Let's take our Bibles and turn
with me to the book of Exodus chapter 2. Exodus chapter 2. As we have been going through
the book of Hebrews on Wednesday evenings, Last study or two, we've been
dealing with Moses, the faith of Moses, the faith of Moses'
parents. And as I was reading this particular
passage, Exodus 2, in particular, verses 5 through 10, as I was looking at that passage,
I saw something in that passage that I'd like to share with you
this morning. I know this according to the
word of our Lord. When He spoke concerning the
Scriptures, this is what He said, They are they which testify of
Me. Now, he was talking to a group
of Jews concerning the Old Testament. That's what they had. They had
the Old Testament. And these Jews, they were searching
the Scriptures. He searched the Scriptures. But
he explained to them what they were actually doing. He said,
you search the Scriptures, and in them, Ye think that ye have eternal
life. And they are they that testify
of me." What they were doing, they were looking into the Scriptures
and seeing the law, these commands that God was setting forth, and
they thought that they were able to keep that law. Like that rich
young ruler who came to the Lord. The Lord asked him what Scripture
said. He started naming off the commandments. He said, I've kept
all these from my youth up. Can you imagine man or woman? I mean, I can. I can imagine
that. I've never killed anybody. I can't think of anything right
off the bat. I better not think very long, but I can't think
of anything that I've stolen. I probably have. But I can't
think of it right now. I could justify myself if the Lord
had not given me a heart to know and see Him. But the Lord told him, the old,
old Jews, they said, these Scriptures that you're reading, That you
think you're establishing a righteousness before God in keeping. They are
they that testify of me. Now here's the Scriptures. The Scriptures declare the glory
of God. in the person of the Lord Jesus
Christ. And if we desire to know what
God Almighty has to say about the Lord Jesus Christ, we search
the Scriptures. Now, like I said this morning,
earlier, there is no voice from heaven. There was. God did speak
from heaven. On the Mount of Transfiguration
at the baptism by the Lord, a voice was heard from heaven. This is
My beloved Son in whom I am well pleased. Hear ye Him. There's
no prophets anymore that proclaim forth tell. This is what we have. This is it right here. We have
the Scriptures. This is God's Word. This is all that we will ever
have now. There will never be any other
revelation. This is it. This is the Word
of God. Search it. Search it. Search it diligently. Search
it prayerfully. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal
Christ in that Scripture. Lord, I'm a feeble creature. I'm a son of the dust. Lord, You wrote this. Lord, this is Your Word. Lord,
You alone know. Lord, would You open my eyes?
Would You give me understanding? He said, ask. It will be given. You don't have because you don't
ask. Ask! Knock! Seek! I know that He's
the pearl of great price. I know He is. I know that He
is the treasure. And I want to see Him. I want to hear from the Lord
today. I know that He's here. I believe
that. I believe that two or three are
gathered together in His name today. I believe that He's in
our presence. Now, I want us to look in Exodus
2, verses 5 to 10. And based on the words of our
Lord, You search the Scriptures, you search these Old Testament,
New Testament too. But at the time he said that,
just the Old Testament. They are they that testify of
me. Beginning with Moses. Exodus
is one of the books of Moses. Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers,
Deuteronomy. The books of Moses. Beginning
with Moses. And all the Scriptures. He expounded unto them all the
Scriptures, those things concerning Himself. Lord, I want to hear
from You today. Lord, I need some comfort. Lord,
I need to hear. I need refreshment. Lord, cause
me to drink from the fountain of life Himself. I desire to
see. the glory of God in the deliverance,
the rescue, the salvation of His people. Lord, I believe that
I'm going to see You soon. I truly believe that I'm going
to see You soon. And Lord, I need to be told by
You again. I need for Your Spirit to speak
to me again. Lord, I need to hear it again.
I know I heard before, but I need to hear it again. I ate breakfast
this morning. Lord willing, I need to eat lunch
and then supper. I need to eat. I know that the Scripture says
forth from our study in Hebrews that by faith, Moses had been
placed in an ark. It was just a little box. The Scripture says out of bulrushes,
just like grassy stuff that grow like, you know, cattails and
stuff like that kind of stuff. That Moses' mom and daddy, and
took some of this grassy bulrush and made an ark. And they pitched
it, put some pitch on it to make it float. And by faith, they
put Moses, that baby infant, in the river. And that river,
humanly speaking, would have been a place of certain death. But actually, according to the
Scriptures, it was the place of His greatest security. Salvation. Now I want you to remember as
we read these Scriptures, based on the Word of our Lord, this
is by Him. This is by Christ. These Scriptures,
they are they that testify of Me. Lord, show us Yourself here. Verse 5, Exodus 2, 5, And the
daughter of Pharaoh came down to wash herself at the river. And her maidens walked along
by the riverside, and when she saw the ark among the flags,
she sent her maid to fetch it. Now, if we're just talking about
history, if this is just something that happened, You know, hundreds
and hundreds and hundreds of years ago, it's just a story.
