Turn with me to Acts chapter 2. Acts chapter 2. Just a few points from this passage of scripture this evening. Acts 2, look beginning with verse 22. Acts 2, verse 22. First thing we see here is the message of Christ crucified. Look at verse 22, he says, ye men of Israel, Peter's speaking here, he said, you men of Israel, hear these words, Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you, approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs which God did by him in the midst of you as ye yourselves also know. This message of Christ crucified, it declares that Jesus Christ, we read this right here, that Jesus Christ was sent of God. Look at verse 23. Him being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God. God sent his son into this world. Read on here, he says, you have taken and by wicked hands have crucified and slain. This message declares that we killed God's son.

My sins, my transgressions were laid on him. Why was he wounded? What does scripture say? It says this, He was wounded for my transgressions. He was bruised. Why was he bruised? For my iniquities. The chastisement of my peace. Where was that found? It was found upon him. Found upon the Lord Jesus Christ. Listen to these words from a hymn written by John Newton.

He said, I saw one hanging on a tree in agony and blood. He fixed his loving eyes on me as near his cross I stood. Sure, never to my last breath can I forget that look. It seemed to charge me with his death, though not a word he spoke. My conscience felt and owned the guilt and plunged me in despair. I saw my sins as blood had spilled and helped to nail him there. A second look he gave me which said, I freely you forgive. This blood is for your ransom paid. I died. that you might live. Peter says, you have taken, you have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain. All our iniquities on him were laid. Jesus Christ, this gospel declares that Jesus Christ is sin of God. We're guilty. We're guilty of his blood.

It also declares that God raised him from the dead. Follow along with me in verse 24. Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death, because it was not possible that he should be holding of it. God raised him from the dead, declaring his victory over sin, declaring that the father is well pleased with the sacrifice of his son. And listen, not only did he raise him from the dead, God exalted him. Skip down to verse 29 of our text. He says, men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David. He's both dead and buried and his sepulcher is with us unto this day.

Therefore, being a prophet and knowing that God hath sworn with an oath to him that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne. He seen this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption. This Jesus, This same Jesus, who you crucified, God hath raised up, whereof we are all witnesses.

And therefore, where is he? Therefore being by the right hand of God, exalted. And having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear. for David's not ascended into heavens. But he saith to himself, the Lord said unto my Lord, sit thou on my right hand until I make thy foes thy footstool.

Therefore, let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God hath made this same Jesus whom you crucified, whom you nailed to the cross, this same Jesus both Lord and Christ. He was raised up and exalted. In his death, his burial, his resurrection, this all declares his exaltation. The Lord Jesus Christ, crucified, buried, risen, and exalted at the right hand of God. That's clear, isn't it? In just a few words of Scripture, I'm so thankful for the simplicity of God's Word. What else do we see in this passage of Scripture? We see conviction. Look at verse 37.

When they heard this, when these men heard this, they were pricked in their heart. God's Word will not, it's not going to return unto Him void, but it's going to accomplish the purpose whereunto He sent it. Peter just, he spoke just a few words here. And when these men heard it, it says they were pricked in the heart. Their hearts were laid wide open. They saw themselves as guilty. They saw themselves as having committed this crime. They were guilty of the charge that had been laid on them here. A prick to the hand or to the elbow or to the knee or any other part of the body is not a wound. It's not a mortal wound. But a prick to the heart, a cutting of the heart, that's a mortal wound, isn't it? When they heard that, they knew. They knew something. Something had been revealed to them of their condition.

And this is the third point here. They cried out, what shall we do? Look with me at verse 37. They said to Peter and to the rest of the apostles, men and brethren, what shall we do? You know, before they mocked, And now they are at a complete loss. What shall we do? We desire to know something of peace and pardon. We're guilty of his blood. And look at the reply, here's the fourth thing. Peter and the apostles, they responded and they said this, repent. Repent and be baptized. That word repent, it means, it's a change.

A change of mind. A change of manners. A change of masters. Turning from sin to salvation. Turning from this world to Almighty God. Turning from myself to Him, to Christ. Looking to Him, resting in Him. To turn, it means, listen, to take sides with God against myself. If I see anything of His righteousness, His holiness, and anything of my sin, I can understand something as to why sin must be punished. To see my guilt, to see my shame.

Repent, and then he says, be baptized. Be baptized. Our Lord, our Lord was baptized. Over in Matthew 3, verse 16, it says this, that Jesus, when he was baptized, he went up straightway out of the water. Baptism is immersion. It's not throwing a little water on someone. It's not sprinkling. It's immersion. Our Lord came up out of the water.

And lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him. In Acts chapter 8, Philip had preached the gospel to that eunuch. Remember that that eunuch was reading from Isaiah 53. And we read this, that Philip began at the same scripture and he preached unto him Christ. He preached unto him the Lord Jesus. He preached the gospel to him. Turn to Acts chapter 8. Look at verse 36 of Acts chapter 8.

