God's justice is fully satisfied in the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross.
The justice of God was satisfied only once, namely when the Lord Jesus Christ bore the full weight of God's wrath at Calvary. Throughout history, various judgments have been executed, but none of these serve to satisfy divine justice. As stated in Zechariah 13:7, God commands the sword of justice to awaken, which signifies that true justice was only fulfilled through the suffering of Christ. In Isaiah 53, we learn that it was Christ’s travail that brought satisfaction to God’s justice, demonstrating that His death alone justifies the ungodly.
Zechariah 13:7, Isaiah 53:10-11
The sufficiency of Christ's sacrifice is affirmed by God’s satisfaction in Isaiah 53 and His fulfillment of the law.
Christ’s sacrifice is sufficient for atonement because it satisfies God’s holy justice, which no other act can accomplish. In Isaiah 53:10, it states that it pleased the Lord to bruise Him, indicating that God accepted Jesus’ sacrifice as just payment for sin. The uniqueness of Christ’s offering—His obedience and sinless nature—ensured that justice was served once, making Him the perfect Lamb of God. Consequently, through faith in Him, believers are justified before God, as nothing else can meet the demands of divine justice.
Isaiah 53:10, Romans 3:26
Understanding God’s justice helps Christians appreciate the significance of Christ’s sacrifice and their salvation.
Understanding God's justice fosters a deep appreciation for the gravity of sin and the enormity of Christ's sacrifice. Without grasping the nature of divine justice, one might misinterpret the seriousness of sin and thus underestimate the magnitude of Christ’s redemptive work. In the sermon, it was emphasized that judgment alone, such as that seen in various biblical accounts, does not equate to the satisfaction of justice, as justice was fully achieved only through the death of Jesus. This understanding reinforces the need for faith in Christ and highlights the grace afforded to believers, who have their sins atoned for through His blood.
