I love it. Tonight we're gonna
see what our God did for us. So let's read these first nine
verses and then we'll begin the text with verse 10. Chapter 18,
verse one says, when Jesus had spoken these words,
he went forth with his disciples over the brook Kidron. Where
was the garden? into the which he entered in
his disciples. And Judas also, which betrayed
him, knew the place, for Jesus oft times resorted thither with
his disciples. Judas then, having received a
band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees,
cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons. Jesus
therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went
forth and said unto them, Whom seek ye? They answered him, Jesus
of Nazareth. Jesus said unto them, I am. And Judas also, which betrayed
him, stood with them. As soon then as he had said unto
them, I am, They went backward and fell to the ground. Then
asked he them again, whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus answered, I have told you
that I am. If therefore you seek me, let
these go their way, that the saying might be fulfilled which
he spake. Something stood out to me in
verse 9. We ended with that verse last week, but something stood
out whenever I was reading it again. Do you see where it says
that the same might be fulfilled? He is the Scriptures. The Scriptures walked around
this earth for 33 and a half years. This is His Word. He is
the one who said all that back in Isaiah and back in Psalms. Everything that comes out of
His mouth must be fulfilled. And He just said that about 15
minutes earlier. 30 minutes earlier, an hour earlier,
it was the same night. He just prayed to his father
and said, of all that you've given me, I've lost none. Immediately
afterwards, something happens that the saying might be fulfilled. I've lost none. It must come
to pass. It must. If we find it in this
Word, it must come to pass. He cannot lie. It must. So verse 10, Then Simon Peter,
having a sword, drew it, and smote the high priest's servant,
and cut off his right ear. of his hand. They didn't carry
swords while they went with the Lord. He said, leave everything
behind and follow me. And Peter had just received this One of them smoked the servant
of the high priest and cut off his right ear. Right before that,
in verse 35, he said unto them, When I sent you without purse
and script and shoes, lacked ye anything? And they said nothing. Then said he unto them, But now
he that and likewise his script. And
he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment and buy one.
For I say unto you that this that is written must yet be accomplished
in me. And he was reckoned among the
transgressors. That's Isaiah 53, he was quoting
that. This must be accomplished. For the things concerning me
have an end. And they said, Lord, behold,
Here are two swords. And he said unto them, it is
enough. He told them, you need a sword. And there were two swords. And they said, Lord, there's
two swords right there. And he said, it's enough. Now, spiritually
speaking, we still hold these two swords, the Old Testament
and the New Testament. We have his word, which is sharper
than any two-edged sword. Christ and him crucified. So back over in John 18, verse 10 says, Then Simon Peter,
having a sword, drew it, and smote the high priest's servant,
and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus. I searched long and hard, and
I could not find anything specifically on this man. But I do know this. I will tell you this. Malchus
was born into this world for the purpose of having his ear
cut off right in there. That's why God sent a soul to
a body. That's why he was grown up, raised
in that area, it was for the purpose of having his ear cut
off. The same Lord standing right
here in front of my office is the one who told Pharaoh in Egypt,
for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might show my
power in you. That's the whole reason I raised
you up. And that my name might be declared throughout all the
earth. Our Lord right here is being
apprehended. They're coming and they're going to lay hold on
Him. And they're saying what they're saying, and Peter's seeing
all this, and all of a sudden, the high priest's servant probably
is the first one to lay hold on Him. And Peter draws his sword. And our Lord being taken to this
cross, being apprehended, He gave one last As they're laying hands on him
to take him in, he shows one more display of
power, one more display of kindness, one more display of compassion
by healing his enemy. The one who got him to bring This is the reason I'm here.
I'm here to make my enemies my footstool. Not those that love
me. Sinners against God. My enemies. Now think about this, okay? Judas,
he had come with a band of men. And a band is 600 men. That's how many he came with.
600 men. Verse 3 says, from the chief priests and Pharisees
cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons." Alright,
Judas brings 600 men with lanterns and torches and weapons. Our
Lord had with him 11 disciples that had two swords between all
of them. When Peter lashed out at the
high priest's servants, Why did they not all attack? Why didn't they all retaliate?
Peter drew blood. Peter instigated war. Why did
everybody stand still and do nothing? The reason is because
the Prince of Peace was alone. They could not do anything unless
he left them. Total peace. Our Lord was orchestrating
this whole thing. The reason that he missed and
he didn't cut off Malchus' head, instead he cut off his ear, is
because Peter could not cut his head off. Our Lord is life. Our Lord is life. No man ever
died in his life. Not one man. Not one man. Cannot die in His presence. Not
even the thieves on the cross died in His presence. They had
to break their legs. Our Lord gave up the ghost first.
