What does the Bible say about the freeness of the gospel?

The Bible emphasizes that the gospel is offered freely to all who are thirsty and have no merit of their own.

The gospel is portrayed in Revelation 22:17 as an invitation to all who thirst: 'whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.' This highlights the gift's nature—free from any obligation or conditions on our part. The sense of thirst reflects a deep yearning for spiritual fulfillment, something only God can provide, emphasizing our complete dependence on Him. Isaiah 55:1 also reinforces this message, urging those who are thirsty to come and receive without any cost, showing that true spiritual satisfaction cannot be obtained through our own works or merits.

Revelation 22:17, Isaiah 55:1

How do we know that salvation is a gift?

Salvation is described as a free gift in Romans 6:23, emphasizing that it is not earned through works.

Scripture consistently labels salvation as a free gift, particularly in Romans 6:23, which states, 'the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.' This underscores the idea that eternal life and the righteousness associated with it cannot be earned or paid for; rather, it is bestowed freely by God's grace. Moreover, the concept of the gift being free is rooted in the understanding that we possess no inherent merit that could justify our salvation. It is God's nature to give, and He delights in offering the gift of salvation to those who come to Him empty-handed.

Romans 6:23, Romans 3:24

Why is it important for Christians to understand the concept of grace?

Understanding grace is vital as it assures Christians that salvation is entirely the work of God, not dependent on human actions.

The concept of grace is foundational to the Christian faith, primarily because it clarifies that salvation is solely a work of God. Ephesians 2:8-9 affirms that we are saved by grace through faith, emphasizing that this grace is 'not of yourselves; it is the gift of God.' This understanding liberates believers from the burden of trying to justify themselves through works, reinforcing the truth that our righteousness is found in Christ alone. Recognizing grace fosters deep gratitude and humility in believers, reminding them that they are recipients of God’s undeserved favor, which ultimately glorifies God rather than human effort.

Would you turn to Revelation
chapter 22? While you're turning there, Clay Curtis from New Jersey
is going to be preaching for us tonight. He's never preached
here before, but he's a dear friend and I'm looking forward
to having him preach for us. He's going to come here this
afternoon. He was at the conference in Danville. And our TV program
has been knocked to 11 o'clock on Sunday. We got knocked out
for a cartoon. CBS has to have cartoons between
seven and nine, so they put us on 11 and we'll try it for a
while, but I might look, I don't like that time personally, and
we'll see if we can get another time, but maybe with another
channel, I don't know, but that's what happened. Revelation 22 verse 17. I've entitled this message, How
free is the gospel? How free is the gospel? You know, one thing that I heard
Greg Youngwood say this weekend in Danville, he said, the one
thing that we must do is preach the gospel in its freeness. And I pray that that's what is
going to take place this morning. How free is the gospel? Verse 17, Revelation 22, And
the Spirit and the bride say, Come, and let him that heareth say, Come and let him that is a thirst
come and whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely. Now, in those two scriptures
that I've read this morning, the word that stuck out at me
in reading these verses was freely. Freely. Let him that's a thirst come
and whosoever will let him take the water of life freely. And what I thought was. Really? Can I personally take the water
of life freely? Now, when you hear something
advertised as free, you know it's not free, don't you? You
know it. You know that it's advertised
as free to get something out of you. There are always strings
attached, always. There's never been anything with
regard to men that was free. There are always strings attached. Well, how free is the gospel? Let me show you a couple of other
places where this word freely is used. Turn with me to John
chapter 15, verse 25. But this cometh to pass that
the word might be fulfilled that is written in their law. They
hated me without a cause. That's the word that's translated
freely in our text. Without a cause. Whosoever will,
let him take of the water of life without a cause. Without a cause in him. You don't
have to find a reason in yourself as to why you should take this
water of life. Turn with me to Galatians chapter
2. Freely. Verse 21, Galatians chapter two. I do not frustrate, I do not
make meaningless the grace of God, for if righteousness come
by the law, if somehow I can be righteousness by my personal
obedience in any way, then Christ is dead in vain. Now that's the
same word, Christ died for no reason. for no purpose. Now, if I could be saved by my
works in any way, the death of Christ was a waste of time. It had no reason. So let that
one come and take the water of life without a cause, without
a reason in themselves. How free is the gospel? How free? Is it really free? In Revelation 22 verse 17, the
message of the Spirit and the bride is come, not go away, not
leave, not go and make yourself better, not wait till you learn
more. The message of the Spirit, God,
the Holy Spirit, and the message of the bride, the church of the
Lord Jesus Christ is come, not go away, come, come and Welcome. Come right now to the Lord Jesus
Christ. Now, how do I come? He's at the
right hand of God. I'm floundering here on the earth.
