Why is union with Christ important for salvation?

Answered in 3 sources

Union with Christ is essential for salvation because it grants believers His righteousness and the assurance of eternal life.

The doctrine of union with Christ underpins the Reformed understanding of salvation. Through this union, believers are justified and made righteous before God, as 1 Corinthians 6:11 states that believers are washed and justified in the name of the Lord Jesus. This union means that what is true of Christ is also true of the believer; His righteousness is imputed to them, allowing them to stand before God accepted and clean. As explained in Romans 8:1, there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, which reinforces the importance of trusting in Him alone for salvation. This union not only provides salvation but also transforms the believer's life through the work of the Holy Spirit, as they are continually shaped into the likeness of Christ.
