I want to bring a message to
you tonight from another comforting scripture that was sent to me
last week from a dear brother and sister. They sent one verse. We're going
to look at this whole Psalm. But they sent Psalm 62 verse
8 to me. Which says? Trust in him. at all times. Ye people, pour
out your heart before Him. God is a refuge for us. It's so good, isn't it? It's
just so good. Tonight, I want to emphasize
the word Him. I want to emphasize this word
Him. Trust in Him. At all times, ye
people pour out your heart before him. God is a refuge for us." The heading at the top of my
page says, David's Great Confidence in God. David's great confidence in God,
and that's what I pray the Lord will create in us. And I mean
that when I say that. That's not just words to roll
off the tongue. I mean that. I pray that God
will create great confidence in the Lord our God. Don't you
want that? Don't you want that great confidence? in the Lord our God. Charles
Spurgeon pointed out that throughout the years, this psalm has been
referred to as the only psalm. This is it. The only psalm. And it's because of the first
word. And then how many times that
word is repeated, I know that it says truly. But if you have
a center margin in your Bible, you'll see that the word translates
only. Only. Only my soul waiteth upon
God. Only my soul waiteth upon God. Only God. That's faith. That's
confidence. Only my soul waiteth upon God. That's it. I love the story of that centurion
whose servant was sick, and he came to the Lord to see if the
Lord would heal him, heal his servant. And the Lord said, yes,
I will. I will come to your house. And
that centurion said, nope. Think about this. Yeah, you just
put yourself in his shoes, put yourself in this. Think about
the reality of this situation. He came to the Lord and he said,
Lord, my servant life at home sick. Will you heal him? And the Lord
said, yes, I will. Let's go. I'll go to your house.
And he said, no. I'm not worthy for you to come
to my house. Speak the word only, and I know
my servant will be healed. Buddy, that is faith. That's
confidence. I want that. Speak the word only,
and I know that he will be healed. I love the story of when this
man Jairus came to the Lord because his daughter was sick. And he asked the Lord, would
you heal my daughter? And the Lord was going to go
with him and go heal his daughter. But the woman with the issue
of blood came into the press and touched the hem of the Lord's
garment and stopped him from going. And he said, who touched
me? Virtue's gone out from me. And
so he's dealing and speaking to the woman with the issue of
blood. And Jairus is just standing there waiting. And while he's standing there
and the Lord's talking to this woman, some came from Jairus's
house and said, there's no need to trouble the master anymore.
I'm so sorry, but your daughter died. And while the Lord's in the middle
of talking to her, he looked over at Jairus and he said, fear
not only believe. Only believe. Don't do one thing
only. You believe on the Lord your
God. You trust your God. And he raised that girl from
the dead. That's faith. That is faith. I desire it. Lord,
increase our faith. Let that not be just something
that we know we ought to say. Lord, increase our faith. Increase
our faith. Verse one says, only my soul
waiteth upon God. From him cometh my salvation. Our Lord said in John 17, verse
three, this is life eternal that they might know thee, the only
true God in Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. The only. Verse one says, only my soul
waiteth upon God. That word waiteth means waiteth in silence. Is silent. Only my soul is silent. That, that, that is faith. That is true waiting in, in assurance,
in confidence, in silence. My soul waiteth upon God. From him cometh my salvation. The salvation of all of God's
people is Christ only. For God's true people, it is
Christ only. Another way of saying only is
alone. Christ alone. Christ only. Don't you love Knowing that,
seeing that, believing that, doesn't it simplify things? People
talk about, well, yeah, but you got to this and you got to that.
No, it's Christ only. Yeah, but you got to know a little
something about this doctrine and you got to know, no, it's
Christ only. If I know Christ, I know everything I need to know.
If I have Christ, I have everything I need to have. It's Christ only. People say, yeah, now it's Christ
only, but this, I've heard this one a lot. People like this one.
But you gotta believe, believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. Now
that's up to you, all right? You gotta, at least you gotta
believe now. No, you will believe. You will believe. You don't gotta
do anything. Christ did everything. He did,
and therefore you will. Well, I know that I'm saved because
of God and because of my baptism. No. I know I'm saved because of God
and because I don't do those sinful things I used to do anymore.
No. Only. My soul is silent upon
God only. From him cometh my salvation. He is the author of it. He is
the performer of it. He is the giver of it. He is
the sustainer of it. It's him and him only. Verse
two says, he only is my rock. my salvation. He is my defense."
