What does the Bible say about faith?

The Bible defines faith as the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen (Hebrews 11:1).

Faith is pivotal within Christian theology, as it represents both hope and assurance in God's promises. Hebrews 11:1 states, 'Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.' This passage encapsulates the essence of faith as not merely wishful thinking, but as a confident trust in God's word that materializes through the believer’s relationship with Christ. Faith allows believers to perceive spiritual truths that are beyond the physical sight, forming the foundation of their hope in eternal life and righteousness through Christ alone.

By examining instances throughout Scripture, we see heroes of the faith, from Abel to Abraham, who exemplified this confidence in God’s providential care. Paul emphasizes that this faith is what justifies the believer, as seen in the righteousness that is imputed to those who believe (Romans 4:3). Hence, faith is not only a belief but a profound acknowledgment of the reality of God’s kingdom and His promises that believers cling to steadfastly, even in the face of uncertainty.
How do we know that salvation is through faith alone?

The Scriptures affirm that salvation is by grace through faith, not of works (Ephesians 2:8-9).

Salvation by faith is a cornerstone of Reformed theology, grounded in biblical doctrine. Ephesians 2:8-9 distinctly states, 'For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.' This underscores that salvation is an unearned gift from God, emphasizing His sovereign grace. Contrary to any notion of self-earned merit through works, Scripture consistently points to faith as the means through which individuals receive the righteousness of Christ.

Moreover, the doctrine of justification by faith alone (sola fide) is demonstrated throughout the New Testament. For instance, in Romans 3:28, Paul writes, 'Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith apart from the deeds of the law.' This reflects a clear demarcation between human effort and divine grace, affirming that faith is essential for reception of God’s saving grace. In accepting this doctrine, believers find assurance in Christ's completed work rather than their own abilities.
Why is understanding God's sovereignty important for Christians?

Understanding God's sovereignty provides Christians with comfort and assurance in God's ultimate control over all events (Romans 8:28).

The sovereignty of God assures believers that He is in control of all aspects of life, which is profoundly comforting, especially in times of suffering or uncertainty. Romans 8:28 states, 'And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.' This verse encapsulates the promise that God orchestrates all circumstances for the good of His people. Recognizing God's sovereign hand over creation and events instills confidence that nothing occurs outside of His divine plan.

Furthermore, acknowledging God's sovereignty shapes how Christians view trials and tribulations in their lives. By understanding that God is both sovereign and good, believers can rest in the assurance that struggles serve a greater purpose in God's redemptive narrative. The historic Reformed understanding maintains that God's ways, while often mysterious, are ultimately designed for the good of His elect, reinforcing a trust that God’s will will be fulfilled according to His perfect wisdom and righteousness.

Alright, if you will take your
Bibles now and turn with me back to Matthew, Matthew chapter 9. The story that we have before
us here in Matthew chapter 9 is about the raising of the daughter
of Jairus, who was a ruler of the synagogue. get into all the explanations
like the old writers do about what that meant that he was a
ruler and some of them counted rulers were kind of maintenance
men and some of them were there to judge who was worthy and not
worthy to stand and teach and so on. There was a lot of different
offices about the synagogue and all of them were called rulers.
But I want to look at several different things in this text
this morning, but mainly, and this is what caught my eye, I was actually
surprised when I researched this out how little the old writers
had to say about this. This is a definite miracle of
the Lord Jesus Christ, the raising of one who was dead, And yet
they had very little to say about it. Most of them concentrated
on the woman with the issue of blood. Perhaps because the picture
there, and we'll look at that next week, was a better typifying
or a better picture to them than this raising of this young lady. And the other accounts of this
miracle, if you want to read them this afternoon, are found.
I read you one here in Mark chapter 5. The other one is in Luke chapter
8. And you can read all of these
and you'll find additional information about this. If you've read this
account in Matthew chapter 9, you'll see there that the only
thing he says about his daughter is that even now she's dead.
He accounted her when he left her. According to the other two
accounts, she wasn't dead yet. She was dying. But he accounted
in his heart that by now she was dead. So some time had lapsed. He counted her as dead when he
sought the Lord. But I want to talk to you this
morning about faith and the perception of faith. Faith has a perception.
