The sermon titled "Songs Of Deliverance," delivered by Gabe Stalnaker, focuses on the theological theme of Christ as the believer's hiding place and source of deliverance, drawing from Psalm 32:7. The preacher emphasizes that God preserves His people from trouble, akin to the shelter provided by Christ. Stalnaker illustrates this through Scripture, including Exodus 33, where God's presence promises rest, and parallels it with New Testament affirmations from 1 Peter 1 about being kept by God's power. The practical significance of this message is rooted in the assurance of God's sovereign grace and mercy, reinforcing the comfort and security believers find in their relationship with Christ and the eternal preservation He provides.

Key Quotes

“Thou art my hiding place. Thou shalt preserve me from trouble. Thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance.”

“He said, I'm going to hide you. Where? In Christ. I'm going to hide you in Christ in the cliff of the rock. That rock is Christ and that rock is all of our hope.”

“As long as we're in the hiding place, we're going to be preserved. As long as we're in the hiding place, we're gonna be preserved.”

“God's people are encompassed by Christ. They're encompassed by the Lord Jesus Christ. They are encompassed by the host of Christ, the protection and safety of Christ.”

What does the Bible say about God being our hiding place?

Psalm 32:7 describes God as our hiding place, preserving us from trouble and surrounding us with songs of deliverance.

In Psalm 32:7, David writes, 'Thou art my hiding place; thou shalt preserve me from trouble.' This illustrates the profound comfort and safety found in God, who is our refuge from the storms of life and judgment. Specifically, this hiding place is realized in Christ, who offers salvation, rest, and security. In the same way that Moses was hidden in the cleft of the rock as God's glory passed by, believers find their ultimate safety 'in Christ, by Christ, with Christ.'

Furthermore, as we delve deeper into the concept of God as our hiding place, it emphasizes that through Christ's work on the cross, we are shielded from the eternal consequences of sin. His sacrifice means when God looks upon us, He sees the righteousness of Christ, thus preserving us forever from the impending judgment against sin. God’s presence offers us not only protection but the joy of being surrounded by His love and grace, which results in songs of deliverance from our grateful hearts.
How do we know that God preserves us forever?

Psalm 37:28 states, 'They are preserved forever,' affirming the eternal security of God's saints.

The assurance of being preserved forever comes from several scriptures, most notably Psalm 37:28, which articulates, 'For the Lord loveth judgment and forsaketh not his saints; they are preserved forever.' This verse assures us of God's unwavering commitment to His people, emphasizing His justice and mercy. We are not preserved by our own strength or faithfulness but by the sovereign power of God who ensures our eternal security.

In addition, 1 Peter 1:5 reinforces this truth by saying believers are 'kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation.' This underscores that it is God's power, not human effort, that secures our salvation permanently. Jude 1 further adds that we are 'preserved in Jesus Christ,' confirming that our preservation is intrinsically linked to Christ Himself. Thus, our confidence in eternal security is rooted in the unchangeable character of God and His promises that extend beyond this life.
Why is the concept of songs of deliverance important for Christians?

Songs of deliverance reflect the joy and gratitude of believers for God's mercy and salvation through Christ.

Songs of deliverance are significant because they capture the essence of a believer's response to God's redemptive work. In Psalm 32:7, the promise that God will compass us about with songs of deliverance illustrates the joy that comes from knowing we are safe in Him. This concept reflects a deep-seated gratitude and acknowledgment of God's grace, which rescues us from spiritual bondage and despair.

Throughout scripture, music is presented as a powerful means of worship and expression of faith. It gives voice to our salvation story and inspires others to recognize God's sovereignty and mercy. As Christians, singing songs of deliverance serves as a reminder of our identity in Christ—redeemed and preserved. It also cultivates a communal atmosphere of praise, where we can encourage one another in faith, proclaiming the glorious gospel. Thus, singing becomes not just an act of personal devotion but a vital part of our collective worship that echoes the beauty of God's salvation.

