What does the Bible say about the presence of the Lord?

The Bible teaches that God's presence is everywhere and especially with His people, offering comfort and assurance.

The scripture clearly affirms that the presence of the Lord is omnipresent; as stated in Psalms, 'If I ascend to heaven, You are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, You are there' (Psalm 139:8). This illustrates that there is nowhere we can escape God’s presence. Moreover, God's presence is promised to be especially with His people, offering comfort and support. Hebrews 13:5 declares, 'For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you,”' which reassures believers that God is close to them in their times of need. This understanding encourages Christians to rely on His constant presence regardless of their circumstances.

Psalm 139:8, Hebrews 13:5

How do we know God's presence is with us?

We know God's presence is with us through His promises and the personal experiences of His people.

The assurance of God's presence comes from His unwavering promises throughout scripture. As affirmed in Isaiah 43:1-2, God declares, 'Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are Mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you.' This passage underscores the personal relationship God has with His people, where He assures them of His presence in difficulty. Additionally, many individuals share personal testimonies of feeling God's presence during trials, prayers, or worship, providing experiential affirmations that complement scriptural promises. Believers can be confident that when they gather in His name, as stated in Matthew 18:20, 'For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.'

Isaiah 43:1-2, Matthew 18:20

Why is the manifested presence of God important for Christians?

The manifested presence of God brings healing, transformation, and draws people to Him.

The manifested presence of God is vital because it brings about significant changes in the lives of believers and even non-believers. According to Luke 5:17, 'The power of the Lord was present to heal them.' This power is transformative; when He manifests His presence, it leads to physical, emotional, and spiritual healings. Furthermore, the manifested presence of God compels individuals to acknowledge their need for Him, fostering repentance and faith. The preaching of the Gospel under the influence of His presence becomes effective, leading people to either believe or reject the truth, as seen in the responses to Christ's ministry. This powerful manifestation stirs hearts, igniting a desire for righteousness and a deeper relationship with God.

Luke 5:17

How does God's presence help Christians overcome fear?

God's presence reassures believers, eliminating fear by providing comfort and support.

The presence of God alleviates fear by reminding believers of His sovereignty and love. Hebrews 13:6 states, 'So we can confidently say, “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?”' This confidence stems from the reassurance that God is always with us, helping us face adversities. Furthermore, Isaiah 41:10 encourages believers not to fear because God upholds them with His righteous right hand, emphasizing that His presence strengthens and protects. When Christians dwell on these truths and look to God in prayer and worship, they experience His comforting presence, allowing them to confront their fears with faith.

Hebrews 13:6, Isaiah 41:10

What should Christians do to experience the presence of God in their lives?

Christians can experience God's presence through prayer, worship, and studying His Word.

To experience the presence of God, Christians are encouraged to engage in prayer, worship, and the study of Scripture. In James 4:8, believers are invited, 'Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.' This passage emphasizes that a sincere effort to connect with God through prayer opens the door for His presence. Worship, whether corporate or personal, creates an environment where believers can encounter God deeply. Additionally, immersing oneself in the Word of God allows individuals to understand His nature and promises, fostering intimacy. As believers reflect on His attributes and remain in communion with Him, they are more likely to perceive and experience His transformative presence in their day-to-day lives.

