What does the Bible say about buying the truth?

Proverbs 23:23 states, 'Buy the truth and sell it not,' emphasizing the importance of cherishing and holding on to the truth as a personal possession.

Proverbs 23:23 admonishes believers to 'buy the truth and sell it not,' which signifies acquiring the truth as something of immense value. The act of buying the truth makes it a personal possession, highlighting one's commitment to hold onto it amidst life's temptations. This truth isn't altered by our belief or disbelief; it remains steadfast regardless. The passage underscores the importance of wisdom, understanding, and instruction that come along with this truth, as they enable the believer to discern between right and wrong and to live a life aligned with God's will.

Proverbs 23:23

How do we know the truth is important for Christians?

The truth is essential for Christians as it is foundational to salvation and guides them in living a godly life, as stated in John 17:17.

For Christians, the truth is paramount because it is tied to the very essence of their faith and salvation. Jesus prayed in John 17:17, 'Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.' This indicates that believers are set apart and grow in their faith through the truth of God's Word. The truth not only informs their understanding of salvation but also dictates how they are to live—called to deny themselves, take up their cross, and follow Christ. Embracing the truth leads to godliness, worship, and a life that reflects the character of God, making it indispensable to the Christian life.

John 17:17

Why is truth essential for salvation?

Truth is essential for salvation because it is only through knowing and believing the truth that one can be saved, as indicated in 1 Timothy 2:4.

Salvation hinges on the truth, as the knowledge of the truth is what leads one to salvation. In 1 Timothy 2:4, it is written that God desires all to come to the knowledge of the truth. This highlights that understanding and embracing the truth about God, humanity, and the redemptive work of Christ is vital for salvation. The objective truth of the gospel reveals humanity's need for a Savior and God's provision in Christ. Without this truth, one remains lost in darkness and unaware of their dire state. The truth frees believers, ensuring they are delivered from sin and reconciled to God.

1 Timothy 2:4

How do we know the doctrines of grace are true?

The doctrines of grace align with the core teachings of Scripture, emphasizing God's sovereignty in salvation, as seen in Ephesians 1:4-5.

The doctrines of grace, encapsulated in teachings like total depravity, unconditional election, and irresistible grace, are substantiated by numerous biblical texts. Ephesians 1:4-5 reminds us that God chose His people before the foundation of the world, indicating His sovereignty in salvation. These doctrines affirm that salvation is wholly the work of God, not dependent on human effort or merit. The consistency of these teachings across various Scriptures and their aligned focus on God's glory and grace serve as compelling evidence for their truth. The doctrines are not merely theological constructs, but profound truths rooted in the nature of God and His redemptive plan.