Psalm 32. One verse of scripture in this psalm caught my attention and made me want to be here tonight, and it's verse seven. Psalm 32, verse seven. It says, thou art my hiding place. Thou shalt preserve me from trouble. Thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance. That sounds pretty wonderful, doesn't it? David said thou, thou, thou. What he's saying is you, you, you. That is the gospel. That is the gospel. That is hope, that is comfort, that is safety, that is rest, that is salvation. Christ, Christ, Christ.

Lord, you, verse seven says, thou art my hiding place. Thou shalt preserve me from trouble. Thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance. David said, you will hide me, you will preserve me, and you will compass me. Where? How? In Christ, by Christ, with Christ. in Christ, by Christ, with Christ. Turn with me, if you would, to Exodus 33. We know this portion of scripture so well, but it's so comforting every time we see it and hear it again. Exodus 33.

Look with me at verse nine, it says, and it came to pass as Moses entered into the tabernacle, the cloudy pillar descended and stood at the door of the tabernacle, and the Lord talked with Moses. And all the people saw the cloudy pillar stand at the tabernacle door. And all the people rose up and worshiped every man in his tent door. And the Lord spake unto Moses face to face as a man speaketh unto his friend. Verse 14, and the Lord said, my presence shall go with thee and I will give thee rest. And Moses said unto him, if thy presence go not with me, carry us not up hence. If you're not gonna go with us, Lord, please don't send us there. Verse 17.

And the Lord said unto Moses, I will do this thing also that thou hast spoken, for thou hast found grace in my sight, and I know thee by name. And Moses said, I beseech thee, show me thy glory. And the Lord said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the Lord before thee, and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious. This is his glory, his sovereignty, his sovereignty. He said, I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy. Sovereign grace, sovereign mercy.

And he said, thou canst not see my face, for there shall no man see me and live. And the Lord said, behold, there is a place by me, and thou shalt stand upon a rock, and it shall come to pass, while my glory passeth by, that I will put thee in a cliff of the rock. and will cover thee with my hand while I pass by." He said, I'm going to hide you. I'm going to hide you. He said, I'm a sovereign God and I do what I want with whom I want. And he said, no man can see me and live. Sinful man cannot look at a God this holy and live. So he said, I'm going to hide you.

Where? In Christ. I'm going to hide you in Christ in the cliff of the rock. That rock is Christ and that rock is all of our hope. That rock is all of our hope. That broken place in the rock. Where God hid all of his people from fiery judgment. That's all our hope. That's all of it. What are we confessing in this? Here's what we're confessing. That's all our hope. That's all our hope. That's it.

Turn over to Psalm 27 with me. Psalm 27. Verse four, it says, one thing have I desired of the Lord that will I seek after, that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life to behold the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in his temple. For in the time of trouble, he shall hide me. In his pavilion, in the secret of his tabernacle, shall he hide me, he shall set me up. upon a rock. The time of trouble, that's when he hid us in the secret of his tabernacle.

That's his body. That is himself. You know, Peter said in 2 Peter chapter 1, he said, I know that I must shortly put off this, my tabernacle. He was talking about his own body, saying it's going to lay down in death. My soul is going to go back to the God who gave it. And this body is going to lay down. And he was talking about his body in saying his tabernacle. Well, our Lord walked this earth in a tabernacle. A body was prepared for him. And that was the case so that he could hide his people in the secret of his tabernacle.

While he endured their time of trouble, You know, people think, we think we have trouble all the time. Oh, we have trouble. There's only one real trouble. And it's the day of trouble. It's the time of trouble. And outside of Christ, that trouble's coming. But in Christ, that trouble already came. And while our Lord Jesus Christ endured the trouble of the judgment of God on the cross of Calvary, he was hiding his people inside himself.

David said in faith, I know he will come and do this for me. We now say in faith, I know he did come and do this for us. He is our hiding place, hiding in thee, hiding in thee, thou blessed rock of ages, I am hiding in thee. Look with me back at Psalm 32. Verse seven says, thou art my hiding place, thou shalt preserve me from trouble. As long as we're in the hiding place, we're going to be preserved. As long as we're in the hiding place, we're gonna be preserved.

Somebody will say, well, for how long? You know, people don't really do this anymore, but back in the day, in the home, people used to make preserves. A lot of people used to preserve things. Well, how long will the preserves be preserved? How long will they stay good? God's people are preserved.

