Why should Christians avoid genealogies?

Answered in 1 source

Genealogies can lead to pride and distraction from the gospel, which teaches that our identity is found in Christ, not in our ancestry.

The Bible warns against the pursuit of genealogies in 1 Timothy 1:4, indicating that such inquiries are often more about personal pride than genuine knowledge. Questions regarding our lineage can lead us into vain discussions that do not edify or focus on God's truth. As Christians, our true lineage—being born again into the family of God—far surpasses any earthly genealogy, affirming that we are heirs of the grace given to us in Jesus Christ. Thus, we must prioritize our identity in Christ over ancestral lines.
