Why is understanding the bad news important before the good news?

Answered in 1 source

Understanding the bad news about sin and death is essential to appreciate the good news of salvation.

The sermon highlights that the gospel literally means good news, but good news is only relevant in light of bad news. The bad news is that humanity is born into sin and separation from God due to Adam's disobedience in the garden (Genesis 2-3). Until one recognizes their dire state—spiritually dead and cut off from God—only then can the good news of Christ's redemptive work be genuinely understood and appreciated. In Christ, believers are offered reconciliation and eternal life, essential elements of the gospel message.
