Why is understanding the heart important for Christians?

Answered in 10 sources

Understanding the heart is crucial as it encompasses our understanding, affections, and will—all essential for true faith and repentance.

The heart, according to Scripture, represents the whole person, including the intellect, emotions, and will. Proverbs 4:23 teaches us to 'guard our hearts, for from it flow the springs of life.' This underscores the importance of having a heart oriented towards God, as true faith involves more than intellectual assent; it requires a transformation of the will and affections. When God calls us to turn to Him with all our heart, He is calling us to bring our entire being into alignment with Him, recognizing our desperate need for a new heart that only He can provide, as discussed in Joel and echoed throughout the Scriptures.
