Psalms
What does the Bible say about God's goodness?

The Bible emphasizes God's goodness in His acts of mercy, provision, and salvation, calling all people to praise Him for His wonderful works.

Scripture clearly states the goodness of God in Psalm 107, where it repeatedly calls upon men to recognize and praise the Lord for His wonderful works. The psalmist recounts how God delivers His people from distress and gathers them into His fold, emphasizing His merciful nature. God's goodness is most evident in His acts of saving grace, where He shows compassion to rebellious sinners, wandering lost, and hungry. All believers are invited to reflect on their lives and acknowledge the sovereign providence of God, reaffirming that His goodness is present in every circumstance and trial we face.

Psalm 107

How do we know God chooses His people?

God's choice of His people is affirmed in Scripture, teaching that He gathers the elect according to His sovereign will and purpose.

The doctrine of election is firmly rooted in several biblical passages, such as Psalm 107, where it reveals that God is the one who gathers His people from all corners of the earth. This gathering is not based on human merit but on God's sovereign choices. The psalmist emphasizes that it is God who creates and calls His own, as seen in verses where it states, 'Blessed is the man whom Thou choosest.' Election highlights that our salvation is entirely at God's initiative and reflects His grace and mercy towards those whom He has predestined for eternal life. Recognition of this truth brings about deep gratitude and praises towards the God who saves us.

Psalm 107, Isaiah 43:4

Why is it important for Christians to understand God's mercy?

Understanding God's mercy is crucial for Christians as it underpins our salvation and fosters gratitude, encouraging us to live lives that reflect grace to others.

God’s mercy is integral to the Christian faith and is central to the theme of Psalm 107. The psalm illustrates that God delivers those who are distressed because of their sin, showing that His mercy reaches out even to the worst of sinners. This mercy is not a result of human effort but is a gift from God that leads to salvation. Recognizing this mercy inspires believers to praise the Lord, as it is His goodness that transforms our lives. By understanding God's mercy, Christians are called to reflect that same mercy in their interactions with others, thereby creating a community characterized by grace, compassion, and love. Understanding God's mercy not only affirms our hope and assurance in God’s promises but also reflects the essence of the gospel that we are called to share.

Sing this song of praise to Him
until I see His face. Thank you, Lord, for saving my
soul. Thank you, Lord, for making me
whole. Thank you, Lord, for giving to
me All right, go back with me to Psalm 107, Psalm 107. This
psalm, if you read it, you're able enabled to read it with understanding,
really needs very little comment, does it? So I'll just do what
they did in Ezra's day, that scribes stood up and read the
word and then just gave the sense of the reading. And the people
went away, and I hope you will too, rejoicing. and yet rejoicing. The world people who heard them
crying couldn't discern the difference between their sadness and their
happiness. They were crying for joy. A wonderful
psalm, a psalm of the goodness, the Lord's goodness and his wonderful
works. His works that are full of wonder,
amazing wonder, gathering, leading, providing, saving, redeeming,
being merciful, gracious, long-suffering, delivering his people, a bunch
of ungrateful, disobedient sinners, children
of Israel. And four times, if you notice,
four times it said, oh, oh that men. And the word men is in italics. Meaning, oh, that everyone, men,
women, young people, would praise the Lord, thank him, give him
all the glory, do his night, praise the Lord for his goodness. Scripture says, the Lord is tender,
mercies are over all his work. The unjust, the whole world receives
the reign as well as the judgment. Oh, that everyone would praise
the Lord for His goodness and His wonderful works to the children
of men. And we would see, if we give
us eye, that God's works are, they're God's work, very clearly,
very clearly. Four times he says that and gives
reasons why we should praise Him, and that's what I want to
look at. Verse 3 in our text, he said he gathered them. He
redeemed them and gathered them out of the lands from the east,
from the west, north, and south. God's people are gathered by
him. He said over in Isaiah's, well,
I started to say gospel, yeah, Isaiah's gospel, he said, I have
gathered my people. Bring my sons. I've gathered
them. I've created them. I've gathered
them. The nations gathered. from the
north, south, and east and west. I did this, the Lord said. Blessed
is the man, the woman, the young person whom thou choosest. God has a chosen people and elect
people and causes to approach unto him. He gathers them. You
know, you hear that old saying that preachers start to wax religious
and say, dearly beloved, we are gathered here together. We are gathered. The reason we're
here is because the Lord gathered us, brought us, or else we would
not be here. And I'm thankful. He called us. Christ said, I'm the good shepherd,
and I know my sheep. He said, and I called them. This
is how he gathers his people. All of God's people are gathered
by the voice of the shepherd. He said, he gathers them to hear
his voice. They're gathered together. Verse
4, "'Cause they were wandering, all we like sheep, gone astray.'"