No man ever died in His presence. Malchus was just as safe as the
rest of them. So verse 11, John 18 verse 11. The cup which my father hath
given me, shall I not drink it? I thought about that verse of
scripture in James chapter one. It says, the wrath of man worketh
not the righteousness of God. It worketh not the righteousness
of God. Put up your sword. All our Lord ever said was, thy
will be done. That's all he ever said. Thy
will be done. Peter, don't you realize that
my will is being done right here? Obviously he didn't, but it was. It was. Don't you realize that
my will is being done right here? The cup which my Father hath
given me, shall I not drink it? Go with me over to Matthew 20. I'm not going to look at the
dispute. Matthew 20 verse 22 says, But Jesus answered and said,
You know not what you ask. Are you able to drink of the
cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism
that I am baptized with? They say unto him, We are able. and he saith unto them, you shall
drink indeed of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that
I am baptized with. You shall. Do you know why we
drink this cup right here? Do you know why we drink this
cup? There's only one reason. It's
because he drank this cup. He said, are you going to drink
the cup that I'm going to drink? Talking about his death, talking
about that judgment, talking about that wrath. Are you going
to drink that cup? And they said, we are. He said,
you are. And the only reason we drank
this is because he drank this cup. We drank it in him. The cup of suffering, death,
judgment, aren't you so glad we drank it in him? in him. But he said, either you're
going to drink of it alone or you're going to drink of it in
me. My father gave me this cup and I'm willing to take it. Shall
I not drink of it? We drink of this cup saying,
he drank this for me. That's what we're saying. He
took the suffering for me. He bore that judgment, that wrath,
for me. This cup and this bread says,
I died in Him. He lives in me. Thank God He
drank the cup. Thank God. I wrote that in my
notes. Twice. In big letters. I use, sometimes
I write big. Thank God he drank the cup. And
as it comes out of my mouth, I wish my heart meant what my
paper said. Thank God he drank the cup. I would love to hear a number
that no man can number in glory, all in unison crying, thank God
he drank the cup. Thank God he drank the cup. Then the band and the captain
and officers of the Jews took Jesus and bound him. When Isaac asked his father Abraham,
I see the fire and I see the wood, but where's the land? Abraham
built an altar and he laid the wood in order and he bound Isaac,
his son, and he laid him on that altar. He bound him. After our Lord knocked them all
down, they came with their lanterns, with their torches, with their
weapons, He said, Whom seek ye? They said, Jesus of Nazareth.
He said, I am. And after they were all pinned
down until He let them up, and after a man had his ear cut
off and He reached and completely healed the man's ear, He allowed
them to bind him. Verse 12, then the band and the
captain and officers of the Jews took Jesus and bound him and
led him away to Annas first. For he was father-in-law to Caiaphas,
which was the high priest that same year. According to our God's
law, the high priest is the one who made the sacrifice for the
atonement, for that sin offering. It had to be the high priest.
Before that sacrifice came to the high priest, the Lord said,
you take him to the priest to be inspected. He must be perfect. He must be inspected. He must
be spotless. So in obedience to God's command,
our Lord was brought to Annas first. And then Annas sent him
to Caiaphas, and then Caiaphas sent him to Pilate. And with
each one of them, they all said, I find no fault in this man. He's spotless. Verse 12, and
the band and the captain and the officers of the Jews took
Jesus and bound him and led him away to Annas first, for he was
father-in-law of Caiaphas, which was the high priest that same
year. Now Caiaphas was he which gave
counsel to the Jews that it was expedient that one man should
die for the people. That was back in chapter 11.
Turn back with me, chapter 11. Then gathered the chief priests
and the Pharisees, a council, and said, what do we? For this man doeth many miracles. If we let him thus alone, all
men will believe on him. And the Romans shall come and
take away both our place and nation. And one of them, named
Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them,
you know nothing at all. nor consider that it is expedient
for us that one man should die for the people, and that the
whole nation perish not. In this spake he not of himself,
but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should
die for that nation, and not for that nation only, but that
also he should gather together in one the children of God that
were scattered abroad. I love how every accusation,
every condemnation that this sinful world brought against
him during his crucifixion, every single one of them brought glory
to his name. Every single one of them. They
mocked him, saying, Hail King of the Jews. They said His blood be on us
and on our children. They said He saved others, Himself
He cannot save. Every bit of it. Honor and glory. All of God's people say Amen.
Amen in judgment and condemnation. Amen. In Caiaphas, right here. And one man should die for the
people, and let the whole nation perish not." The whole nation.
Whole nation? Yes, the whole nation. All of
the children that God the Father put in them. He's not a Jew which
is one outwardly. He's a Jew which is one inwardly. They're the spiritual children
of Israel. Our Lord said, Father, every one of them that you gave
to me, I have lost none. None of them. So what we're doing
right here is honoring our successful Savior. It was successful. Everything about it was successful.
Everything He said He would do, He did. It truly is finished. We are honoring Him. We eat this
bread, we drink this cup, If that's your only hope, if
that's your only hope, I mean truly your only hope, if you
add no work to what He did right here, if you don't take any work
from it, if you're solely looking to Christ and His death for all
of your salvation,
