Ordered of the Lord
Prov. 20:16-30

In the sermon "Ordered of the Lord," Caleb Hickman explores the profound Reformed doctrine of God’s sovereignty over all aspects of life, emphasizing that every detail of existence is under divine order and control. The key argument is that God, who is seated on His throne, is not only the Creator but also the Director of all things, ensuring that nothing occurs outside of His ordained purpose. Hickman supports his claims with specific Scripture references, notably Proverbs 20:24, which asserts that "a man's goings are of the Lord," and emphasizes that God's planning and counsel are perfect and absolute. He draws upon various examples from Scripture, including the determinative counsel of God in salvation and the omnipotence of God over creation, to stress the comforting truth that believers can rest in God’s sovereign plan, particularly concerning their salvation. The practical significance of his message is that it offers believers assurance and peace amid life’s trials, reminding them that their steps and struggles are divinely orchestrated for their ultimate good and God’s glory.

Key Quotes

“It is the Lord that must give the increase all the time, all the time.”

“Man's goings are of the Lord. How can a man then understand his own way?”

“The glorious thought that I have for us tonight is that our steps are ordered of the Lord.”

“Salvation is of the Lord. Christ is all in salvation, and it's all by grace, all by grace.”

What does the Bible say about God's sovereignty over our lives?

The Bible teaches that all of man's goings are ordered by the Lord (Proverbs 20:24).

Scripture is unequivocal in declaring that the Lord has ordered all things, including the steps and lives of individuals. Proverbs 20:24 states, 'Man's goings are of the Lord; how can a man then understand his own way?' This emphasizes that every aspect of our lives is under God's sovereign control and guidance. It is not merely that God knows our paths; He actively directs them according to His divine purpose and counsel, ensuring that everything unfolds according to His will. This truth brings comfort and assurance to believers, knowing that our lives are not dictated by chance or fate but are purposefully orchestrated by our sovereign God.

Proverbs 20:24

How do we know that our steps are ordered by God?

God's sovereignty assures that our steps are ordered according to His divine will (Psalm 37:23).

The assurance that our steps are ordered by God is foundational in the believer's faith. Psalm 37:23 affirms, 'The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delighteth in his way.' This scripture reflects God's intimate involvement in the lives of His people, orchestrating each step they take for His glory and their good. When we acknowledge God's sovereignty, we recognize that our journeys and experiences are not random but are divinely guided. Even our experiences of difficulty are part of His plan to teach us dependence on Him and to draw us closer to His truth. This understanding allows believers to rest in God's perfect plan, knowing that nothing surprises Him and that He is guiding us toward our ultimate good.

Psalm 37:23

Why is it important to understand that everything is ordered by the Lord?

Understanding God's ordering of all things helps believers trust and rest in His sovereignty.

Grasping that everything is ordered by the Lord is vital for a believer's peace and assurance in life. This truth reassures us that we are not alone and that our lives are part of a grand design crafted by a loving and sovereign God. Proverbs 16:9 reiterates this concept by stating, 'A man's heart deviseth his way: but the Lord directeth his steps.' This recognition fosters a deep trust in God's purpose, allowing us to relinquish our anxieties as we face life's uncertainties. Knowing that God is in full control encourages us to look upon our trials and tribulations with a perspective of hope. As we depend on His ordered plan, we can find peace and security in the assurance that all things work together for good (Romans 8:28).

Proverbs 16:9, Romans 8:28

How does God's sovereignty relate to our salvation?

God's sovereignty is fundamental in the salvation of His elect, as He has ordered it before time began (2 Timothy 1:9).

The sovereignty of God is intricately woven into the fabric of salvation. 2 Timothy 1:9 states, 'Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began.' This scripture highlights that our salvation is not a product of human effort but a gracious gift from God, planned in eternity past. Understanding this doctrine helps believers realize that salvation is secured, and it rests entirely on God's will and purpose. This emphasis on divine sovereignty alleviates the burden of performance from the believer and instills confidence in the completed work of Christ. True salvation is not contingent upon our actions but upon God's unchanging decree to save His people, affirming that He will bring to completion the good work He began in us.

