Good evening. Let's open tonight's
service with hymn number 38 from your Spiral Gospels hymn book. Number 38. Let's all stand together. Come, every sinner saved by grace,
you who by faith God's Son embrace. Tell all who hear your voice
below the debt of love to Christ you owe. Dear Lord, I lift my
praise to Thee, All that I ever hoped to be, I owe alone, O Christ,
to Thee. He left his father's throne above
and came to earth on wings of love. For us he lived the perfect
man and so fulfilled the law's demand. Dear Lord, I lift my
praise to Thee. All that I am, or hope to be,
I owe alone, O Christ, to Thee. Jesus endured his father's ire
and died at the appointed hour. What he endured, no Tom can tell,
to save our souls from death and hell. Dear Lord, I lift my
praise to Thee, all that I am or hope to be. I owe alone, O
Christ, to Thee. From death's dark grave our King
arose, And triumphed over all our foes. Up through the skies
the victor rode, And reigns on high our Savior God. Dear Lord, I lift my praise to
Thee All that I am or hope to be I owe alone, O Christ, to
Thee From heaven Christ will quickly come and bring his ransomed
people home. There we shall see his lovely
face and chant the praises of his grace. Dear Lord, I lift
my praise to Thee. All that I am or hope to be,
I owe alone, O Christ, to Thee. Please be seated. If you'd like to turn with me in
your Bibles to John chapter 17. Our scripture reading tonight
will be from the 17th chapter of John. I want to thank Robert
and Michael for being so faithful to prepare and preach Christ
for us this past Sunday. It's a blessing. Got a chance
to listen to both those messages on Sunday. Very, very grateful
for these men, as I know you are. John chapter 17, and we'll begin
reading in verse 19. Our Lord is interceding for us. This has been called Christ's
high priestly prayer as our intercessor. He's pleading with his father
on our behalf. We have an advocate with the
father, Jesus Christ, the righteous one. And in verse 19, he says,
and for their sakes, I sanctify myself. The Lord Jesus is the
only one that could do that. He's the only one that could
set himself apart. We're not capable of that. But
look at the rest of this verse. That they also might be sanctified
through the truth. And another way to interpret
the last part of that verse is that they also may be truly sanctified. Actually, that's probably a more
accurate translation. That they also may be truly sanctified. the setting apart of the Lord
Jesus Christ, as he set himself apart, all those that were in
him were set apart. So that the book of Hebrews says
we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus
Christ once for all. For by one offering, he hath
perfected forever them that are sanctified. What a glorious truth. The Lord
Jesus sanctifying himself is the hope that all those for whom
he died, all those chosen by God in the covenant of grace
were set apart in him. Let's pray together. Our merciful
heavenly father, we come into thy holy presence, looking in
faith to thy dear son, the holy one of Israel, the only one able
to sanctify himself. Lord, what great hope we have
in knowing that in Christ, we too have been set apart. We too
have been made holy. We too can say for as he is,
so are we in this world. He that sanctifies and they that
are sanctified are all as one. whereby he's not ashamed to call
them his brethren. Lord, we pray that you would
send your spirit in power. We pray that you would enlighten
the eyes of our understanding. We pray that you would increase
our faith. We pray, Lord, that you would forgive us of our sins
and enable us to rest all our hope on the glorious person and
the accomplished work of the Lord Jesus Christ. For it's in
his name we pray. Amen. Number 294 from the hardback
tenor. 294. Let's stand together again.
294. Savior, like a shepherd lead
us, much we need thy tender care. ? In thy pleasant pastures feed
us ? ? For our use thy folds prepare ? ? Blessed Jesus, blessed

me to Psalm 119. Psalm 119. I want to try to bring a message
tonight on the zeal of the Lord. The zeal of the Lord. I wish I was more zealous about
everything. I feel like I'm pretty much half-hearted
about everything I do. And the Lord was not that way. He was not that way. Look at
verse 139 of Psalm 119. My zeal hath consumed me because
my enemies have forgotten thy words. Now this is the passage
that the Lord quoted in John chapter two and also in Matthew
chapter 21. And unless John put the cleansing
of the temple way out of order, it seems like the Lord cleansed
the temple twice at the beginning of his ministry and at the end
of his ministry. But you remember he went in and
he made a court of whips and he chased out the money changers.
