Let's turn back to Exodus 3.
I changed it up a little bit. Wednesday
night we looked at Matthew 6 instead of this and I thought this would
be a good thing to look at this morning. Exodus chapter 3. Our text specifically is verses
13 to 15, and I want to read verses 11 to 15. I want to add
11 and 12 in there. Exodus 3 verse 11 says, And Moses
said unto God, Who am I? That I should go unto Pharaoh,
and that I should bring forth the children of Israel out of
Egypt. And he said, certainly I will
be with thee. And this shall be a token unto
thee that I have sent thee. When thou hast brought forth
the people out of Egypt, you shall serve God upon this mountain.
And Moses said unto God, behold, when I come unto the children
of Israel and shall say unto them, the God of your fathers
has sent me unto you, And they shall say to me, what is his
name? What shall I say unto them? And
God said unto Moses, I am that I am. And he said, thus shalt
thou say unto the children of Israel, I am hath sent me unto
you. And God said moreover unto Moses,
thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, The Lord
God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac,
and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you. This is my name
forever, and this is my memorial unto all generations. I want to begin by noticing three
phrases. Three phrases. And this is the
order or the progression of salvation. If the Lord saves a sinner, this
is the progression of salvation. Look at verse 11. There's a phrase
in there and it says, who am I? That's the start. Now look at verse 13. There's
a phrase at the end of it that says, what is his name? And then verse 14 says, I am
that I am. If a person ever gets a hold
of those three phrases, it'll be an evidence that salvation
has come. Who am I? What is his name? I am that I am. Verse 13 says,
And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children
of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers
hath sent me unto you, and they shall say to me, What is his
name? What shall I say unto them? The title this morning and the
subject specifically is, What is His Name? That's the title. He said, first of all, here in
verse 13, when I come, Moses said, when I come unto the children
of Israel, when I come to the children of
Israel, that's who deliverance is for. That's who deliverance
is for. The children of Israel. Israel
is Jacob. Jacob. And as I was studying
this, I couldn't help but think of Jacob. And I was thinking,
if he's here this morning, I've got a lot of bad things to say
about his name. Bless his heart. Actually, I
love the name Jacob. It's my name. Israel is Jacob and Jacob is
the sinner. He's the sinner. Jacob is that
trickster, that supplanter. When I come unto the sinners,
that's the gospel right there. That's the wonderful news already
and we haven't even got into it yet. I'm coming to sinners. Deliverance is for sinners. Christ
came to seek and to save sinners. Sinners. I would love to tell
that to more sinners. That's why we got on the radio.
I'd love to be able to tell that to more sinners. Christ came
to seek and to save that which was lost. Sinners. Deliverance
is for sinners. But you know what? Sinners are
very hard to find. There's 51,000 people in Kingsport,
and the radio program goes out to a much wider portion than
that, but they say they've done all these tests or whatever they
do, and they say that they have 27,000 listeners a week to our radio program. In those 27,000 people, we're
going to be hard-pressed to find a sinner. Do you understand what
I'm saying? Sinners are very hard to find. All have sinned and come short
of the glory of God, but sinners are hard to find. Our Lord came to seek and to save sinners, and they're
hard to find. It's hard to find someone who
really believes deep in the heart, who am I? Who am I? Just a sinner. But Moses says,
Lord, if I find any, if I actually find any, if we send this word
out and we actually find any, he said in verse 13, when I come
unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, the
God of your fathers has sent me unto you and they shall say
to me, what is his name? What shall I say unto them? What should I say unto them?