What a sweet thought to think of the Lord saying,
when my name is called, Father, I'm here. He didn't say, Todd's
here. He says, I'm here. That's a sweet,
sweet thought. Would you turn to Proverbs chapter
23? While you're turning there, Donnie
Bell, pastor of the Lantana Grace Church in Crossville, Tennessee,
is going to be preaching for us tonight. I'm really looking
forward to that. special dear friend. Proverbs chapter 23. I'd like
to read verse 23. By the truth and sell it not. also wisdom and instruction and
understanding. I had prepared a message from
John chapter 11, and Lord willing, we'll get back to that. But this
Thursday night, I woke up several times with this verse of scripture
on my mind. How I don't know, well, I believe
I do know. I believe it was the Lord, but I just kept thinking
about this verse of scripture. Buy the truth and sell it not. And I just kept turning it over
in my mind. Buy the truth and sell it not. Buy the truth. Now, when you
buy something, it becomes yours, doesn't it? Now, the truth is
the truth. Whether I buy it or whether I
sell it. Doesn't make any difference. Doesn't have any bearing on the
truth. The truth is the truth whether I believe it or whether
I don't believe it. The truth is the truth. But when I buy
the truth, it becomes mine. The objective truth becomes mine. Buy the truth so that the truth
is yours. It's your personal possession. And don't sell it. Don't sell
out. How many times have you seen
people sell out? Buy the truth. Make this the
business of your life to buy the truth and to not sell out. With buying the truth, according
to our text, comes wisdom. Don't you want to have wisdom?
I don't want to just have knowledge. Listen, I'm all for knowledge,
but wisdom is the right use of that knowledge. Without wisdom,
knowledge is useless knowledge to you. With buying the truth
comes wisdom and instruction, being taught, being taught by
God. Well, I want him to be my teacher,
don't you? We're in trouble if I'm the only teacher here. We're
in big trouble. I need to be taught by God himself. With buying the truth comes instruction
from God. And next he says, with understanding.
And that word understanding means discernment. Knowing the difference
between the true and the false. That which is of God and that
which is of man. Now I want that, don't you? I
want some discernment so I can know the difference. Buy the
truth. Believe it so that it becomes
yours. If you buy something, it's yours.
The truth is not the most important thing. The truth is the only
thing. That's what happens when you
buy the truth. It's the pearl of great price that when you
find it, you sell all you have to have this one pearl of great
price and If I am unwilling to sell all I have for this pearl,
this one pearl of great price, this treasure hid in the field,
if I'm unwilling to sell all that I have to have this one
pearl, the truth, it's because I really don't believe in the
value of the pearl. Because if I believe the value
of this pearl, I'll sell everything I have to possess this one pearl
of great price. Buy the truth and sell it not. Don't sell out. My first job
when I got out of school was a bank teller. I was a failure
as a bank teller. That's the only job I've ever
been fired from. I've told you that before. I mean, I can't
even balance my own checkbook. So how in the world? You know,
I've never balanced my checkbook once. It always comes out different.
I just go ahead and take whatever the bank gives me because I can't
do it. It's not in me to do that. But I remember when I was being
trained to be a teller, I mean, I've never had much money and
all of a sudden thousands of dollars were passing through
my hands. I mean, thousands of dollars.
And don't think for a second that I didn't think, what if
I just walked out with this? I mean, you know, I mean, I remember
my sister, this is a true story, she was being interviewed for
a job and they asked her, have you ever thought about stealing
money? And she said, well, sure I have. Well, they wouldn't hire
her, like somebody who never thought of that. If you have
that kind of money going through your hands, you'd be thinking
about taking it. I mean, that's wrong. I realize that. It's evil.
But I go to Mexico and all the things, stuff comes through your
mind. But I remember when they were
training me, I can't remember the guy's name. He said this. He said, now, you're going to
be faced with temptations with all this money going through
your hands. And he said, you know, everybody has a price at
which they can be bought. Everybody, without exception,
has a price that they can be bought. Some have a higher price,
but everybody's got a price. Now, there's only, that's true,
but there's a problem with it. In order to sell out, you have
to have something that's worth selling out for, don't you? You
have to have something that's more valuable to you than that
which you're selling out for. If you know Christ, if you have
that one pearl of great price, if you're found in Him, there's