How do I get there? How do I come to the Lord Jesus
Christ? I hear I'm called upon to come.
He said, he that cometh to me, I'll have no wise cast out. I
know that. How do I come? He's at the right hand of the
father. I'm just floundering. How do I come? The Lord said
in John 6 35, he that cometh to me shall never hunger. And
he that believeth on me shall never thirst. Now coming to Christ
and believing on Christ are the exact same thing. You believe in Christ when you
believe in His ability to save you without any help from you. Do you believe He is able to
save you without any help from you? Does He have the ability
to do this? Remember when those blind men
said, they came to the Lord and the Lord said, do you believe
that I am able to do this? They said, yeah, Lord. You believe in Christ when you
believe in His ability to save you with no help from you. You believe on Christ when you
commit to Him the salvation of your soul. I believe in His ability to save
me. And I am relying on Him. I'm looking to Him only. If He
doesn't do everything for me, I'll be in hell. I'm sure of
that. If He doesn't do it all, I'm relying on Him. I believe in Him. I believe in
His ability to save me, and I'm committing to Him the salvation
of my soul. My hands are off. If He doesn't
do it all, it's over for me. I'm relying completely on him. I see I'm in a burning building
and I'm gonna be burnt up if I stay here. I jump out the window
relying on him to catch me. If he didn't catch me, it's over
for me. It's not like it's a second floor,
I'm jumping off the Empire State Building. If he doesn't catch
me, it's over for me. Now that's what it is to come
to Christ. You believe in him, you believe
on him, you rely upon him. Now, who is told to take the
water of life and come to Christ? Look what it says in our text
in Revelation 22, 17, and the spirit and the bride say, come,
believe in him, believe on him. That's what God is commanding
you to do. Now, I need to say this to everybody
in this room. While it's true that God elected
a people and they're the only ones who will be saved, And it's
true that Jesus Christ died only for the elect and accomplished
their salvation. That's just the truth. You don't need to worry about
whether or not you're one of the elect, and you don't need
to worry about whether or not Christ died for you. You really
don't. All you're called upon to do
is to come to Him, to believe in Him, and to believe on Him.
That's what God commands you to do. Come and welcome. Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ,
and thou shalt be saved. And the Spirit and the bride
say, come, and let him that heareth say, come. You know, I love the
way the gospel, I love that passage of scripture, Evan read, one
of the names of the gospel is the hearing of faith. That's
a glorious name, isn't it? The hearing of faith. That one
who hears, who hears the gospel, say, come. Well, you know what
I say to the Lord? I say, come to me. Come to me. Come down and visit me. Come
down and have mercy on me. Lord, don't leave me to myself.
Come to me. This is our message. Come to
the Lord Jesus Christ. Let him that heareth. He hears
the gospel say, Come, come and welcome. And look what it says
next in verse 17. And let him that is athirst come. A thirst. The word of thirst
is what is called a participle. Here's a simple grammar lesson,
a participle, a verb participle. All that means is that it's a
word that acts both as a verb and an adjective. Here's what a believer is. Here's
what someone who comes to Christ is. Here's a description of them.
They're thirst. Here's what they do. They thirst. There's the verb. This is what
they are. They're thirst. This is what
they do. They thirst. A thirsty person. Now thirst,
thirst is about what you don't have rather than what you have.