It's just a story. But this Word is alive. This Word is today. Salvation is today. Today is
the day of salvation. I've said before, when somebody
starts talking about, well, you know what, I was saved. Let's thank You, Christ, right
now. Yesterday's gone. Yesterday's gone. The faith that
God gave you is gone. I need faith cometh. I need faith
to come, come, come, come by hearing, by hearing, by hearing.
Lord, I need faith right now. I need faith. I need faith from
Your throne. I need faith by Your Spirit. I need faith to believe You.
This is a picture of salvation. Salvation. The salvation of God's
elect. And I know God has an elect.
I know. Someone asked Mr. Spurgeon one
time, why don't you just preach to the elect? He said, if you'll
put an E on their forehead, he said, I'll preach to just them.
But he said, I don't know who they are. But I believe that
God has an elect people. And I don't know who they are.
So I'm going to preach to everybody. It's like Brother Neal just read.
Choose life. Somebody said, well, you can't
do that. In the day of God's power, you
will. He'll make you willing. You'll call on Him because He
called on you. You'll choose Him because He
chose you. You'll love Him because He loved you first. Moses' delivery. I know this
was providential. It was ordained and guided by
the hand of Him who works, who worketh. Always working. All things after the counsel
of His own will. We're assured. I know this, that
God's will to save His people is going to be done. You know
what? Lord, help me to believe this.
Help me to believe this. I'll read this to you. John 17. Here's our Lord in His
high priestly prayer. John 17. "...as Thou hast given
Him power over all flesh, that He should give eternal life to
as many as Thou hast given Him." Do you know what's going on right
now in this world? You want to know what's going on? God is
ordering all these things just exactly the way they are. Just
exactly the way they are. And here's the reason He's doing
it. For the salvation of His elect. He's moving all these
things, all these nations, all these decisions. All things work
together for good to them that love God. To them who are called
according to His purpose. Lord, teach me that. The Scripture sets forth that
Almighty God is going to save His elect. He's going to save
them. The Scripture sets forth in verse
5, the daughter of Pharaoh came down. There's the first thing
I know. Moses, right here, is a picture
of God's sheep. God's chosen. God's elect. That daughter of Pharaoh, just
a type of what she did, preaches Christ. The Scripture says that
the daughter of Pharaoh came down to wash herself at the river. From the palace to this muddy
river. Out there in the weeds and her
coming down was for the accomplishment of God's purpose. The Lord's
will was going to be done. That little baby right there
was going to be the one that God was going to use to bring
the people of God out. He's going to take those people
from Egypt and He's going to take them, like Brother Neal
said, He didn't take them into Canaan, but He brought them through. Joshua brought them in. The law
was not going to bring them into Canaan. Grace brought them in. Christ brought them in. He's
going to take them. Out of this place, Egypt, how's
he going to do it? He's out there in a boat. He's
out there in that river. There's crocodiles. There's just
all kinds of stuff out there. What if that boat springs a leak? What if God Almighty kept that
baby just exactly where that baby was? And the Scripture says
that the daughter of Pharaoh came down. Our great Deliverer. Likewise,
John 6.38, He said, For I came down from heaven, not to do mine
own will, but the will of Him that sent me. This woman right
here, she came down ignorantly, but providentially. The Lord
works all things. It was God Almighty that put
in that woman's heart that morning I think I'll go down to the river.