Luke chapter 5, and let's begin
reading in verse 12. My text is in verse 17 and in
verse 15, 15 and 17, but I want to begin reading at the context
here in verse 12. Luke 5, 12, And it came to pass,
when he was in a certain city, behold, a man full of leprosy. who seeing Jesus fell on his
face and besought him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou can
make me clean. And he put forth his hand and
touched him, saying, I will be thou clean. And immediately the
leprosy departed from him. And he charged him to tell no
man But go and show yourself to the priest, and offer for
your cleansing according as Moses commanded for testimony unto
them. But so much the more went there
a fame abroad of him. He charged him to tell no man,
but the more he charged him to tell no man, the more there went
a fame abroad of him, and great multitudes came together to hear. and to be healed of him, by him,
of their infirmities. And he withdrew himself into
the wilderness and prayed, and it came to pass on a certain
day, as he was teaching, that there were Pharisees and doctors
of the law set in by, which were come out of every town of Galilee,
and Judea, and Jerusalem, and the power of the Lord was present
to heal them. And behold, men brought unto
him a man on a bed, which was taken with a palsy. And they
sought means to bring him in and to lay him before him. And
when they could not find the way they might bring him in because
of the multitude, they went up into the housetop and led him
down through the tiling with his bed, his couch, into the
mist before Jesus. And when he saw their faith,
he said unto him, Man, thy sins are forgiven thee. And the scribes
and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this which speaketh
blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God
alone? And when Jesus perceived their
thoughts, he answered and said unto them, What reason ye in
your hearts? Whether it is easy to say, which
is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee, or to say, Rise
up and walk. But that you may know that the
Son of Man has power upon earth to forgive sins, He said to the
sick of the posse, I say unto thee, Arise, take up thy couch,
and go unto thine house. And immediately he rose up before
them, and took up that whereon he lay, and departed to his own
house, glorifying God. And they were all amazed, and
they glorified God, and were filled with fear, saying, We
have seen strange things today." In verse 17 is the title of our
message this morning. It came to pass on a certain
day, as he was teaching, there were Pharisees and doctors of
the law setting by, come out of every town of Galilee and
Judea and Jerusalem, and the power of the Lord was present
to fill them. The powerful presence, the powerful
presence of the Lord Jesus Christ. And when we think about His presence,
there are three distinctions that we must make in the presence
of our Lord God, the Lord Jesus Christ. First of all, we have
to know this and remember this, that His presence is everywhere. There is no place this morning
where the presence of the Lord God is not. There is no hiding
place, David said, from it. If I make my bed in hell, He's
there. If I take the wings of the morning
and dwell in the uttermost parts of the earth, He's there. If
I go up to heaven, He's there. He's every place. The prophet
said the eyes of the Lord are in every place, beholding the
good and the evil. He fills this earth. He fills
heaven. He sees everything. He knows
everything because He's His presence is everywhere. And secondly,
what we need to know and understand is this, that the presence of
the Lord Jesus Christ is especially with His people. In particular,
with His children. The Lord promises this, does
He not? Listen to Hebrews chapter 13.
Let your conversation be without covetousness. And be content
with such things as you have, for the Lord hath said, I will
never leave you, nor forsake you, so that we may boldly say,
The Lord is my helper. And I will not fear what man
can do unto me." Living in the faith of His promised presence
will deliver us a great deal from this covetousness that is
within us, seeking this world and its temporal advantages.
It will deliver us from the fear of man and the terror that he
can bring on us. His presence is with us. We do
not have to live covetous lives. We do not have to live in the
fear and terror of man. I am with Thee. Look over here with me in Isaiah
chapter 43, a very familiar passage. And speaking here of the presence
of the Lord, look at what he said in verse 1 of chapter 43
of Isaiah. But now, thus saith the Lord
that created thee, O Jacob, and he that farmed thee, O Israel,
fear not, for I have redeemed I have redeemed you at a great
cost to myself. I have redeemed you by blood.
And I have called you by your name. I have called you out of
darkness into light. I have called you to myself."
And what did he say? Thou art mine. Now, have you experienced that
in your heart? If you are here this morning
and you are a child of God, He is speaking to you. He redeemed
you 2,000 years ago. He delivered you from the power
of darkness. And He said to you, you're mine. You're mine. Now, what's He going