And he said, you've turned the house of God into a den of thieves. And you've merchandised men's
souls. You're selling the gospel. Nothing's
changed. The religious gathering houses
that men are in today are the same way. And the scripture says,
and the disciples remembered what the scripture said, that
the zeal of the Lord hath eaten me up. The Lord did that zealously. Now, we know that everything
that God requires, God must provide. and everything that he provides,
he provides in the person of the Lord Jesus Christ. And the
only thing he accepts is that which he provides in Christ. And so faith is looking to the
Lord Jesus Christ for all that God demands of me. God demands perfect faith, but
We're always in a place of saying, Lord, I believe, help thou mine
unbelief. God requires perfect love. 1 Corinthians chapter 13, love
is long-suffering, it's kind, it envies not, it vaunts not
itself, it's not puffed up, it does not behave unseemly, it
seeks not her own, it's not easily provoked, it thinketh no evil,
it never fails, Is that a good description of
your love? Not mine. Not mine. God requires perfect
sorrow that we truly be broken and repentant over our sin. But
how sorry are we really? The Lord Jesus Christ was full
of sorrow. He was a man of sorrows. The
Lord Jesus Christ loved God perfectly. The Lord Jesus Christ was that
one who the scripture calls true and faithful. He's the faithful
one. So you see what the Lord requires
from us, Christ provided. He provided perfect faith. He
provided perfect love. He provided perfect repentance.
He provided himself as the perfect sacrifice. And he was zealous
about everything he did. As I said, I don't know if you're
like me, but I feel pretty much half-hearted about most everything
I do. You know, people say, well, he
gave 110%. No, he didn't. No, he didn't. Or we say, you
know, I love you with all my heart. Truth is, we don't do
anything with all our heart, do we? We wear our loyalties,
our attentions, our affections are all so mangled and divided
that we cannot say that we are fully zealous about anything. What did Paul mean when he said
in Romans chapter seven, that which I would, I do not. And that which I would not, that
I do. What do you mean by that? What
do you mean when he said in that same chapter, to will is present
with me, but how to perform that which is good, I find not. What
do you mean by that? Well, he meant the same thing
that you would mean if you said that now. Believers understand
that. I would worship God perfectly
if I could. If I could, I would be zealous.
for the gospel all the time. I'd love God with all my heart,
all my soul, and all my mind if I could, but I can't. What
did he go on to say in that same chapter? This old man, oh, wretched man
that I am, who shall deliver me from the body of this death?
We carry this flesh with us, don't we? And so we're not capable
of loving anything with all of our hearts. We're not capable
of giving 100% to anything. We're just half-hearted pretty
much about everything we do. And the Lord requires that all
our hearts and all our minds and all our souls be devoted
to him all the time. That's what the Lord's saying
here. My zeal hath consumed me. It hath eaten me up. It hath
cut me off. What was he talking about? He's
talking about his zeal for God. If we could have this kind of
zeal, we'd never sin again. Lord, I don't want to sin. We would be sinless. We would
love God. We'd love our spouses and we'd
love each other. But our love is so divided in
our selfishness that we can't say that we're zealous about
anything. God requires perfect zeal. Wholeheartedness. And what God
requires, God had to provide. And he did. He provided it in
the Lord Jesus Christ. You see, when we understand this,
we come before the Lord and we say, Lord, to will is present
with me, but how to perform that which is good? I find it not
in myself. When you give me the faith to
set my affections on things above where Christ is seated at thy
right hand, I know that I have an advocate with the Father,
Jesus Christ, the righteous one. I know that I have one who lived
his life in perfect zeal for God. This is what John was speaking
of in first John chapter three, when he said, behold, Behold,
oh, look on this, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed
on us that we should be called the sons of God. Behold, now
we are the sons of God, he goes on to say in verse two, and it
doth not yet, it doth not yet appear what we shall be. But we know that when he shall
appear, We shall be like him for we shall see him as he is. Our love will be perfect. Our
sight will be perfect. We'll be without sin. Our zeal
for God will be wholehearted for the very first time when
