Genesis 22:5

What does the Bible say about worship?

The Bible presents worship as an act reserved solely for God, which requires both heart and truth.

Throughout Scripture, worship is depicted as the highest form of reverence and honor given to God alone. In Genesis 22:5, Abraham stated that he and Isaac would go to worship God, indicating that true worship involves obedience and submission to God's will. The Scriptures emphasize that worship is not to be shared with images, other beings, or created things, but is exclusively for the Creator (Exodus 34:14, Deuteronomy 6:13). Additionally, Jesus is portrayed as worthy of worship, affirming His divine nature, as seen in passages like Matthew 2:11 and John 9:38.

Genesis 22:5, Exodus 34:14, Deuteronomy 6:13, Matthew 2:11, John 9:38

How do we know Jesus is worthy of worship?

Jesus is worthy of worship because He is fully God, as affirmed in Scripture.

The New Testament presents Jesus as divine and deserving of worship, highlighting His equality with God and His role in creation. For instance, the wise men worshiped Him as a child in Matthew 2:11, and throughout His ministry, His actions and authority demonstrated His divine nature, resulting in acceptance of worship from others (Matthew 14:33, Luke 24:52). Any worship that denies Christ’s deity is idolatrous, showing that true worship must acknowledge Him as both Lord and God (John 20:28).

Matthew 2:11, John 20:28

Why is worship important for Christians?

Worship is essential for Christians as it expresses love, obedience, and reverence towards God.

Worship plays a critical role in the Christian life by facilitating a relationship with God that is rooted in faith and submission. It is an acknowledgment of God's greatness and an act of devotion that affirms His sovereignty and holiness. Romans 12:1 calls believers to present their bodies as living sacrifices, which is a form of spiritual worship. This involves not only acts of worship within a community but also a lifestyle that consistently seeks to honor and please God in all aspects of life, reflecting His glory and acknowledging His grace.

Romans 12:1

What is true worship according to the Bible?

True worship is characterized by a heart attitude of reverence towards God and adherence to truth.

In the biblical context, true worship goes beyond mere rituals or outward expressions; it demands authenticity of heart and alignment with God's truth. Jesus stated in John 4:24 that worshipers must worship in spirit and truth, indicating that genuine worship involves both emotional sincerity and doctrinal fidelity. This means that worship must reflect an understanding of God's nature and His revelation through Scripture, which shapes how believers approach Him. Obedience and belief are vital components of worship, as seen in Abraham's willingness to obey God, which was counted as worship (Hebrews 11:17).

