Would you turn with me to the
14th chapter of the book of John? I want to begin reading in verse 21
and read down through verse 24. He that hath my commandments,
and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me. And he that loveth
me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will
manifest myself to him." saith unto him, not Iscariot,
not the one who betrayed him, but the other Judas, Lord, how is it that thou wilt
manifest thyself unto us and not unto the world? Jesus answered and said unto
him, if a man love me, He will keep my words, and my
Father will love him, and we will come unto him and make our
abode with him. He that loveth me not keepeth
not my sayings, and the word which you hear is not mine, but
the fathers which sent me." Judas, not Iscariot, asks this
question, How is it that you will manifest yourself to us
and not to the world? Now this question came in response
to what the Lord said at the end of verse 21 where he said,
I will manifest myself to him. And Judah says, how? I've entitled this message, How
Christ Manifests Himself. And this is something that I
desperately want. I want the Lord Jesus Christ
to manifest Himself, to make Himself known, to me. And I want him to manifest himself
to you. And it's my prayer that the Lord
will manifest himself this morning. That's what we want, isn't it?
We want to hear from him. Now the first thing that I would
notice is this fact that Christ does not manifest himself to
the world. Judas understood this. He said,
how is it? that you will manifest yourself to us and not to the
world. Look in John chapter 15 verses
18 and 19. He says to his disciples, if
the world hate you, you know that it hated me before it hated
you. If you were of the world, the world would love his own.
But because you're not of the world, but I have chosen you
out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. Look in John
chapter 7, verse 7. The Lord says in verse 7 of John
chapter 7, the world cannot hate you, but me it hateth The world
hates the Lord Jesus Christ. But me it hateth, because I testify
of it, that the works thereof are evil. Look in John 17 once
again. John chapter 17, verse 6. I have manifested thy name, and
here's the manifestation of the Lord Jesus Christ. I have manifested
thy name unto the men which thou gavest me, out of the world. Thine they were, and thou gavest
them me, and they have kept thy word." Look in verse 9. He says,
I pray for them. This is talking about every one
of God's people. This is not just talking about
the 12 or the 11. Judas is already left. This is
talking about every one of God's people who Christ prayed for.
Now, before I go on, if Christ prays for you, You're in good shape, aren't
you? If Christ mentions your name before the Father, does
anything else need to be said? Now, let's read verse 9. He says,
I pray for them. I pray not for the world, but
for them which thou hast given me, for they are thine. Now, I don't know how many different
ways there are to take that, but the Lord says, I pray only for the
elect, only for those the Father gave me. Look in verse 14 of
John chapter 17. I have given them thy word, and
the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even
as I am not of the world. What? That means something doesn't
it? I pray not that thou shouldst
take them out of the world, but that thou shouldst keep them
from evil. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the
world. Go back to John chapter 8. Remember his question. How is
it that you'll manifest yourself to us and not to the world? Now look here in verse 43. John
chapter 8. The Lord says, why do you not
understand my speech? Even because you, what's that
next word? Cannot. You lack the ability. You do not have the wherewithal. You are unable. That's what the
word means. You don't have the power. You
don't have what it takes to hear my word. Listen, if you can hear
the word of Christ, God's done something for you. What an amazing
miracle of grace. Let's go on reading. Verse 44, he says to these people,
you're of your father, the devil. And the lusts of your father,
you will do. I heard a politician recently
say, just in the last couple of weeks, we're all God's children.
No, we're not. No, we're not. Our Lord says
to this group of people, you're of your father, the devil. And the lust of your father,
you will do. He was a murderer from the beginning,
and abode not in the truth, because there's no truth in him. When
he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own, for he is a liar,
and the father of it. And because I tell you the truth,
you believe me not. Now, which of you convinces me
of sin? And if I say the truth, why do you not believe me? He
that's of God heareth God's words. You, therefore, hear them not,
because you are not of God. You see, to be able to hear the
Word of God, you have to be of God. Now, the world does not
have the ability to understand, believe, or keep His words because
He has not manifested Himself to them. He doesn't manifest
Himself to the world, therefore they don't get it. If I'm a believer, I get it because
of His revelation to me, His revelation. of himself. You know, we're totally dependent
upon revelation, aren't we? We can't figure this thing out.
