Why should we not trust our conscience?

Answered in 2 sources

We should not trust our conscience because it can be corrupt and is affected by our fallen nature, leading to self-deception.

Scripture warns us against placing trust in our consciences due to the fallen and depraved nature of humanity. Hebrews 10:22 calls the conscience of fallen man an 'evil conscience,' implying that it is easily misled and can falsely comfort us when we are not right with God. The Apostle Paul illustrates this in Acts 23:1, where he claims to have lived in good conscience while actively persecuting Christians, showing that an unsanctified conscience can lead one to a false sense of righteousness. Therefore, our ultimate guide must be the Word of God, which provides a trustworthy standard of truth and morality, rather than the unreliable guidance of our own consciences.