It enters into these things, John. It doesn't just read these
things and have little to say about them, little to do with
them, and move on to something bigger and better. Faith has
a perception. It looks into the Word of God.
It understands what it sees. And it looks at it in wonder.
And it looks at it, not only understanding, but it looks at
it and believes and counts that thing done, counts that thing
as a sure thing. Abraham was strong in faith,
it says, giving glory to God. What did he believe? That he
that promised was able to perform that which he promised. He counted
it a done deal. A done deal. And the definition
of faith, I want to talk about this for just a minute, is found
in Hebrews chapter 1 verse 1. You're all familiar with it,
I'll just read it for you. It says, Faith is the substance
of things hoped for. and the evidence of things not
seen. Now, what's that mean? What's
that mean? That's easy to say. What does
it mean? Well, if I tell you this morning
that I've got $300 in my bank account, and you say, well, I
don't think he's got $300 in his bank account. I can produce
a bank book and I can show you in the bank book the evidence.
So here it is, here's the proof, here's the substance of it right
here. It says right here, this is a document given to me from
the bank that proves I've got $500 or $300 or whatever it is
I tell you I've got. It'll show you right here, this
is what I've got. I tell you this morning that I have an automobile,
the evidence of it is out in the parking lot, it's sitting
out there. You can walk out and see it. You see what I'm saying?
But when we're talking about spiritual things, Paul said the
evidence of it and the substance of it is faith. You can't see
it with these eyes. No, you can't. Our Lord said,
don't you get in here and start rooting up tares from the wheat. You stay out of it. Because you
can't see. You can't see the difference.
You'll get in there and root up the wheat. Or you'll get in
there and you'll let the weed stay thinking that this is the
weed. These things are invisible to
these eyes. These things of God. He said
to those around Him, they were all questioning. They went out
there excited. I mean, come on now, here's a
man that can raise the dead. Here's a man that can... He's
cleansed the leper. He's cast the demons out of legion.
This man, they couldn't even bind him with chains. And our
Lord, there he sat, right before him in his right mind, clothed. This wild man that they grew
up knowing. They looked at him and wondered.
Nobody had ever... Who has spoken like... Even the
winds and the waves obeyed his voice. They knew he was somebody.
But they couldn't perceive what he was. They couldn't understand
why he came. They couldn't see the glory about
him. They just saw these things. He said, I'll tell you why you're
here. Because you was up there on the
mountain with me and I took them loaves and fishes and fed you
and you got full. That's why you're here. You won't
get full again. You won't take advantage of these
things. That's what religion does. It wants to It wants with
no understanding to take advantage of the promises of God. That's
what it wants to do. Just say, well, they're mine,
and take them. Don't work that way. Faith perceives. Faith looks into the Word of
God, and God gives it the ability to see and to hear. It hears. He told them, he said, the kingdom
of God cometh without observation. You can't see it. He told Nicodemus,
he said, this spirit by which you're born, it blows like the
wind. You can feel it, but you can't
tell where it comes from or where it's going next. All you can
do is just see the evidence. You can just see, and faith is
evidence. That's what I just read to you.
It's the substance. Now listen to these scriptures.
He said Jesus Christ, Paul said, is the image of the invisible
God. He said no man has seen God at
any time save he that's in the bosom of the Father. He hath
declared Him. We don't know anything at all
about God except what we see and hear in the person of Christ.
That's what I know about God. Listen to this. Paul writes to
Timothy and he says, Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible."
Isn't that what he said? Invisible. Now turn with me over
to Hebrews 11. Faith is the substance of the
things we hope for. What do we hope for? I hope one day to stand in the
presence of God with the likeness of Christ. What do I have for
substance? I've got faith. I've got faith. I hope to have a righteousness
acceptable of God. Where is the evidence? Faith. I don't have anything else. I can't point to my walk. I can't
point to an experience. I can't point back to a time
and a place. Faith. That's the evidence. And
I can apply that to redemption. I can apply that to salvation
overall. I can apply that to whatever
the Scriptures talk about. These things that we hope for,
and that's what it is. It's a hope. The substance of it, John, is
faith. Faith. Listen to this in Hebrews 11.