We're in the book of Proverbs, in the 20th chapter, if you'd like to turn there. Proverbs chapter 20. I may say this often, but it's always true, and I've never said it when it wasn't true. I have a simple message for us tonight. It is the Lord that must give the increase all the time, all the time. It doesn't matter whether it's a lot of details or if it's simple, it doesn't, he has to be the one that makes the difference. And that's our desire tonight is that he would do just that. What I'll say to begin with is the one thing that makes our God, the Lord, our righteousness, the God, the true God, is that he has ordered all things. He has ordered all things. The scripture is clear on that. All things are ordered and sure.

It's not that he is moving things around. He's seated. That's a totally different perspective than what most people view God as. He's not playing chess, so to speak. He reigneth. He's seated on his throne. That's different than any other god because he's absolutely sovereign. He's absolutely, well, he's purposed all things according to his will. He's successful. and everything that he's ever done, he cannot fail.

You talk about other Jesuses who try to do something but can't, they're failures. Our God can't fail. That's the distinct difference between the true Lord and the false gods of this world. Now I wanna read this together. Proverbs 20, verse 16, and we're gonna read through the remainder of the chapter. Again, he is speaking different comparisons. He's going back and forth. And he says in verse 16, take his garment that is surety for a stranger and take a pledge of him for a strange woman. Bread of deceit is sweet to a man, but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel. Every purpose is established by counsel, and with good advice make war.

He that goeth about as a tailbearer revealeth secrets, therefore meddle not with him that flattereth with his lips. Whoso curses his father, his mother, his lamp, shall be put out in obscure darkness. An inheritance may be gotten hastily at the beginning, but the end thereof shall not be blessed. Say not thou I will recompense evil, but wait on the Lord. and he shall save thee. Diverse weights are an abomination unto the Lord, and a false balance is not good. Man's goings are of the Lord.

How can a man then understand his own way? It is a snare to a man who devoureth that which is holy, and after vows to make inquiry. A wise king scattereth the wicked, and bringeth the wheel over them. The spirit of man is the candle of the Lord, searching all the inward parts of the belly. Mercy and truth preserve the king, and his throne is upholden by mercy. The glory of young men is their strength, and the beauty of old men is their gray head. The blueness of a wound cleanseth away evil, so do stripes the inward parts of the belly. So each of these are individual thoughts, individual proverbs, and we're not going to go through each of these.

The message that the Lord's given me tonight is titled, Ordered of the Lord. Ordered of the Lord. Look at the verse 24. Man's goings are of the Lord. How can a man then understand his own way? Man's goings are of the Lord. That word going is the same as steps or his way. A man's ways are ordered of the Lord. A man's steps are ordered of the Lord. A man's goings are ordered of the Lord.

You know why? All things are ordered by the Lord. Not only is there nothing that has not been made that he made, or in other words, he made everything, but he ordered everything as well. He didn't just make the earth and then hope that everything works out okay. That's what we do. God don't do that. He's God. He purposes by His determinate counsel, and it is certain because He's the one that determined it.

Scripture's clear, none can stay His hand or say unto Him, what doest thou? None can question Him or challenge His authority. None can, we don't have any power. Scripture tells us, John chapter 17, the Lord said, the Father's given me all power, both in heaven and earth. So if He has all power, we have none. That's the only possible conclusion, right?

Ordered of the Lord. There is nothing that is not ordered of the Lord. But the glorious thought that I have for us tonight is that our steps are ordered of the Lord. Our goings are ordered of the Lord. What I mean by that is every single thing that we have done in our life. has brought us to this place here tonight and it was ordered of the Lord for us to be here right now. Everything that we have done in our life and every step that we have taken was ordered by the Lord to bring us to the Lord Jesus Christ as his people. Left us to ourself, we would have wandered off. But he says, my sheep hear my voice and I know them and they what? Follow me. They follow me. Our steps are ordered by the Lord.