Wandering in the wilderness. That's the word. Wandering out
there. Lost in a solitary way. No city to dwell in. Wandering
sheep. Gone astray. No city. no city,
no dwelling place. Scripture says we were strangers
and pilgrims in the earth, not citizens, not fellow citizens
of the household of faith. Not civilized people, but if
you will, gypsies, tramps, and thieves, wandering around, trespassers
on God's earth, giving him no thanks, asking no permission,
trespassers, wandering over his good earth. But God, rich in mercy, gathers these
wanderers. They're hungry, hungry, verse
5, hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted. Hungry and thirsty. I thought back about the Jews
in the wilderness, the children of Israel. They wandered a long
time and it says they were hungry. And what they wanted to go back
to Egypt for was leeks and onions. That's what they really desired,
leeks and onions. I thought, if you're thirsty,
you sure don't want to eat an onion. Do you? It'll just make you more thirsty.
Well, our Lord said, the water of this world will leave you
thirsty. Most just hunger and thirst after
this world, the things of this world. He said, our Lord said
they won't satisfy. The wise man Solomon said they
won't satisfy. Had it all. It's vanity. empty
will not give any lasting satisfaction at all. You can have it all,
but it won't satisfy you at all because in the end you will lose
it all. But now Christ said, if any man
drinketh of the water that I shall give him, he'll never thirst. What is that water? Christ said,
I am the water of life. I am the water of life. Blessed
are they that hunger and thirst after Christ who is our righteousness. Who does? Who does hunger and
thirst? Those whom the Lord makes hungry
and thirsty. If you have any interest in Christ at all, be
thankful. That's not naturalism. We love
leeks and onions. No, that's what we thirst and
hunger for. But if God, in mercy and grace,
gathers you, draws you, and gives you a hunger and a thirst, a
real soul need for Christ and Him crucified, oh, you're blessed. You've been drawn. You've been
gathered. Well, verse 6 says, they cried
unto the Lord in their trouble. Man is born of woman. few days
and full of what? Trouble. In this world, nothing
but trouble, mostly. And it says, they cried unto
the Lord in their trouble, and He delivered them out of their
distresses. You know, it's great mercy of
the Lord to bring us into trouble. to give us distress, it's the
mercy of the Lord. Each time here before he says,
Oh, the goodness of God, it says he delivers them out of their
distresses. The word distress, I don't always
look words up, but I look this up. The word distress means narrowness
or tightness. Or in our language, hemmed in. Hemmed in, trapped, cornered,
pressed down, apprehended. No way out. It's of the Lord's mercies if
he brings you to this point where you're trapped. You're cornered. Your back's against the wall.
You're between a rock and a hard place. You've been apprehended. And there's no way out. Isn't that what he did to the
children of Israel? He brought them out into the wilderness.
