with God. In Galatians 4:4-7, Paul notes that because we are sons, God has sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, allowing us to cry out, 'Abba, Father.' This intimacy with God reflects the grace bestowed upon us; we are no longer slaves under the law, but beloved children with a direct relationship with our Heavenly Father. Recognizing our status as sons frees us from the fear of punishment and the burdensome aspects of trying to earn God’s approval through works. Instead, it encourages reliance on God’s grace and the understanding that our inheritance in Christ is secure, which motivates us to live in a way that reflects His love and character.