nothing this world has to offer that's worth selling out for.
You really believe that? You find that one pearl of great
price, you will sell everything to have that one pearl. And if
you don't, it's because you've never really seen the value of
that one great pearl. Buy the truth and sell it not. Don't sell out. Now, if you sell
out, you can benefit from that without question. If I do sell out, there will
be benefits, the smile and praise of this world, perhaps more financial
success, perhaps upward mobility. But if I sell out, I'll prove
that I never really saw the value of Christ. I'll be like Esau.
Remember what the scripture says about Esau? For one morsel of
meat, he sold his birthright. And the scripture calls him a
profane person. Lest there be any profane person
as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright. You
know what that word profane means? It means accessible. It means
you can be bought. Esau could be bought. Why? Because he'd never seen or believed
the value of the birthright. Somebody that believes the value
of Christ, he's my salvation, they cannot be bought by the
truth and sell it not. Lay hold upon the truth. Now
let me show you why this is so important. Buy the truth and
sell it not. Buy the truth and sell it not. God is a God of truth. Deuteronomy chapter 32 verse
5 says a God of truth without iniquity, just and right is He. The Lord Jesus Christ, the Son
of God, the second person of the Trinity, I love what He calls
Himself. He says, I am the truth. He didn't say, I'll show you
the truth. He didn't say, I'll teach you the truth. He didn't
say, I'll lead you to the truth. He said, I'm it. I am the truth. God, the Holy spirit is called
the spirit of truth. And John chapter 16, verse 13
says, he will guide you into all truth now by the truth and
sell it. Not the truth is something you
do. The truth is something you do. If we say we have fellowship
with Him and walk in darkness, we lie and do not the truth. John said no lie is of the truth. Turn with me for a moment to
John chapter three. John chapter three. Verse 19, And this is the condemnation,
that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather
than light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone that
doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light,
lest his deeds should be reproved or exposed. But he that doeth
truth, You see, truth is something you do. He that doeth truth cometh
to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they're
wrought in God. Now, what is this thing of doing
the truth? Well, first of all, it's faith. Doing the truth is
believing the truth. In Titus chapter 1, verse 1,
we read of the faith of God's elect, the faith that all of
God's elect have. And you know how it's described?
The acknowledging of the truth. The embracing of the truth, which
is after godliness. Every time you embrace the truth,
it's after godliness. It leads to godliness. If it
doesn't lead to godliness, you didn't embrace the truth. The
acknowledging of the truth, which is after godliness. Repentance. We read in 2 Timothy chapter
2, if God will peradventure grant them repentance to the acknowledgement
of the truth. That's what repentance is. You
change your mind. You didn't acknowledge the truth.
You do now. You embrace the truth. Worship. Remember what our Lord said?
God is spirit. And they that worship Him must
worship Him in spirit and in truth. There's no worship in
spirit There's no Holy Spirit worship, and that's what that's
talking about. When you worship Him in spirit, that means you
worship Him as inspired by the Holy Spirit, as enabled by the
Holy Spirit. Let me remind you, I never say
to a mixed audience, come worship with us. Come worship with us. I don't, when I'm on our TV program,
I don't say, y'all come on out and worship with us. No, you've
got to be a believer to worship. You've got to have the Holy Spirit
to worship. It's impossible for a natural man to worship. Now
say, come hear the gospel. I want you to hear the gospel.
If God's going to save you, it's going to be through the hearing
of the gospel. But as far as worship, they that worship him must worship
him in spirit. They must have the Holy Spirit
that must be born from above. They must be born again. They
that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. There's no worship of God apart
from the truth of the gospel. Sanctification. Listen to this
scripture. John 17 verse 17. Our Lord said,
sanctify them. Sanctify them through thy truth. Thy word is truth. Remember what Paul said in 2
Thessalonians 2.13, but we're bound to thank God always for
you, brethren, beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the
beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the
Spirit and what? Belief of the truth. The new birth comes through the
truth. James 1.18 says of his own will,
begat he us, birthed he us through the word of truth. Freedom comes
through knowing the truth. Our Lord said, you shall know