For how long? Well, let's find out. Turn with me over to Psalm 37. Psalm 37 verse 28, it says, For the Lord loveth judgment and forsaketh not his saints. They are preserved forever. Forever. How long are they preserved? Forever. Well, how are they preserved?

Well, let's find out. Turn with me over to 1 Peter 1. The word preserved means kept. 1 Peter 1 verse 3, it says, Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope, by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you who are kept by the power of God. through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. How are God's people preserved? By the power of God. They are preserved forever by the power of God. Well, where are they preserved? Where are they being kept?

Well, let's find out. Turn over to Jude. Jude, just before Revelation, one chapter, Jude 1. Verse 1, it says, Jude, the servant of Jesus Christ and brother of James. to them that are sanctified by God the Father and preserved in Jesus Christ and called.

Mercy unto you and peace and love be multiplied. David said, thou art my hiding place. Lord, you are my hiding place. Thou will preserve me forever by your power in Christ. In the Lord Jesus Christ. Now go with me back to Psalm 32. Verse seven says, thou art my hiding place. Thou shalt preserve me from trouble. Thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance. Now this is the part that really grabbed my attention. This is what made me want to bring a message from this verse.

He said, you are going to surround me with songs You're going to surround me with singing, with cries of joy. We know that the Lord surrounds his people. We know that the Lord himself surrounds his people. God surrounds his people with Christ. And I want to show you two things.

First, go with me to Psalm 125. Psalm 125, verse one, it says, they that trust in the Lord shall be as Mount Zion, which cannot be removed, but abideth forever. As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the Lord is round about his people from henceforth, even forever. That verse has always been such a comfort to me.

We know that God, the Trinity, encompasses his people with Christ. God's people are surrounded with Christ. We also know that the Lord our God encompasses his people with all the defense of heaven, the armies of heaven, all of the spiritual warfare of heaven.

Turn with me over to 2 Kings 6. 2nd Kings 6, the king of Syria right here wanted Elisha, that's God's prophet, the king of Syria wanted Elisha dead. And in verse 13, it says that this king of Syria said, go and spy where he is that I may send and fetch him. And it was told him saying, behold, he is in Dothan. Therefore sent he thither horses and chariots and a great host, and they came by night and compassed the city about. And when the servant of the man of God was risen early and gone forth, behold, and host compassed the city both with horses and chariots, And his servant said unto him, Alas, my master, how shall we do?

This young man had gone out of the house and seen all of this enemy surrounding the city, and he ran back into Elisha, and he said, What are we going to do? Verse 16, And Elisha answered, Fear not, for they that be with us are more than they that be with him. And Elisha prayed and said, Lord, I pray thee, open his eyes that he may see. And the Lord opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw, and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha. I've always envisioned that as the top of the mountain or the ridge of the mountain. That's not what it says. It says the mountain. It could be you didn't even see the rock. You talk about safety.

God's people are encompassed by Christ. They're encompassed by the Lord Jesus Christ. They are encompassed by the host of Christ, the protection and safety of Christ. And because of that, God's people are encompassed with the joyful praise, the joyful songs of praise and thanksgiving to him. That's what God's people are surrounded by, praise and thanks to him.

Go with me back to Psalm 32. All of the Psalms are songs. There are songs all throughout the scripture. But I also just got to thinking about some of the songs that have come from the thankful hearts of God's people. This was the first one that came to my mind.

Verse seven says, thou art my hiding place. What caught my attention was that our Lord was gonna surround his people with songs of deliverance. And the first line is, thou art my hiding place. You're my hiding place. Now just listen to this song of deliverance. Hail sovereign love that first began the scheme to rescue fallen man. Hail matchless, free, eternal grace that gave my soul a hiding place.

Against the God who rules the sky, I fought with hand uplifted high, despised the mention of His grace, too proud to seek a hiding place. Enwrapped in thick Egyptian night and fond of darkness more than light, madly I ran the sinful race, secure, I thought, without a hiding place.

But thus the eternal counsel ran. Almighty love, arrest that man. I felt the arrows of distress. How does God arrest his people by saying, you are a sinner against me? Oh, I felt the arrows of distress and found I had no hiding place. Indignant justice stood in view.