This is kind of the roll call of faith here in Hebrews 11.
It demonstrates what he sets forth there in Hebrews 1.1. Faith
is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not
seen. Then he illustrates it. He starts
way back yonder with Abel. And he talks to you about Enoch,
and he talks to you about Noah, and he comes right on down the
line. And here he's talking about Moses, over here in verse 24. Hebrews 11, 24, by faith. Moses, when he was come to years,
refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter, choosing
rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy
the pleasures of sin for a season. Esteeming the reproach of Christ,
greater riches than the treasures of Egypt, for he had respect
unto the recompense of the reward. By faith he forsook Egypt, not
fearing the wrath of the king, for he endured as seeing him
who is invisible." He saw him that he can't see, that's what
he's saying. And I'm telling you, that's where
it's at. You see Him that you can't see. And you see Him in the Word of
God. And that's the evidence. Faith lives in, is born out of,
and walks in the spiritual realm. It's not a natural thing. Just
forget about getting over there with your neighbor and arguing
with him about the doctrines of grace. You're not going to
accomplish anything except maybe you're going to make another
proselyte who don't know Christ. And he'll hide in the doctrines.
That's exactly what will happen. He'll hide in the doctrines.
Well, I believe in the sovereignty of God. I believe in election.
I believe in predestination. I believe in all them things.
None of them things will save you. Christ will save you. And in Christ you understand
election. In Christ you understand predestination. I'm predestinated to be conformed
to the image of Christ. How am I going to understand
that if I don't see Him? You see what I'm saying? It lives in, it's born of, and
it walks in a spiritual realm. Faith sees things and hears things
that these eyes and these ears can't see and hear. I was raised
in religion. This Bible sat before me from
the time I was old enough to read until I was old enough to
leave my house, leave my father's house. I looked in and never
one time saw any of these things. Faith sees. Faith sees. I don't even need an old writer
now. I can sit down in the Word of God and He'll just open it
up to me. I see it. I see it on every page. See it
never promise. See it never type. Faith perceives the things written
by promise and by prophecy and by picture in the Word of God
concerning the person and the work of the Lord Jesus Christ. I read to you last week this
passage out of 1 Corinthians 2. It says, Now we have received
not the spirit of this world, but the Spirit which is of God,
that we might know, know the things that are freely given
to us of God. Faith perceives. Faith knows. It understands. It has a basis. It's not, I hope, I hope, I hope.
Well, you know, we're having a birthday party tomorrow. I
hope it don't rain. You've got no basis for that. That's just
a wish. You see what I'm saying? That's just a wish. And that's
what religion does. Well, I hope I'm going to heaven. You going to rest your soul on
that? Isn't that a bit different from saying, I hope it don't
rain tomorrow? There's a basis for this hope. And this basis
is found in the Word of God. Faith cometh by hearing, hearing
by the Word of God. See what I'm saying? And these things, Paul said,
these things, we also speak, not in the words which man's
wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth, comparing
spiritual things with spiritual. But the natural man receiveth
not the things of the Spirit of God, their foolishness unto
him, neither can he know them, because they are spiritually
understood." They hear what we preach. You set forth for them
a picture like the Ark of Noah. which is a picture of Christ.
All God's elect, all that believe, they're put into the ark. God
pours out His wrath on the ark, but they're preserved in the
ark. It's a picture of Christ. They see that. They understand
what you're talking about in a natural way. But they don't enter into it.
They don't receive it. He said, they receiveth not.