Because of the counsel to determine the steps, every step, and I'm not trying to sound funny when I say this, but every hiccup, every sneeze, every bite of food that you've eaten, everything you've ever drank before, every drop of rain that's fell upon you, it's ordered by God. We forget to remember sometimes how amazingly sovereign our God is whenever And I speak from experience on this, whenever we each have our own little ponds, don't we? Our own lives, I'll call ponds, just for the sake of example. Most of us think it's an ocean. It's not, it's just a little pond, it's a puddle. And then a rock gets thrown in it by somehow making ripples and we've all been out of shape when God's still seated on the throne. He ain't changed. He's not gonna change. He's the same yesterday, today, and forever. Everything is ordered. That pebble that hit that water, God made that. Didn't catch him off guard.

That's a metaphor for the things of life, but how much more precious is it to know that all things are ordered and sure for the Lord's people in their everyday life? He said not one sparrow falls to the ground unnoticed, and you're worth many sparrows. Our Lord seeth all, he knoweth all, and he doeth all things well. All things are ordered by the Lord. I love the thought that everything that we just described was purposed before time ever began. It wasn't that this morning we woke up And then the Lord decided to make us order our steps today. This is already done. This was done in eternity past.

This was something God had predetermined by his own counsel. The same counsel where Peter stands up on the day of Pentecost in Acts chapter two. Verse 23, he says, and you, talking to the ones he was preaching to, he said, and you have taken him, the Lord Jesus Christ, and you crucified and slain the King of glory. And he tells us why, by the determinate counsel of God. God had ordained that.

That's why every time they tried to get Christ, they couldn't, unless he said, my time's not come yet. Remember the one time they were going to push you over the cliff and he passed through them. Another time they was going to lay hands on him, he just passed right through. They couldn't. He's God. He's God.

All things are ordered. The most glorious part about all things being ordered is the salvation of the Lord's people. That is the part that gives us the rest that our souls so desire and long for. Scripture is clear. Marvel not what shall be on the morrow, for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth. In Proverbs chapter three, But we do know that salvation is finished. We do know and have peace in that alone.

And if you know when you lay your head on your pillow tonight, that if you take your last breath, you're going to awake in his likeness, being glorified in his presence. What is there that can rattle you? What is there that can cause you to fret? And yet we do so often, don't we? Because we lose sight of that. We lose sight of everything that God has done. is complete. He's completed everything that he set out to do. He's seated as the successful redeemer of his people. Who's gonna dethrone him? No one can.

Now on the other side, mankind, by nature, we think we've arrived. We come up to, we have all these thoughts and ideas, and man constantly tries to make God out to be smaller and smaller and smaller. And in Romans chapter one, he talks about how they turn the incorruptible God into corruptible things. And they change the truth into the lie. That's what they do.

But yet the Lord's people, we have rest in knowing our God can't be changed. He said, I am the Lord, I change not, therefore you sons of Jacob are not consumed. That's good news. If you find yourself a sinner, if the Lord reveals to us that we are sinners needing a savior, needing a substitute, what a glorious hope we have in knowing our God is absolutely sovereign over the inhabitants of heaven and earth and even in hell. Everything, brethren, God. Ordered everything. Down to the minute detail.

When we are convinced to believe. The truth of the Lord that he is sovereign and we're made to have repentance. That's what that is. Whenever you see God as he is high, lifted up seated. He gives faith to believe. And when that truth is given and believed by the Lord's bestowed faith, we say with David in Psalm 3, and we read this for our call to worship, salvation belongeth unto the Lord. Thy blessing is upon thy people. Thy blessing. So that's the blessing. Salvation is, belongeth to the Lord.

