Why should Christians submit to authorities?

Answered in 2 sources

Christians are called to submit to authorities as an expression of submission to God’s sovereign will.

Submission to authority is rooted in the biblical understanding of God's sovereignty, where Romans 13:1 states that all authority comes from God. In Titus 3:1, Paul instructs believers to be subject to principalities and powers, showing that obedience to civil authorities is a part of the Christian's witness. Even if those in authority are not godly, Christians recognize that submitting to authority reflects their ultimate submission to God. This obedience is not unconditional, however; when earthly authority conflicts with God's commands, believers must prioritize their duty to God, as exemplified by Daniel's refusal to obey a decree that contradicted his obligation to worship God. Thus, Christians balance their submission to authority with their commitment to God's law.