Why don't they receive it? Because he says it's foolishness
to them. Huh? Foolishness. They won't receive them because
they perceive them to be foolishness. Think about this. I get up here
and preach to you a righteousness imputed to you by faith. A perfect
righteousness. No flaws. Paul said in that day
he'll present you in the very presence and glory of God faultless. Ain't that what he said? Spotless
before the presence of His glory. Without blemish, without spot. Unreprovable. There's nothing
in you to reprove. It's absolute perfection. Well,
how am I going to do that? Because it's a righteousness
charged to you. It's a righteousness given you
by faith, imputed to you. Abraham believed God and it was
imputed to him for righteousness. Ain't that what it says? This
world says that's foolishness. You've got to keep the Sabbath
day, you've got to pay tithes, you've got to dress a certain
way, wear your hair a certain way, you can't go here, you can't
do this, you can't say that, you can't do... You see what
I'm saying? It's foolishness! Foolishness! I'm telling you, the Word of
God sets forth Christ. He's the end of the law for righteousness
to everyone that believes. Not what he is to everybody else,
but he's the end of the law to believers. And you can take that
end any which way you want to. It's the goal of the law. It's
the end or fulfillment of the law. Faith looks to Christ alone
and it sees in him a righteousness that is the very righteousness
of God. And in faith, believing, God
imputes that righteousness to him freely by his grace. And
he accounts the very righteous obedience of Christ as that man's
own works. I read that scripture over there
in Revelation 20 and just tremble. It said, and the books were opened. The dead were raised. Stood before
Him and the books were opened. And another book was opened,
which is the book of life. And they were judged out of the
books, John, according to their works. Ain't that what it says? You say, I ain't got any works.
You do if you have Christ. He's going to look on your works
and see that righteous obedience of Christ, and He's going to
say, well done by a good and faithful servant. What have you
ever done in your life that God Almighty could look at you and
say, well done? Huh? Nothing. But you can in Christ. You can in Christ. And I'm convinced
seeing Him and understanding what God has written about Him,
how that righteousness can be accepted, can't you? I don't see any flaws in His obedience.
I don't see any error in His life. I don't see any sin about
Him. I see Him tempted and tested like as we are, yet without sin. It's a perfect righteousness. That's foolishness to this world.
Foolishness. All those Jews wasn't going to
have it. This man, he's just a man. We grew up with him. His daddy's a carpenter. We know
his brothers and his sisters. What are you talking about? It's foolishness to them. Foolishness. And I don't want to recap on
everything that I've said over the past several weeks, but he
set before them a man, a new and living way. New wine in a
new bottle. A new garment. He sat before
them. He sat before them the perfections of the character
of God in this man. God was come down into the flesh. The Word was made flesh and dwelt
among us. The very character of God in
him. And we saw him and we saw his glory, John said. We saw
the glory of God. We saw him as the way. The way. He said, I am the way.
I am the truth. You want to know the truth? It's
in Him. He is the truth. Martha, do you believe in the
resurrection? Yeah, I believe one day we're all going to be
raised. He said, I am the resurrection. You want to know about the resurrection?
Here it is. Here it is. He sat before them in simple
illustrations and pictures, the glory. of His coming and the
value of His person and the immensity of His power. He just said to
a man of the palsy, Thy sins be forgiven thee, in a word. And he walked away healed. Here's Matthew, an old tax collector,
sitting there at the bench. Got it made. Got it made. I mean, he had his living, he
had his connections, he had everything in the world to hold him to that
spot. Our Lord didn't diddle around.
He just come by and said, Matthew, follow me. That man got up and
followed him. I can't get men to walk across
the street. Now listen to me. By the preaching of the gospel
and the power of God approving him, confirming him among the
people by miracles and signs and wonders, which he did right
in their midst, the gospel he preached came in power. Now there's
a difference between the gospel when we go argue it with somebody
And when the Holy Spirit takes that same gospel and sends it
out in power, there's a difference. There's a difference. And there
was a man named Jairus whose daughter lay dying in a bed,
all hope gone, all of his efforts exhausted. And there she was,
going to die any minute. Whatever this man heard, caused
him to leave the bed. Which one of you here this morning,
and I'm including myself, I have a daughter 12 years old that
I love and she's dying in a bed, could walk away and go to where
this man is to hear what he's got to say? Huh? You see, there's two miracles
here. One was the raising of the daughter, but there's another
one in the man himself. And I believe this is the greater
miracle. In this man himself, he was able to see everything
around him, including himself, dead. It's all dead. The whole outfit's dead. And
I read to you the account over there in Mark, And they said,
if you got here while she was still living, there'd be some
hope, but don't trouble her any further, she's dead. You mean
there's something you could do to assist her? That's what religion believes,
ain't it? See, these folks are all religious.