What should I say on the radio? What should I say? You know, that is the substance
of our entire message. It really is. That is the gospel
of the entire message. When they ask me, what is his
name? Who is he? Who is he? That's the entire message. That's
the gospel. Who does he say he is? Moses said, Lord, what should
I say about you? I'm going to stand up and speak
for God. Can you imagine? What am I doing? Why am I here? I'm not saying,
why am I here? I'm saying, what am I, what do
I think I'm doing? I'm going to stand up here and
speak on the behalf of God. What should I say to the people,
Lord? Who should I say you are? Verse
14, and God said unto Moses, I am that I am. I am not what you think I am. I am not who you've made me up
to be in your mind. I am that I am. The first thing you tell sinners
is. I don't answer to anybody. When
they say what is his name? We know his name now. He goes
on in a few chapters to say my name is Jehovah. And then he goes on to give us
more names and he gives us more names. But when they ask, what
is his name? He said, I am that I am. I don't
answer to anybody. Now, I think it's interesting
that he said, I am that I am. The word that is how the Lord
has chosen to describe what he is. He said, I am that I am. I want you to turn with me over
to Luke 1. And look at verse 34. This is
where the angel came and told Mary she would be with child.
Luke 1.34, Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be,
seeing I know not a man? And the angel answered and said
unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power
of the Highest shall overshadow thee. Therefore also, THAT HOLY
THING, THAT HOLY THING, WHICH SHALL
BE BORN OF THEE, SHALL BE CALLED THE SON OF GOD. How do you describe
Him? How do you describe Him? Turn
with me over to 1 John 1. Back toward Revelation. 1 John
1. Alright, look at verse 1. It
says, "...that which was from the beginning,
which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which
we have looked upon, and our hands have handled of the word
of life, For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear
witness, and show unto you that eternal life, which was with
the Father, and was manifested unto us. That which we have seen
and heard declare we unto you." That is what we declare unto
you. I am that I am. That's what He is. Alright, now
here's the definition of that. I am that I am. It means the existing one. It means absolute, therefore
unchanging, the eternal being of God. How do you describe that? How do you put that into words. How do you do that? That! I am that I am. What He is is self-existent. The best man or woman in the
world, the best angel in glory has to say this, by the grace of God, I am what
I am, by the grace of God. But God says, I am that I am. He is self-existent. Now, I pray
this message is of the Lord, and if it is, this is my favorite
part. I just want you to know that. He's self-existent. He's self-sufficient. He's all-sufficient and He's
inexhaustible. Okay, now, you know what that
means? It means He doesn't need me. That's what it means. He doesn't need me. He doesn't
need me to give Him glory. Now, I want to. And everything
that has been done is for His glory, but He doesn't need me
to give Him glory. He doesn't need me to give Him
company. He said, I desire that where
I am they may be also. But He doesn't need my company.
He's not lonely. He never has been and He never
will be. He doesn't need me to bring Him
joy and happiness. Now He says, we do. And He, on
the cross, my burden gladly bearing, He did it for the joy set before
Him, but He doesn't need me to bring Him one ounce of joy or
happiness. He doesn't need me to do anything. He is that He is. He doesn't
need me to take the first step. He doesn't need me to accept
Him. He doesn't need that. He doesn't need me to open the
door to my heart and let Him in. When He wants in, He breaks
the door down. He doesn't need that. He doesn't
need me to fundraise for Him. God's house needs new windows,
so we're going to go to Krispy Kremes and sell donuts. He doesn't
need that. He doesn't need me to lead anybody
to Him. You talk to people and say, well,
I led them right to the Lord, right then and there. We talked,
and I knew, and I led him to the... He doesn't need me to
lead anybody to Him. When He chooses to save a person,
He confronts that person personally. And He speaks clearly and directly
to their heart like a two-edged sword. He says, I am that I am. Somebody asked the question one
time, we always say the Lord speaks to a person. And He asked
a preacher, when He speaks, does He speak
out loud? And the man said, no. He said,
it is much, much louder than that. He doesn't need me. He doesn't
need me. You know, if the world could
ever get a hold of that, it'd change everything. He don't need
me. But do you know what is sweeter
than the honeycomb to the heart of a sinner? Hearing Him say,
we read in His Word and we see, He doesn't need me. But hearing
Him say, I love you and I want you. I don't need you. But I
love you and I want you. He is what He has always been. And He is what He will always
be. What does that mean? I really
don't fully know. He is unsearchable. Just listen
to this. Don't turn there, but listen
to Job chapter 11. This is verses 7 through 10.
