O you money-grubbers! By Charles Spurgeon 1 Samuel chapter 9 verse 27 Stand still a while, that I may show you the word of God. Some folks are so superficial that you cannot get them to be still and think. Many dread the process of thinking almost as much as they would a lash of the whip on their backs. They cannot bear to consider and meditate on eternal truths. God has distinguished them above brutes by giving them the faculty of thought. But they try to ignore this high privilege. Any silly tale or stupid song or foolish amusement or pastime will entice them. But they cannot think on serious matters.

They go through life, not as the bee, which sucks honey from every flower, but as the butterfly, which regards the garden as only a place over which it may flit, and where it may occasionally alight. But gather nothing. Let us not be fluttering butterflies our whole lives. May God grant that we may not follow the fashion of this vain and fleeting world. May frivolity and levity be taken away from us, and may we in sober earnestness attend to eternal realities.

Most people are so exceedingly careful about the things of this world that you cannot get them to think of the Word of God. What is heaven to them? You attempt to talk to them about Jesus and all of His beauties, and they will not give you a thought. but wave a dollar near them, and you shall excite all their desires. Inform them how they could be rich and famous, and they will pay you for the advice. But tell them about Jesus, and you must beg them to read half a page of scripture. They turn away from it as a dry and worthless thing. Oh, you money-grubbers, have you souls at all? Or are you nothing else but bodies? Are you mere leather purses for holding money?

Do you expect to live in eternity? Or do you think that you shall die like the stray dog in the streets? O my hearer, if you were not immortal, then I could well excuse you for not thinking of eternity. But if indeed you are destined to live forever, than it is but the commonest common sense that you should begin to prepare for that eternal abode in which you must dwell world without end. Stand still a while that I may show you the word of God. It is appointed for man to die once and after that comes judgment. It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. Prepare to meet your God.