we see him as he is and be made like him. You see, man-made self-righteous
religion is all about men trying to whip up more zeal in hopes
that they'll be able to convince God that they're really serious
about this. And the gospel, the gospel is
confessing our inability to be zealous as we ought and our hope
in the Lord Jesus Christ. as the one who said, my zeal
hath consumed me. It hath eaten me up. My zeal,
everything the Lord Jesus Christ did was first and foremost out
of his zeal for the glory of his father. We read from John
chapter 17 a minute ago. Let's turn back there in our
Bibles. In John chapter 17, Look at verse four. I have glorified
thee on the earth. I have finished the work which
thou has given me to do. And now, O father, glorify thou
me with thine own self, with the glory which I had with thee
before the world was. Everything he did was for the
glory of his father, for the glory of his grace. That's why
David said in Psalm 115, not unto us, O Lord, not unto us,
but into thy name be glory for thy mercy and for thy truth's
sake. And when we think about the zeal
of God, let us be careful not to err in making God to be like
us. For us, zeal is an emotion driven
by unstable feelings and circumstances. Not for the Lord Jesus Christ. Matter of fact, his name is called
zeal in the scriptures. Zeal for him was his character. It was his nature. It was who
he is. And the same thing's true about
his wrath, about his love, about his hatred, about his anger,
about his affections. You see, these are words that
we use to describe our fickled emotions that are up and down
and changing depending on how we feel or what our circumstances
might be. But for God, they are his essential
nature and they are all holy. The zeal is a holy zeal. His
hatred is a holy hatred. His love is a holy hatred. It's
perfect. Perfect. It's the characteristic
of his holy nature. David goes on in Psalm 115 to
say, they have a God. which has feet, but it can't
walk. It has eyes, but it can't see.
It has ears, but it can't hear. It has a mouth, but it can't
speak. And they that make them are like them. Man left to himself
will sit himself up on this throne of God. The Lord said, you thought
that I was altogether such a one as yourself. We come into this
world with this idol factory already working in our hearts,
don't we? And we imagine a God that's like us, maybe an improved
version of us, a version of us, a stronger one, but he's not
like us at all. That's what the word holy means.
Holy means that he's not anything like us. So when the Lord speaks
of his zeal, he's not talking about just a heightened commitment
that we wish that we would have, but he's talking about a zeal
that was perfect before God, a zeal that was holy, a zeal
that God looked on and was able to say, this is my beloved son. In him, I am well pleased. And that's what God requires.
And what God requires, God must provide. And what he's provided,
he's provided in Christ. And so in faith, we look to the
zeal of the Lord Jesus Christ for our acceptance before God. Our zeal, well, everything we
do is sinful, isn't it? Paul, in that same passage of
Matthew chapter seven, he said that we know that the law is
holy, but I am sinful, sinful, sold under sin. Everything about
me is sinful. Aren't you thankful for Romans
chapter eight, verse one, Thanks be to God. The last part of verse
chapter seven, thanks be to God through Christ Jesus, I am free.
There is now therefore no condemnation to them that are in Christ Jesus. So to be found in Him, to have
union with Christ, to have Christ as my sin bearer, as my substitute,
as my surety, as the one who stands in my stead before God. God requires a holy zeal. He's not looking to us to just
get more committed. And let me say this, we ought
to be more committed about everything we do. I'm ashamed that I have
to say everything I do is half-hearted. I doubt that it's even really
half-hearted. We ought to be more committed
in everything we do. We ought to be more committed
in our love for one another, our love for God, Our jobs? We ought to be. But don't think that you're going
to achieve some level of commitment and some level of zeal that's
going to impress God enough to make you acceptable in His sight.
That's not going to happen. It's not going to happen. The
Lord said, My zeal has consumed me. God looked at his zeal, his
holy zeal. It wasn't just a total commitment
of life. It was a holy zeal. Now, I don't
know what that means. I really don't. What is holiness? The only evidence that I have
that I believe that God's holy is that I know that there's nothing
in me like him. And I know that I can't present
anything to him that's going to make me acceptable in his
sight. What did the Lord say to Moses?
