Why is understanding the law and its limitations important for Christians?

The law, in its perfection, reveals the holiness of God and our utter inability to meet His standards. The law was not designed to save but to show us our need for a Savior. In Galatians 3:24, Paul explains that the law acts as a schoolmaster to bring us to Christ.