Canst thou by searching find out God? Well, I'm just going
to start digging until I find God. Canst thou by searching
find out God? Canst thou find out the Almighty
unto perfection? It is as high as heaven. What
canst thou do? Deeper than hell, what canst
thou know? The measure thereof is longer
than the earth, and broader than the sea. If he cut off and shut
up, or gather together, then who can hinder him? Well, I'm going to search him
out on my own until I find him. You can't. I appreciate the heart,
I appreciate the attitude, I appreciate the desire, but you just can't.
You just can't. He's unsearchable. He said to
a man named Manoah, Manoah wanted to know what his
name was. And he said, why askest thou thus after my name, seeing
it is secret? It's just secret. You cannot
find me. You cannot know me. You can't
even know my name unless I reveal it to you. Well, our text, Exodus
3 verse 13 says, And Moses said unto God, Behold,
when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto
them, The God of your fathers has sent me unto you, And they
shall say to me, What is his name? What should I say unto
them? And God said unto Moses, I am
that I am, and... The Lord gave Moses two answers. First, you tell the people, I
am that I am. And then, verse 14 says, thus
shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I am hath sent me
to you. I am hath sent me unto you. To the world, I am that I am.
But let me tell you what I am to you. I am that I am. But let me tell
you what I am to you. I am faithful. Faithfulness has just come to
you. I am merciful. Mercy sent me
to you. I am exactly what I've said I
am. Now he told Moses, his messenger,
You go tell my people I am hath sent me to you. So I want to
tell you, and just listen to the times he said in his word,
I am. I am. Our brethren had this much
scripture to know of him. And now we're so blessed to have
this much more. And He said, I am, I am, I am,
so many times. Now I want to give you some and
just listen to these. And these are only from John, just the
book of John. It's all through the Word, but
these are only from the book of John, okay? In John 4, 26, He said, I am
the Messiah. A woman was at the well. And she said, I know when the
Messiah comes, He will tell us all things. And the Lord Jesus
Christ said to her, I am He. I'm He. I'm the Messiah. I'm
the one sent. I am Emmanuel, God with you. John 6 verse 35 says this, He said, I am the bread of life. I'm the bread of life. He that
cometh to me shall never hunger. And he that believeth on me shall
never thirst. Never again. He said in John chapter 8 verse
23, Ye are from beneath and I am from above. Ye are of this world,
I am not of this world. Every man born into this world
from Adam is a sinner. He said, I'm not of this world.
I'm not of this world. In John 8 verse 58, he said,
I am eternal. This is what he said before Abraham
was, I am. In John 9, 5, He said, I am the
light. I'm the light of the world. I'm
the one that causes blind people to see. Go tell the blind that. It's good news. In John 10, verse 7, He said,
I am the door. I'm the door. Knock and it shall
be opened to you. These things are mysteries. These
things are secrets. No man can know. And he came
and said, I'm the door. In John 10 verse 11, he said,
I am the good shepherd and I lay down my life for the sheep. In John 10 36, he said, I'm the
son of God. Son of God, I'll make intercession
for you. John 11 says this, he told Martha,
I am the resurrection and the life. He that believeth in me,
though he were dead, yet shall he live, and whosoever liveth
and believeth in me is never gonna die. And then he said,
do you believe that? Every time I read that, I like
that. I really don't want to die. I
really don't. I'd love to say I had strong
faith right now and I'm ready to go. I want to live and believe in Him. And if He's caused me to do that, Death will be no different to
me than that good sleep I got last night. It'll be no different.
It'll be so refreshing. You talk about waking up refreshed.