the truth and the truth shall make you free. It'll set you
at liberty. Christ's purpose in coming. That
passage of scripture we read at the opening of this service. For this cause came I into the
world that I should bear witness to the truth. Salvation in 1
Timothy 2.4 is described as coming to the knowledge of the truth. Doing the truth is more than
having the right information. Turn with me to 2 Thessalonians
for a moment. Verse 11, And for this cause God shall
send them strong delusion that they should believe a lie, that
they all might be damned who believe not the truth. but had
pleasure in unrighteousness. Now let's look at this phrase
for this cause. For what cause? Look in verse 9. Even him whose
coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs
and lying wonders and with all deceivableness of unrighteousness
in them that perish because they receive not... What? The love of the truth. that they
might be saved. For this cause, because they
received not the love of the truth, for this cause God shall
send them strong delusions that they should believe a lie. Doing
the truth is loving the truth. That's when the objective truth
Objective means it doesn't have anything to do with me. Subjective
means how I feel about it. How I feel about it. What goes
on on the inside. Objective is out there. Subjective is in here.
Now, when I love the truth, the object of truth becomes subjective. It becomes mine. When I love
the truth, I buy the truth. And I refuse to sell it. Now,
I want to be described by this, don't you? I want to be somebody
who buys the truth, who believes the truth, who makes it their
own, and they refuse to sell it. Now, let's turn back to John
chapter 18, that famous question of Pilate. Now, Pilate has been informed
that Christ called himself a king, which would have been against
Caesar. And that's the accusation the Jews brought against him. Verse 35, Pilate answered, Am
I a Jew? Thine own nation and the chief
priests have delivered thee unto me. What hast thou done? Jesus
answered, My kingdom is not of this world. That's a blessed thought, isn't
it? My kingdom is not of this world. Don't worry about the
primaries and politics and all that kind of stuff. It's a waste
of time. My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world,
then would my servants fight that I should not be delivered
to the Jews. But now is my kingdom, not from him. Pilate therefore
said unto him, Art thou a king then? I mean, you're talking
about a kingdom. You must be a king. Jesus answered, thou sayest that
I'm a king. To this end was I born to be
king. And for this cause came I into the world that I should
bear witness unto the truth. Everyone that is of the truth
heareth my voice. Pilate said unto him, what is
truth? Now, what did Pilate mean when
he asked that question? What is truth? Now, this is a wonderful
question. What is truth? I hope everybody
in here is asking themselves that question. I want to know
the answer to that question. What is truth? Buy the truth and sell
it not, but what is truth? I need to know what it is I'm
buying and what I'm refusing to sell. What is truth? Now,
what did Pilate mean when he asked that question? Well, there
are three things he could have meant. First, he could have meant
What is truth? Is there such a thing? Is there
absolute truth? Now, I can understand why someone
would ask that question if they don't believe that God created
the universe. If somehow this creation, or if it's not a creation,
if somehow some kind of chemicals got together through some kind
of explosion, I know I'm speaking ignorantly. I don't know how
to bring forth what those who deny creation say, but somehow
this, something, all of a sudden there was life. That's basically
what they're saying. All of a sudden there was life,
something happened. Some kind of chemicals got mixed up, bam,
there's life. Well, if you believe that, I
can understand why you, where's truth in, is there such a thing
as truth? But if there's a personal God
who created the universe, and there He is, Obviously, there
is absolute truth. What is truth? Is there such
a thing? Yes, there is. He could have
also meant this, truth, truth. What is truth? Can we know it?
I mean, sure there's truth, but wouldn't it be presumptuous and
arrogant for me to say, I know the truth, like I've got a corner
on the truth and all these other folks are wrong and I'm right?
That seems presumptuous. Can you ever say you know the
truth for sure? You know, the only thing we can
be sure of is that we can't be sure of anything. Are you sure? Our Lord said, you shall what? know the truth, and the truth
shall make you free. And it's not really your knowledge
of the truth that makes you free, it's the truth himself who makes
you free, because you know as well as I do, you don't know
the truth well enough to, you think of how many times when
you think you know it, then you go backwards the next day, and all the ups
and downs, ups and downs, sometimes you feel free, sometimes you