Genesis chapter 22, you remember
the context. The Lord has spoken to Abraham
and said, Abraham, take your son, your only son Isaac. Brother
Larry, you need to go turn the fan off behind me. The Lord has
spoke to Isaac and it's out on the front, Brother Larry. Yeah,
it's out here. The Lord has spoken to Abraham
and said, take your son and offer him up on one of the mountains
for a burnt offering. And Abraham took all the things
that he needed and went up to the mountain of Riah. And he
got there to the bottom of the mountain. And verse 5 tells us
what he said to his two servants that was with him. And that's
my text this morning, verse 5. He was ready to go up to Mount
Moriah and offer Isaac Fairbairn an offering to the Lord. And
in verse 5, Abraham said unto his two young men, Abide ye here
with the ass, and I and the lad will go yonder and worship and
come again unto you. And my subject this morning is
worship. That's the reason I wanted to
look at this passage. Worship. we will go yonder and
worship." Abraham was ready to offer Isaac for a burnt offering
to the Lord, and he said, we will worship and come again unto
you. Now, if you take a concordance
sometime and look at this verse, or look at this word, worship,
it's mentioned almost 200 times, and maybe even more than that,
if you wanted to look at some other words regarding having
the same definition as worship. But there's
one thing that I noticed as I studied the Scriptures regarding this
concept of worship. The Scriptures never defines
what worship is. That is, you won't go to a single
verse that says, worship is this, or worship is that. You look
in the dictionary, Webster's or one of the others, They'll
define worship as reverence. They'll define it as to love,
to adore, to praise, to bow down to, to kiss. But all these definitions
fall short of what it is to worship, and they fall short of that for
this reason. Worship is reverence. Worship
is to adore. Worship is to praise. Worship
is to kiss. But one of the differences between
that and worship, worship is reserved for one being alone. You and I are commanded to love,
fear to whom fear. We honor one another. But when it comes to the concept
of worship, the whole attitude of worship, The acts of worship
is reserved for one being. Worship is reserved for God only. Now listen to this passage in
Exodus chapter 34 and verse 14. And it's repeated several times
throughout the Holy Scriptures. Thou shalt worship no other God. For the Lord, whose name is Jealous,
is a jealous God. It is written, Thou shalt worship
the Lord thy God, and Him only shalt thou serve. It's reserved
for Him. Now I want to read some passages
to you. I want you to take your Bible
and turn to this first passage. Over in Deuteronomy chapter 4
and verse 14 and 15. The book of Deuteronomy chapter
4. And the Scriptures not only forbids worship, adoration and fear and
love to any but God only, but sometimes it categorizes those
objects that we're not to worship. Now I want you to look here in
Deuteronomy chapter 4 and look what it says about this in verse
15. Deuteronomy chapter 4 and verse
15. Take ye therefore good heed unto
yourselves, for ye saw no manner of similitude on the day that
the Lord spake to you in Horeb. That was the same Mount Sinai
where the law was given. The Lord spoke to you out of
Mount Horeb, out of the midst of the fire, lest you corrupt
yourselves and make you a graven image the similitude of any figure,
the likeness of male or female, the likeness of any beast that
is upon the earth, the likeness of any winged fowl that flyeth
in the air, the likeness of anything that creepeth on the ground,
the likeness of any fish that is in the waters beneath." Now
that covers a lot of things, doesn't it? It covers the males,
the females, the birds that was flying through the air, The beast
of the earth, the creeping things that crawl around on the earth,
are the fishes, are the creatures of the sea. Don't make any image
to worship images. Don't worship image. Don't say
we use them for helps. No, you worship them. It's against
the law of God to worship images. And look in verse 19, he mentions
some more. And lest thou lift up thine eyes
unto heaven, and when thou seest the sun, and the moon, and the
stars, even all the host of heaven, you should be driven to worship
them, and serve them, which the Lord thy God hath divided unto
all nations under the whole heaven. Now you remember Romans chapter
1. when the Apostle Paul is talking about this very worship of idolatry. And he said it like this, Romans
chapter 1, and let me read it to you. When they knew God, they knew
there was a God, they knew that He was the Creator, they glorified
Him not as God, neither were thankful, but they became vain
in their imaginations, and their foolish hearts were darkened,
professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, and they changed
the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like to
corruptible man and birds and four-footed beasts and creeping
things. And here is the judgment that
came upon them for their idolatry. Wherefore God also gave them
up to uncleanness through the lust of their own flesh, to dishonor
their own bodies between them. For they changed the truth of
God into a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather
than the Creator, who is blessed forever." That was the judgment
that God brought upon them. And then in Deuteronomy 8, Titan
19, here is another judgment. It shall be that if thou do at
all forget the Lord thy God, and walk after other gods to
serve them and worship them, I testify you this day, Moses
said, that you shall perish from the earth. So we're not allowed
to worship the creature. We're not allowed to worship
the things that we see, these heavenly bodies. We're not allowed
to make images. We're not allowed to worship
the creature. It's reserved for the Creator
alone. Then in Revelation 22, chapter 22, verse 89, listen
to this. Let me read this. It would take
too long for us to turn over there. When the angel had shown
John many, many things in the book of Revelation, taught John
many things, the Lord sent this angel. And when this angel had
finished teaching John, John said, I fell down to worship
before the feet of the angel, a mighty angel, a wise angel.
And here's what the angel said to him, See thou do it not. Don't you dare bow down to worship
me. For I am your fellow servant,
and of your brethren the prophet, and of them which keep the sayings
of this book. Worship God. Worship God. So angel worship is forbidden.
Worship God. And then in Acts chapter 14,
some of you remember this incident. The Apostle Paul had healed a
man. This man was crippled from his mother's womb. The Apostle
Paul healed him in the name of the Lord. He leaped and was praising
the Lord. And those people there at Lystra,
the citizens came to do sacrifices to him. They brought oxen and
reeds and was ready to worship Paul and Barnabas. And Paul ran
in among them and stopped them. And he said, Brethren, don't
do this. Don't do this. I'm preaching
to you that you should turn from these vanities and worship Him
who made heaven and who made earth. You'll also remember in
Acts chapter 10 where Peter came into Cornelius to preach the
gospel to him. And Cornelius came and fell down
at Peter's feet to worship him. And Peter took him up. and said,
I'm a man. Get on your feet. Don't you bow
down to me. I'm a man just like you are.
Just like you are. And he forbid him to worship
him. And one more place. In Matthew
chapter 4 and verse 8, when the Lord Jesus was tempted forty
days and forty nights, the devil taketh him up into that exceeding
high mountain, and he showed him all the kingdoms of this
world and the glory of them. And the devil said to our master,
he said, all these things I'll give you if you'll fall down
and worship me. And there's where the Lord Jesus
said to him, get thee hence, Satan, for it is written, thou
shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only, and him only shalt
thou serve. So in this matter of worship,
it's reserved for one. Image worship is idolatry. The
worship of birds and beasts and creeping fangs and fangs in the
sea, the worship of planets, the worship of angels, the worship
of men, the worship of the devil is forbidden. Whatever worship,
whatever it is, whatever worship is, it's reserved for one being,
and that's for God alone. Here, O Israel, the Lord our
God is one Lord. and thou shalt worship the Lord
thy God, and Him only shalt thou serve." Now, I think we could
go through the Scriptures and continue to prove that, but I
think that's enough Scriptures to prove that only God is to
be worshipped. Now, with that in mind, I want
you to turn to Matthew's Gospel, chapter 2. Hear, O Israel, the
Lord our God is one Lord, And thou shalt worship the Lord thy
God, and Him only shalt thou serve. Look in Matthew chapter
1. One of the reasons I wanted to look at this word with you
this morning, because in my text in Genesis chapter 22 verse 5,
that's the first time the word is mentioned. The first time
you find the word worship is in my text in Genesis chapter
22 verse 5. We come to the New Testament, and this is the first
time the word is mentioned in the New Testament, the word worship.
And look here who it is pertaining to. Look in Matthew chapter 2
and look in verses 1 and 2. This is the first mention of
it in the New Testament. Now, when Jesus was born in Bethlehem
of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came
wise men from the east of Jerusalem, saying, Where is he that is born
King of the Jews? For we have seen his star in
the east, and we are come to worship him." Now, ain't that
amazing? Ain't that amazing? We're forbid
to worship anybody, but the Lord our God, which is one Lord, and
here these wise men came and worshiped the Lord Jesus. You
say, Bruce, they were seeking to worship Him. The Bible never
says they did. Oh, yes, it does. Look down in
verse 11. We don't know if this was a year,
if this was two years, but they finally found Him. And then He
was a young child in verse 11. And when they came into the house,
they saw the young child would marry his mother, and fell down
and worshipped him. And when they had opened their
treasures, they presented unto him gifts, gold and frankincense
and mirth." Now what does this tell us about this man? What
does this tell us about this baby, this child? You begin to
follow this here in the book of Matthew. And you can follow
it right on through Luke and Mark and John. And time and time