I want you to think about that. Thirst is not about what you
have. It's about what you don't have. can't produce, and need. That is thirst. Thirst is the
absence of what is necessary. Now that thirsty man, that thirsty
woman, he or she has an absence of what they need. A thirsting man can be described
by what he does not have, cannot produce in himself, but must
have. Thirst is a conscious feeling
of need for what is necessary, for what you do not have, and
what you cannot produce. That is thirst. The Lord said, if any man thirst, Let him come to me and drink. Now, if any man thirsts, supposes
that not everybody does. You know, not everybody thirsts
for Christ. Not everybody thirsts for righteousness. Not everybody
thirsts to know him. Matter of fact, most folks don't.
I've heard men have a thirst for which they can't. No, they
don't. Men are satisfied. They're satisfied. They don't
need the gospel, but there's some who do. any man. Now, I love that it
says, if any man doesn't say if any believer thirsts, you
might not know whether you're one of those. It doesn't say
if one of the elect thirsts. You might not know if you're
one of that group. It says, if any man thirsts,
I don't care who you are. Oh, may God enable us to hear
the freeness of the gospel. If any man. Doesn't matter who
you are. Doesn't matter what your background
is. Doesn't matter what you've been guilty of. Doesn't matter
what you know or don't know. If any man thirsts, if any man
has an absence of what he needs and he can't produce it in himself,
if any man thirsts. You see, this is a state of blessedness,
this state of thirsting. It feels painful, but did not
the Lord say, blessed are they? Blessed by God are they who hunger
and thirst after righteousness. If any man thirst, let him come
to me and drink. Let's go on reading in verse
17. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life. Freely whosoever will see that
proves free will it does no such thing What's that got to do with
free will? Free will the very notion of
free will is ridiculous God doesn't even have free will your will
is controlled by your nature But it doesn't mean we don't
will you know the Lord said to that Man that was crippled laying
by the pool of Bethesda He'd been there for 38 years waiting
for the moving of the water. And the Lord said to him, wilt
thou be made whole? Are you willing to be made whole? Are you willing for Christ to
make you whole? Are you willing to be saved by
His grace? Are you willing to be saved by
a righteousness that your hand had no part in, but it was wholly
Him? Are you willing to have your
sins washed away, not by what you do, but by His precious blood? Are you willing to be saved by
the sovereign grace of God? Whosoever will. Anybody here willing to be saved
by free grace? I am. I am. I'm willing. Whosoever will. What a blessed
word. I love that word whosoever. Whosoever.
I'm one of them. Whosoever shall call upon the
name of the Lord shall be saved. Whosoever. I don't care what
your condition is. I don't care how much you know,
how little you know. I don't care how far off you
are, how abandoned you may feel. Whosoever will. Let him take the water of life freely, without a reason in himself,
without a cause. Let not conscience make you linger,
nor a fitness fondly dream. The only fitness He requires
is to have a need of Him. If you have a reason in yourself
as to why the water should be for you, you disqualify yourself. Hold your finger in Revelation
and turn to Isaiah 55. How free, I'm asking again, how
free is the gospel? Isaiah 55, verse 1. Ho! Isaiah 55, 1. Ho! Boy, isn't that amazing the
Lord uses language like that? Pay attention to this. That's
the Lord speaking. Ho! Listen! Listen! Everyone that
thirsteth, come ye to the waters, he that hath no money. Come ye
buy and eat, yea, come buy wine and milk without money and without
price. The stipulation for coming is
that you have to have no money, nothing to offer, no reason. You see, if you have money, you
disqualify yourself. If you have a reason in you as
to why God would do anything for you, All of a sudden, God's
become your debtor and that ain't gonna happen. You disqualify
yourself. Now, let me give you two reasons
why Christ and his gospel must be absolutely free. No strings
attached. This is the one thing that is
truly free. Nothing else is, but this is
absolutely free. Let me give you two reasons why
the gospel must be free. Number one, because you and I
have absolutely nothing we can pay. That's just the truth. You don't have one, I don't have
one thing about me that can recommend me to God or say, well, he ought
to save me because I this or I that, or he ought to have...