don't. Not talking about your knowledge of the truth that makes
you free, but it's the truth himself who makes you free. You should
know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. You know,
here's what I believe Pilate meant. I don't believe he's talking
about, is there such thing as truth? He knew there was. You
know, he knew they delivered the Lord Jesus for envy. He knew
what the Jews were all about. He knew there's truth, and he
knew you could know it. But what he was saying to our Lord as
he saw our Lord standing before his accusers and his enemies,
and he was getting ready to be put to death, truth! Is it worth
this? Is it worth dying for? Sure,
there's truth. I believe there's truth, but
is it worth all this? They're going to kill you over
this. Is truth worth this? Is truth essential? Yes. It's worth this. Yes, truth is
absolutely essential. Our Lord said, I came. to bear
witness to the truth. And you know what that word bear
witness means? It's where we get the English word martyr from. He's saying, I came to bear witness
by my death to the truth. Now, the truth is where it dies. You believe that? Is the gospel
you believe worth dying for? To everybody who believes it,
it is. I came to bear witness by my death to the truth. Now
I want you to think about this. When our Lord was flung down
on the ground and those Roman soldiers took nails and hammered
them through his hands and through his feet and picked that cross
up in the air and dropped it in the stand, and there He hangs. And they're going to watch Him
hang there until He dies. That is the ultimate manifestation
of the truth. Now in Christ, He said, I came
to bear witness by my death to the truth. In Christ dying on
the cross, first of all, I see the truth concerning me and you. I see the truth regarding man. When you and I, I'm talking about
me right now, if God takes the restraints away and if God lets
me do what I want to do, if God lets you do what you want to
do, you'll nail Jesus Christ to a cross. Men naturally hate
Christ as is revealed in the Bible. Now nobody hates the Jesus
that's preached that's kind of, you know, he wants to save everybody
and loves everybody and wants everybody to be saved, but he
can't unless you let him. Nobody's praying to that Jesus. Nobody
hates that Jesus. You know, he's their buddy. That's
not the Jesus I'm talking about. That's a false Jesus. I'm talking
about the Lord Jesus Christ of the Bible. Men hate him. And when God takes away the restraints,
here's what I'd do. I'd nail him to a cross. You
believe that about yourself? Don't look within to find out
how bad you are. You won't find out. You look
to the cross and that tells you the truth regarding yourself.
Diabolically evil, totally depraved, evil to the core, bad to the
bone. That's what God's Word says about
me and you. And the only way I can see that is by seeing the
cross. The cross is the manifestation
of who I am and what I am. And that's the only place I'm
going to find the truth about myself. The cross. Now buy the truth.
Believe it. Believe this because it's what
God's Word teaches. Believe it about yourself. Even if you don't
feel it, believe it. It's so whether you feel it or
not. It doesn't say feel it. Believe it. Buy the truth regarding
yourself. The truth, the cross of the Lord
Jesus Christ, that one nailed to a cross, suffering, bleeding,
and dying, that tells me the truth concerning the true character
of God. You know, God, listen to me, God is not known or seen
apart from the cross of the Lord Jesus Christ. And in the cross,
when I see Christ hanging on a cross, all of God's characters
manifest in the cross. First thing that comes to my
mind is His sovereignty, His sovereign purpose, His sovereign
will. Yeah, I love what Peter said about Christ taking on the
cross. He said, Him being delivered by the determinant counsel and
foreknowledge of God. you have taken, and with wicked
hands have crucified and slain." The reason Christ was hanging
on that cross is because it was the answer to the determinant
counsel and foreknowledge of God. God determined for it to
be done. That's why it took place. God is absolutely sovereign.
I see the holiness of God and the justice of God. He's not
going to let sin go unpunished. When sin was found on His Son, I see the holiness of God. I
see the justice of God. I see the grace of God. This week, oh, you all know what
happened in that university where that fellow shot 16 people and
five people were killed and it's just a hideous, wicked thing.
Now, I'll be honest with you. I wouldn't give my daughter to
die for that fellow, would you? Of course you wouldn't. I've
got one child. Matter of fact, I wouldn't give
her for anybody. I wouldn't do it. He did. Now that is grace that I just
can't imagine. That He would give His Son for
somebody like me? Somebody so sinful, so evil,
so weak, so unlovable. He gave His Son for me? Now that's
grace, isn't it? That's love beyond description. I see the wisdom of God, how
