Keeping God's commandments is an expression of knowing Him, but it is not a prerequisite for salvation.
The Bible teaches in 1 John 2:3-5 that we know Him if we keep His commandments. However, it is essential to understand that this is not a prerequisite for knowing Him. John is asserting that those who truly know Christ will display their relationship through their obedience to His words. This is not about living perfectly in accordance with the law — none can do that — but rather a reflection that true believers follow Christ's commands to believe in Him and to love one another as He has commanded.
1 John 2:3-5
We know we are in Christ if we believe in Him and love one another as He commanded.
According to 1 John 3:23, the commandment we are to keep is to believe in the name of Jesus Christ and to love one another. This is foundational to our identity as believers. If we genuinely believe in Christ and demonstrate love for our brethren, it is evidence that we are in Him. John clearly connects our relationship with Christ to our love for others, emphasizing that true love manifests in obedience to His commandments, reflecting the love that Christ has for us.
1 John 3:23
Loving one another is a command of Christ and essential to demonstrating our faith.
In John 15:12, Jesus commands us to love one another as He has loved us. This love is crucial because it not only reflects our understanding of God’s love for us but also serves as an identifying mark of true discipleship. If we claim to know Him yet fail to love the brethren, as John writes in 1 John 2:4, we are liars and the truth is not in us. Our love for one another is the outward expression of our inward faith, showcasing the transformative power of Christ in our lives.
John 15:12, 1 John 2:4
We keep Christ's commandments by loving Him and one another, empowered by the Holy Spirit.
Keeping Christ's commandments involves believing in Him and loving others. As expressed in John 14:15, if we love Christ, we will keep His commandments. This is not a burdensome task; rather, it's a natural overflow of love from a heart transformed by the Holy Spirit. Believers are empowered by the Spirit of God to will and to do God's good pleasure, which includes loving Christ and one another. Thus, our ability to keep His commandments is a result of His work in our lives, enabling us to live in accordance with His desires.