This is not something we get through diligent study, although
we ought to study diligently. But the only way I can know him
and know his gospel is if he makes himself known to me. Revelation. That's what Paul
was talking about in that scripture I opened this service with. When
it pleased God who separated me from my mother's womb and
called me by His grace to reveal His Son in me. Now, you can complain about this
and say it's not fair that He reveals Himself to some and not
to others and that He doesn't reveal Himself to the world.
And He may pass you by. as an act of his irreprehensible
justice. Or, you can say, Lord, be pleased
to manifest yourself to me. Do you know he's never said no
to that request? He never has. Now notice the way Christ answers
this question back to our text in John chapter 14. Verse 22, Judas saith unto him,
not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself
unto us? Remember, salvation is the revelation
of a person. He manifests himself. It's not
just getting somebody's doctrine straightened out to where they
believe the right and correct things. It's the manifestation
of a person. He manifests himself. How is
it that you'll manifest yourself to us? And not unto the world. And look how our Lord answers
that. Verse 23, Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love
me, he will keep my words. You see, if Christ manifests
himself to a man, you know what that man will do? He'll love
him. He'll love Him as He is. He'll
love Him as He reveals Himself in His Word. I love Christ as
He is. I wouldn't want Him to be changed
in any way. If it were my power to change
Him, I wouldn't do it. You see, I love Him as He is.
I love Him as He is in His holiness, in His justice, in His sovereignty,
in His power, in His glory. I love Him as He is. If a man
loved me, here's how it will manifest itself. Now remember,
if he manifests himself to you, you're going to love him. And
here is what is going to be evidenced when a man loves him. Let's go
on reading. In verse 23, Jesus answered and said unto him, If
a man loved me, he will keep my words. Now this is what somebody
does who loves the Lord Jesus Christ. They will keep his words. Now, what is meant? by the words
of Christ. He'll keep my words. He'll guard
over them. He'll preserve them. He'll embrace
them. He'll hold on to them. What is
meant by the words of Christ? Well, first of all, the Bible.
All Scripture is given by inspiration of God. And it's profitable. The Bible is God's holy word. Now, I can't prove that to anybody
here. I don't feel the need to. It's obvious to me that this
book is the book of God. And I got to begin right here.
And I keep over his words. Every word in this book is precious. It's his words. What is meant
by the words of Christ? Well, the gospel message. The
gospel message. The Lord said, if you continue
in my word, My word, you're my disciples indeed. Now, turn back
to John chapter 6 for just a moment. Now, in this sermon, in John
chapter 6, I know I've referred to it several times in the last
month or so, there's some separation that's going on. That's very
important for us to understand that. In this message, our Lord
preached, separated some people from Him to where they didn't
want to have anything to do with Him anymore. Look in verse 7. 5 of John chapter 6, and he said,
Therefore said I unto you that no man can come to me. He lacks
the ability to come to me, except it were given unto him of my
Father from that time many of his disciples went back. And
they claimed to be his disciples. As a matter of fact, they tried
to make him king. But now all of a sudden they go back and
they leave him and walk no more with him. Now remember he said,
if you continue in my word, then are you my disciples indeed.
Now what happened that these disciples left him? Look in verse
59. These things said he, his word,
These things said he in the synagogue, as he taught in Capernaum, many,
therefore, of his disciples, when they had heard this, they
heard what he said, they said, this is a hard saying, this is
a harsh saying, this is an austere saying, this is not a saying
we like, we don't like what's being said. Who can be expected
to listen to such teaching as this? That's what they're saying.
This is a harsh saying. This is unsympathetic toward
humanity. We don't like these words. This
is a harsh saying. Who can hear it? Well, what do
you say? Look back in verse 29 of John
chapter 6. Jesus answered and said unto
them, This is the work of God, that you believe on Him whom
He has sent. Faith alone. Look in verse 37. All that the Father giveth Me
shall come to Me. Divine election. Verse 39. And this is the Father's
will which is sent Me, that of all which He hath given Me I
should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last
day." There's Christ's particular atonement for his elect. He said,
I won't lose one person the Father gave me. Everybody I die for,
they're going to be saved. And there's no mistaking of this
language. Look in verse 44. He said, no man can come to me.