They wandered. They murmured. They complained. They hungered
and thirsted and so forth. They wandered. And finally, he
brought them to that great sea, that great sea, that great gulf
fixed between them and the promised land. And on this side was a
great mountain, on this side was a great mountain, and their
enemies were behind them. Pursue them. Much stronger than
they. And they had nowhere to go and nowhere to turn. They
were trapped. They were hemmed in. They were
in distress. You ever been in distress because
of your sin? Because of your sin? See these
first few examples. The troubles that they got into
were of their own making. All their troubles that they
got into were their own making because of their own sin, their
own rebellion, their own ingratitude, their own sin. And it was of the Lord's mercies
that He showed them, you're this way because you've got yourself
in this mess. And He hemmed them up and backed
them in a corner and said, now what are you going to do? You ever had somebody, my brothers,
my oldest brother, older brother, I was a baby, and they picked
on me relentlessly. And they would get me down and
torture me, you know, the Chinese torture, all of that, torture
me terribly. My mother to this day still doesn't
claim that they, you know, she still denies it. She always loved them best. Now that's out. No, but sir,
they get me down and just torture me, you know, just and what they
made me do. I couldn't get over bigger than
me and stronger than me. I was in distress. Put their
hand on my mouth so I couldn't holler for mom. And they'd say,
give up. Give up. Cry uncle. A voice of the Lord's mercy.
If He brings you to the point where you're hopeless, you're
helpless, you're hemmed in, you're in a strait, you're in distress
because of your sin. Look what I've done. Look where
I am. Look at me. This is all my fault. Now what are you going to do?
I can't do anything. Cry. Then they cried under the Lord. His ear is open unto the cry
of the helpless. Verse 7 says He delivered them. Verse 7 says He led them by the
right way. And it says a way that seemeth
right unto men, unto young people. There's a way. I want to go out
and make my way into the world. What you'll do, what they'll
do, Brother Mack, is go in the same way that you went. They'll
go in that broad way that leads to destruction. It's the way
of all flesh, the way of the transgressor. And it's hard,
Scripture says. And the end of it is absolute
destruction. You'll destroy yourself. I'm
heading out. I'm going my own way. You better
hope the Lord stops your way and puts you in the right way. You see, there is a way. There's
one way. It's a narrow way. It's a straight
way. It leads straight to Him who is God. Because all we, like
sheep, have gone astray, we've turned every man to our own way. But God, rich in mercy, chose
a people, gathered some of these wandering, rebellious, prodigal
sons, and brought them home. Put them in the right way. Go
to a city. Look at verse 7. Put them in
a city. put them in a city, a habitation, brought them home, gave them
a bed, gave them a feast, gave them a table, gave them a family
to call their home, a habitation, a place they can call their own
and that they can say, I'm not leaving now. That's what the
prodigal said. Oh, I don't want to go anywhere.
Don't give me what's due me. Don't give me what's coming to
me. Just let me be a servant right here in my father's house. I just want to stay right here.
Habitation. Permanent citizens. You that
were strangers in pilgrimages are now fellow citizens of the
household of faith, a habitation. Who did this? Oh, that men would
praise the Lord for his goodness and his wonderful works. Can
you trace back, you believers, you older believers, Can you
trace back the Lord's wonderful works in bringing you to where
you are now? Go back and look at all the marvelous,
sovereign providences of our Lord throughout your life, the
restraining grace of God, the constraint making you go here
and not go there, do this, do that, don't do this, taking this
away or giving that, and bringing you to where you are now. Can't
you? Oh, that man would praise the Lord. for his wonderful work,
for his goodness. He said, the Lord is goodness,
the Lord is good. And his wonderful works to the
children of men. He satisfies the longing soul,
you know, when he brings you here. He satisfies you. I've told you
before that when I was real young, I didn't like certain foods,
especially like green beans. I just, I was a meat and potatoes
man, Davis. That's all I liked to eat, meat
and potatoes. When I was really young, I was forced to eat certain
things that I didn't like. They were good for me, but I
didn't like them at all. And you never would have told
me that I would like green beans, that I would choose it. I'd go
through a smorgasbord, and I'd, looky there, green beans. I'll
take those. No way. It was the same way that
you would have never told me that I would choose to come here
and sit and listen to this gospel and love it. But I do. Don't you? Blessed is that man
and he gives you this hunger and this thirst for Christ and
fills you up. It really doesn't get any better
than this, does it sister? It really doesn't. This life
doesn't get any better than this right now. It really doesn't. That's the reason Peter said,
let's just build three tabernacles. We'll just stay here. That's
the reason you people linger after the service, don't you?