He made a way to be just and justify somebody like me through
the cross of the Lord Jesus Christ. Oh, what wisdom! Man could never
come up with anything like this. Ain't no way. And if they could
come up with it, which they can't, but if they could come up with
it, they couldn't execute it, but He can. What glory is in the
Lord Jesus Christ? I see the power of God in Him
putting away my sin and making it to where it's not. I have
no sin. Can you see where the cross is
a complete display of everything that God is? I see that. I've been to Calvary. I can say
I've seen the Lord. In the cross, I see the truth
concerning me. I see the truth concerning God.
I see the truth concerning salvation. Now, what were our Lord's last
words from the cross? It is what? Everybody say that loud. Finished. That's a great word, isn't it?
It is finished. What's finished? My salvation. the salvation of everybody he
died for. Hebrews 10 14 says, for he hath perfected forever
them that are sanctified. That's what he did by his offering.
He perfected forever. I've perfected forever by what
Christ did. It is finished. And you know, I believe that.
Somebody says, well, what about faith? Don't you have to believe? Of
course you believe. You got to believe that. That's exactly what you believe. You
believe that what he did accomplished salvation. It is finished. In seeing him nailed to the cross,
I see the truth concerning how I am to live. I am to deny myself, to take up my cross, this confession
of Him, who He is, what He accomplished. I'm to deny myself. I'm to take
up my cross and follow Him. Anything short of that is playing
games. Anything short of that is insincere
hypocrisy. Christ, Jesus, is the Lord of
my life. He's my Lord. He's my Master. He's my God. And if He calls
on me to die in this confession of Him, that's fine. And I know,
apart from the grace of God, I'll chicken out, just like you
will. But by the grace of God, I follow Him. Love so amazing,
so divine demands my soul, my life, my all. Now by the truth, make it your
own and you do that by believing it. The gospel of God is my gospel. I say with Paul, God forbid that
I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. I glory
in the cross just like Paul did. Paul said I glory in the cross,
I do too. I find no hope, no confidence, no rest anywhere
else but in the cross. Turn with me to 1 Corinthians
2. Can you see, beloved, where the
cross is the truth? What is truth? The cross of our
Lord Jesus Christ. That answers that question, doesn't
it? That's the truth concerning me. That's the truth concerning
God's character. That's the truth concerning salvation. And that's the truth concerning
how I am to live, denying myself, taking up my cross daily and
following the Lord Jesus Christ. And look in 1 Corinthians 2,
verse 1. And I, brethren, when I came
to you, I came not with excellency of speech or wisdom, declaring
unto you the testimony of God. For I determined not to know
anything among you, save Jesus Christ and him crucified. Now, Paul, why would you determine
not to know anything else? I realize that's the most important
subject, but aren't there other things that go along with this? When you really see the meaning
of the cross, you see this is everything. The reason he determined
not to know anything else is because there wasn't anything
else to know. It wasn't like he was rejecting other stuff
to preach this. No, he said this is it. This
is everything. Everything is in the cross of
our Lord Jesus Christ. Buy the truth. Make it your own. Now, yes, the preaching of the
cross is to them that perish foolishness, but unto us which
are saved, what is it? It's the power of God unto salvation. Now, buy the truth and sell it
not. Now, how do you sell the truth? How do you sell out? No doubt there are things to
be gained in selling. This world will love you. You'll
make plenty of friends and influence many people. In some respects,
you'll have a better life. You certainly won't be persecuted. How do you sell the truth? Here's
the first way you sell it. It's what Paul said in Romans
1 18. He talked about for the wrath of God is revealed from
heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who
hold the truth. You hold it down. That's what
the word means. You hold it back. They hold the
truth in unrighteousness. You fail to tell the truth, the
whole truth and nothing but the truth. You leave out part. You
dress it up with wisdom of words. You dress it up with enticing
words of man's wisdom and so on to make it more palatable
to the flesh. You try to dress it up so the natural men will
accept it more. Here's a perfect example of this. Somebody who, the doctrines of
grace, they say, well, I'm a four pointer. I believe total depravity. I believe in unconditional election.
I believe irresistible grace and I believe in perseverance
of the saints, but I don't believe in limited atonement. I believe
there, there's only one motive for that. One motive. You're trying to
make the truth more palatable to the flesh. God elected the people, and they're