I think I'll go down there and wash myself. I think I'm going
to go down there and take a bath. And I'll get my maids and we'll
all go down there. I think it would be just a good
morning to go down and bathe, get all fresh and done. The lot is laid into the lap,
but the disposing of it is of the Lord. Why did you do what
you did this morning? I think I'm going to just go
to church." Really? Almighty God brought you here. He brought you here to hear the
Word of God, and His Word is not going to return unto Him
void. It's going to accomplish the purpose for which it was
sent. God's will is going to be done. She came down ignorantly. Our Lord came down with the full
knowledge of His Father's will. But in both cases, God's will
was done. The counsel of the Lord shall
surely stand. I will do all of my pleasure. Moses was going to have to be
rescued out of that boat, out of that river. He was going to
have to have one that was going to come down. Ephesians 4, 9
and 10 says, now that He ascended, what is it that He also descended
first at the lower parts of the earth? He that descended is the
same also that He that ascended up, ascended up above all heavens
that He might fill all things. This is what that says. When
the Lord of glory ascended into heaven in the sight of His disciples,
and those two angels are standing there and said, you men of Galilee,
Why stand you gazing into the heavens? The same Jesus that
you see ascending up into heaven shall in likewise return. Just
like that. He's going to come back just like that. But the
one that ascended, he had to first descend. He had to come,
be made of a woman, made under the law, to finish the work of
redemption given him by the Father. He came down, humbled himself,
made himself of no reputation, Made sin he who knew no sin. Lifted up, as Moses lifted up
the serpent in the wilderness that his people might live. Moses,
as a type of God's elect, was delivered, first of all, by one
that came down. Why don't you look at the next
thing? Still verse 5. It says, the daughter of Pharaoh
came down to wash herself. And her maidens walked along
by the riverside, and when she saw the ark among the flags."
The next thing I know is that God's people are rescued or delivered
by one that looked on them and saw them. He saw them. That's
what it says. When she saw the ark among the
flags, the Lord had directed the steps and the eyes of this
woman to come to that very spot. I got to looking at how big Egypt
was. Just right there in the midst
of the palace. I mean, she could have just gone anywhere.
Oh, no. Oh, no. She came to that spot
directed by God's good providence God's hand brought her to that
place. The Lord directed her. Our Lord
said, I must, needs go through Samaria. Why? There's a woman. There's a woman at a well. This woman had been married five
times. And the man she was living with right now wasn't her husband. The Lord came and He spoke to
her, showed her what she was. Gave that woman life. Lord, evermore
give me this water. Went into that town, told the
men. She said, you can come see a man. He told me all things
ever I did. He had to go there. You that
know Him, you know why you're here? You know why God has called
you out of darkness, number one, because He purposed to. You know
why you came? Because He gave you life. He
crossed your path. He saw you. The Scripture says
in Ephesians 1.11, in whom also we have obtained an inheritance
being predestinated according to the purpose of Him who worketh
all things after the counsel of His will. God's will is done
by Him who came down and looked, and looked. Ezekiel 16, 6, And
when I passed by thee, and I saw thee polluted in thine own blood,
I said unto thee, When thou wast in thy blood, live. Yeah, I said
unto thee, When thou wast in thy blood, live. Verse 8 says,
Now when I passed by thee and looked upon thee, Behold, thy
time was the time of love, and I spread my skirt over thee and
covered thy nakedness. Yea, I swear unto thee and entered
into a covenant with thee, saith the Lord God, thou becamest mine."
Almighty God has ever looked upon His people. He's always
seen them. He's always known them. I've
loved you with an everlasting love. I've always viewed you
in my Son. I've always seen you in... That's
where Moses was. He was in the ark. I've always
seen you in Him. I've always looked upon you in
mercy and compassion. God's never changed. He never
looked upon His people any other way but in mercy. Here's the reason for man's recovery
from the bondage and pollution of sin. The Lord. Passing by. and His eternal counsel
of mercy, and beholding them, even seeing them in their desperate
need. Sovereign grace preserved us
everlastingly in our surety, and He shall surely keep us from
falling. Oh, to hear about Him who has
everlastingly looked upon us in Christ and borne us on His
heart, redeemed us by His blood, and now keeps us by power through
faith unto salvation, ready to be revealed in the last time. David, under the inspiration
of the Spirit of God, says, Behold, Psalm 33, verse 18, the eye of
the Lord is upon them that fear Him, upon them that hope in His
mercy to deliver their soul from death and to keep them alive
in famine. Psalm 34, 15, the eyes of the
Lord are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their
cry. Thirdly, Moses was rescued by
the hand of one that was other than himself. Back in Exodus
2, the latter part, It says, her maidens walked along by the
riverside, and when she saw the ark among the flags, she sent
her maid to fetch it. Man, I just preach. I mean, you
just see that. She sent her maid. Her servant. She sent her servant. You go
get that. I see that. You see that little
boat right there? You see that little ark right
there? Moses was a helpless infant and he had no ability whatsoever
to rescue himself from that river. Oh, what a perfect picture of
a helpless sinner looked upon in mercy. The only way that that
baby was going to get out of that river was for somebody to
go down and fetch him. You go fetch it. You go get it. That maid, that servant of Pharaoh's
daughter was sent to fetch that ark. Isaiah 42, verse 1 says, Behold,
my servant, whom I uphold, mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth,
I put my spirit upon him. He shall bring forth judgment
to the Gentiles. This is what that right there
means. The Lord Jesus Christ. God's servant, the one in whom
God is well pleased, shall by His obedience and by His death
bring forth righteousness and truth and justice to the nations. God is going to save His people
out of every nation and kindred and tribe and tongue. That's
my servant. The servant of the Lord. My meat
is to do the will of Him that sent me. God's servant. Humble servant. Obedient servant. Oh, how beautifully we see the
rescue and salvation of helpless sinners. If you want to know
a beautiful picture of a sinner in need of a Savior, Moses, that
little baby, what could he do? He wasn't but three months old. His mom and daddy hid him for
three months and went back to hide him no longer. They put
him in that boat. Three-month-old. Now you ask
me, you tell me, what's a three-month-old going to do? He's going to lay right there
unless somebody fetches him. And David says, is there yet
any that is left of the house of Saul? that I may show him
kindness for Jonathan's sake." Remember when Jonathan and David
loved each other? Jonathan knew that God was going
to give the kingdom to David. Jonathan asked him, he said,
when God puts you on the throne, would you remember my family? You and I, we've been friends.