There was a time when you couldn't get out fast enough. But now
you kind of hang around. Why? Just loathe to leave. Oh, that man. And you weren't
always that way, were you? You must have been gathered.
You're one of the gathered. Dearly beloved. We have been
gathered together by the goodness of our God and his wonderful
work. Look at the next thing. It says,
verse 10, those that sit in darkness and a shadow of death, bound
in affliction. Why? Because they rebelled against
God. In darkness, sin is darkness. Sin is a pit. Sin is a black
hole. Sin is a pit of corruption and
scripture says men love darkness rather than light. Love sin.
Run to it. Live for it. Live in it and will
die because of it. Death passed upon all men for
all have sinned. Death cast its shadow on everything
and everyone. You can't get away from it. As
long as the sun is shining, here's a good illustration, as long
as the sun is out and shining, There's a shadow cast. Death
casts its shadow. As long as God is, there's this
shadow. We walk through the valley of
the shadow of death, meaning everything we run into, everyone,
everything dies. We run into it on the road. We
run into it wherever. Things die. This shadow of death. And we're in fear to it. The
Hebrews says Christ delivered his people from the fear of death.
But they're bound in affliction. Verse 10, affliction and iron,
bonds of sin, these chains, they're chains. Sin is, we're bound by it, by nature,
we're bound by it. You ever had handcuffs on you?
You can't get out. You can't get out. Only if somebody
sets you free. These bonds of affliction. Why?
Verse 10, because we rebelled against the words of God. Hearing
is a good way, walk therein, he said, but they said, we won't. Oh my, stand ye in the ways and
ask and seek for the old paths wherein is the good way and you'll
find rest for your soul." But they said, we will not. We don't
want that way. Didn't we? All of us. This is
the good way. God who cannot lie. God who is
good. This is the good way. It's the
right way. It's the only way. It's the only way. There is no
other way. Christ said, I am the way, the truth. Everything
else, everyone else is a lie. I can't lie. I am the truth,
the life. He that liveth and believeth
will never die. He that hath the Son hath life.
He that hath not the Son, it doesn't matter what you have,
doesn't have life. He's dead. Listen to me." Walked
there and he said, I won't do it. I won't do it. Okay then.
And every one of us were like that. Okay then. Go on. And they did. We did. Oh, my,
because we rebelled against God, rejected the counsel of the Most
High God. So what did happen? Verse 12,
He brought them down, their heart with labor, laboring, heavy laden,
trying to find this, trying to find that, trying to do this,
trying to do that, labor. The heart, see how the heart
are the issues of Oh, if the Lord will break our hearts over
our sin, break our hearts, show us that nothing at all will satisfy
your heart, and cause us, verse 12, to fall down and none to
help. Then they cry unto the Lord in
their trouble, and he saves them out of their distresses once
again. in distress industry. Oh my he brought him out who
does this work. Oh I was glad John the psalmist
said thou hast made me glad through thy work. See all the works the
wonderful works of the Lord in salvation all the wonderful sovereign
providences of the Lord provisions and hindrances and so forth that
he does to work together, they all work together to do this
work of salvation. And the psalmist said, you've
made me glad through thy work. Salvation is the work of the
Lord. God that worketh in us and for
us on our behalf. So he brought them down. They
fell down. There's none to help. They cried unto the Lord. He
delivered them out of their distresses. He brought them out of darkness.
I once was blind. How many can say that? I once
was blind. I don't know much, but this I
know. I once was blind. Now I see. Blind to myself, blind
to God, blind to the world, blind to my so-called friends, blind
to the vanity, blind, blind, blind. But thy entrance, the
entrance of thy Word, giveth light, sight. Now my eyes had
been He delivers him out of darkness. That one who sat on the dung
heap and thought it was a good place to be. The prodigal who was in the hog
pen and thought he was enjoying himself. Oh, I'm living a good
life. Oh, man. Out of darkness. Verse 14, a shadow of death. Death casts no more shadow on
God's people. No more shadow. Our Lord, why? Why? Why is there no more shadow? Because the sun went into that
tomb. Tammy, the sun, the sunlight
shone into that dark tomb, that grave. He went in there and revealed
it all. There's nothing in here to fear.