That means high place, place of safety. And because that's the case,
David said, I shall not be greatly moved. I will not be greatly
moved. Spurgeon said, God's people are
like a ship at anchor. That's what God's people are
like. They are like a ship at anchor. He said the tides and
the wind may move that ship over here a little bit. And we can enter into this, can't
we? We would love to just be just
planted firm, but sometimes we feel like we're just shifted
over here a little bit. He said it may move this way
a little bit. It may move back a little bit. But as long as that anchor holds
firm, that ship isn't going anywhere. Going nowhere. Won't be greatly
moved. Hold your place right here and
go to Hebrews 6. Hebrews 6 verse 13, for when
God made promise to Abraham, because he could swear by no
greater, he swore by himself, saying, surely, blessing, I will
bless thee, and multiplying, I will multiply thee. And so
after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise. For
men barely swear by the greater, and an oath for confirmation
is to them an end of all strife. wherein God willing more abundantly
to show unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel,
because he wanted to show to every soul that he made a promise
to how unchangeable that promise was, how set in stone that promise
was. The end of verse 17 says, he
confirmed it by an oath that by two immutable things, two
unchangeable things, in which it was impossible for God to
lie, we might have a strong consolation who have fled for refuge to lay
hold upon the hope set before us, which hope we have as an
anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which entereth
into that within the veil, whether the forerunner is for us entered,
even Jesus, made a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek. Our flesh may be weak, and it
is. Our faith may be weak, and it is. It is. We may feel tossed to and fro
and worried and fearful and doubtful. But in Christ, we have an anchor
for the soul. It doesn't matter what we feel
like. Feelings come, feelings go, feelings are deceiving. Our
anchor is the Word of God. Nothing else is worth believing.
I know people who feel saved who aren't. And I know people who don't feel
saved who are. Our feelings may sway, it doesn't
matter. We have an anchor for the soul
in Christ, in the Lord Jesus Christ. He is the anchor. He is our rock. He only is our
rock and our salvation, and in him we are not gonna be moved.
And that makes us glad. I'm so glad for that. Go back
to Psalm 62. Now to the enemies of the Lord,
David said in verse three, how long will you imagine mischief
against a man? You shall be slain all of you
as a bowing wall, shall you be? And as a tottering fence, you're
going to fall. You're going to fall down. Why? Here's the reason why is because
it's not God only. That's the reason why. It's not
Christ only, it's Christ plus something. It's always Christ
plus something. Our Lord ended this book in Revelation
22 by saying, if any man adds anything to the words of this
prophecy, God shall add to that man all the plagues in this book. That's fearful, isn't it? It's
the Lord our God alone. It's Christ alone. Verse 4, they
only consult to cast him down from his excellency. They delight
in lies. They bless with their mouth,
but they curse inwardly. Psalm 2 says, why do the heathen
rage? Why do they rage? The Lord is
going to have them in derision. He's going to make a mockery
of them. Verse five, David said, my soul,
he's speaking to himself, just like he did in Psalm 103. Soul,
my soul, wait thou only upon God. Wait thou only upon God,
for my expectation is from him. Only upon God, his will only. I pray the Lord would put that
in my heart. Lord, give me a heart that says, your will only. I want that. Normally, my weak
flesh wants his will to match my will. Normally, when I go
to him in prayer, Lord, these are all the things that I'd like
for you to do for me. This is how I'd like you to do it. This
is when I'd like you to do it. Normally. But ultimately, for
God's people, they know, not my will, thine be done. That's what's best. That's what
I want. That's what I want, Lord. Your will only, your word only,
your work only, your glory only. Well, Gabe, what if that means
you have to get up there and fall flat on your face? Amen. Your
glory only. Your salvation only. Salvation
is not a cooperation between me and Him. It's Him only. It's
Him only. It wasn't our decision together,
it was His alone. And thank God, I am so thankful
for this, God the Father is not looking to Christ and me for
appeasement and satisfaction. He's looking to Christ alone.
God the Father is not looking at Christ and me, this cooperation
that me, you know, me and Jesus have a good thing going. No. He's looking to Christ alone.
We're looking to Christ alone. The Father is looking to Christ
alone. Everything looks to Him only. Verse 5 says, My soul wait
thou only upon God. For my expectation is from him,
my hope, my confidence, my all. Verse six says, he only, don't
you, you see why they call this the only Psalm? Only, only, you
can't get to the end of this Psalm and not have that just
embedded in your heart. Verse six says, he only is my
rock and my salvation He is my defense. I shall not be moved.
That is exactly what he said in verse two. He only is my rock
and my salvation. He's my defense. I shall not
be greatly moved. David said that's worth repeating.
So do we. So do we. That's what we say
every time we come into this place. Every single time. Verse
six. He only is my rock and my salvation. He is my defense. I shall not
be moved. In God is my salvation and my
glory. If any man glory, let him glory
in the Lord. God forbid that I should glory
save in the cross. of my Lord Jesus Christ. That's
the only place to glory. Hold your place again and go
to Jeremiah 9. Jeremiah 9 verse 23. Thus saith the Lord, let not
the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory
in his might. Let not the rich man glory in
his riches, but let him that gloryeth glory in this, that
he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the Lord which
exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth.