to assure you of? Verse 2, when you pass through
the waters, I will be with you. I will be with you. Is He always
with His children? Yes, He is. In a special way,
He's with His children. When God sends the Spirit of
His Son into our hearts, you know something? He'll never depart. I will give you another Comforter,
and He shall abide with you for how long? Forever. Forever. And when we live in
the faith of that, when we come to these waters that are so deep,
we don't have to fear. Because He said they won't overflow
you, because I am with you. And look at what else He said.
When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, neither
shall the flame kindle upon you. And here's the reason. I'm the
Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel. I'm your Savior. In verse
4, since you were precious in my sight, You have been honorable,
I have loved thee, therefore I gave men for thee and people
for thy life. Fear not, for I am with thee."
Isn't that comforting? Isn't that comforting to know?
He's with you wherever you are, whatever circumstances that you
find yourself in, He's with you. David said, though I walk through
the valley of the shadow of death. I really don't know what that
means. Some say that's severe trials in which the Lord has
withdrawn His light from us. Some say it's living in the shadow
of physical death. I don't know for sure what that
is. But I know this much. David said, I won't fear when
I'm there, for thou art with me. Isn't that enough to comfort
you? When Jonah went down in those
deep waters, you know the Lord was there. He went down to the
bottom of the mountains. But the Lord was there. He said,
I cried and He heard me. And we know He was there because
He spoke to the fish. And He went up to the top and
vomited Jonah out. Remember the three Hebrew children?
They were in the fire, weren't they? They were in the fire. But did it hurt them? No smell
of smoke on them. They sustained no hurt. And the
great mighty King looked in the fiery furnace and said, did we
not throw three men in there? I see four. I see four. And the fourth one is like unto
the Son of God. His presence. His presence. When
He comes to set up His throne in our conscience, in our hearts,
He'll never leave. He'll never leave. And that's
so comforting to live in the faith of that. This is what the
covenant says. I will make an everlasting covenant
within. And here's what it says. Here's
the covenant. And you stopped a little bit
short when you read it there today, but he said, he said,
he said, talked about the sun coming up, talking about the
stars, the ordinances of heaven. And he said, he said, if these
ordinances can be made void, then this everlasting covenant
will be made void. If you can stop the sun from
coming up, then my covenant is finished. But I tell you, nobody's
been able to do that ever. This covenant stands fast. It's
certain. And here's what it says, I will
not turn away from them. I won't do it. He won't do it. Every individual believer has the presence of the Lord
Jesus Christ in his heart. And the church, the church, when
the Lord was ready to go back to heaven, He promised His apostles,
He promised that early church, and the promise was not only
to them, but it's to us, that we would have His presence as
a church. He said, you go and you teach
all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son,
and the Holy Spirit, and lo, I am with you always, even to
the end of the world. That wasn't just for those apostles
and the early church. That's for the church throughout
all ages. He's with His church. You and
I can be assured this morning, brothers and sisters, If we have
come here in His name, if we come here out of love to Him,
and we believe His gospel, and we preach and teach His truth,
He's here. He's with us. And He's not only
with this congregation, He's with every congregation that
believes His gospel and loves Him. He'll never leave His church. He never will. This is one of
the things that men of Larry do not like about landmarkism. Those people who say the Baptist
only is the true church, and there's no really true church
apart from the Baptist. What is that saying? Only the
Baptist have his presence? We're not Baptist, are we? At
least not in name. Does that mean we don't have
his presence? No. If you and I could come here
this morning and somebody could convince us that the Lord Jesus
Christ is not in our midst as a congregation, you know what?
You convince me of that, I'll never darken those doors again.
I don't want to be with a group of people, I don't care who they
are or what they are, if Christ is not in our midst. His presence is here. We don't
always know it, do we? I love to live in the faith of
His presence. But He's here. He's here. This brings me to the third point
about His presence. His presence is everywhere. His
presence is, secondly, with His people, His individual people,
and with His church. And thirdly, here's something
else about the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ. And that is
the manifestation of His presence, the power of His presence when