There's nothing to fear. Death has no dominion over you. Christ went in to that shadow
of death, cast Dispersed it and came out and said, there's no
fear. You have nothing to fear. Look,
I am he that lived and died. Behold, I'm alive evermore. You saw me go into that grave.
Now here I am. And I'm telling you, you're going
in there, your body, but you're coming out. You're not dying.
No more shadow. Nothing to fear. Nothing to fear. brought them out, break their
bands asunder. These captivity, let it captive,
Christ did, let captivity captive. Oh, that men would praise the
Lord for His goodness, for His wonderful works to the children
of men. He hath broken the gates of bread. He hath cut the bars
of iron and sundry, no one but Him. Salvations of the Lord. That's what old Jonas said when
he was down in the belly of the whale. Salvations of the Lord. When he realized that, the whale
vomited him out. Look at the next thing. It says,
Fools. Fools, verse 17, because of their
transgression, because of their iniquity, are afflicted. Adam and Eve were fools, weren't
they? Adam and Eve were foolish. They brought all their troubles
on themselves, didn't they? All their afflictions. They were
living in a garden with God. Paradise. So foolish. My, my. Hey, you're talking about
selling the birthright for a mess of pottage. My, my. Foolish. So foolish. The word
fool or foolish means simple. I looked that up. Also it means
lacking good sense. Not to have good sense it means
to be easily seduced. Fool. Fool. It also means stupid. I was so stupid. Have you ever
well. How many times have you said,
what a fool I've been? I've been such a fool. How could
I have been so foolish to do that, to end up there? Look where
I've gotten myself. How many times have you said
that? Why did I fall for that? How was I so easily seduced by
that? I've been so stupid. Lord, and
then they cry. Lord, would you save this stupid
fellow? You know, the Lord saveth the
stupid. That's what the scripture said. He saved it, the simple,
the stupid, the easily seduced. Are you so foolish? Oh, fools,
he said, and slow to believe all that the Father hath promised,
all that the Prophet hath. Have you no faith? No, we don't.
Well, I've come to save the stupid. I've come to give life to the
foolish, wisdom to the foolish. Oh, in verse 18, they get down
because of their stupidity and their foolishness so that nothing,
their soul abhorred, nothing will satisfy. That's a good place
to be, you know. To be so far down that nothing
and no one can help you or save you except Him. And then they
cry. And you're ready to die near
the gates of death. Then they cry. It's a shame we
have to get so far down. But yet, it's the goodness of
God. It really is. Bring us down and
cry unto the Lord. So far down is no place to look
but up. And he saves them, hems them
up, puts them in a trap. Brother
Kelly, he opens them. The other day, my wife and I
were watching a bird. Boy, this is a good picture of
election scripture says not a bird sparrow falls to the ground without
your heavenly father said the very hairs of your head or no.
You believe that. It's the God of the Bible not
a sparrow falls to the ground that God Almighty didn't ordain
it and purpose it before the world began. So I don't believe
that. I don't understand that. I don't either but I believe
it. That's God. You see God is infinitely greater
than we are. That's why he's God. Not a spirit. Well, Mindy and I were pulling
out of the parking lot of Gabe's music store, and the traffic
was busy that day. And a little bird, a little fledgling,
a little bird, fresh out of the nest, fell right down in the
middle—apparently it was his first day out of the nest—and
landed right in the middle of that highway. Mindy went, Do
something. And, you know, cars were just
shoo, shoo, shoo, shoo. His mother came down. Remember
that? His mother came down to try to get him out of the road.
Car came out. Mother flew off. Cars shoo, shoo,
shoo, shoo. They ran over top of that bird.