again, men and women and children came and worshipped the Lord
Jesus Christ. Never was their worship forbidden. Never was it refused. Never was
they rebuked for doing it. They worshipped Him and their
worship was accepted. Men and women and children worshipped
Him. Nature worshipped Him because
we are told that the wind and the seas obeyed Him. And devils
even came to worship Him because it said they trembled at His
voice. And the angels of God came down
from heaven and worshipped Him. And you remember when the Lord
Jesus had his apostles on Mount Olives, and he was ready to ascend
back up into heaven. He lifted up his hands to bless
them, and he ascended up out of their sight. And Luke chapter
24 verse 52 says they worshipped him, and they returned to Jerusalem
with great joy. They worshipped him. What does
this tell us about Jesus Christ? He is to be worshipped. He is
to be worshipped. He's the second person of the
sacred trinity. He's a man because He was born
of a woman, but He's more than a mere man. He is the God-man,
the Son of God. equal with God, one with God
from all eternity. And they worshiped Him that way.
Hear, O Israel, the Lord thy God is one Lord. Thou shalt worship
Him, and Him only, and Him only. And He never forbid worship.
He never rejected their worship. I remember a few months ago we
heard Brother Todd Nybert. He said in a message that he
was preaching, He said, I delight, I love to make this statement.
Jesus Christ is God. Remember that? Jesus Christ is
God. I love the ring of that. I love
how it sounds. Jesus Christ is God. And I'll tell you somebody else
that loved the sound of that. Thomas loved the sound of that.
When Thomas said, if I don't see the prince in his hands and
thrush my hands in the hole in his side, I'll never believe
that he rose from the dead. And the Lord Jesus appeared to
him. And he said, Thomas, you reach into your fingers and you
put them here in the prints of the nails. And you reach your
fingers here in your hand and put it into my side. And what
did Thomas say? My Lord and my God. And the Savior
said to him, Because you have seen me, you believe. Believe
what? That I am your Lord and I am
your God. You believe that I am God. I
am the God-man. Therefore, any worship that denies
that Jesus Christ is God and that does not have the Lord Jesus
Christ as its object, It's not true worship. It's the worship
of another God. Look at another passage with
me, just over to your right. Look in John chapter 9. Look
at this. Worship. Look in John chapter
9 and verse 35. Look at this. John chapter 9 and verse 35.
Jesus heard that they cast him out. You remember the context.
The Lord gives sight to this man that was born blind. And
when the Pharisees begin to interrogate him, and he gives the Lord Jesus
the glory for it, they cast him out. And the Lord Jesus heard
that they cast him out. And when he found him, he said
unto him, Dost thou believe on the Son of God? He answered and
said, Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on him? And Jesus said
unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and it is he that talketh
with thee. And he said, Lord, I believe,
and he worshipped him. Now how did he worship Jesus
Christ? By believing that he was the
Son of God. When you and I believe that Jesus
Christ is the Son of God, we worship Him. I believe that you're
the Son of God, and believing that, he worshipped Him. What is worship? What is worship? It's believing that Jesus Christ
is the Son of God. That's worship. Now, Carl Reason
is going to stand up and say, Bruce, you can't have it both
ways. If you say that Jesus Christ is very God, then how can you
have Him as the Son of God? If you worship Him as God, how
can you worship Him as the Son of God? If you say He's truly
and surely the Son of God, you can't say that He's the eternal
God. One fellow said you can't have the Son of God in the Garden
of Gethsemane praying to His Father who is in heaven. and
still say that He's God. You can't have the Son of God
standing in Jordan's river with the Holy Spirit represented as
a dove over His head and the Father in heaven saying to Him,
Thou art my beloved Son. You can't have both ways. You've
either got to have the Father or you've got to have the Son. So we've got the Jehovah Witness
that says we've got one God And Jesus Christ is not Him. And then you've got your Pentecostal
that says Jesus Christ is God and He's only God. You don't
have the Father and the Son and the Spirit. It's Jesus only. See what I'm saying? But the
Scripture says this, there are three that bear record in heaven. And these three are one. Corner of Reason cannot figure
that out, can it? There's one God, one God, and
there's one Mediator between God and man. Old Corner of Reason
says that cannot be. That cannot be. That He's not
God if He's between God and man. God hath in these last days spoken
to us by His Son, who, when he had by himself purged our sins,
sat down on the right hand of the majesty in the heaven." God
on the right hand of God. This man, after he had offered
one sacrifice to God forever, sat down on the right hand of
God. Who is this man? He is the Son
of God, and he is God the Son. The carnal mind racks its brain
trying to figure this out. But the heart of faith believes