He makes His presence known and real. And you see that here in
the last sentence of verse 17. And the power of the Lord was
present to heal them. Here's the difference, isn't
it? Here's the difference. We can live in the faith of His
presence. We can come and go as individuals. We can gather as a congregation. And we can be assured that His
presence is with us. But here's the difference. When
He manifests His presence, when He makes His presence known,
then things change. Clark, throw those things away
or put them in your pocket or something. Poor child, she's
simple. That's the difference. When He
manifests His presence, that's when things begin to take place. Sometimes the Lord went to places.
We're told He went up to Tyre and Sidon. But all the time He
was there present, He only healed this one child that was possessed
with devils. If my memory serves me correctly,
that's the only one He healed. He was there when he went into
Nazareth where he was raised up. The Scripture says he didn't
do many mighty works there, laid his hands on a few sick folks.
So he may be present in a place, but never manifest himself, never
do very much. But when he does what he did
here in our text, and so often that he did, he manifest the
power of his presence. That's when you see mighty things
happen. This is what you and I pray,
brothers and sisters, today. This is what I long for more
than anything else. As a preacher, as a congregation
with you, I long for this, for the Lord to visit us in the power
of His presence. to make His presence known. That's my prayer. That's what
I long for. And I hope you do, too. And I
want to show you today some effects of His powerful presence. The Lord had just healed this
leper here, and He told him, don't tell anybody, but his fangs
spread. And notice here what happened
in verse I want to show you about three things here that happened,
and it's attributed to the mighty power of His presence. Look here
what He said in verse 15. So much the more when He charged
him, so much the more His fame spread abroad, and great multitudes
came together. That's the first thing. That's
the first thing. What happened? when the Lord
begins to manifest the power of his presence. I don't understand
this, but this is what happens. You see it in the scriptures,
and you see it in our church history. Multitudes come together. It attracts people. They came
from every place. They came from up in the hill
country. They came from down south. They came from Judea and
Jerusalem. Multitudes came together. You know what breaks my heart
as a pastor? Not you, but you talk to other
pastors, so many pastors in our day, and you know this. You know
what breaks our heart? To see how empty our churches
are. And seemingly, we make all kinds
of excuses And maybe there is some legitimate excuses, but
I tell you the remedy for it, and it's very obvious, is this. When the Lord begins to manifest
the power of His presence, it draws people. It gathers them
together. You remember when the Lord sent
Ezekiel out to preach to those valley of dry bones. And they
were just scattered out every place. And the Lord said, preach
to these bones. And He said there were many of
them. But when He began to preach, they came together. Those bones
came together. And that's what happens when
the Lord begins to manifest the power of His presence. Remember
the day of Pentecost? When the Holy Spirit came in
power. That was Christ, wasn't it? You say, well, that was the
Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is Christ. It
was Him coming back in power, giving on His presence. And there
were 2,000 people gathered together. In Acts chapter 3, there was
5,000 people gathered together. Wasn't that amazing? But that's
what happens. I remember when the Lord began
to deal with Cornelius during Acts chapter 10, the Gentile,
the centurion. and appeared to him by this angel
and said, you send to Joppa and tell Peter to come down here
and he's going to tell you words whereby you can be saved. I'm
getting ready to visit you. That's what he said. I'm going
to visit you. And the Lord went back up there
to Joppa where Peter was and he seen this vision. The Lord
was talking to him. And the Lord said, you go down
there and you preach to those people. And you remember what happened
when Peter got down there. And he went in the door. The Scripture
says many people were gathered together. So don't you and I need His powerful
presence? Wouldn't it be wonderful if He,
we know He's here. We know that Jesus Christ is
here in His Spirit. But wouldn't it be wonderful
if He began to manifest I love what he said here. The
power of the Lord was present. The power of the Lord was present. That's the first thing. And the
second thing is this. Look at the second thing. And in verse fifteen, And great
multitudes came together. Look at this. They not only came
together, but they came together to hear. They came together to
hear. Now, here's the amazing thing
about this. Even our Lord's enemies came. There in verse 17, the
Pharisees and the scribes, His enemies came together to hear. They were compelled to come to
see what He was saying. They didn't believe it. They