Thy blessing is to thy people. And at the end of that, it has that word, Selah. And we don't ever say that because that was a stanza in music basically that meant pause. So he's saying pause right there and think about that. His blessing is to his people. It's already been ordered. It's already been ordered. All things are ordered of the Lord. Now I love the fact the steps of his people are ordered. My steps, your steps.

David said this in Psalm 37, the steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord and he delighteth in his way. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down for the Lord upholdeth him with his hand. I have been young, now am I old and never have I seen the righteous forsaken nor his seed baking bread.

It's the Lord that upholds his people. He ordered their salvation entirely. I love that salvation started with God and it ends with God. I love that All of it was ordered by the Lord and performed by the Lord for His elect people. He redeemed them on the cross of Calvary. It wasn't an attempt because He ordered it and no one could stop Him. We're upheld by the Lord's hand.

It wasn't just that He says, okay, now you're saved. Now you have to make it through this life on your own. That's not it at all. He says, if I go not away, the comforter will not come. He sent the comforter, His Holy Spirit, in order to comfort his people's hearts, give us faith to believe him and look to him as we go through this dark world. We're never alone because our Lord is light. He said, I am the light of the world, but when I go away, you are the light of the world. That's the new man, isn't it? That's what that's talking about. His people are kept by his power. Is it not true, brethren, when we see our sin, we have no place of rest.

I'm never. I'm always discouraged. You have any joy whatsoever, any happiness, turn the news on. You'll get discouraged pretty quick. I'm just telling you, it's truth. And look at all the things that they're pushing that's contrary to the word of God. I'm not getting political, but look at politics. How joyous is that? You understand? I mean, there's nothing that brings joy outside of this gospel.

But I'm not near as burdened and remorseful and sorrowful when I look out at the world as I am when I look here at this old man, at this nature that I have, that I'm carrying, this corpse, and the ugly sin that it is and therefore does. I need a substitute. And if you find yourself needing a substitute, know that there was a substitute ordered of the Lord before time of it began.

In the book of Revelation, John was speaking to one of the elders, and the declare went forth who is worthy to open the book and loose the seals thereof. And they looked in heaven and in earth, and none was found worthy. And I, John, began to weep much, and then one of the elders touched me. He said, weep not John, for behold, the lion of the tribe of Judah, the root of Jesse hath prevailed and is worthy to loose the book, loose the seals and open the book thereof.

He's worthy to endure the wrath and put the sin of his people away. And he was, and that's what he did. That's what he did. John saw him, first time he saw him, John chapter one, as if, as a lamb slain from the foundation of the world. That's why God created all this. That's why God ordered all of this is for the salvation of his people.

And if he sent his son and spared not his own son, but freely delivered him up, how shall he also not with him freely give us all things? What's the Lord going to withhold from you and I that we need? It might be some things that we want that we don't get, but the things that we need that we don't get, that's for our good and his glory.

We deserve far worse than we have it, don't we? Somebody asked me recently, they said, how are you doing? And I said, fantastic. And they said, why? And I said, well, we could be a lot worse, but I better not deserve. And that blew them away. They had never heard such a thing before. So I started saying that all the time now. Why am I fantastic?

Because my name is written in the Lamb's Book of Life. That's my hope, that the Lord finished his, work on the cross of Calvary. That's my hope. If that's not my hope, then I have no hope. But if I know if he has revealed himself to me, and he keeps me to the end, and my name is in that book, I have nothing to fear, not even death, not even hell. That's what the Lord ordered before time ever began, is the remedy for what we are, the remedy for the sin that we are, the problem that we have that we can't fix. And he gave his only begotten son. as the remedy. If the Lord makes you a sinner and you start looking at the world and get discouraged, and then you look at yourself and you're even more discouraged, and we all do it at some point in time, you're looking at self and you kind of, you know, kind of, you get disgusted with yourself, you just do.