Would you remember my family? Yes, I will. Yes, I will. And
David did. God raised him up. David put
him on the throne. And David made that statement,
Is there yet any left of the house of Saul that I may show
him kindness for Jonathan's sake? Well, one says, yeah, there's
one. There's one. Now, he's lame on
both his feet. They walk. They walk. A nurse dropped him. He's crippled
in the fall. Where is he? He's over in Wody
Bar. You go fetch him. You bring him
to me. And he's going to sit at my table.
And he's going to eat my food all the days of his life for
Jonathan's sake. I'm doing this for Jonathan's
sake. All that God Almighty does for His people, He does for Christ's
sake. Christ's obedience. Christ's
love. Christ. Unless God Almighty fetches
His own, they're going to perish. But He's not going to let them
perish. All that the Father giveth Me shall surely come to Me, and
Him cometh to Me, I will in no wise cast out. He's going to
come to them. He's going to give them a new
heart. He's going to make them willing in the day of His power. He fetches
them in mercy. Verse 6. Exodus 2. She fetched
it and when she opened it, she saw the child. And behold, the
baby wept. She had compassion on him. And
she said, this is one of the Hebrew children. She opened that ark and saw that
child and heard that cry of need and had compassion on him. But
you know who that was? Her daddy. Her daddy, Pharaoh,
had said, all of the Hebrew children, you kill them. They were under
his curse. That was one right there. That
was a cursed child. That was under the curse of Pharaoh. Christ. Christ who was made a
curse. to deliver us from the curse
of the law. She opened up that ark. She saw that baby. She heard
that baby crying. Had compassion on Him. God put
compassion there. God gave her a heart for that
baby. The Lord Himself who has eternally
seen us Christ, and eternally saw our need. That baby was weeping,
that baby was miserable, that baby was in trouble. And she heard the cry, heard
the cry of that baby's desperate need. Oh, he who eternally heard
the cry, of His people and eternally has had compassion upon them,
Christ was slain for them and before the foundation of the
world. Almighty God met their need. The Scripture says in Romans
5, 8, But God commendeth His love toward us, in that while
we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. He said, I will have
compassion. Whom I'll have compassion. And
lastly, he who came down, who eternally saw us in Christ, in
mercy, who fetched us in time because he had compassion upon
us, shall he not provide for us now and forever? 7 to 10. Then said Moses' sister
to Pharaoh's daughter, Shall I go and call thee a nurse of
the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for thee? Pharaoh's
daughter said to her, Go. The maid went and called the
child's mother, and Pharaoh's daughter said to her, Take this
child away and nurse it for me. I'll give thee wages. The woman
took the child and nursed it. The child grew. She brought him
unto Pharaoh's daughter. He became her son. She called
his name Moses. She said, because I drew him
out of the water. He was this little infant child,
Moses. One that was under the sentence
of death. That's what her daddy said. Daddy said, you find those
Hebrew boys, you throw them out, throw them in the river. This
woman had compassion. And she was going to do whatever
it needed. Whatever it needed, she's going to take care of that
baby. God put compassion in her heart. The Lord has eternally
had compassion for those that are pictured by that little baby
right there. Desperate need. I want you to turn as we'll finish
in the book of Luke. We'll finish here. Luke 10. She told Moses' sister, came
over Pharaoh's daughter and she said, if you want me to, I can
go find you a nursing mama. I'll get you a mama to nurse
that baby, take care of it. Pharaoh's daughter, here again,
by the directing hand of Almighty God, God Almighty gave that woman
a heart for that baby. And she said, now you take this
baby back into where you are. And I want you to find a nursing
mama, and you let that woman nurse this baby." And she said,
I'll pay you. I'll take care of all your expenses. Whatever
it takes to take care of this baby, I'll take care of it. I'll
take care of it. Luke 10, verse 30, Jesus answered
and said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho
and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment.