the only ones that can be saved? That Christ died for everybody?
Why, that's foolishness. And the only reason somebody
will hold a position like that is to make the gospel more palatable
to the flesh. That's holding down the truth
in unrighteousness. I sell the truth by not obeying
it. I think of what Paul said to the Galatians, O foolish Galatians,
who hath bewitched you that you should not obey the truth before
whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified
among you. The truth is the crucifixion
of the Lord Jesus Christ. We sell the truth by turning
from it. Look in 2 Timothy chapter 4. First, let's look in chapter
3, 2 Timothy chapter 3. Paul warns us of those who have
a form of godliness, verse 5. Having the form of godliness,
but denying the power thereof. From such turn away, for of this
sort, those who have a form of godliness, but deny the power
thereof, are they that creep into houses, and lead captive,
silly women, laden with sins, led away with diverse lusts,
ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the
truth. They're always learning about
missions, and how to win souls, and things like that, but they
never come to the knowledge of the truth. Now look in chapter
4, verse 1. I charge thee therefore before
God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and
the dead, it is appearing in His kingdom. Preach the word. Be instant, in season, out of
season, reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.
For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine.
But after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers,
having itching ears, and they shall turn away their ears from
the truth and shall be turned to fables. I want to look at one final Scripture.
Turn to Matthew chapter 15. You know, I think of what David
said in Psalm 51 when he said, Thou desires truth in the inward
parts and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom.
Here's truth in the inward parts. Matthew chapter 15, beginning
in verse 21. Then Jesus went thence. and departed
into the coasts of Tyre and Sidon. And behold, a woman of Canaan
came out of the same coasts and cried unto him, saying, Have
mercy on me, O Lord, thou Son of David! My daughter is grievously
vexed with the devil. Now she came for the right thing.
Have mercy on me. She came with an understanding
of who He was, O Lord, Thou Son of David. I mean, everything
about this woman is commendable the way she comes. Have mercy
on me, O Lord, Thou Son of David. My daughter is grievously vexed
with the devil. Now put yourself in this lady's
place. And look how our Lord dealt with her. Verse 23, But
He answered her not a word. He didn't even reply to her. And his disciples came and besought
him, saying, Send her away, for she crieth after us. Evidently,
she just kept crying, and he kept silent. She kept crying,
he kept silent. Started driving the disciples
crazy. Get her out of here. She just keeps crying. Verse
24, But he answered and said, I am not sent, but unto the lost
sheep of the house of Israel. I didn't come to save everybody.
Here this Gentile woman is crying after him. He says, I did not
come to save everybody. I only came to save the lost
sheep of the house of Israel. Now he's confronting her with
the doctrine of election, isn't he? I only came for a particular
people. I didn't come to save everybody.
Well, what did she say? Well, that's not fair. Look at
her response. Verse 25. Then she came and worshipped
Him. Now understand this. You've never
worshipped Him until you've seen you're in His hands and He can
do with you whatever He's pleased to do. He can save you or He
can send you to hell. It's up to Him. You've got no
control. You've got no control. Then, when she saw that, she
came and worshipped Him. saying, Lord, help me. But he answered and said. It's not meet. To take the children's
bread. And to cast it to dogs. It's not appropriate, it's not
right, it's not meek to take the gospel of the Lord Jesus
Christ, the children's bread, and to throw it out to dogs.
You know what he's saying to this woman? You are nothing more
than a dog. Now, how would you respond to
the Lord saying that to you? Well, look how she responded.
And she said, what? Truth. Yes, Lord. That's the truth. If ever the
truth was said, it was said. This is truth in the inward parts. Yet the dogs eat of the crumbs
which fall from their master's table. I wouldn't dare try to
take a place sitting among the children. I know I'm nothing
more than a dog, but I'm your dog. And I'd be grateful for
any crumbs of mercy that fall my way. Truth, Lord. And look what he said to her.
Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy
faith. Be it unto thee even as thou
wilt. And her daughter was made whole
from that very hour. That is truth. And the inward
parts. Buy the truth. Believe the truth. And don't sell out. I hope we have a bunch of folks
here this morning buying the truth. and refuse them to sell
out. Let's pray together.