To Sinai's fiery mount I flew. That's the law. But justice cried with frowning face, this mountain is no hiding place. Ere long, before long, a heavenly voice I heard. This is the preaching of the gospel. In mercy's angel form appeared, who led me on with gentle pace to Jesus Christ, my hiding place. On him almighty vengeance fell that must have sunk a world to hell. He bore it for a chosen race and thus became their hiding place. Should storms of sevenfold vengeance roll and shake this earth from pole to pole, no flaming bolt could daunt my face. for Jesus Christ is my hiding place. A few more rolling suns at most shall land me safe on heaven's coast. There I shall sing the song of grace to Jesus Christ, my hiding place. We'll take that one and we'll just stick it right there. Just listen to this.

Up Calvary's mountain, one dreadful morn, walked Christ my Savior, weary and worn. Facing for sinners, death on the cross, that he might save them from endless loss. Father, forgive them, thus did he pray, even while his lifeblood flowed fast away. Praying for sinners while in such woe, no one but the Lord Jesus ever loved so. Oh, how I love him, savior and friend. How can my praises ever find end? Through years unnumbered on heaven's shore, my tongue shall praise him forevermore.

Blessed redeemer, precious redeemer, Seems now I see him on Calvary's tree, wounded and bleeding, for sinners pleading, who were blind and unheeding, dying for me. I was the blind, unheeding one. He was dying for me. I'm gonna stick that one right there.

I will sing of my Redeemer. and his wondrous love to me. On the cruel cross he suffered from the curse to set me free. Sing, oh, sing of my Redeemer. With his blood he purchased me. On the cross he sealed my pardon, paid the debt, and made me free. I will tell the wondrous story how my lost estate to save, in his boundless love and mercy, he the ransom freely gave. I will praise my dear Redeemer, his triumphant power I'll tell, how the victory he giveth over sin and death and hell. I will sing of my Redeemer and his heavenly love to me. He from death to life hath brought me, son of God, with him to be." Made me to be a son of God with him. That one goes up here.

Free from the law, oh happy condition. Jesus hath bled and there is remission. Cursed by the law and bruised by the fall. Grace hath redeemed us once for all. Now are we free, there's no condemnation. Jesus provides a perfect salvation. Come unto me, oh hear his sweet call. Come and he saves us once for all. Children of God, O glorious calling. For all of eternity, that's what we're going to be called. Children of God. Surely His grace will keep us from falling.

Passing from death to life at His call. Blessed salvation once for all. Once for all, O sinner, receive it. Once for all, oh brother, believe it. Cling to the cross. The burden will fall. Christ hath redeemed us once for all. We have time. One more. That one goes back here, by the way. Redeemed how I love to proclaim it. You know why I preach the gospel? Because I love it. Redeemed by the blood of the lamb. Redeemed through his infinite mercy, his child and forever I am. Redeemed and so happy in the Lord Jesus.

No language my rapture can tell. That means I can't put it into words. I know that the light of His presence with me doth continually dwell. I think of my blessed Redeemer, I think of Him all the day long. I sing, for I cannot be silent. His love is the theme of my song. I know I shall see in his beauty the king in whose law I delight, who lovingly guardeth my footsteps and giveth me songs in the night, redeemed, redeemed, redeemed by the blood of the Lamb, redeemed, redeemed, his child and forever I am.

That one goes right there. Verse seven, thou art my hiding place. Thou shalt preserve me from trouble. Thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance. And that last word, selah, means just dwell on that for a minute. Just stop and dwell on that for a minute. Just dwell on what the Lord Jesus Christ did for us. Dwell on his grace. Dwell on his mercy. Dwell on our thankfulness.

In our praise, I pray the Lord will enable us to do that. That's what we're going to dwell on as we enter into this ordinance. Lily Parks has expressed her desire to confess our Lord and believers baptism and. She's going to do that. She's expressed her desire to confess her hiding place. And I'd like to confess mine, too, while we're at it. My deliverer, my preserver, that's what we're confessing. All right, Lily, you can go on back.