For in these things I delight, saith the Lord. That's something
to glory in, isn't it? That is something to glory in.
Don't glory in your own wisdom. Don't glory in your own riches. Don't glory in your own strength,
which none of that's our own anyway. Everything that we have
is given to us. But he said, don't glory in any
of those things. If any man glory, let him glory
in the fact that he knows me. You know, the apostles came back
one time. The Lord sent them out and they came back so excited.
They were just astounded. They said, even the devils are
subject to our word. And he said, don't glory in that.
Don't rejoice in that. You rejoice that your names are
written in heaven. You rejoice over the fact that
you know me. I know you. He said, I delight in these things,
loving kindness, judgment, righteousness. Glory in the fact that I delight
in that. Mercy. That's something to glory in. Go back to Psalm 62. Verse seven says, in God is my
salvation and my glory, the rock of my strength and my refuge
is in God. He was our refuge in the judgment
of the cross. He's our refuge right now, right
now. We hid in the secret of His tabernacle
as we were judged by the wrath of God on our sin. What happened
on the cross of Calvary? What happened on the cross? Here's
what happened. God the Father put His people inside the Lord
Jesus Christ. And he saw all of his people
inside the Lord Jesus Christ and he was angry with their sin.
And he judged them, he punished them, he killed them. And we
were hiding in him as all of this happened to us, hiding in
the cliff to the rock. We were hiding in that day of
trouble and we are still hiding right there. We hide in Him right
now. He is our refuge right now. You need a place to hide? Run
to Him. We hide in the secret of His
tabernacle. We hide in Him. Verse 8 says, trust in Him at
all times, you people. Pour out your heart before Him.
God is a refuge for us. Trust Him. I want to learn to
do that. I want to learn to do that. Trust
Him. He's given us a word, and I want to learn to trust this
man. I want to learn to trust what
he says. So, trust Him. So, pour out your
heart to Him. I want that to be the first thing
I do when trouble comes. Pour out your heart. What are
we going to do? We've got a bad situation here. What are we going
to do? Let's pour out our heart to Him. Let's go to Him. Let's
recognize Him. Let's acknowledge Him at all times. Trust in Him at all times, just
like the Lord God omnipotent reigneth. That's what we looked
at, what, Wednesday night? The Lord God omnipotent reigneth
at all times, at all times. Good times, bad times, hard times,
fearful times. Well, we can pour out our heart
to the Lord God omnipotent who reigneth at all times. God is a refuge for us, for all
of His people. at all times. Verse nine, surely men of low degree are
vanity and men of high degree are a lie. That is all men. You got low degree, high degree,
doesn't matter. All men, surely men of low degree
are vanity and men of high degree are a lie to be laid in the balance. They are altogether lighter than
vanity. Everything concerning man is
going to come to nothing in the end, nothing. Verse 10, trust
not in oppression and become not vain in robbery. That means unjust things, which
is everything in this world. Don't trust in the world. Don't
trust in man. Put not your trust in princes
or horses. Him only. Him only. Verse 10 says, If riches increase,
set not your heart upon them. They never last, it's just vanity,
it's just temporary. Nothing is worth losing sight
of God only, nothing, nothing, Christ only. Verse 11, God hath
spoken once, twice have I heard this, that power belongeth unto
God. Also unto thee, O Lord, belongeth
mercy, for thou renderest to every man according to his work.
Power and mercy, those are two wonderful things. Power and mercy,
both of which belong to Jesus Christ alone. All power, power
over all flesh, all things are delivered into his hands. And
mercy, do you need mercy? Jesus Christ only. Verse 12 says,
also unto thee, O Lord, you see capital L, lowercase O-R-D, Jesus
Christ, belongeth mercy, for thou renderest to every man according
to his work. The mercy, the grace, the power
of the Lord gave our work to Christ. and Christ's work to
us. That's what the power of God
Almighty did for us. He gave our works of sin and
wickedness and rebellion. He gave our works to Christ and
he gave Christ's work of righteousness and holiness and goodness. He gave all that to us. And then
after that transaction was finished, he rendered to every man according
to his work. And that's the gospel. That's
amazing. That's amazing. You know, we
think all the time, but after everything I've done, how on
this earth could I stand before God after everything I've done?
Here's how. It's because Christ has already
stood before God after everything you've done. And now you get
to stand before God in everything Christ has done. That's why he's
going to look at his chosen people, his elect people, and he's going
to say, well done. Good. You went about doing good.
You bound up the brokenhearted. You healed the sick. You fed
the hungry. Well done. That's just amazing
to me. That's so amazing to me. Verse
eight, trust in Him at all times. Ye people pour out your heart
before Him. God is a refuge for us. Amen.