No man has the ability to come to me except the Father which
has sent me draw him and I'll raise him up at the last day.
There's total depravity. No man has the ability. If God
leads you to yourself, if God leads me to myself, I won't come
to Christ and I'll die and go to hell. I'm totally dependent
upon him to draw me. Look in verse 45. It's written
in the prophets, they shall all be taught of God. Every man therefore
that hath heard and hath learned of the Father comes to me as
irresistible grace. I like that word irresistible
and invincible. His grace is irresistible. He said everybody
that's learned of God, everybody that's heard from him, every
one of them are going to come to me. Look in verses 57 and 58. As the Living Father has sent
me, and I live by the Father, so he that eateth me, even he
shall live by me. This is the bread which came
down from heaven, not as your fathers did eat man and are dead,
but he that eateth this bread shall live forever. This is the
perseverance and the preservation of God's people. They'll live
forever eating on the bread of life. Now, these are the words that
they were offended by. Look back in verse 61. of John chapter 6, when Jesus
knew it Himself that His disciples murmured at it. He said unto
them, Does this offend you? Does it offend you? Do these
words offend you? I love what He says in verse
62. He says, What, and if you should see the Son of Man as
send up where He was before? Now what He means when He says
that, is He says if you're offended now, you're really going to be
offended. when you see who I really am
and that I'm the Lord of Lords and the King of Kings and I have
all glory. You're offended now? You'll really
be offended then. Verse 63, it's the spirit that
quickens, that flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak
unto you that you find to be harsh, inhumane sayings, they're
spirit, absolutely spiritual, the words of God, and they are
life. But there's some of you that
believe not, for Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that
believed not and who should betray Him. And He said, Therefore said
I unto you that no man can come to Me except it were given unto
him of My Father. From that time, many of His disciples went back
and walked no more with Him. Then said Jesus unto the twelve.
Everybody left Him but the twelve. And I can't help but think what
must have been going through their mind. I mean, we're finally
making some progress. and there's some people listening,
and we're having some influence, and now you run them all off.
And I'm wondering what all they were thinking. And they must
have been thinking something negative, because the Lord wouldn't
have asked them this question. You fellas want to leave too?
There's the door. That's what he said. There's
the door. Y'all want to leave too? Verse 68, Then Simon Peter
answered him, To whom shall we go? Thou hast
the words of eternal life, and we believe and are sure that
thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God. His words, if you love Him, you'll
keep His words. All who love the Lord Jesus will
keep His words. Now what does it mean to keep
His words? Back to our text in John chapter 14. Verse 23, Jesus answered and
said unto him, If a man love me, he'll keep my words. That's
the Bible. That's everything he said. That's his gospel. If a man love me, he will keep
my words, and my Father will love him, and we will come to
him and make our abode with him. Now what does it mean to keep
his words? Because I know this. If I don't keep his words, I
won't be saved. This is something I myself must do. I must keep
his words. What's it mean to keep his words?
Well, first of all, to keep His words, you have to hear His words.
You can't keep something you've never heard, can you? You know,
the Lord said, how can they believe in Him in whom they've not heard? It can't be done. You can't hear
or you can't keep what you've never heard. The Lord said, why
do you not understand My speech? Because you cannot hear My word.
John 8, 47 says, He that's of God, heareth God's words. You
therefore hear them not, because you are not of God. Faith cometh
by what? Hearing, and hearing by the Word
of God. So first of all, to keep his
words, or to hear his words. Speak, Lord, thy servant listeneth. Speak. I want to hear the Word
of God. Let every man be swift to what? Hear. Slow to speak. To keep his words is to believe
his words. Faith is believing the word of
God. Turn with me for a moment to
Matthew chapter 8. There's a couple of scriptures I want to look
at to illustrate this. Verse 5. When Jesus was entered into Capernaum,
There came unto him a centurion, beseeching him, Matthew 8, 5,
verse 6, and saying, Lord, my servant lieth at home, sick of
the palsy, grievously tormented. And Jesus saith unto him, I will
come and heal him. The centurion answered and said,
Lord, I am not worthy. that thou shouldst come under
my roof, but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed."