No, I have nothing to pay. And it must be free or I won't
have it. Here's a second reason why the
gospel must be absolutely free. Because the gift is of such infinite
value. Christ himself. God's unspeakable
gift. John 3.16, God so loved the world
that he gave his only begotten son that whosoever believeth
in him should not perish but have everlasting life. No value
can be put upon it and an attempt to pay means that we do not believe
the value is infinite. That's all that means. It shows
what a low opinion we have of this gift. Simon Magus. He offered
to buy the gift with money. And Peter said, you're yet in
the gall of bitterness and bond of iniquity because thou thoughtest
that the gift of God, the gift, the free gift could be bought.
What blasphemy to think that you could pay for this glorious,
infinite gift. Now, all who are thirst, and
who have nothing are called upon to take, to seize the water of
life freely. Remember, thirst is the absence
of a necessity. Water's necessary for me. If I'm thirsty, I can't produce
that water from within myself. It must come from without me. I have an absence of reason in
myself that God would give me anything that's good. That's
good because he doesn't need a reason in me or you to give. You see, he gives because he
is the giver. He gives because he delights
to give. He gives because his resources
are such that when he gives, it doesn't take away from his
stores. You see, it's more blessed to give than to receive. And God is the more blessed one.
He's going to be more blessed than me or you. He's the giver.
We're the receiver. Romans 8, 32 says, he that spared
not his own son, Now what came to my mind when
I thought about that? Do you remember the words of
the Lord from the cross? I thirst. Nobody ever thirsted like the
Lord Jesus Christ. Yes, it was a physical thirst,
but it was much more than that. He had been cut off from his
father. He was in utter darkness as the
sinner substitute, and he cried out, I thirst. And because of his thirst, every
thirsty soul was called upon to come to him and drink. If any man thirst, any man, let
him come to me and drink. Gift. gift. That's what I need. I need him
to give me things. I can't earn them. I don't have
them by way of entitlement. The only way I can have anything
from the Lord is if he freely gives it to me. And the first
thing I thought of is the gift of his love. You know, I think
it's amazing that men just think, well, sure, God loves everybody.
Kind of like it's his obligation and it's everybody's by way of
entitlement. What sad people think that way.
Sadly, that's the way we all naturally think. What high views
we have of ourselves. What low views we have of God.
Of course God ought to love me. Why? Why? Scripture still says, for God
so loved the world. that he gave his only begotten son hosea chapter
14 verse 3 says behold i will love them freely freely and what
that means is god doesn't have to have a reason in me to love
now understand this is not talking about unconditional love because
there's no such thing i hate that thought I want God to love
me unconditionally. I want him to love me just the
way I am. If he did that, he'd cease to
be God. He can't love you just the way you are. He's holy. He's
righteous. He's altogether pure. There's
no such thing as unconditional love. Remember, the love of God
is in Christ Jesus, our Lord. If God loves me, It's not because
I deserve to be loved or because God loves me unconditionally,
but in Christ, I draw out the Father's love. Does the Father
love Christ? If I'm in Christ, the Father
loves me. Is Christ lovely to the Father? If I'm in Christ,
I'm lovely to the Father. It ain't no unconditional love.
He loves me as I am in Christ, but as far as any merit, personal
merit in me, it is unconditional. Because it's conditioned in Christ,
not in me. He said, I will love them freely.
Oh, to be loved by God. You know, if God loves you, that
means he's for you. If God be for us, who can be against us? Behold, I'll love them freely. Now don't think that God gave
his son to make a way to love. God gave his son because he did
love and because he does love. God is love. And everybody in here ought to
be so encouraged. He loves freely, freely. You thirst for God's love? Means
you want him to love you? You want him to love you and
you want, well, his love is free. We read in the scriptures in
Romans 5, 17 of the gift of righteousness, the free gift, the free gift
of righteousness. Now we don't normally think of
righteousness as being a gift, do we? But it is. It's the gift
of God, the free gift of righteousness. I thirst for righteousness. That
means it's something I need. It's something I cannot produce.