And why did I do that? You know, why would I? And our adversary jumps all over that opportunity. Don't worry. He's there saying, yeah, if you were a believer, if the Lord really died for you, Lord really loved you, you wouldn't act like that. You wouldn't do that. You wouldn't say that you wouldn't. And we're sitting there beating ourself up over and over again about it. It's like, I can't fix it. All reminds you of this.

If any man sin, we have an advocate with the father, Jesus Christ, the righteous first and foremost. But the second thing I'll tell you is here's your hope. The Lord has made with me a covenant ordered. In all things ensure this is all my hope and all my salvation. That's what we heard last week, wasn't it? David's last will and Testament. The Lord hath made with me an everlasting covenant ordered, and we're going to stick with that word tonight.

That's the message. What's the Lord ordered. If a captain orders somebody in his army to do something, they are to obey that order, or they are considered to be, they could be court-martialed, they could be, depending on, they could be shot. In some countries, they don't mess around. But with our God, when he orders it, it's going to happen. It's not optional.

And he ordered everything before time ever began. And then he successfully redeemed his people by the sacrifice of himself on Calvary's tree. And the father was satisfied with that sacrifice in so much that you and I have been made the righteousness of God in him. That's what the Lord ordered. That's what the Lord ordered.

Brethren, the good news of the gospel is every step you have ever taken was ordered By God, if you're in Christ, every step you've ever taken was ordered by the Lord to bring you to Him. Don't you love that you can't mess that up? I love that. I can't mess that up. Because I know if I could, I would. I can't do anything to add to it. I can't do anything to take away from it. Why? God ordered it. God ordered it, and it's sure. The Lord makes us mercy-begging, vile sinners, and shows us our beautiful Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.

There's rest knowing all this was ordered. There's rest knowing that salvation's been secured, that Christ was successful, that everyone he died for, he redeemed. There's rest knowing that the work is finished. There's rest knowing that there's nothing for you to do to add to your salvation, and you can't do anything to take away from it. Salvation's of the Lord. Christ is all in salvation, and it's all by grace, all by grace.

Do you know why our God ordered it to be that way? The Lord ordered it to be that way. I'll go further than that and say this. If you're in Christ, you're saved before you're even born. Think about that. Lord tells us in 2 Timothy 1 verse 9, God saved you, then called you, not according to your works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ when? Before the world began. So God saved us because he ordered it to be so.

Christ, the substitute of his people, successfully redeemed them. And then in time, he sends his spirit and power to regenerate one of his dead sheep, brings them to life, reveals unto them, fear not, I've put away your sin, you shall not die. Don't you love the fact that Nathan didn't tell David, you need to go sacrifice 47 lambs and do this and that if you want that sin to be remitted. Fear not, the Lord has put away your sin, you shall not die. It was ordered before time ever began. All things are by him, ordered and sure.

Job said this, Job 14, for now thou numberest my steps, numberest. Now that has a couple of different translations to it, but it's the same word as what's used over in the New Testament. or has the same translation anyways of what's in the New Testament when he says, the very hairs of your head are numbered. And do you know what that word numbered means? It doesn't mean counted, purposed. He ordered the number of hairs on your head. He ordered, and he just given that example to say, I'm in charge. I have all power. He purposed the very hairs of your head. He purposed the, um, the steps, every step that we've ever taken.

Scripture says this in Proverbs 16, a man's heart devises his way, but the Lord directeth his steps. What a glorious hope to know our salvation is completely dependent upon God. Even in our rebellion in a false religion, even in our rebellion before we knew who God was, he was still ordering our steps. He was still bringing us to the truth.

Every step. We were trying to step farther and far away from him, didn't even know we were doing that, did we? And yet, what'd he do? He brought us back. David said this, he pulled me out of the miry clay, put my feet upon a solid rock and established my goings and put new song in my mouth, even praise unto God. He ordered it. He ordered it.