Speak the word only. Now turn to John chapter 4. beginning in verse 46. So Jesus
came again unto Cana of Galilee where he had made the water wine
and there was a certain nobleman whose son was sick at Capernaum. When he heard that Jesus was
come out of Judea into Galilee he went unto him and besought
him that he would come down and heal his son, for he was at the
point of death. Can you imagine the desperation
of this man? Then said Jesus unto him, Except ye see signs
and wonders, ye will not believe. This man's met with a rebuke,
but does it stop him? No. Then nobleman saith unto
him, Sir, come down, ere my child die. Jesus saith unto him, Go
thy way, thy son liveth. Now as soon as the Lord said,
thy son liveth, you know what happened? His son lived. He was cured. Now, this man didn't
have any tangible evidence of it, did he? He couldn't see that
his son... As a matter of fact, he was still
a long way away from his son, but look what it says. Jesus
said unto him, Go thy way, thy son liveth. And the man believed
the word that Jesus had spoken unto him. With no evidence that
his son lived, he believed he lived when Christ said he lived. Now, my dear friends, that's
faith. It's believing the Word of God. Let me give you another
illustration. I'll give you two illustrations. First, I'm going
to give you the illustration of Abraham, the father of the faithful. God said to Abraham, you're going
to have a great multitude of descendants. Abraham had no physical
evidence at all that it would happen. His wife had already
gone through menopause and he was not he was an old man he
was incapable physically of doing this he had no evidence that
it would happen but the word of God God said you're gonna
have a bunch of kids Abraham believed him he believed what
God said Romans chapter 6 verse 11 turn
with me there for a moment I'd like you see this Romans chapter
6. What is it to keep the words
of God? Well, first it's to hear them,
second it's to believe them. Verse 11. Likewise, reckon ye
also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, and alive unto God
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Now here the Bible commands me
to reckon myself, to see myself to be, to believe that I am dead
indeed to sin. Sin has nothing to say to me.
Sin has no rule over me. Sin has no authority over me.
Sin has no power over me. I'm dead to sin. Now, I can't
see that I'm dead to sin. As a matter of fact, as far as
the way I feel, it feels very alive. Very alive, very powerful. I can't see that I'm dead to
sin, but by the grace of God, I believe that I am. I'm perfectly
justified before God. I'm without guilt before God.
I'm sanctified. I'm glorified in the Lord Jesus
Christ. I believe, not because I can see it in me, but because
God... If God says to you, reckon yourselves
to be dead indeed to sin, you know what? You are dead indeed
to sin, and you believe it. I believe by what Christ did
for me. I'm dead to sin. Faith is believing the Word of
God. You see, I've committed all my salvation to Him. Hands off. Hands off. I'm not looking to myself by
the grace of God. I'm not looking to myself. I
really believe that when He said it is finished, my salvation
was accomplished. And I have assurance. I can come
into God's presence He's my father. I'm his son. I can come boldly
for this one reason. Jesus Christ is my salvation. I'm united to Him. I'm dead to
sin and alive unto God through our Lord Jesus Christ. I'm dead
indeed to sin. How do I keep the words of God? I hear them. I believe them.
And to keep His words are not only to hear them, not only to
believe them, but to receive them, to embrace them, to receive
them all as good news. Look in John chapter 17. Now, the Word of Christ, I hear
it, I believe it, and I receive the Word of Christ in this sense.
This is good news to me. to know that Christ is my salvation.