Take thy shoes from off thy feet for the ground on which thy stand
is holy ground. And that's the first reference
to the word holy in the Bible. Why was it holy? The Lord was
there. And what was God requiring of Moses? Expose your sinfulness,
your creatureness, your dependence upon me. Take your shoes off
your feet. Now, if we are men, we've got
feet of clay in our feet. Well, that's our connection to
this world, isn't it? We walk around in this world
on our feet and we wear shoes to insulate ourselves from this
world. But the Lord said, take your
shoes off. Oh, his feet are like fine brass
burnt in the oven. He's not, he's not like us. He's
holy. He's holy. The Lord's name is holy. Out of Jerusalem shall go forth
a remnant. and they that escape out of Mount
Zion for the zeal of the Lord of hosts shall do this. He's the zealous one of God.
Scripture says, and another word that comes from the same word
is the word jealous. Now jealousy for us, Proverbs
chapter six, verse 34 says, for jealousy is the rage of a man.
And it's, generally not a very good thing for us to become jealous,
is it? But his jealousy was holy. Turn with me to Isaiah chapter
59. Isaiah 59. My zeal hath consumed me. It's his zeal for the glory of
God that took him to the cross. It's his jealousy for Jerusalem
that took him to the cross. His zeal for his people. You have your Bibles open to
Isaiah 59. Look with me at verse 17. For he put on righteousness as
a breastplate. and a helmet of salvation upon
his head. And he put on garments of vengeance
for clothing and was clad with zeal as a cloak." Now, you know
who that's a prophecy of? That's Christ. He put on zeal
as a cloak. Our zeal comes and goes, doesn't
it? We get real zealous about something
and then we just kind of lose interest or, you know, find something
else. His zeal was perfect and his
zeal was holy. He put on zeal as a cloak. Now that's the cloak that you
and I need. That's his righteousness. We've got to be clothed in the
righteousness of Christ. When John saw the saints in glory
clad, clothed in white, he said, who are these? And you remember
what the Lord said? Oh, these are they who have washed
their robes and made them white in the blood of the lamb. That's the lamb slain. Robert,
you preached on Sunday that Christ is that lamb and God took the
fleece from that lamb and clothed Adam's nakedness. And that's
what he has to do for us. He has to clothe us in the righteousness
of Christ in order for us to have acceptance with God. He has zeal for his house. I
wish I was more zealous. You all know me. I want to be. I feel like the Lord's given
me a heart for the gospel and a heart for you and a heart for
preaching, but I'm standing here before you telling that I feel
half-hearted all the time. All the time. I wish I had more
zeal. The Lord's zeal for His church. And we get angry when we see,
when I hear men preaching a works gospel, When I hear men merchandising
men's soul and telling them, you gotta do this, and you gotta
do that, and you gotta do the other, and you pray this prayer,
and you accept Jesus, and you fill in the blank, whatever you
wanna say. It's circumcision, isn't it? And I get angry at
that. Why? Because they're deceiving,
they're lying to people. You get angry when somebody lies
to you? I mean, right now, we're having to listen to all these
politicians. I just have to turn it off, you know, just liars. But when the Lord saw what was
happening in his house of prayer, and he saw the merchandise of
the men's salts, he chased them out. And he said, the zeal of
God has consumed him. His heart burned with holy zeal
for his father's glory. You see, a works gospel robs
God of his glory. It robs God of his glory. If
salvation is of the Lord and he's done it all. If he's the
lamb that was slain before the foundation of the world, if he
bore in his body all the sins of all of his people and put
them away by the sacrifice of himself once and for all, if
he sanctified us by the sacrifice of himself once for all, if he
raised from the dead because we are justified, that's what
the scripture says. He was offered up for our offenses
and raised again because of our justification. God saw the travail
of his soul and was satisfied. God saw what he did and God was
pleased. He actually finished the work. Isn't that what he said in John
17? Father glorify thou me for I have finished the work which
thou gavest me to do. And what was the last thing the
Lord breathed before he bowed his mighty head on Calvary's
cross? It's finished. What's finished? Glorious that the very first
words that the Lord speaks that we have recorded in scripture.
When he was 12 years old and his mother and his left him in
Jerusalem in three days, they finally found, did you not know
that I must be about my father's business? What was his father's
business? For him to glorify his father,
for him to save his people, And he was zealous for that. Every
thought, every moment of his life, everything that he did,
he did it in such a way as to please his father and glorify
his father. You and I haven't done anything.