They was out there, they was all religious. Now, in their
mind, They believed that man to be a great man, and if he
could have come while there was still a little spark of life,
a little something in that girl to fan, he could do it. Mary and Martha waited on Jesus.
He stalled three days before he came to them in order that
his glory might be seen. He stalled out. He didn't come
to Lazarus' tomb as soon as they sent for him while he was still
alive before he went into the tomb. He waited until he was
dead three days. And by now, he's stinking. The
corruption's already started. Rigor mortis had already set
in. This man was stiff as a board. And they said, if you'd been
here, are you going to assist him some way, are you? What are
you going to add? Now, this man come to know by
experience. Now, he knew it in his head,
but he didn't know it by experience yet. And here lay his daughter
dying, and he come to the realization here in this gospel that the
whole outfit is dead. I'm dead. She's dead. Everybody
around me is dead. This multitude is dead. There
ain't but one man in this world among men who has life, and it's
in that man. And so he left that daughter
and went to that man. And you see, that's what we do.
We thank our relatives. If I can just get them in here,
if I can just, maybe I can say something to them, maybe I can
pump them up some way, maybe I can argue them into a profession
of faith, go to Him. Go to Him. There's righteousness
in Him. There's hope in Him. There's
life in Him. He's the way. He'll settle all
the arguments if you can get them to Him. He's the only one
that can help me. Only one. I was talking to Winston
about his boys and I know he grieves in his heart about his
boys the way I do over my daughters and my son. Take them to him. I'm telling you. Lay them down
at his feet. He's the only one that can do
them any good. This man heard that. The multitude
didn't hear it. Let me read this to you over
here in Matthew 9, 18. Listen to this. While he spake
these things, right while he was preaching, while he spake
these things unto them, unto whom? Unto the multitude. Unto the religious. Unto the
whole outfit that was gathered, that throng that pressed him,
that hindered him. While he spake these things,
there came a certain ruler. One of them heard him. Huh? One of them heard him. And he
heard him in power. And he heard him in conviction.
And he heard him in faith. And it says he came. Now, here's
his daughter dying. She's dying. And most folks believe
in the providence of God, I think, to a point. But here his daughter
was dying. He said he came and he worshipped
him. Boy, you can't do that apart
from faith. You try to muster up worship apart from faith.
You can't do it. You've got to have some drums
and guitars and some rhythm and something going on to work that
up. You've got to have an experience
of some kind. You've got to have a march around
the church. You've got to have activity. You've got to have
something going on to drum it up. You don't have to drum up
faith. Faith is alive. It perceives. It rejoices. It glories in what
it sees in Christ. And here's what I want you to
look at. While he spake these things unto them, the multitude,
this man came to him. It says, Behold, there came to him a certain ruler
and worshipped him. How did he worship him? He said,
My daughter right now is even dead. She's dead. But come and
lay thy hand upon her, And she'll live. Now there's just a multitude
of things in here, and I'm not going to use my notes anymore.
I'm lost in my notes. This young woman laid there on
the bed, 12 years old, dead in a hammer, and he knew it. He
was convinced that the whole outfit was dead. And he came
and bowed himself down at the feet of Christ, and it said,
Strongly begged him, fell down his feet. He didn't have any
other kind of police. And I'll tell you why we make them police.
I'm going to tell you that. Because you've never been convinced
that you're dead. That's why. See, if you're not
dead, if you still... See, the multitude had a little
argument there as long as she was alive. They felt like, well,
but now she's dead. It's all gone. That's what we do. While we're
alive, We find some hope. We find some excuses. I ain't
always done the right thing, but I'm not bad as he is. You reckon that pulls any weight
with God? That might do something for me if you're my neighbor
and you ain't as bad as the other neighbor. I might give you a
little credit. But I ain't the one you got to stand before.