and wounded him, departed, leaving him half dead. Here's a picture. There's a picture
of God's people. God's elect right there. We fell
among thieves. When we rebelled against Almighty
God in our father Adam, when He fell, we fell. When He forsook His Creator,
when He disobeyed, we disobeyed. Sin and Satan. Robbed us of the
image of God. Stripped us of any righteousness
before God. We died. We died. Scripture says in verse 31 and
32, By chance there came down a certain priest that way, and
when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. Also a Levite.
When he was at that place, came and looked on him. Passed by
on the other side. A priest, a Levite. Whether that means the moral
law and the ceremonial law, I know what it means. I know it means
the law. And the law could not, would
not, could not help that one that fell among thieves, beat
him, stripped him of his raiment, And his priest, this Levite,
picture of the law, this is what they did. They came over and
looked at him and said, yep, yeah, you're beat. Yep, you're
naked. Yep, you're half dead. You sure
are. The law tells us what we are.
But could offer no assistance whatsoever. By the law is the
knowledge of sin, Pat. The law tells us what we are. By the deeds of the law, no man
is going to be justified. You're not going to keep the
law. You think you can. You can't keep the law in word,
thought, or deed perfectly before Almighty God. Verse 33-35, But a certain Samaritan,
as he journeyed, came where he was, and when he saw him, had
compassion on him, he went to him, bound up his wounds, poured
in oil and wine, set him on his own beast, brought him to an
end, took care of him. On the morrow when he departed,
he took out two pence, gave them to the host, and said unto him,
Take care of him. And whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come
again, I will repay thee." Here's our dear Savior. He wasn't
a Samaritan. He was a Jew. But he was treated
like a Samaritan by the Jews. They hated him, despised him.
Despised what he said, despised who he is, despised everything
about him. And he came to this one, to his
neighbors, made like unto his people. In their nature, he came
to us because we couldn't go to him. We're the ones that are
beat, stripped, wounded, half-dead. I think about that half-dead. Maybe physically alive, spiritually
dead. Helpless. Helpless. And here
in mercy and compassion, bound up the wounds of sin by the pouring
in of the oil of His precious Spirit and the wine of His blood
anointed us. Carried us Hisself. This one
put Him on His own beast. The Lord took us. Bound us. Brought us to the place where
we could be taken care of. He took Him to an end right there.
Let me tell you where God puts His people. He puts them under
the sound of the gospel. Under pastors that He has called
what God has called. I'm going to give you pastors
according to my heart. And they're going to feed you,
teach you, understanding. These pastors that watch for
your soul. He paid the price. This man right
here gave him two pence. I looked it up. That was the
price of the redemption of an Israelite back in Exodus 30. Gave him two pence. He paid the price of the care. He paid the price of redemption
by His blood and obedience, by His righteousness. And He commissioned
His preachers. Just like this Samaritan, this
good Samaritan, told the keeper of the inn, now you take care
of him. You take care of him. This is
what he tells his preachers. You comfort my people. Comfort
you. Comfort you, my people, saith
the Lord." He told that innkeeper, he said, I'll be back. Anything that you pay, anything
that it cost, whatever you incurred of an expense, he said, I'll
repay thee. All that is spent in time and
prayer in asking, in labors, whatever Almighty God calls His
preachers to do. The Apostle Paul said, give yourself
to the ministry. Give yourself to the ministry.
He's given some apostles and prophets, pastors, teachers for
the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry.
Whatever it costs you, The Lord said, I'll repay you. Oh, He
who has revealed to us that we're heirs of God and joint heirs
with Christ. Lord, we're Your servants. He said, I'll take care of you.
You be faithful. You that hear, be faithful. You
that hear Him, be faithful. Be faithful to Your calling. Whatever He called you to do,
be faithful. The Lord has given us a heart
to do as His servants based on His Word. He said, I'll repay
you. I'll repay you. Oh, my God shall supply all your
need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. Lord, You will repay. What you've done for me is I'll
take care of you. I'll take care of you. You're
going to be with me. You're going to be with me. Lord, oh, the
unsearchable riches of the grace of God in Christ. Lord, teach
me these things for Christ's sake.
