Why should Christians not rely on works for salvation?

Answered in 1 source

Relying on works for salvation contradicts the essence of grace and the sufficiency of Christ's sacrifice.

Christians are warned against relying on works for salvation because doing so negates the grace of God. In Galatians 2:21, Paul explicitly states that if righteousness comes through the law, then Christ died in vain. This assertion highlights that our attempts to earn salvation through works not only undermine the completion of Christ's atonement but also lead to spiritual bondage. The law demands perfection, and since none can fulfill its requirements, it exposes our need for a Savior. Therefore, true freedom and assurance come through faith alone, as believers rest in the finished work of Christ rather than their own imperfect efforts.