That bird flew out and they shoo, shoo, missing it. They couldn't
hit that bird. Ten cars. They couldn't touch
him. Finally, I did. I got across
the road, and there he was laying there, and I picked him up in
my hand. I said, I'm going to set him free. He's going to get
killed. I picked him up, and what do
I need with a bird? A sparrow. You know how many
there are? Well, I went over and picked him up, and I went
over to a place, a broad place, a big place, and went like this.
Come on, you're free. You know what he did? right back. Didn't he? I said, you see this? I threw him up, flew around, and
landed right back. When the Lord sets his captives
free, they run right back to Him. Keep me. I don't want out there.
I think that little bird was saying, I'm going to get hit
by a car. Really, he he's the one that
breaks their bands. They cry and he sets them free
from their distress, their captivity, send his word. Here's how he
does it. He sends his word. This is the
only thing. This is the power of God. This
is the only thing that is able to save to the uttermost. This is the only thing, the word
of God, according to the will of God, through the spirit of
God, that's able to save, the old saying, to the gutter most,
the worst, the chief only thing. We can't do it. Talk to our friends,
our children, our family, our husbands, wives, parents who
were blue in the face, we can't convince them of anything. One
word. Do you see the importance of
what we're doing here? It pleased God by the foolishness of preaching.
What I'm doing now, what the world calls foolishness, is the
power and the wisdom of God. Those of you who have experienced
it know it so, don't you? I did, there was a day, I'll
never believe that, but God says, you will believe this. And John,
I did and I do and here I am. Only thing, he sent his word
and healed them. They got this disease, it's fatal,
they've all got it and they're going to die from it, unless
God. How's he healed? Sent his word
and healed them, John. sent Christ to these bunch of
lepers, to a leper colony, and he became a leper to set them
free. He was made sin for them, sent
his word and healed them. Sent Christ to become sin for
us who knew no sin, that they might be pulled out of the leper
colony. May the righteousness of God
in him. That's how. That's how he was.
Sent his word and delivered them from their destruction. from
killing themselves. Brother Kelly, we were bound
and determined. Brother Sam, we were bound and determined
to kill ourselves, weren't we, as young men? But God saved us
from destruction, from destroying ourselves. Oh, that men would
praise the Lord for His goodness and His wonderful works to a
sorry bunch of nobody. So, let them sacrifice. Verse
22, how do we praise the Lord? Down in verse 32, how do we praise
the Lord for his goodness? We get in a congregation of people.
That's how. That's the best way. Praise him
in the assembly. That's the best way. Why does
God ordain this thing of public worship? Because he gets more
glory. One tongue can praise him, yeah.
Two tongues can praise him louder. Ten tongues can really praise
him. A bunch of tongues, a bunch of birds set free can sure make
some joyful noise, can't they? That's why. Because that's what
God has ordained. He gets more glory in a congregation. Besides, that's what sheep are.
They have to have other sheep. And that's what heaven is. This
is what heaven's all about. We're never alone in heaven.
We're never going to be alone on the new earth, no sir. Sheep. God will never leave his own.
We won't want him to. A vast congregation, an assembly,
a bunch of those who've been gathered, gathered together to
give him praise. That's how we praise him. Well,
look, lastly, and I hope I have time. He says, they that go down
to the sea, verse 23, and ships do business in great waters.
These see the works of the Lord as wonders. Now, all these other troubles
and distresses were of our own making because of our own sin
and rebellion and so forth, because of our wandering. This, these
troubles, These are trials sent by the Lord to all of his people. All of his sheep will go through
trials, a trial of their faith being more precious than gold
that's tried by fire. These are trials sent by the
Lord, and they go down into ships. That's this fellowship of the
gospel. And they do business in deep waters, deep trials. These see. In these deep trials
and troubles and tribulations, these see the works of the Lord.
These see and end up having this peace that passes understanding.