It's not just some grim acknowledgment of the fact. I receive this as
good news, as the gospel. This is glorious. Now look here
in John chapter 17, verse 6. I have manifested thy name unto
the men which thou gavest me out of the world. Thine they
were, and thou gavest them me, and they've kept thy word. Now
they've known all things. Whatsoever thou hast given me
are thee, for I have given unto them the words which thou gavest
me, and they have received them, embraced them, and have known
surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou
didst send me." That means loving his words, loving his way. So that's what it is when you
receive somebody, you embrace them. You know, David put it
this way. He said, I esteem all thy precepts,
in all things to be right, and I hate every false way. You see, you can't love the true
and not hate the false. It's impossible. We receive His
words and embrace them as good news. To keep means to watch
over, to guard, to preserve. Now his words, the Bible, the
gospel message, what was said in John chapter 6, everything
that's said in the Bible, every believer watches over and guards
and preserves these words. They can't bear that any of them
should fall to the ground. You see the truth. Now listen
to me real carefully. The truth is made of many truths that make the one truth. And
if you leave any of them out, if you omit any of them, you
no longer have the truth. For instance, in that passage
in John chapter 6 that we looked at, which part of that message
would it be okay to omit? Which part's more important than
the other? You know, if somebody watches
over the truth and guards the truth and preserves the truth,
they're very much like Solomon, the wisest man to ever live,
the man that God gave such special wisdom to. And you can read the
account of this in 1 Kings chapter 4, where Solomon demonstrated
his wisdom. Here's what happened. There were
two women, and both of them had babies. And they were sleeping
together in the same bed and that night one of the women rolled
over on her baby and smothered it to death. And she woke up
and her baby was dead. And that other woman that was
laying beside her, she took that woman's baby and made it hers
and put it beside her and she took her dead baby and put it
beside that woman. When they woke up, this woman
saw this dead baby, but it wasn't hers. And this woman said, no,
it's the woman who had smothered her baby. She said, no, this
living baby is my baby. The dead baby is yours. You smothered
it. The woman knew better than that. She knew who her child
was, but she was so upset about this. Both of them were upset,
so they said, well, we'll go to Solomon to get this issue settled. And
so they come before Solomon, and one woman says, This living
baby's my baby. The dead baby's hers. And the
one who really had the baby, she said, no, this baby's mine,
and the dead baby's hers. She switched them in the night
and saw them and said, well, we'll get this straightened out.
We'll get this figured out. Somebody bring me a sword. And
they brought a sword out, and he said, we're going to cut the
baby in half, and you can have half, and you can have half.
We'll divide the baby, and everything will be OK. And one woman said,
that sounds fair to me. And another woman was devastated.
Go, let her have the baby. Let her have the baby. Who is
it that said, let her have the baby? That was unwilling for
her baby to be divided and separated. It was the woman who loved her
child. Now, if I'm willing for any part of God's truth to be
divided, this part's important, that part's not, this part's
necessary, that part's not, this part's okay, that part... If
I can handle the truth like that, I prove I have no love for the
truth. That one who loved the truth
would not suffer the truth to be divided or separated. Oh, we believe the Word of God. We can't do without it. How do I keep His words? By preaching
His Word. Paul said to Timothy, Timothy,
preach the Word. Does the Word declare God is
absolutely sovereign? Then preach it. Does the Word
declare that God elected a people? Then preach it. Don't explain
it away. Does the Word declare that Christ
died for the elect and accomplished their salvation? Then preach
it. Does God declare in His Word
that we are to deny ungodliness and worldly lusts and to live
soberly, righteously, and godly in this present world? Does the
Word declare that? Then preach it. Whatever God's
Word says, preach it. You don't need to worry about
whether you can get it all together. Whatever God says, preach it. Preach the
Word. That's how I keep the Word. Preaching
it. Now remember the question of
Judas. How is it you'll manifest yourself? It's not a walk that's
revealed, but the person of Christ. How is it that you'll manifest
yourself to us and not to the world? Well, let's see. Let's
go back to our text in John chapter 14. Verse 23, Jesus answered and
said unto him, If a man love Me, keep my words and my Father
will love him. You find me somebody who keeps
the word of Christ and I find you somebody that the Father
loves. He loves Him. Anybody who sees,
anybody who can say with Peter, Thou hast the words of eternal
life, we believe and are sure that Thou art the Christ, the
Son of the living God. You believe His word, you won't
let it, it's all His word. You can't bear the thought of
any of His words falling to the ground or being divided. You
believe the whole gospel. You can't be saved by a half
gospel, only by a whole gospel. You believe His word. Ask somebody,
the Father, God the Father loves, now look what else it says, verse
23, and my Father will love him and we will come unto him and make our abode with him. My address is 2380 North, no
it's Millbrook Drive now, it used to be North Millbrook, they
changed it, but it's 2380 Millbrook Drive. That's my address. That's my
abode. That's where I live. That's where
I have liberty. That's where I have my house.
