What does the Bible say about God's provision?

The Bible demonstrates God's provision through His miraculous sustenance, as seen in the story of Elijah and the widow in 1 Kings 17.

In 1 Kings 17, we witness God's miraculous provision for Elijah during a time of drought. God commands Elijah to go to Zarephath, where a widow has been chosen to sustain him. Despite her dire circumstances of near starvation, the widow obeys God's word through Elijah and finds that her supply of meal and oil does not run dry. This passage reveals that God's provision is not bound by human limitations and serves as a reminder that obedience to His commands can lead to unexpected blessings.

1 Kings 17:7-16

How do we know God's promises are true?

God's promises are affirmed through fulfilled prophecies and His faithfulness in Scripture, such as His promise to sustain the widow in Zarephath.

The truth of God's promises can be seen throughout the biblical narrative, where He consistently fulfills what He has declared. In the case of the widow in Zarephath, God's assurance to her through Elijah demonstrated His unwavering commitment to His word. The barrel of meal and the cruise of oil did not fail, illustrating that God's promises are not just future hopes but present realities grounded in His character and authority. We can trust that whatever He has spoken will come to pass, as evidenced by the stories of countless believers throughout history who have experienced His faithfulness.

1 Kings 17:14

Why is faith in God's provision important for Christians?

Faith in God's provision is crucial for Christians as it strengthens our trust in His goodness and sovereignty, even in difficult circumstances.

Understanding and having faith in God's provision is vital for the Christian life as it shapes our response to trials and tribulations. In moments of need, like the widow in Zarephath, our faith gives us the assurance that God sees our situations and sustains us according to His will. This faith does not eliminate hardship but assures us of His presence and supply during those times. The widow’s act of faith—trusting God's word through Elijah—led to miraculous provision and sustenance. As Christians, we are called to live by faith, believing that God is sovereignly at work for our good and His glory, trusting that He will provide for our needs.

Would you turn to 1 Kings 17.
Verse eight. Let's read verse seven
first. And it came to pass after a while
that the brook dried up. because there had been no rain
in the land. And the word of the Lord came unto him, saying,
Arise, get thee to Zarephath, which belongeth to Zidon. Interestingly,
that's where Jezebel was from. This was a Gentile land. And
dwell there. Behold, I have commanded a widow
woman there to sustain thee, So he arose and went to Zarephath,
it was over a hundred mile walk. And when he came to the gate
of the city, behold, the woman was there, gathering of sticks. And he called to her and said,
fetch me, I pray thee, a little water in a vessel that I may
drink. And as she was going to fetch
it, he called to her and said, bring me, I pray thee, a morsel
of bread in thine hand. And she said, as the Lord thy
God liveth, I have not a cake, but a handful of meal, flour
in a barrel, and a little oil in a cruz. And behold, I'm gathering
two sticks, that I may go in and dress it, for me and my son
that we may eat it and die. And Elijah said unto her, Fear
not, go and do as thou hast said, but make me thereof a little
cake first, and bring it unto me. How would you have responded
to that? and after make for thee and for
thy son, for thus saith the Lord God of Israel, the barrel of
meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruise of oil fail
until the day that the Lord sendeth rain upon the earth. And she
went and did according to the saying of Elijah, and she and
he and her house did eat many days, and the barrel of meal
wasted not. Neither did the cruise of oil
fail according to the word of the Lord, which he spake by Elijah. That's two years, day eight. Let's pray. Lord, we ask that you would be
pleased to meet with us and to speak in power to our hearts
Cause your gospel to be preached, and give us hearing ears and
receptive hearts. Lord, cause each of us to say,
speak, Lord, thy servant heareth. Lord, we confess our sins. We
pray for forgiveness and for cleansing for Christ's sake.
We pray that you'd bless all your people wherever they meet
together. And Lord, accept our thanksgiving. We're so thankful
for who you are, We're so thankful for the gospel of thy son. We're
so thankful for the freeness of your grace. Lord, give us
the grace to truly esteem the other as better than ourselves.
Cause us to take the lowest seat in the house and believe that's
where we belong. Bless us for Christ's sake. In his name we
pray. Amen. Elijah's watching Just because it's not turned
on out there somehow. It's not going on out there somehow,
so.
