Over the past few weeks, we've
been thinking about God and the three persons of the Godhead,
God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. And
perhaps you're wondering, how do we know about God? And how
do we know about the Godhead? How do we know about the Lord
Jesus Christ? Well, the answer to that question
is, because God has told us in his word. The Bible is God's
word. It's God's book, and it is true
from beginning to end. Actually, the Bible is a collection
of books, and it's a collection that's divided into two parts. There's the Old Testament part
of the Bible, and that contains 39 books, and the New Testament
part, which contains 27 books, 66 in all. These books were written by different
people over a long period of time. Yet the message of the
books is the same. It's the message of the Lord
Jesus Christ. It is the promise of God to give
grace and peace to sinners like you and me. And it tells us of
the way of salvation for God's people in this world. And because
the Bible is God's book, because it is the word of God to his
people, it is important that we read it and we learn from
it. Sometimes people say it's hard
to understand the Bible. No, it's not. I'm going to give
you four little helps that will show us how to understand the
Bible. These could be like our inns,
our inns to understand God's word. If we learn these truths
about the Word of God, we will both understand and discover
that the Bible is the most important and the most precious book in
the world. And the first in I want to give
you with respect to the Bible is simply this, that the Bible
is inspired. The men who wrote the Bible were
all moved of God to write as they did. They weren't like robots
simply writing down what God spoke, but they were led and
directed by the Holy Spirit so that the very words that God
wanted to give to his people were written down by these men
for us to read today. And not only is the Bible inspired,
but here's another in for us, it is infallible. That means
that there is nothing false, there is nothing wrong, there
is nothing untrue in the Word of God. There is nothing incorrect. It is to be trusted and it is
to be believed in everything it tells us. And even if we don't
understand it all, nevertheless, we are to trust it and believe
it to be true. Moses, and David, and Luke, and
Paul, and Peter, and John. These men might be the writers,
but it is God who is speaking to us through his word, and God
always tells the truth. God never tells lies. The Bible is inspired, and it
is infallible. and it is also instructive. Here's another little in for
us. The Word of God teaches us about
God and it teaches us about the Lord Jesus Christ and it teaches
us about God's will for salvation. When we want to learn about God,
Where do we go? We go to his word. If we want
to learn about sin and salvation, if we want to learn about our
spirit, we should ask, what does the Bible say? And we should
learn from it. And the final little in I want
to leave with you is that the word of God is invaluable. It is precious. Do you know that
the Lord Jesus Christ was always speaking about the Bible? He
referred to the Bible, he quoted the Bible, and he said, the scripture
cannot be broken. The word of God is always true. When he was tried, when he taught,
When his enemies attacked him, even when he was on the cross,
the Lord Jesus Christ quoted God's word. And if he did so,
we should learn to do the same. So precious will this book prove
for us. And finally, I want to mention
one more little thing. The Bible was written largely
in the language of the Hebrews and the Greeks, but God has allowed
and enabled translators to write these old languages in words
that we can understand today. And we are very blessed for this. The translation that we have
and the translation that we use is the authorised or the King
James Version of the Bible. There are many other versions,
but we believe this is the finest version and we believe that it
will not be surpassed. There are three reasons for this. Firstly, it was translated from
the Greek and the Hebrew by the finest scholars of the age. And these men studied in order
to bring us the translation of the Bible that we have. And these
experts not only knew the languages, but they also understood the
theology and the doctrines, the meaning of the words of the Bible. And thirdly, God has blessed
this Bible to his church and to his people over hundreds and
hundreds of years. Psalm 119 and verse 130 says,
The entrance of thy words giveth light, it giveth understanding
unto the simple. And my prayer this morning for
both you and for me is that the Lord will cause his word, which
is truth, to enter into our hearts and our understanding, that we
may learn of him to the eternal good of our souls. Amen.