And as they went on their way, They came unto a certain water, and the eunuch said, see, here is water. What doth hinder me to be baptized? Philip's response, if thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. One requirement, do you believe? And that eunuch's response, he answered and he said, I believe Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

And he commanded the chariot to stand still. And they went down, both. You see this? Into the water. He didn't run down there and grab a bucket and bring up and just spray. They went down into the water. Both Philip and the eunuch and he baptized him. And when they were come up out of the water, the spirit of the Lord caught away Philip and the eunuch saw him no more. And he went on his way rejoicing.

In Acts, we also read of the Philippian jailer. Remember that, the foundation of that prison had been shaken. That jailer's foundation had been shaken. The jailer was prepared to take his own life. And Paul and Silas, they said to him, do thyself no harm. And he called for a light and sprang in and came trembling. That jailer, he came trembling, and he fell down before Paul and Silas, and he brought them out. And he said, he must have known his condition. He must have known something of his trouble, of his sin, of his guilt. And he said, sirs, what must I do to be saved? What was the reply?

Believe, believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved in thy house. And they spake unto him the word of the Lord and to all that were in his house. And he took them that same hour of the night and he washed their stripes and he was baptized. He was baptized. He and all his straightway. And when he brought them into his house, he set meat before them. And what was his response? He rejoiced. He rejoiced, believing God with all his house.

God's method of grace that we see this over and over in Scripture. The gospel is preached, and men believed, and those that believed, are baptized. They publicly confess Him. We see that pattern in the New Testament. And baptism, that's who it's for. It's for believers. Baptism is for Ishii. 1 Peter 3, 21.

The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us, not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but it's the answer of a good conscience toward God by the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Believers follow their Lord in baptism because he commands it. Our Lord commands it. He said in Matthew 28, 19, go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. In baptism, the believer identifies with Christ. He or she identifies with his people. Confessing our faith in him, our hope, our confidence, our rest, our salvation is in Christ and it's all in Christ. Him and him alone.

And we renounce everything else. Our former religion, the darkness of this world, our idolatry, What shall we do? We'll turn back to Acts chapter two. Acts chapter two. Peter said unto them, repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Again, in baptism, the believer, we confess our faith in Him. We confess His death. Acts chapter 2 verse 23, it says this, Him being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, you have taken and by wicked hands have crucified and slain. He died. He had to die. Without the shedding of blood, there is no remission. His death, we confess his burial.

Paul writing in 1 Corinthians, he said, I delivered unto you first of all that which I have received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures and that he was buried. He was put in the ground and buried and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures.

His resurrection. We just read about that, but we see that in Matthew 16, 21. It says, from that time forth began Jesus to show unto his disciples how that he must go unto Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and the chief priests and the scribes and be killed and be raised again the third day.

And then his exaltation. His resurrection declares Him to be the Son of God with power. His exaltation declares Him to be who He is. He is Lord, Lord of all. God hath made this same Jesus whom you crucified to be both Lord and Christ. The gospel exalts Him. Jesus Christ is Lord. Every knee is going to bow, every tongue is going to confess that, that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father. God hath delivered all things, all authority, all judgment, all revelation, all things into His hands.

Romans 10 verse 9, we read, if thou shalt confess with thy mouth Jesus to be, what? Lord. Thou shalt be saved. Romans 10, whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord. Men aren't calling on the name of the Lord. They're calling on someone named Jesus. Jesus Christ is Lord. He is God in human flesh. We don't declare a pitiful, helpless Savior waiting to see what will happen.

We preach a risen, exalted Lord who has all power over all flesh and can give eternal life to as many as the Father has given Him. We can have a good hope of salvation because my exalted Lord is able to save. He's able to keep. He's able to raise my vile body. An exalted Lord with all authority in heaven and earth. An exalted Lord that has entered and taken possession of that heavenly kingdom. And he'll have his people to be there with him and to behold his glory.

The word of God. The word of God which was sent unto the children of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ, he is Lord of all. The gospel preached. Many who heard believed. And those who believed were baptized. And the Lord continues to do, isn't that encouraging? The Lord continues to do that in our day. He sends forth his messengers. He gives them a message from his word. A message for his sheep.

And when his people hear it. And the only reason we hear it is because he gives us ears to hear it. But when we hear that word, we believe. How is it that we believe? He gives us faith to believe and gives his people a desire to be identified with him. When they heard this, when they heard these things, they were pricked in their heart and they said unto Peter and the rest of the apostles, men and brethren, what shall we do?

And Peter said unto them, repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost for this promise. Who's it for? What's he say? Unto you. This promise is unto you and to your children and to all that are far off, even as many as the Lord shall call. In many other words, did he testify and exhort saying, save yourselves from this untoward generation.

And then they that gladly received his word. Some will have nothing to do with this word. Some hate this word, but aren't we thankful that some hear and some believe. And listen, they that gladly received his word, they were baptized, believing the gospel, receiving his word.

What a miracle, truly what a miracle of God's sovereign grace. He that saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace given us in Christ Jesus before the world began. A miracle, truly a miracle of his grace. And those that believe, those that have been brought to a saving knowledge and faith in him are not ashamed to submit to him, to be identified with him. identified with his people, identified with his gospel. Let me close with this scripture. I'll just read it to you. It's a familiar passage. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved. But he that believeth not shall be damned. All right, well, we're gonna have a baptismal service tonight. And Isaac's going to come and lead us in a song as we prepare for that.