I love the thought that he put us exactly where he wanted us, even if we were even if we didn't know him, to bring us to his truth. And what is that truth? That salvation's of the Lord, all for his elect, all according to his own purpose, and all by grace. Look at verse 24 again. Man's goings are of the Lord. How can a man then understand his own way? We cannot even understand our own way, did you know that?

Not with what that's saying, think about that. What does he mean by that? Well, we think we know the way we're going, and all mankind has this, they purpose and they plan and they say, I'm going to do this. And I quoted Proverbs 3, 5 a little ago, but also, it says you ought not say, tomorrow we'll do this and tomorrow we'll do that, but you should say, if the Lord will it, for what is your life?

It is even a vapor that appeareth for a little time, then vanisheth away, that's James 4, 14. But man believes that they have a plan. They're going to do this. They're going to do that. And you remember the man in the scripture that the Lord gives us in the parable where he says he got his barns and he filled his barns full and he sat down and he said, okay, well, I'm going to have to tear down and build bigger barns. And so he does that. He tears down and builds bigger barns. And then He goes in, he says, now I can eat, drink, and be merry.

And the Lord says, thou fool, tonight your soul's required of thee. Tonight it is. No, we don't have, we, us, we don't have the ability. We don't have the ability to, we can try to plan, don't get me wrong. I mean, you don't want to not plan things, but I'm trying to say we don't undermine the Lord's purpose, do we? Mankind has caught, Tower of Babel's a fantastic example of that. Let's build us a tower to God. We're not gonna go His way, we're gonna go our way.

So they go out there and they get bricks and they fashion their bricks together with slime, which is interesting. So that word slime is atonement. So they had a false atonement is what they had. They had a false representation of the blood of Christ. But they were in the desert of all places. What happens to slime whenever it gets hot? It melts. So here they are thinking that they're gonna climb all the way up to God.

And all the Lord does is confuse their language and they disband. Man at his very best state, brethren, is vanity, is vanity. But I have good news for the Lord's people. Man's goings are of the Lord. The Lord orders, the Lord ordered all things. If we can't figure out our own way, what makes us think that we can figure out God's way? Think about that. Christ said, I am the way, the truth and the life. No man come to the Father but by me. That is the way. But his ways are higher than our ways. His thoughts are higher than our thoughts. There's no way we can find him out or figure him out. He is God and he ordered all things. How often do we get discouraged by doing what Peter did? Took his eyes off of Christ when he was walking on water. The only man that we know other than the Lord walking on water.

Said he saw the waves boisterous in the storm and beginning to sink, he said, Lord, save me. He cried out, Lord, save me. Did you know those steps on that water were ordered by the Lord? And him beginning to sink was ordered by the Lord so that he would say, Lord, save me.

That's exactly what he does to you and I in life. He may send us some kind of a distraction or something around us where we'll veer off looking to him and we'll begin to sink. And you know what I'm talking about. When you begin to sink, you begin to feel that darkness. You feel lonely. You feel I'm not talking about physically lonely.

I'm talking about where is my Where is my Lord? Where is the sweet peace that the Lord gives? I need his presence. I've looked away from him and now Lord save me. And that's whenever the sweetest words that you ever hear comes. Salvation is of the Lord, I will. I will be thou made whole. Everything the Lord brings to us. Is purposed us to cry out Lord save me. Lord, save me.

Somebody said, yeah, I got saved. I was like, well, I didn't respond to that, actually. I just listened. But I thought about it. And I said, well, if that's the case, we get saved every day. Lord, save me. Lord, save me. Lord, save me. Not a day goes by I don't pray, Lord, keep me from myself. Don't leave me to myself. Save me from myself. Forgive me of my sin.

It's ordered, the Lord ordered it to be so. He makes his children completely dependent upon him. Turn with me to Psalm 73. I had mentioned part of this earlier, but, so maybe a little redundant, but that'd be okay. David is having a pity party. That's just how it is right here in this chapter, Psalm 73. Truly God is good to Israel, even to such as are of a clean heart.