We haven't had a prayer. I haven't preached a sermon. You haven't done anything for
anybody that's going to satisfy God. But the zeal of the Lord
did. The zeal of God has eaten me
up. It has consumed me. It has cut
me off. Ephesians chapter one, three
times in that chapter, it says that he did it all for the praise
of the glory of his grace. Everything he did was for the
praise. of the glory of the grace of God. The zeal of God. I have glorified thee on the
earth. I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do, and
now, Father, glorify thou me with thee, with the glory that
we had before the world began. Before sin he entered in. before
man perverted the gospel. Here's the good news, brethren. Another word of good news. The
Lord's zealous for His people. He's zealous for the glory of
His Father. He's zealous for Jerusalem. Turn with me. We studied
the book of Zechariah a year or so ago. Turn with me to that.
Next to the last book in the Old Testament. Turn with me to
Zechariah chapter 1. Zechariah chapter one. The word jealous and the word
zealous are, well, many places in the Old Testament, same word,
same Hebrew word. The scripture says that we, we
serve a jealous God. He's jealous for the glory of
his father and he's jealous for his people. And verse 13 of Zechariah chapter
one says, and the Lord answered the angel that talked with me
with good words and comfortable words. Isn't that what we need
to hear? Lord, I need some good words. I need some comfortable
words. I listen to the words of man and I get disquieted. I get uncomfortable. Look at
verse 14. So the angel that communed with
me said unto me, cry thou saying, thus saith the Lord of hosts,
I am jealous for Jerusalem and for Zion with a great jealousy. Now again, this is his holy nature. This is not some sort of sinful,
you know, our jealousy is. No, this is a jealous God. Look, you're there in Zechariah,
turn over to chapter eight, chapter eight, and look at verse, look at verse two. Well, verse
one says, again, the word of the Lord of hosts came to me
saying, thus sayeth the Lord of hosts, I was jealous for Zion
with a great jealousy. I was jealous for her with great
fury. Thus saith the Lord, I am returned
unto Zion and I will dwell in the midst of Jerusalem and Jerusalem
shall be called a city of truth. A city of truth. Could it be a city? The Lord
Jesus Christ is truth. I am the way. I am the truth. I am the life. No man can come
to the Father except by me. And when Pilate said to him,
do you not know that I have the power to crucify you or to deliver
you or to let you free? And what the Lord say, you have
no power at all except that which has been given to you from heaven.
If I had one statement to make to the politicians today, that's
what I would say to them. You have no power at all except
for that which is given to you from heaven. They're puppets in our God's
hands. What a comforting thing that
is. They're not calling the shots. They're not controlling the circumstances. They're God's servants and they
will do what God has them to do. Isaiah chapter 59. Will you turn
with me back to Isaiah? Chapter 59. The Lord saved us in zeal. Verse 16, and he saw that there
was no man. There was no man to fix this
problem. There was no man to satisfy the
justice of God. There was no man able to save
sinners. There was no man able to be zealous
before God in such a way as to be able to please God with their
zeal. There was no man that believed
God. There was no man, no man, no
man could save himself and no man could save another man. And he wondered that there was
no intercessor. Therefore, his arm brought salvation
unto him and his righteousness. It sustained him, for he put
on righteousness as a breastplate and a helmet of salvation upon
his head. And he put garments of vengeance for clothing and
was clad with zeal as a cloak." Here's the Lord's work. Here's
his work. He saved us in zeal. When he
went to Calvary's cross, his only concern was to fulfill the
purpose for which God had sent him to glorify the father and
to save his people. There was nobody else that could
do it. He had to do it. And he did it. The zeal of the
Lord performed it. Let me show you another passage.
Turn with me to Isaiah chapter nine. You're familiar with this
passage. It's often read around Christmas
time, but I want you to look at the verse after the verse
that's most often quoted. In Isaiah chapter nine, verse
six, for unto us, a child is born. Unto us, a son is given. And the government shall be upon
his shoulders. And that's our government too.
All governments are upon his shoulder. Take comfort in that,
my brother. Things may not turn out the way
we want them to, but they'll turn out the way God purposed
them to. And that's all that matters.