it. And believing it worships. Worships. There's no worship
apart from worshiping Jesus Christ as God. If He's not God, it's
idolatry to worship Him. We worship Him as God, and we
worship Him when we believe that He's the Son of God, equal to
the Father. Ain't that a mystery? Well, then
worship's a mystery, isn't it? Worship is a mystery. Maybe this
is why the Scriptures don't try to define it and say it's this
or it's that. It's a mystery, and it's a mystery
that only can be entered into by faith. You can't worship apart
from believing. You can't worship apart from
believing God, from believing His Word. I believe, Lord, and
therefore you worship. Grave is the mystery of godliness. God was manifest in the flesh
and believed on in the world. Faith is a mystery and worship,
therefore, is a mystery. And it can only be entered into
by faith. This I confess unto you, Paul
said, that the way which they call heresy, so worship I the
God of my Father, believing all things which are written in the
Law and in the Prophets." How do we worship when we believe
all things that are written in the Word of God? Through worship We worship God when we believe
what God has written to us in His Holy Word. We worship. When we believe what God says
about Himself, we worship Him. When we believe what God says
about us, we worship Him. When we believe what God says
about His Son, that He's our way back to the Father, our access
back to God, we worship Him. I am the way. I'm the way to
the Father. And Paul said, that's the way
they call heresy. Christ is the way. He's the access
to God. And that's the way I worship
God. I believe all things that he says. Now somebody will say,
Bruce, a large percent of the people profess to believe that
the Bible is God's Word. But that's not what I'm really
saying. A man may believe the Bible is God's Word and never
worship. I'm not saying if we believe
the Bible is God's Word, we worship. But I'm saying this, to believe
God as He speaks in His Word to us. And there's a big difference. Do I believe God as He speaks
in His Word? And here's the difference in
those two statements. You may believe that the Bible
is God's Word. It has no effect upon you. I
believe every word in here. It has no effect upon you. But
when we believe that this is God speaking, and He speaks to
us through this Word, it has a profound effect upon your heart
and your whole attitude concerning God, concerning yourself, concerning
Christ, concerning living in this world. Believing God will
affect our character. It will affect our conduct, what
we think, what we say, what we do. To believe God will affect
our entire attitude about everything. I'll give you a good example,
and here we have it in our text. God said in effect to Abraham,
take your son, your only begotten son, Isaac, that you love, and
take him up there on Mount Moriah, and you offer him for a burnt
offering, and I'll raise him from the dead. That's in effect
what God told Abraham. How could Abraham do such a thing?
Why would he do such a thing? What a drastic thing to do, to
offer his son. Why did he do that? He believed
God. Brothers and sisters, that's
the only reason he did it. He believed God. Listen to Hebrews
11, verse 17. By faith, by faith, Abraham offered
when he was tried offered up Isaac, and he that had received
the promises offered up his only begotten Son, whom it was said,
In Isaac shall thy seed be called." Listen, accounting that God was
able to raise him from the dead. He believed God. This word accounting,
it means to esteem. Esteeming that God. And it means
that Abraham esteemed what God told him above his own feelings,
and own current reasoning, and his doubts and fears. He esteemed
God. He believed God. And when God
spake, Abraham believed Him, and he obeyed Him, and that obedience
was worship. What is it to worship? It's obedience
to God. Because you have obeyed my voice. God bore witness to Abraham's
worship. You have obeyed my voice. And
in obeying my voice, you've worshipped me. What is it to worship? It's to obey God. It's to obey
God. Worship is vitally linked to
these two things. Now listen to me. We're getting
into what worship is. It's to obey God. It's to obey
God. And it's vitally linked to these
two things. One, our hearts, that is, our
spirits, what we are really in ourselves, in our souls, and
it's linked to the truth. Our hearts and the truth. You
cannot worship as far as I know, except it's a heart worship,
and it's according to truth. Listen to the words of our Master.
God is the Spirit, and they that worship Him must worship Him
in spirit, that is, in our spirits and in truth. And as far as I
know, brothers and sisters, a worship that is not according to God's
Word, a worship that is not performed from our hearts, is not acceptable
to God. Those who worship with their
hands, they build their altars, they use relics, They worship
with outward ceremonies and acts of superstition. They worship
God, but they worship Him ignorantly. And therefore, their worship
is not accepted. It's only when the heart worships,
and worships God in truth, that is true worship. Look at another
place with me. Look at Philippians chapter 3.
It's a very interesting passage. Philippians chapter 3. Look at
this. Parents, I think you've turned