And it's something I want. I thirst to have righteousness
before God. Well, he gives it. It's a gift. And understand this, when God
gives you something, it's yours. And he never takes it back. Romans
11 29 says the gifts and the callings of God are without repentance. He never changes his mind. And
have you ever had somebody give you something and then they take
it back? Well, they never really gave it to you. There were some
kind of strings attached that you didn't read the bill, so
they take it back. That wasn't a gift. When God gives something,
it becomes yours. Now the gift of righteousness
is justification. Being justified freely. Romans 3, 24, freely, without
a cause in me, without a reason in me, having been justified
freely by His grace, through the redemption that's in Christ
Jesus. Justification, being without
fault before God. Standing before God's holy law
without guilt, without sin, perfect, that's a free gift. Anybody that's thirsty for it,
let him come. Are you thirsty to have his righteousness
given freely to you? Then you're called upon to take
that gift. In Romans chapter 6 verse 23,
Paul said, the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God, there
it is, the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our
Lord. Now what is eternal life? I know
it's the gift of God. Is eternal life not going to
hell? Well, that's part of it. I sure don't want to go to hell,
do you? I mean, I don't want to go to hell. I want to be preserved
from that. Is it not being annihilated and living forever? Yeah, that's
part of it too. But that's really not what it is. Turn to John
chapter 17. John chapter 17. This is the
Lord's great high priestly prayer for His people. And He says in
verse 2, As thou hast given Him power, authority over all flesh, This makes me happy to think
about this. Everybody is under his thumb. Everybody's in his
hand. Presidents, paupers, princes,
nobodies, somebodies, whoever they are, he's got power over
all flesh. He's got power over my flesh
and he's got power over your flesh. That means you and I are
in his hand. Our eternal destiny is up to
him. What do you think of that? Whatever happens to you, it ain't
up to you. It's up to him. Thou has given him power over
all flesh that he should give, there it is, give, give eternal
life to as many as thou has given him. And this is life eternal. that they might know thee." Now
here's what eternal life is. If you want to know what eternal
life is, this is life eternal, that they might know thee. The
only true God and Jesus Christ whom thou hast sent. Now there's eternal life. The
wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life.
What is eternal life? It's knowing God. where I actually
know Him, where He's my Father, He's my friend, He's my Lord,
He's my Savior, He's my all. I know Him and He knows me. Now what does it take to have
this eternal life? This is the life of God in the
soul. This is being a partaker of the divine nature. This has
been giving a new heart and a new spirit. We actually know God.
You're not ignorant of Him. You know Him and He knows you.
What's that take? God the Holy Spirit. We read
in the scriptures of the gift of the Spirit. Turn with me to
Luke chapter 11. I need God the Holy Spirit so
I can know God. I can't know God without His
Spirit. In Luke chapter 11, beginning in verse 5, and he said unto
them, which of you shall have a friend? and shall go unto him
at midnight, and saying to him, friend, lend me three loaves.
For a friend of mine in his journey has come to me, and I have nothing
to say before him. And he from within shall answer and say,
trouble me not. The door is now shut, and my
children are with me in bed. I can't rise and give thee."
Now, you can picture that scenario. You're in bed. Everybody's in
bed. And somebody comes and knocks at your door at midnight, wakes
you up, and they want Bread? I mean, get it somewhere else.
I'm already in bed. I remember one time somebody
knocked on my window at three o'clock in the morning. Backpacked
up, wanted to talk to me about something. I thought, couldn't
it wait till tomorrow? Now, if anybody ever needs to
talk to me at three o'clock in the morning, feel free to call.
I'm not saying, I mean, if it's, but make sure it's worth it.
This one, this one. But here he is. Knock it on the door. I need
three loaves of bread. No, no, no. I'm going to bed. Leave, get it somewhere else.
Trouble me not, the door's now shut and my children are with
me in bed. I cannot rise and give thee. I say unto you though
he'll not rise and give him because he's a friend, yet because of
his importunity. I said I was in bed. I need bread.