These see the works of the Lord and His wonders, the wonderful
mercy and grace and consolation and comfort and presence and
truth of God's Word in the deep. In the deep. See, this thing of trial of our faith, the ship,
they go down in the sea and ship. The only real good boat is a
seaworthy boat. You know that? A ship. One that's
seaworthy. We're not talking here about
a canoe on a farm pond. Somebody can, I've got a good
boat here, a little John boat. Let's take it out on this farm
pond and try it out. That's no indication it's a good
boat. But now one that goes out to
sea, out in those deep, dark waters where you can't get back
to land, and then go through these difficult trials that God
sends, talking about distress. Look at verses 24, 25, I'm sorry. God commanded and raises the
stormy wind. which lifteth up the waves thereof."
Trial after trial. You know, Job went through it,
didn't he? Wave after wave of sorrow hit
him. Trouble hit him. Who did that? Who did all that? Eli. Eli, when the worst news
he'd ever heard came upon him. He said, it's the Lord. The Lord
did this. It's the Lord. Wave after wave
came on. He commanded, and raiseth the
stormy wind, and lifteth up the wave. Verse 26, they mount up
to heaven, up, and they go way down into the depths, and their
souls melted because of trouble. Up and down, up and down. How
many have been there? Through trials and tribulations,
up and down. Until finally, it says, they
reel to and fro, verse 27, stagger like a drunken man, and they
finally reach this end. They're at their wit's end, meaning
don't know where to go, where to turn. I've tried everything
I know. I don't know anything. I'm at
my wit's end. I don't know what to do. Here's the thing to do. Here's
what they must do. Strike sail. Put down the sail, everything
you trust in. Cast all the lading off the ship.
Cast your care. Cut off the ropes. Paul, the apostle, was in a ship
with a bunch of men one time, and a storm like this came up.
And they had to strike sail, bring them down. They cast everything
that they owned into the sea. That won't help you now. And
they had a lifeboat. They thought, well, if all else
fails, we'll get in there. Paul said, cut the ropes. Except you abide in the ship,
you'll perish. But every man that abides in
the ship will be safe. Do you know what that ship is? That's the ark, that's Christ.
Noah's ark didn't have a sail, didn't have a rudder. Noah didn't know the course,
didn't have a chart, didn't have a compass. It was totally in
the mercy and the hands of the Lord. Boy, don't you know they
had doubts and fears and all that, but they were in Him. They
were in him. Shut up. That's what it means.
This is what it means to be shut up to faith. At your wits end. Where do I turn? Then they cry. Then they cry. And the Lord brings
them out. He makes a storm of calm. Makes the waves still. Peace. Be still. Peace that passes understanding. Those disciples. We didn't think
we were going to get through this. We didn't think we were
going to make it. Thought we were going down, going under
through this. Thought I was all over. I was
at my wits end. Look now. Look, I've got a piece
that I didn't think possible. Who did this? He did. The same
one that sent the waves, the wind. See, that ship, that ship is
Christ. And it's not our faith is not
what saves us. It's who we're in. It's who our faith is in, Christ. If the ship makes it, we'll make
it. So, oh, he brings them to their
desired haven. Verse 30, they're glad, it's
quiet. Oh Lord, the prodigal was glad
to be home. He was out wild, running around. I want to be just home, settled.
I want to be a good citizen of this house. That's all I want
to be. Don't let me out there running around anymore. The disciple
didn't want to run out to ship and go fishing anymore. Let me
be a landlubber from this day forward. Oh, I want to be in the desired
haven. That's all I want. Desire to
hate. Oh, that men would praise the
Lord for His goodness and His wonderful works to the children
of men. We all have a story to tell,
don't we? We spend our lives as a tale
that is told. And that tale tells of the goodness
and the wonderful works of the Lord to the children of men. That's what it tells. OK, very
good. Let's turn to him number 355
and saying. Let's sing the first, fourth
and fifth verses. From every stormy wind that blows From every dwelling-tide of woe
There is a calm, a sure retreat, Is found beneath the mercy seat. Verse 4. Ah, whither could we
flee for aid, When tempted, desolate, dismayed, Or how the host of
hell's defeat, Had suffering saints no mercy seen? Ah, there on eagle wings we soar,
and sin and sin smolest no more, and heaven comes down, our souls
to free, while glory crowns the mercy seat.