I feel comfortable there like no other place. I was sitting
out on my porch last night thinking, I've got it made. I've just got
it made. The Lord's blessed me so much. He's revealed this gospel to
me. And just got, I got it made. I got it made. And I was just
in my house, just so happy. Just think, I've got it made.
I love it when I think I've got it made. I hate it when I start
thinking other stuff, you know? Oh man, I just got so rough.
No, I got it made. Got it made. Got it made in my
house. 2380 Millbrook Drive. That's
a good place to be. That's my boat. The address of the Lord Jesus
Christ the address of God the Father 2380 Millbrook Drive he lives in his people he's the
head and wherever there's a head there's a body and I am with
the Lord Jesus Christ He lives in me. The Father lives in me. Now, this is a great mystery,
but you want to know where you can find God? Where can I find
God? Where can I find the Lord Jesus
Christ? That's what you seek when you seek the Lord. You seek
the Lord, don't you? Do you want to know where you can find God?
You want to know where He is? I can tell you. I can tell you
where you can find Him. First of all, you can find Him
right here. This is the book of God. You
search the Scriptures, in them you think you have eternal life,
but they are they which testify of Me. This, the treasure hid
in a field, the Lord Jesus Christ is in this book. This is the
Word of God. Where can I find God? Psalm 80,
verse 1 says, Give ear, O shepherd of Israel, thou that dwellest
between the cherubims. Shine forth. Well, what's between
the cherubims? The mercy seat. The propitiation of Christ. The blood of Christ. I can tell
you where God is. God is wherever the gospel of
the saving blood of Jesus Christ is preached. That's where He's
at. He dwells between. He dwells.
That's where He lives. He dwells between the cherubim.
Where is He? He's seated at the right hand
of the majesty on high, ruling and reigning. Now, I can tell
you where He is. Wherever it is He reigns, that's
where He is. Wherever he's reigning, that's
precisely where he is. Matthew 18, 20 says where two
or three are gathered together in my name, there I am in the
midst of them. He's wherever his gospel is preached.
You know whenever we meet, Sunday morning, Sunday night, Wednesday
night, every time we meet together to preach the gospel, you know
who's there? the Lord Jesus Christ himself. And I'll tell you what,
I'm going to be where he is. You know, if I don't show up,
if he's there, what am I saying by that? I'm saying that it's
not important for me to be where he's at. Either that or I don't
really believe he's there. But he's promised wherever, every
time his gospel is preached, where two or three are met together
for public worship, There He is in the midst of them. And
I'll tell you what, I'm going to be there where He is. In Psalm 22.3, He says, O thou
that inhabitest the praise of Israel. Where is He? Wherever
there's so much praise in Him. That's where He's at. Wherever
there's praise in Him. Not man, not given man glory,
but Him glory. That's where He's at. Isaiah
57.15 says, Thus saith the High and Lofty One who inhabits eternity. whose name is holy, I dwell in
the high and holy place with him that is of a humble and contrite
spirit." Wherever you see someone who's a sinner, that's what a
humble and contrite spirit is. They're a real sinner needing
his mercy. Remember, he's the friend of
publicans and sinners. That's exactly where he is. And
then the writer to the Hebrews said, let us go to him without
the camp, bearing his reproach. He's without the camp. What's
that mean? He's outside of human religion. He's outside of man's organized
religion. You're not going to find him
there. I guarantee you won't. He's not there. He's without
the camp. And he is with anybody and everybody
who keeps his word. That's his abode. He counts them,
his friends. He sits down with them and sups
with them and eats with them and has fellowship with them.
That's where he's at. He is in every believer. Now is that mysterious or what? I am a God house. Every believer. has God the Lord
dwelling in them. Christ in you, the hope of glory. Now it's interesting when I try
to read a couple of commentaries on this passage of scripture. I'm wrapping this thing up. And
people said, well, he didn't answer the question. When Judah
said, how is it that you'll reveal yourself to us and not to the
world? And they said, well, he didn't
really answer the question. Yeah, he did. It says Jesus answered him. He
answered. Sounds like an answer to me.
How is it that you'll manifest yourself to us and not to the
world? Well, he's manifested himself
to you if you love him. You love him as he is. You love
all his attributes. You love him as he is. If a man
loved me, you'll keep his words. You'll guard over his words.