The government shall be upon his shoulder and his name shall
be called wonderful. counselor, the mighty God, the
everlasting father, the prince of peace. There's the Lord Jesus.
And when he came into this world, the angels announced his birth
unto you is born this day in the city of David, a savior,
which is Christ the Lord. And they praise God. Look at
the next verse. And of the increase of his government,
His government. You remember the vision that
Nebuchadnezzar had of the figure that had a head of gold and arms
and chest of silver and belly of brass and legs of iron. And
those are the nations that have ruled the world through the history
of the world. And then there was feet of mixed
with iron and clay. And that's where we are now.
That's where we are now. They're just iron and clay. What
is that a mixture of? What's the kingdom of God and
the kingdom of man? And then there was a rock cut
out of a mountain without the hands of a man. And that rock
came and smashed that whole thing. And then it grew into a great
mountain of its own. That's, that's the kingdom of
God. It's his kingdom. These kingdoms
of man are all fitted for destruction. Every single one of them. And
much as we're thankful for the freedoms we have in this country,
this is not a Christian country and it's not going to last. But
the kingdom of God is. You see, we're not hanging our
hopes on the government of any country. We're hanging our hopes on his
government. Look what he says. And of the
increase of his government and peace, there shall be no end.
Every other country has either come to an end or will come to
an end. His kingdom, there shall be no end upon the throne of
David and upon his kingdom to order it. His kingdom, Robert,
is ordered in all things and it's sure. Everything necessary
to establish his kingdom was accomplished by the Lord Jesus
Christ. I have finished the work which
thou gavest me to do. I have established justice and
righteousness. I have saved my people. and to establish it with judgment
and with justice from henceforth ever forever. There's no justice
in this world. Not really. Only in the kingdom
of God is there perfect justice. And that justice was established
when the Lord Jesus Christ offered himself to his father, not to
us. He offered himself to his father
to put away the sins of his people. And God said, judgment has established,
been established. Now look at the last phrase in
this verse, the zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this. will perform this. Oh, aren't
you thankful? Again, man-made religion is all premised
on trying to get folks to be more zealous, be more committed
in hopes that you can achieve a level of zeal that will earn
you favor with God. Ought we to be more zealous?
Yeah. But I fear that the more zealous we become, the more half-hearted
we will see ourselves to be. Ain't that the way it works? The more committed we are something
to something, the more we realize how uncommitted we are. The zeal of the Lord. consumed
him. And God's pleased with him. And
he made his house a house of prayer. What is prayer? It's sinners who cannot satisfy
the demands of God's righteousness, of God's zeal, of God's love,
of God's holiness. It's sinners vowing themselves
independence and pleading with the Lord to represent them, to
save them, to stand in their stead, to be what God requires
them to be that they're not able to be. And that's what this is,
a house of prayer. May God give us that spirit of
grace to take our shoes off, expose our creature-ness, and
depend upon the Lord Jesus Christ, for he's the one who was zealous. I mean zealous. Holy, holy zeal. His zeal's the only zeal that
God's pleased with. Our merciful heavenly Father,
bless your word. to our hearts, increase our faith,
forgive us of our sin. We ask it in Christ's name, amen. 352, let's stand together, number
352. Jesus, lover of my soul, let
me to thy bosom fly, while the nearer waters roll, while the
tempest still is high. ? Hide me, O my Savior, hide
? ? Till the storm of life is past ? ? Safe into the haven,
God ? ? O receive my soul at last ? ? Other refuge have I
none ? ? Hangs my helpless soul on thee ? ? Levi, leave me not
alone ? ? Still support and comport me ? ? All my trust on thee is
staying ? All my help from thee I bring, Cover my defenseless
head With the shadow of thy wing. Thou, O Christ, art all I want,
More than all in thee I find, Raise the fallen, cheer the faint,
heal the sick and lead the blind. Just and holy is thy name. I am all unrighteousness. False and full of sin I am. ? Thou art full of truth and
grace ? ? Plenteous grace with Thee is found ? ? Grace to cover
all my sin ? ? Let the healing streams abound ? ? Make and keep
me pure within ? Thou of life, the fountain heart, freely let
me take of Thee. Spring Thou up within my heart,
rise to all eternity.
