Why should Christians avoid legalism?

Answered in 3 sources

Christians should avoid legalism because it undermines the grace of God and leads to a false understanding of salvation.

Legalism is a belief that adherence to rules or rituals can earn God's favor, which contradicts the doctrine of grace central to the gospel. In Exodus 32, the people engaged in idolatrous practices while thinking they were worshiping God. Just as the Israelites mixed false worship with true, legalism mixes human works with divine grace. Paul warns in Philippians 3:3 to 'put no confidence in the flesh', emphasizing that salvation is entirely a work of Christ, not dependent on our merit. Legalism creates a burden of guilt and distances believers from the true freedom found in Christ's atoning work, as salvation is solely by grace through faith.