even hated it. But isn't it amazing that when
the power of the Lord is present, they hear it. They hear it. I tell you one of the most discouraging
things when you preach sometimes is when somebody, I remember
when I was preaching on the radio and some guy called me or seen
me out of somewhere, a freewheeler to be And he said, I've been
listening to you on the radio. He said, you know me and you
believe the same thing. I was like, my soul, you ain't hearing
a thing I'm saying. And you know people are like
that, aren't they? And you can get up and you say, boy, I've
got to make this clearer. I've got to put some force behind
this. And you do that and still people
don't hear you. I know a man that sat under Henry
Mahan, of all people, for 13 years. And one day he heard what
he was saying. Thirteen years. You know something? That don't happen when the Lord
visits in His power. People hear. There's just something
about it. When He comes in power, people
hear. They hear. And that's what we're
told here. Here in verses 18 through verse
21. These enemies of our Lord, these
Pharisees and scribes, they were brought to this point. They either had to acknowledge
that Jesus Christ was God the Savior, the forgiver of sins,
or they had to utterly reject Him as a blasphemer. But I tell
you one thing, they couldn't remain indifferent. His presence
brings men to a decision, doesn't it? His presence makes men hear
what's being said. They may not be saved by it,
but they hear it. They may not believe it, but
they hear it. They hear it. Some get glad,
and some get mad. But I tell you, when the Lord
visits His Word with power, they at least hear it. And that's
what we want, is it not? We have had people here, bless
their hearts, and it's fine. It's fine. I don't mean to in any way discourage them from
coming or anything. But they haven't heard. They
haven't heard. And there's a remedy for that.
And we pray to that end. And it's the presence of the
Lord Jesus Christ visiting us. The power of the Lord was present.
Let me give you one example of this. And this happened all the
time in the Lord's ministry. When He preached, people understood
what He was saying. They understood it to this point.
You're either going to have to accept it in faith and bow to
it or utterly reject it and go away. One of the two. One of
the two. You ain't going to sit there
indifferent. You remember when the Lord Jesus was preaching
one of the greatest sermons, I think the greatest sermon He
ever preached, if you could say that, in John chapter 6. Remember that great sermon? And
He dealt with so many different subjects on the sovereignty of
God. He said, all that the Father
gives to me, Now there's the hope of a fallen humanity. I
say it over and over again, but there's a hope. There's the only
hope of a fallen humanity. The Father has given a great
host of men to His Son. And what are they going to do?
They shall come to Me. They shall come to Me. That's
what He preached to those people. And He went on to make this statement
to them. He says, You cannot come to Me except My Father which
sent Me draw you. And He gives this precious promise.
Listen to this precious promise. You talk about encouragement.
He said this. It's written in the Prophets.
They shall all be taught of God. Every man that hath heard and
learned of the Father, what does he do? He comes to Me. How many times have I preached
that? And nobody even heard what I
said. They just went over their heads like water on a duck's
back. Buddy, they heard when he preached it. And he went on
to say this, I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If any man eat of this bread,
listen, he shall live forever. And the bread that I will give
is my flesh, my broken flesh, my crucified flesh to atone for
sin. That's this bread. And you eat
of this bread, you'll live forever. My flesh is meat indeed and my
blood is drink indeed. You eat my flesh and you drink
my blood, you have eternal life. And I'll raise you up at the
last day. And you eat my flesh and drink my blood and I dwell
in you and you dwell in me. What union! What a message that
was! And these fellows that were listening
to them, here's what they said. This isn't an hard saying. You
say, Bruce, they didn't hear it. Oh, yes, they did. Yes, they
did. If they hadn't heard, they'd
have never said this is a hard saying. It was hard for them
because it had too much grace in it. It had too much sovereignty
in it. It had too much Christ alone
in it. They said, we can't take this. But you know something?
They were brought to the point. You either bow, you bow in love,
you bow in grace, you bow at His feet, you own Him, or you
go away never to return again. And that's what they did, didn't
it? We can't take this. We're offended
in this. But you know what the rest of
them said? The Lord Jesus turned to the apostles and He said,
this would be a good time for you to go away. You could slip
right away, Bill, in the crowd. Nobody can blame you so much
because everybody else is doing it. What will you do, Peter?
Will you go away? Oh, what did he say? He heard
too, didn't he? He heard too. See, that's the
thing. When the power of the Lord's