Go away. I'm in bed. I need bread. Go
away. Whatever you want. Here it is.
Here it is. That's what importunity is. Would to God that you and
I would have that importunity. Lord, I must have mercy. I must
have mercy. Go, I must have mercy. I must have Christ. If I don't
have mercy, it's over for me. Importunity. Verse nine, and
I say unto you, ask. and it shall be given you. Seek,
and you shall find. Knock, and it shall be opened
to you. For everyone that asketh receiveth, and he that seeketh
findeth. And to him that knocketh, it
shall be opened. If a son shall ask bread of any
of you that's a father, will he give him a stone? And you
fathers, you think of your children besides you, and they're hungry.
Give me a piece of bread. Do you give them a rock and just
kind of laugh at them? No. You don't do that. You wouldn't
give them bread, don't you? You wouldn't give them that which
they need. Or if he asks for a fish, will you for a fish give
him a serpent? You're gonna give him a poisonous,
venomous snake when you're asking for? No, you wouldn't do that.
Or if he shall ask for an egg, will you give him a scorpion?
Of course not. If you then, I love the way the
Lord says this. If you then being evil, who's he talking? Yeah, that's
you. That's me. He's talking to people,
isn't he? If you then, being evil, if the
shoe fits, wear it. Would that describe you? If you
then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children,
how much more shall your Heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to
them that ask Him? Well, Lord, I'm asking you, give
the Holy Spirit to me that I might have eternal life, that I might
know thee the only true and living God. If I have eternal life, there
are two things that I know are going to happen. I'm going to
have faith and I'm going to have repentance. That's what scripture
teaches, isn't it? And both of those are called
the gift of God. Ephesians 2, 8, 9 says, For by
grace are you saved through faith, and that not of yourselves, it's
the gift, the free gift of God, not of works, lest any man should
boast. Lord, give me faith. If you can't
come to Christ with faith, come to Christ for faith and ask Him
to give it to you. It's His to give. It's the gift
of God. It's not something you work up.
It's not something you... It's the gift of God. Lord, give
me this faith that I might trust Thy Son only. Christ is exalted,
a Prince and a Savior, for to give repentance to Israel. Lord, give me repentance. Give
me this change of mind, so I don't look to myself for anything,
but I look wholly to you. Give me this change of mind,
faith and repentance, the gift of God. Turn to John chapter four. Here's
where we're going to close. Verse 3, let's begin in verse
1. When therefore the Lord knew
how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more
disciples than John, though Jesus himself baptized not, but his
disciples, he left Judea and departed again unto Galilee.
You know, the Lord's not going to have anything to do with that
kind of thinking. Well, so-and-so baptized more than so-and-so.
So-and-so's more used than so-and-so. You know what the Lord's going
to do when that stuff's going on? He's going to leave. He's not going to have
anything to do with that kind of foolish, religious monstrosity. And he left. He left. But he had a reason for leaving.
Verse four, and he must needs go through Samaria. And the only
reason why he must needs do anything is he must do the father's will.
And there's this poor, worthless sinner there that he came to
save. And that's why he must needs go through Samaria. Then
cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near
to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son, Joseph.
Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus, therefore, being a man,
being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well, and it
was about noon. There cometh a woman of Samaria
to draw water, and everything I've ever read
or heard about this woman. You don't draw water at noon.
