Why is understanding the Old Testament important for Christians?

Answered in 16 sources

Understanding the Old Testament is vital for Christians because it reveals God's plan for salvation and points to Christ throughout its narratives.

The Old Testament is foundational for understanding the entirety of Scripture and God's redemptive plan. As Henry Mahan noted, Jesus taught His disciples about Himself from the Scriptures of the Old Testament, stating that all the prophets spoke concerning Him (Luke 24:25-27). This shows that the Old Testament sets the stage for the coming of Christ and His work of salvation. The sacrifices, prophecies, and historical accounts serve as types and shadows leading to the fulfillment found in Jesus. Without a solid grasp of these texts, Christians may miss the depth of meaning in the New Testament and the complete narrative of God's grace and sovereignty in salvation.