presence is here, people hear. Some believe not, but thank God
others believe. Some get mad and upset and they
go away, but others say, Lord, these are words of life to me. I've never heard anything like
it. I've heard it, and I love it, and I believe it. You're
the Son of God, the living God. Look here in my text again. Look
back down here in verse 25 and verse 26. This poor man, the
Lord had healed, spoke to him and said, Your sins be forgiven
you. He departed to his own house
glorifying God. And a great company of the others,
in verse 26, they were amazed and they glorified God. They
saw and they heard what was done. But boy, these Pharisees. Look
at them in verse 21. The scribes and the Pharisees
began to reason, saying, Who is this which speaketh blasphemy?
Who can forgive sins but God the Lord? You got some glad and
you got some mad. But they all heard. They heard. Isn't that what we long for today?
We long for men to hear. I'd rather you get mad at me.
That's what I'm getting at here. You know, we had the little fire
up here at Christmas time. You know, I'm sort of glad that
happened. I'm glad somebody said, I hate it. I don't like God's
elect in love. I'd rather them to know and hear
than to go off indifferent and say, I have no idea what he's
saying. Lord, give us your presence. If people believe it and they
bow to it, we'll glorify you. But if they hate you because
of it and persecute us because of it, that's fine too, at least
a year. And it's this way the gospel
is supposed to be. We're not supposed to be able
to preach the gospel. The church is not supposed to
be in this world without conflict, without separation. If they've hated me, they'll
hate you. If they hate my message, they'll
hate your message. Brothers and sisters, there's
not supposed to be peace between the church and the world. The
gospel is offensive to the world. And if they're not hearing it,
you know what we need? We don't need greater preachers.
We don't need to send our preachers off to the seminar and educate
them. We've got some good preachers today. We've got some good preaching
going on today. If the world is not hearing our
message, you know what the remedy is. Lord, visit us. Lord Jesus, we covet, we crave,
we long for you to make yourself known in your church. I don't want anybody to sit under
my ministry and go to hell. I don't want anybody to sit under
my ministry and not know what I'm preaching. I want to know. I hope somebody
today is brought to a decision. I mean a turning point. It's
either bow to Christ or I'm leaving this place. I'm coming to Christ
today to be saved from my sin. I'm never coming back. If I've
never loved the Lord before, Lord, give me grace to love you
now or I'm leaving here. One of the two. One of the two. And I tell you what will bring
men to that when the Lord is present. And lastly and thirdly,
here in verse 15, look at this. Multitudes came together, they
came together to hear, they heard, and look at this, and to be healed
by Him of their infirmity. You got any infirmities? Man,
aren't we full of infirmities. Oh, my. I could name a few. Had a while, and you wouldn't
get upset with me. There's confidence in me. I could
tell you some of mine. I'll tell you a couple that I've
got. Unbelief. There's nothing that plagues
my soul like the unbelief that I find in my heart. It turns
my blessings to cursing. It turns my joy to heaviness.
It turns my laughter to mourning. It plagues me. Unbelief. Pride. Pride. Would you ever dream that
a fellow that looked so humble could be so full of pride? But
I tell you, I've got it. Enfirmities. Enfirmities. Sometimes I carry them, sometimes
you carry them, week after week, month after month. But I tell
you sometimes, sometimes, when you come in here, because the
Lord was present here in a special way, a song was sung. And through the singing of the
song, He came and healed your infirmity. Have you ever had
Him to do that? Through the reading of the Scriptures,
He came in His presence with power, and He healed your heart. I'm not so much concerned about
this old body. There were not anyway. It's the
heart, the infirmities of our souls. Here in chapter 4, in
verse 18, listen, the Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because
He hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor, He hath
sent me to heal the broken-hearted. And I tell you, we have a lot
of infirmities and a lot of heart problems, heaviness, temptations,
trials, and we need healing. And He can heal us. David said
this about it. He said, Lord, be merciful unto
me. and heal my soul, for I have
sinned against thee." Don't sin. Don't sin in us. Open up wounds. Doesn't it bruise
us, our souls, our very spirits? Well, David said, Lord, heal
me. Heal me. How often we backslide,
do we not? You say, Bruce, I don't backslide.
Not in your heart. You don't fall into sin in your
heart. You never stray in prayer. You're always very attentive
upon the things of the Lord. You never go astray in your heart. Oh, how often, brothers and sisters,
we do. It's one of our infirmities.
Prone to wonder. Lord, I feel it. I feel it. The children of God, even those