our air conditioning up too high. We're getting hot. Yeah, you
better. We're spoiled people, aren't
we? And I can't have it. I want it just right. Not just
right for you, but just right for me. Look in Philippians chapter
3, talking about worship. It's a heart thing. It involves
the heart. It involves the truth. Paul said
in verse 3, we are the circumcision which worship God in the Spirit. How do we worship God in the
Spirit? He tells us, we rejoice in Christ Jesus and have no confidence
in the flesh. How does God worship? When our
spirits rejoice in Christ. And when we have no confidence
in our flesh. Now what in the world is this
pertaining to? We're talking about rejoicing in Christ. What
does that mean? No confidence in our flesh. Well
you know if you've read this context what it's pertaining
to. We have no confidence that because I'm who I am or what
I do that I have a righteousness before God. That's the context. You look at it in verse 4. I
might also, though I might have confidence in the flesh, if any
man thinks that he might trust in the flesh, I'm over. I was
circumcised the eighth day of the stock of Israel, of the tribe
of Benjamin, and Hebrew of the Hebrew, as touching the law,
a Pharisee, concerning zeal, persecuting the church, touching
the righteousness, which is the law, blameless. Paul said, if
you think you can trust in your flesh, look what I've done. Look
who I am. I was religious when I was eight
days old. I was born religious. But look what he said in verse
7. But what things were gained to me, those I counted lost for
Christ. Yea, doubtless, and I count all
things but lost for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus
my Lord. for whom I suffered the loss
of all things and count it but done, that I may win Christ."
Now you have these two things, don't you? Paul said, here's
what I was. I was trying to work out a righteousness
that I could be accepted before God in. He said, I finally saw
that I couldn't do that. So I counted all my righteousness
done. I hated it. I threw it away as
nothing, as done. Okay, Paul. Where are you going
to put your confidence in then? How are you going to be accepted
with God? He's got to have a righteousness. If you can't work it out, where
are you going to get one to be accepted in? He tells us in verse
9, "...and be found in Him, not having mine own righteousness,
which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of
Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith." Now see
what he says? when you and I count our own
righteousness as filthy rags and put no confidence in it anymore.
And when we look to Jesus Christ and Him alone as our righteousness
and acceptance with God, and our hearts rejoices in Him that
He is that, then we worship. Then we worship. When you and I look upon our
flesh and we're disgusted with it because we see sin and violence
in it, yet looking away from our flesh and believing and rejoicing
that Jesus Christ is all our righteousness, then we rejoice. That's worship. That's worship. When you and I grow old within
ourselves, because of this awful warfare, evil, warfaring against
the good, righteousness and sin, warring against each other. And
yet at the same time we believe and rejoice that in Jesus Christ
we are not condemned. We worship Him. We worship Him. When we see our inability, when
we feel our spiritual weakness, that we can't do anything that
God commands us to do, that we can't believe, we can't pray,
we can't walk humbly with our God in the way that we should. Yet out of all of this, out of
our weakness and inability, we believe and rejoice that through
Jesus Christ we can do all things. And we see that His grace is
sufficient for us, and we believe that in our utter weakness, His
strength is perfected. Then we worship. Then we worship. And when we face the solemn reality
of dying, this body separating from the Spirit, going to its
long home, waiting for the judgment and the resurrection, and when we can believe in our
hearts, and rejoice that Jesus Christ by His own dying has destroyed
death. And by His own resurrection has
gotten victory over the grave. And we sing, O death, where is
your sting? O grave, where is your victory? Then we worship. Then we worship. What is worship? It's counting
your own righteousness as filthy rag. and finding yourself in
Jesus Christ, righteous before God, and rejoicing over it, there's
when you worship. Bruce, you're telling me that
Jesus Christ is all your righteousness? I'm telling you that's so. And
if He's not all your righteousness before God, and you're happy
to have Him so, you've never worshipped a day in your life.
Now that's so, ain't it? What is worship? It's putting
our mouth in the dust. Counting our own works and our
own marriages as filthy rags, and finding righteousness and
salvation in the person and work of the dear and blessed Son of
God. Worship has everything to do
with Him, and confidence in the Lord Jesus Christ. Luther made
this statement. He said, Are you worried with
your own righteousness? Rejoice! and confide in the righteousness
of Christ. Learn, my dear brother, to know
Christ and Him crucified. Learn to despair of yourself
and to sing to the Lord this song, Lord Jesus, Thou art my
righteousness, but I am Thy sin. Thou hast taken what belonged