You're going to be refreshed. You're going to have some energy. John 13, 13, he said, You call
me Master and Lord, and You say, Well, for so I am. Isn't that
good news to know He is my Master and my Lord? He's in charge of
me. You go tell my people I am. Sent
me to you. In John 14, 6, He said, I'm the
way, I'm the truth, and I'm the life. No man comes to the Father
but by me. And in John 15, 5, He said, I'm
the vine. I'm the vine, you are the branches. I lost it. He said, I am the vine, ye are
the branches. He that abideth in me and I in
him, the same bringeth forth much fruit, for without me you
can do nothing. You can do nothing. Now that's
who He says in His Word that He is, okay? I'm going to be
quick. Turn with me to Matthew 16. Matthew chapter 16. And look at verse 13. When Jesus came into the coast
of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, saying, Whom do
men say that I, the Son of Man, am? I've said who I am. Who do they
say I am? Verse 14. And they said, Some say thou
art John the Baptist, some Elias and others, Jeremias or one of
the prophets. Now listen to this. They say, those who don't know
who you are, Those who don't know what your name is, they
say you're John the Baptist. They say you're the front runner
for God. That's what they say. They say
you're the one who came to prepare the way for God. Think about
that. Think about that in religion. They say you're only the person
who points men to God, who can get people to God. That's what
they say about you. And that's where they leave it.
Or they say you're Elijah or Jeremiah or one of the prophets.
Jeremiah was called the weeping prophet. They say you're begging men.
They say you're pleading men. They say you're crying for men
to let you save them. That's what they say. They either
say you're the one who came to prepare the way for God, or they
say you're just crying for men to let you save them. They say you're a good man who
only wants the best for everybody. Look at verse 15. He saith unto them, But whom
say ye that I am? Who do you say I am? Do you say
I'm just the man who can get you to God? Do you say I'm begging
lowly sinners to let me do anything? Verse 16, Simon Peter answered
and said, Thou art the Christ. the Son of the Living God. By God's grace, by God's revealing
Himself to us, by God's mercy, we say, Thou art the Christ. The Christ. There's a writer
named Robert Hawker, and he defined the name Christ as this. This
is excellent. God united to humanity. We believe you are God united
to humanity. That's what we believe. What
is His name? Here's what it is. The Lord Jesus
Christ. The. One and only. Lord. Do you know what that name
Lord means? Every time you see in Scripture,
sometimes the word Lord is lowercase, every time you see capital L,
capital O, capital R, capital D, you know what that means?
It means Jehovah. That's the name of it. And the
name Jehovah means God. The God. Jesus, the man. Jesus, the man
born of a virgin. Jesus, the Savior, the man. The
Lord Jesus Christ means the union of both. 100% God, 100% man, and the perfect
union of both. So back to our text, Exodus 3. What is His name? Verse 15 says, And God said moreover unto Moses,
Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, The Lord
God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac,
and the God of Jacob, has sent me unto you. This is my name
forever, and this is my memorial unto all generations. You tell
my people, the sinners who I have chosen to save, I am the Lord
God of their fathers. That's what you tell them. You
tell them, I'm the same God that Abraham had. I'm the same God. Abraham was 75 years old when
the Lord saved him. 75. He was a false religion sinner. And the Lord said, I made a promise
to him. to lead him out of all that,
get him out of that idolatry, and give him faith to believe
that I would bring him to the desired place, the place of his
inheritance, a city which hath foundations, whose builder and
maker is God. I blessed him. I kept my promise. And I'm still the same God. You
go tell my people I'm still the same God. Tell them they have
the same God Isaac had. Isaac was tied up on an altar. Bound up, tied up, ready to die,
as good as dead. And I provided a way out for
him. I provided a substitute for him, a ram caught in the
thicket. I spared his life because of
the blood of another. Now you go tell Israel, I'm still
the same God. You tell them I'm the same God
Jacob had. That lying, cheating sinner,
I broke him. I broke him. I wrestled with
him and I broke him. He was struggling with everything. He was having a hard time with
everything. He knew it, but he wasn't bowing
to it. And I broke him. I broke him
to my will, I broke him to my word, I made him bow. And then I converted him to be
a prince with God. Now you go tell my people I'm
still the same God. Thus shalt thou say unto the
children of Israel, I am hath sent me to you. Now look at the
end of verse 15. It says, this is my name forever. And this is my memorial unto
all generations. This is my name. What a blessed
name it is.