You got to stand before God. It's with God with whom we have
to do, and that's what faith's all about. See, faith perceives and understands
it. It looks into the Word of God.
That young king in Israel, he was just a young boy. He didn't know anything, and
the scrolls had been lost, and they found them, and they brought
them to him, and he read them, and he fell down in sackcloth
and ashes, and he said, we're in trouble. Why? Because faith
perceived the condition that he was in. Isaiah, he was woe and everything
in chapter 5. Woe to the drunkards and the
adulterers and everybody. They're all woe. Everything he
did was a woe. You read it. Isaiah chapter 5. And Isaiah chapter 6, he saw
the Lord. He said, woe is me. I'm undone. I'm a man of unclean lips and
I dwell among a people. The whole outfit's dead. That's
what he's saying. The whole outfit's unclean. That
leper came to him and fell down at his feet and he said, Lord,
if you will, you can make me clean. And you see, folks, they're
not convinced of their sin. As long as you can still see
righteousness, you can find excuses and make excuses. But over there
in Romans chapter 3, he said, we know this. After he got done
with this big long list, and I've been quoting it to you now
for weeks, there's none righteous, no not one. There's none that
understandeth. There's none that seeketh after
God. We're all gone out of the way. We are together become unprofitable. There is no fear of God before
our eyes. And he said, now we know. Now
we know. How did you know? Because he
just read these things. He was convinced of these things.
He said, and we know that what thing soever the law saith, it
saith to them that are under the law, why? Why? Why does it say it? That every
mouth be stopped. That's why. And all the world
become guilty before God. And I tell you this, if God ever
makes you guilty, if He ever brings you down to that place
where you have nothing, where you are nothing, where you can
see nothing, you can do nothing, You're dead. And you look around
and everybody around you, the preachers and the religions of
all sorts and denominations and this whole outfit is dead. When
you can see that, then you can begin to see the goodness of
God in Christ. That's all you can see. I was
talking to somebody about election one time and they said, I wouldn't
worship a Christ like that. You would if you were dead. Oh
yes, you would. You'd see that election is the
goodness of God. You'd see that predestination
is the goodness of God. You'd see that eternal covenant
as the goodness of God. David's dying words, the sweet
psalmist of Israel was, although it be not so with my house, yet
hath he made with me an everlasting covenant, ordered in all things
and sure, and this is all my salvation and all my desire,
whether he makes it to grow or not. Why? Because he could see the goodness
of God. And my friend, the goodness of God is what leads you to repentance. It's not law. The only thing
you can find in the law is guilt. Guilt. Guilt. Cursed is everyone
who continueth not in all things written in the book of the law
to do them. Is that where your hope is in what you do? You're
cursed. You're cursed. Paul said in Galatians,
Christ will profit you nothing. You so much as be circumcised,
Christ will profit you nothing. And you just go on. You go on
walking the aisles and whatever else it is that you find that
in, the righteousness of God, the goodness of God is in Christ.
It's all in Him. All in Him. This man saw that. And he didn't come down there
making excuses. He didn't come down there charging
God with foolishness because his daughter was dying in a bed.
He came down and worshipped Him. Whether he healed his daughter
or whether he didn't, he worshipped Him because he saw in Him nothing
but the goodness of God. God didn't have to become a man
to judge us, to condemn us. That's not where you find those
things. You see in Him the goodness of God. And it leads you to repentance. He come down there knowing who
He was and what He came to do. He come down there in faith and
He said, if you will, you can just go lay your hand on her. Dead or not, she'll rise, she'll
live. I asked my wife yesterday, I
said, You reckon we really believe
that? Do we really believe that? Do I really believe that my son
and my daughters are dead? You believe that? You believe
that old white-haired grandma of yours is dead? That mother
you cherish is dead? We believe that. I wonder. I wonder. But I tell you this,
when you're convinced of it, you only find one man with life.
And that's where you go. I don't care what the need is.
I don't care how desperate it is or how common it is. You go to Him. You go to Him. I don't care where the ignorance
is. You see Him to be your wisdom. God hath made Him to be unto
us wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, and redemption. It's all in Him.