You draw water in the morning. You don't go when it's hot. Nobody
will be there when it's hot. It's uncomfortable. Well, that's
why she wanted to be there because nobody would be there. She came
to draw water at noon. You see, this was a woman who
had a reputation as we will go on reading. Verse eight, verse seven. There
cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water. Jesus saith unto
her, give me to drink. For his disciples were gone away
unto the city to buy meat. Then saith the woman of Samaria
unto him, how is it that thou being a Jew askest drink of me? which am a woman of Samaria,
for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans. The Jews
thought the Samaritans were their utter inferiors. Jesus answered and said unto her, if thou knewest the gift, the gift, not something you earn,
something he gives. If thou knewest the gift of God
and who it is that saith to thee, give me to drink. I am the gift
of God. If you knew who I was, if you
knew the free gift of God, here's what you do. You would ask. You'd ask. And he would have
given thee living water. Now, if you knew the gift of
God, if you knew the freeness of this gift, everybody, this
is what folks do who know the gift of God. Here's what they
do. They ask, Lord, give me this gift. Give me this free gift. You know the only way you'll
have it is if he gives it freely. And you know what? Everybody
that asks, he gives it to. If you knew, you'd ask, and he'd
give. Now, if you're not asking right
now, I can tell you why. You know nothing of who Jesus
Christ is and the freeness of the gift. Because if you knew
who He is and how salvation is utterly free, here's what you'd
be doing right now. You'd be asking. And in asking, you'd
be receiving. Verse 11, the woman saith unto
him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep.
From whence then hast thou that living water? Art thou greater
than our father Jacob? She had no idea who she's talking
to, did she? This is the Creator she's speaking to. And she says,
Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank
thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle? Jesus answered
and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall
thirst again." Whatever it is you're thirsting
for in this world, you drink it, it'll taste good, and you'll
thirst again. You'll thirst again. But Whosoever
drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst,
but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of
water springing up into everlasting life. The woman saith unto him,
Sir, give me this water that I thirst not, neither come hither
to draw. She still didn't know what the
Lord was talking about. Jesus saith unto her, go, call
thy husband, and come hither. The woman answered and said,
I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, thou well said I have
no husband, for thou hast had five husbands. And he whom thou
now hast is not thy husband, and that saidst thou truly. Well, the woman said to him,
sir, I perceive thou art a prophet. I mean, obviously you're a prophet.
You wouldn't have known this about me. She didn't deny the truthfulness
of it. I mean, how many people do you
know that have been married five times? Six times, whatever. There's
some issues involved, obviously. Obviously, this woman had some
issues, didn't she? So she begins her religion. Our
Father is worshipped in this mountain, and you say that in
Jerusalem is the place which men ought to worship. Jesus saith
unto a woman, Believe me. The hour cometh when you shall
never yet, you shall neither in this mountain nor yet in Jerusalem
worship the Father you worship, you know not what. We know what
we worship for salvation is of the Jews. But the hour cometh
and now is when the true worshipers shall worship the Father in spirit
and in truth. For the Father seeketh such to
worship Him. God is a spirit. God is spirit. And they that worship Him must
worship Him in spirit and in truth. The woman still didn't
know what he was talking about. It was all Greek to her. And
the woman saith unto him, I know the Messiah comes, which is called
Christ. When he has come, he'll tell
us all things. Jesus saith unto her, I that
speak unto thee, am he. I am, I am the Messiah. Now, the Lord said, the water
that I give you, will cause you to never thirst. Now what is
this thing of never thirsting? Because I've got to be honest, I always feel thirsty. I'm not
just talking about physical thirst. I'm talking about, I'm never,
to never thirst is to be satisfied. And I am not satisfied with myself. I'm not. I'm not satisfied with
myself in any way. I'm not satisfied with anything
about me. I'm not satisfied with this sermon. So much less, so much. I'm not satisfied. I'll tell you what I am satisfied
with. I am satisfied to be saved by Christ. And I'm not looking
for anything else. I'm not thirsting for anything
else. I am satisfied to be saved by Him without any contribution
to me. Do you know I find complete satisfaction
in that? I really do. I'm not... God is
satisfied with Christ. He's satisfied with what he did.
God's not looking for anything else. Me neither. Now that's the well
of water springing up. Complete satisfaction to be saved
by His grace, by His righteousness, by His blood. Are you thirsty? Come take the water of life freely. How free is the gospel? Beloved, it's the only thing
there is that's free. And it's absolutely free. It's free to
all who have nothing to pay. And it's unattainable to those
who have something they can offer. The Lord said to his disciples,
freely you've received. freely give. Let's pray.