But as for me, my feet were almost gone. My steps had well nigh slipped, for I was envious at the foolish when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. For there are no bands in their death, but their strength is firm. They are not in trouble. as other men, neither are they plagued like other men, therefore pride can pass at them about as a chain, violence cover at them as a garment. David's looking at those who do not know the Lord and he's saying, he got so discouraged with this, if you go down, look at verse 13, what he says. He says, verily I thought I cleansed my heart in vain, I washed my hands in innocency. He's saying, All this has been in vain. If they have nothing to worry about, if they have everything, if it's just fine with them. And here I am. And the Lord had to make him realize something. And that was the point I was making earlier.

When we look around at the world or we look around, the scripture says, envy not the oppressor and consider none of his ways. Because every time we consider that which is around us, our eyes are not on Christ, we're not looking at the one who's ordered all things. That's when we begin to sink. And that's what was going on with David right here is his eyes were not on the Lord, it was on himself.

Let's read on verse 17. Let's read 16. Again. We didn't read 16. Hang on. What did we read? 13, okay, 13. Verily, I have cleansed my heart in vain and washed my hands in innocency. For all the day long have I been plagued and chastened every morning.

If I say I will speak thus, behold, I should offend against the generation of thy children. When I thought to know this, it was too painful for me until. Until, now that's the interjection of the gospel, whenever you have something like that. Until I went to the sanctuary of God, then I understood their end. Then understood I their end.

Until God turns our hearts towards him and remind us that our steps are ordered by him, we're liable to find ourself like David having a pity party. But if the Lord will be so gracious in reminding us of the finished work of Christ and how he said, I'll never leave you, never forsake you, you won't have much time to be envious or jealous of others. And it's predominant with David here because of the, I mean, it's obvious because of what he's saying here, but once you see the end of those that don't know the Lord, The end of those that don't know the Lord. What is their end? It's their expected end. It's eternal death. That's their end. That's their end. David said, okay, I'm not jealous of that anymore at all. I'm not envious of that anymore at all. I don't want any part of that, actually, because I have hope. We're made to cry with David after we see this.

Look at verse 21. Thus my heart was grieved, and I was pricked in my reign. So foolish was I, and ignorant I was as a beast before thee." Is that not how we feel sometimes? All the time? Oh, he says, nevertheless, I am continually with thee. Thou has holding me by my right hand, thou shalt guide me with thy counsel, afterwards receive me to glory.

Whom have I in heaven but thee, and there is none upon earth that I desire beside thee. My flesh and my heart faileth, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. For lo, they that are far from thee shall perish. Thou hast destroyed all them that go a-whoring from thee. But it is good for me to draw near to God. I have put my trust in the Lord, that I may declare all thy works." If the Lord has saved us from our sin, he will not leave us to ourself.

It's been ordered. All things are ordered. Even David's steps right here in looking at the Non believers and thinking what he thought all that was ordered of the Lord to teach him what? Salvations of the Lord. He says he's gonna receive me up into glory one day. He was able to rejoice in the end of it The darker the trial brethren the Lord promises.

He has grace sufficient grace more than sufficient for every trial It's been ordered by our God. Our steps are ordered by the Lord. I If our Lord elected us, our steps are ordered of the Lord. If Christ redeemed us, our steps are ordered of the Lord. And if his spirit has regenerated us, our steps are ordered of the Lord.

Never forget that. Never forget that, because we lose sight of the amazing sovereignty that our God truly has, being seated on his throne as the successful redeemer of his people. And we start worrying about things in this life. Scripture, it's clear, heaven and earth shall pass away, but my word shall not pass away. And what is his word? Well, it's the Lord Jesus Christ, first of all, but he also gave us his written word, which is, I have loved thee with an everlasting love.