who are the nearest to Him, feel their proneness to wonder. It's
not infirmity. But listen to what He says. I
will heal their backsliding. I will love them freely. I've got an article coming out
in the Bulletin next week. It's on verse 8 of chapter 5.
Look at this. Look at this. Look at the backwardness
of Peter here when he had sinned against the Lord, and look what
he asked Him to do. The Lord just let these disciples catch
a whole bunch of fish, and their nets were breaking. They put
all their fish in two other boats, and the fish began to sink. You
never caught that kind of fish this weekend, did you? This week?
You probably never will. You know why they caught them?
The Lord was there. The Lord said to Peter, He said,
Peter, launch out of the deep, throw out your nets, and you're
going to catch some fish. Peter said, Lord, we've fished
all night. We've fished all night. I can just see Peter saying that,
Lord, we've fished all night. I just don't want to do this,
Lord. But he noticed the Lord was looking right at him. And
he said, Lord, I will. I will. Nevertheless, it's Your
Word, I will. He cast his net out, and he caught
so many fish. It filled two ships and they
were sinking. And verse 8 is what Peter says,
When Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' feet, saying, Depart
from me, for I am a sinful man. I can understand him saying that.
I've said that. They said Martin Luther. He used
to lift his fist towards heaven and said, Lord, damn me, just
damn me. I'm so wicked, damn me. But you
know, that's not the right way to pray. I know why we pray that. I prayed
it myself. Lord, I'm worthy. Just put me
in hell, if you will. But here's the better way to
pray. Not, Lord, depart from me, but,
Lord, heal me. Lord, come to me. Lord, let me
come to you. Here's my awful infirmity. I've
not even believed you. Look how I've sinned against
you. But heal me. There's no infirmity that you
and I have, brothers and sisters. I don't care what it is, that
He is not willing and able to heal. Look here at a couple of places.
Look here at Matthew chapter 4. We'll close with a couple
of scriptures. Look at Matthew chapter 4. We're so backward in Matthew
chapter 4, look down in verse 23. We're so backward about coming
to the Lord and just telling Him of our infirmities. We have
a tendency to think that's not the time to come. But our text
says He healed them of their infirmities. Is He not a physician? Should we stay away from Him
because we feel our infirmities? No, that's the time to come.
And look what He said in Matthew chapter 4 and verse 23, And Jesus
went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogue, and preaching
the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness
and all manner of disease among the people." What manner of disease
has set up in your soul? Did he ever look upon a disease
that he couldn't heal? Did anybody ever come to him
with a disease and he said, Did He ever try to heal one of them
and fail? They came to Him with all manner
of diseases, all manner of sicknesses, and He healed them all. Look at one more place. Look
in chapter 9, Matthew, in verse 35. Look in verse 35, Matthew
9. And Jesus went about all the
cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching
the gospel of the kingdom, and look at this, healing every sickness
and every disease among the people. If you don't want to come to
it, dear child of God, to be healed, if you're going to be
so backward about it, you want to carry it and suffer with it,
go ahead. Go ahead. But I tell you, it's on record
that there's nothing he cannot heal. One more. I thought of one more
and we'll close with this. Look in Malachi, verse chapter
4. Malachi chapter 4. The last book
in the Old Testament. And look in verse 1 and 2. Now look at chapter 4. Look in
verse 1. For behold, the days come that
shall burn as in an oven. Oh, eternal torment. Ain't that
awful? The fire of hell. An oven. And all the proud, yea, and all
that do wickedly shall be a stubble. A stubble and a fire. And the
day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the Lord of hosts,
that it shall leave them neither root nor branch." Judgment upon
the wicked, upon the unbelievers, rebels. I ain't going to bow. Yeah, you will. Yeah, you will. You'll bow, and you'll burn,
and you'll suffer for all eternity. God will root out of you, not
only the stem, but He'll get right down to the root. Right
down to your being, to your soul, to your spirit. And He'll torment
you. God will do that. Look what He
says in verse 2. But unto you, unto you that fear
My name, shall the Son of righteousness arise. I think that will be a
wonderful day. He's coming. He's coming. He's
coming. He's going to rise like the sun
in His strength. And look what happens when He
comes again. With healing in His wings. Boy, I tell you now, you talk about
being made whole. There will be no imprimatur left
when He comes again. He's going to cleanse it all.
He's going to remove it all. He's going to make us whole.
This corruptible shall put on him corruption. This mortal shall
put on him mortality. No wonder John said, Come, Lord
Jesus. The power of his presence.