to me and hast given me what belongs to Thee. Thou becomest
what you were not, in order that I might become what I am not
in and of myself." And with an attitude like that, we worship. We worship. It's spiritual worship
and it's accepted to God. And it's out of this worship
that we serve God acceptably with reverence. We serve Him
as we worship Him and we worship Him as we believe Him and obey
Him and submit ourselves to Him. That's worship. That's worship.
Me and the lad will go yonder and worship and come again unto
you. Abraham worshiped by obeying
God. But he said the lad is going
to worship too. How did the lad worship? When he submitted himself
to the will of Abraham, his father. Abraham worshipped by obeying
God. Isaac worshipped by submitting
himself to the will of his father. To obey is better than sacrifice,
and to hearken is better than the Fatima Rams. Obedience is
worship. And to disobey is stubbornness
and rebellion as the sin of witchcraft. To honor God is to believe Him. To honor God is to obey Him,
and to disobey Him is to rebel against Him. And to disobey Him and to put
one's trust in our own selves is to deny the all-sufficiency
and love and trustworthiness of the Lord Jesus Christ. And
those who refuse and rebel neither worship God nor serve God. Believe in God. Obeying God. Submitting to God in Christ.
That's worship. That's worship. In closing, let me say this.
Paul said this in Romans 1, chapter 1, verse 9. He said, God is my
witness whom I serve with my spirit. Remember what the Scripture
says? Him only shall thou serve. And
Paul said, I serve Him with my spirit in the gospel of His Son. When a husband, for the gospel's
sake, loves his wife as Christ loved the church, he worships
God. When a wife, for the gospel's
sake, submits herself unto her husband, as unto the Lord, she
worships God. And when a mom and dad brings
their child up in the fear and admonition of the Lord for the
gospel's sake, they worship God. And when a child, for the gospel's
sake, obeys his mom and dad and seeks to please them, he worships
God. That's the way we worship. And when a man or woman, for
the gospel's sake, seeks to love his neighbor, and desires and
seeks that honest and quiet life, he worships God. And when a man
or woman, for the gospel's sake, seeks to maintain and promote
the kingdom of the Lord Jesus in this world, and maintain His
glory, and they abstain from anything and all things that
would diminish that glory, They worship God. They worship God. Brothers and sisters, let us
have grace to worship and serve God supremely. Supremely. Above everything. Above anything. And let us count every act and
every thought of disobedience to our God for what it really
is. sin, and a coming short of His
blessed glory. In closing, I want to read you
three scriptures. Turn with me right quick. Revelation chapter
7. Worship. Worship. Don't you long to be free? Free from this body of sin? where
you can worship God without the knowledge of sin. Worship the
Lord Jesus Christ as He is worthy of. Not have any doubts and fears. Well, here it told us about a
people here. Look at this. Revelation chapter 7 and verse
9. After this I beheld in low a
great multitude which no man could number, of all nations,
kindred, people, and tongues, stood before the throne and before
the Lamb, clothed with white robes and palms in their hands,
and they cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God,
which setteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb. And all the
angels stood about the throne, and about the elders and the
four beasts, and fell down before the throne on their faces, and
worshipped God, saying, Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving
and honor and power and might be unto our God forever and ever. Amen. Look in chapter 11. Look in verse 15. And the seventh angel sounded,
and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms
of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His
Christ, and He shall reign forever and ever. And the four and twenty
elders which sat before God on their seats fell down upon their
faces and worshipped God. And here is the way they worshipped,
saying, We give thee thanks, Lord God Almighty, which art,
and was, and art to come, because thou hast taken to thee thy great
power, and hast reigned, and hast reigned. Do you worship
God? How do you worship Him? Do you
worship Him and His Son? The Lord Jesus Christ. Do you
ascribe all the glory and the adoration to Him? Do you say
to Him, I'm so thankful, I'm glad that you're a sovereign
God. I'm glad that you reign. Look
in one more place. Look in chapter 19. Look in chapter
19 in verse 4. The four and twenty elders and
the four beasts fell down and worshipped God that sat on the
throne saying, Amen, Hallelujah. And a voice came out of the throne
saying, Praise our God, all you saints, and ye that fear Him,
both small and great. And I heard as it were the voice
of a great multitude. And as the voice of many waters,
And that's the voice of mighty thunder, saying, Hallelujah,
for the Lord God Omnipotent reigneth. And let us be glad and let us
rejoice and give honor to Him, for the marriage of the Lamb
is come, and His wife is made herself ready. Worship. God give us grace to worship.
God let us worship.