Therefore, with loving kindness have I drawn thee. That means nothing can separate us from the love of God. It's been ordered. It's been ordered before time. No wonder he said in Psalm 119 verse 133, order my steps in thy word and let not any iniquity have dominion over me. Our dependency is in God's keeping us, keeping us. Order my steps in thy word, Lord. Order me. Lord, cause it to be so. Cause me to seek your face. David said the same thing in another place. He said, I would not have sought the Lord's face unless the Lord had said to me, seek ye my face. Seek ye my face.

Lord, cause us to hear those words. Order that to be so. Our dependency is in God's election, his redemption, his regeneration, and him keeping us, looking to him alone. We look to him alone as all of our righteousness, wisdom, sanctification, and redemption. That's how he's ordered it to be. He's ordered us new creatures in Christ. He ordered that. All things have been ordered. The Lord makes his people have confidence, not in self, but in him alone, him being the one that ordered it, him being the one that performed it, him being the one that ordained it. We can rest in that. We can rest in that.

Jeremiah 10 says this, oh Lord, I know that the way of man is not in himself. It is not in man that walketh to direct his steps. It is not in man that walketh to direct himself. Why? The Lord, go back to our text. Verse 24, man's goings are of the Lord, that's why. Man's goings, it's not of man that walketh to direct his steps. No, it's man's goings or his steps or his way, they're of the Lord. They're of the Lord by his grace, by his purpose.

What rest and comfort to know that I am not the captain of this ship. I am not. Matter of fact, this ship that you and I are on doesn't even have a rudder, doesn't even have a steering wheel, because the captain of the ship is God, just like the ark. You know, that's something interesting that you never will see in the scripture. If you go look at all that they give us, all the Lord gave us on the ark, there's no steering wheel that was ever mentioned in the ark. Why?

God was the captain, and God's the captain right now. He's not going to relinquish that position. He's sovereign. He's God. So next time our ship's not going the way we think it should, just remember who the captain of the ship is. He's not going to steer us wrong.

Do you remember he said, I must needs go through Samaria. The moment that we need him, Daniel prayed for 21 days before the Lord came to him. And finally, when the angel of the Lord appeared to Daniel, he said, I've come for your words. He said, from the very first time you prayed, I heard you 21 days, but yet the Lord tarried to cause Daniel to continue praying. Well, that Samaritan woman didn't know that she even had a need till the Lord came to her.

The point I'm making is, is whenever we cry out unto the Lord, no matter what it is, remember that everything has been ordered. And it's right on time. The Lord's the only being that's ever existed that could be three days late and be right on time. Whenever he goes to Lazarus's tomb, it was three days past the time when Martha and Mary wanted him there. He said, Lord, if you'd have been here, our brother wouldn't have died. He said, your brother live again. She said, I know he lived in the resurrection. He said, I am the resurrection and the life. He that believeth in me shall never die.

Three days late and right on time. What about the disciples? One time they were on a boat, the ship was being tossed about in a storm, and the Lord's asleep. I love that. He's napping. And they said, Lord, carest thou not that we're gonna perish? Think about that statement. Isn't that us? Sometimes we look and say, Lord, have you left me to myself completely? You know what he said? O ye of little faith, wherefore did thou doubt?

And he says three words, peace, be still. He was the cause of the storm. He ordered it. He ordered the storm. And no matter how hard the storm may be, remember that his work is finished. His work is finished, and I mean every part of it. Every part of it. He is the storm, and he is the master of the storm. The winds and the waves, they still remember his voice. And the winds and waves of our lives that we have, that we have issues that we face, whatever way below our way, it's ordered of the Lord.

All things work together for good. To them that love God, to them are thee called according to his purpose. All things work together for good. Our good and his glory. All things are ordered of the Lord and they will come to pass according to his will. All for his glory. Let's pray. Heavenly Father, thank you for ordering all things and making them certain. because of the counsel where it came from, yours. Calls us to rest in you and bless these words to our understanding in Christ's name, amen.