All in Him. And we'll quit reading these
little fairy tales out of the Scriptures and we'll start seeing
the power of God. We'll start seeing the glory
of the Gospel. And we'll come to Him. This man
was convinced he can come down there with all him kind. He just
come down there saying, if you will, I know that you can. if
you will. And I'll tell you this, he believed
that he would or he wouldn't have been there. I'll tell you what, when you
get convinced of sin, when the Holy Spirit of God convinces
you of sin, when you just lay there in your guilt with nothing
to say, you've got no reply, all you can see is death in yourself. It's just unstoppable. It's like
you've just falling into a black hole. And you just keep going
down Winston and you're grabbing and there ain't nothing there.
And after a while you just quit grabbing. And you just sit there
silent before God. Guilty! Guilty! And then he says, let me tell
you about my son. You won't have no problem looking.
Preacher won't have to stand up here like I am this morning
and beseech you to believe on Him or command you to believe
on Him. You'll just believe on Him. Yeah, you will. Yeah, you
will. We won't argue about where we're
going. I ain't going down there. I'm going to go over here because
my folks all went over here. You won't argue about that anymore.
Not if you see Him. Not if you see Him. This man,
if I don't get anything else across to you this morning, this
man knew his helplessness. He couldn't do anything for his
daughter, and his daughter was dead and couldn't do anything
for herself, and that whole outfit around him was just a hindrance.
I'll show you that next week with this woman with the issue
of blood. They just thronged on him and pressed on him. All
these things about him and the folks who really desired to get
to him, they were just a hindrance to him. They were in the way.
That palsied man, they'd climb up on the roof, take the towels
out and lower him down to get him into the presence of Christ.
They were a hindrance to him, not a help. Not a help. But he saw in him all he needed. He saw all the ability and all
the value and all the promises of God, and he saw God Himself
in that man. in that man. How do you see them
things, John? God showed him up to it, didn't
He? Now over there in Romans 10, it said, Whosoever shall
call upon the name of the Lord be saved. But there's a problem.
How are you going to call on Him in whom you have not believed? Huh? You believe in the Sovereign
Christ because that's how this book depicts Him. He's absolute
sovereign. Everything God had, He put into
His hands. Is that what He said? As thou hast given me power over
all flesh, that I should give eternal life to as many as thou
hast given me. I've got power. All power is
given unto Him. Paul says it over and over in
the book of Colossians. All power, everything. He's the
head over the church. He's the head over the whole
outfit. He rules providence. He rules salvation. It's all
in His hands to give or withhold. You believe in a sovereign Christ? You believe that in Him and in
Him alone is the authority to say, by sins be forgiven thee. And they're gone. You believe
that? You believe in that covenant
surety that God appointed before the world was? Dictated all the
terms and said, here they are. You keep them. You keep them. And you keep them for this people
that I've given you. You believe that? You believe
in the surety of God in Christ? You believe those things? How
are you going to call on Him then? in whom you have not believed. And how are you going to believe
in Him of whom you have not heard? If God doesn't cross your path
with a man that tells you the truth, how are you going to believe
it? You ain't. I'm just telling you. You ain't. You go your way, He'll
go His. Just like the multitude, He said,
you stay out here. Why? They laughed Him to scorn. Now you stay out here. You come
with Me. I'm going to show you my glory. I don't want to be on the outside
looking in. I want to be on the inside. On the inside. where you can
see His glory. And that's where faith takes
you. Paul said it takes you right in past the cursed place, past
the forbidden place, past the veil, he said. This new and living
way takes you beyond the veil where man was forbidden to go.
Only the high priest could go in there. It takes you right
in there, right into the very Shekinah glory of God, right
into His presence, John, where we can boldly come, just walk
right in. Walk right in by faith. God created in us a faith that
looks only to Christ, looks only to Him, finds in Him all it needs,
all it desires. As you have received Christ Jesus,
the Lord Paul said, so walk you in Him. You're complete in Him. I don't need the philosophies
of this world. I don't need their rudimentary principles. I don't
need all this kind of... All I need is Him. All I need
is Him.
