John 10:32-42
32 Jesus answered them, Many good works have I shewed you from my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me?
33 The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God.
34 Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods?
35 If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken;
36 Say ye of him, whom the Father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, Thou blasphemest; because I said, I am the Son of God?
37 If I do not the works of my Father, believe me not.
38 But if I do, though ye believe not me, believe the works: that ye may know, and believe, that the Father is in me, and I in him.
39 ¶ Therefore they sought again to take him: but he escaped out of their hand,

And went away again beyond Jordan into the place where John at first baptized; and there he abode.
41 And many resorted unto him, and said, John did no miracle: but all things that John spake of this man were true.
42 And many believed on him there.
What does the Bible say about believing in Jesus?

The Bible teaches that many believed in Jesus as the Son of God, especially those ordained to eternal life.

The Bible emphasizes that belief in Jesus is a divine act initiated by God. In John 10:42, it is noted that many believed on Him, highlighting the reality that faith in Christ is granted to those whom God has chosen. Acts 13:48 reinforces this by stating, 'And as many as were ordained to eternal life believed.' This means that belief is not merely a human decision but a miraculous work of God's sovereign grace that transforms hearts and draws individuals to Christ for salvation.

John 10:42, Acts 13:48

How do we know Jesus is God?

Jesus's deity is confirmed through His miraculous works, fulfillment of Scripture, and affirmations from God the Father.

The deity of Jesus Christ is clearly demonstrated in several ways according to Scripture. First, His miracles and works provide a powerful testimony to His divine nature; as stated in John 10:37, His works testify of Him. Additionally, Jesus Himself claimed unity with the Father ('I and my Father are one' - John 10:30), which the Jewish leaders understood as a claim to divinity. The Scriptures affirm His deity as well, as seen in Hebrews 1:8 where God the Father addresses Jesus as God. Moreover, the acknowledgment of Jesus as God is affirmed by individuals throughout the New Testament, underscoring that recognizing His divine nature is essential for salvation.

John 10:30, John 10:37, Hebrews 1:8

Why is sovereign grace important for Christians?

Sovereign grace highlights that salvation is entirely the work of God, ensuring that it is secure and not dependent on human effort.

Sovereign grace is a foundational principle in Reformed theology that emphasizes God's absolute authority and power in the salvation of sinners. This doctrine teaches that God unconditionally elects certain individuals to salvation, as seen in Romans 9:11-13, ensuring that grace is not based on any foreseen merit or works. This truth encourages believers by affirming that their salvation is secure, as God’s will cannot be thwarted. Moreover, understanding sovereign grace cultivates a deep sense of humility and dependence on Christ, leading to a genuine expression of gratitude as individuals recognize that they are saved by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone.

Romans 9:11-13, Ephesians 2:8-9

What is the significance of Jesus's miracles?

Jesus's miracles serve as evidence of His divine authority and confirm His identity as the Son of God.

The miracles of Jesus are not merely acts of compassion or display of power; they serve a profound purpose in affirming His identity as the Son of God. Throughout His ministry, He performed miracles publicly, attesting to His divine authority as noted in John 10:32-38, where He calls attention to His works as validation of His claims. Furthermore, Jesus's ability to perform such miraculous acts illustrates that He is the ultimate authority over creation, demonstrating His power to heal, raise the dead, and forgive sins. These miracles invite individuals to believe in Him, as they are signs pointing to His divine nature and purpose in providing salvation to His people.

Okay, now John chapter 10. John chapter 10. I'm entitling
the message from the words in verse 42. Many, John 10, 42. Many, many believed on Him. There. Many, many, many, many
believed on Him. That is many, Believe the Lord
Jesus Christ for all of salvation. Now, we're not told the number. We're not told how many are we.
God knows. God knows. The foundation of
God standeth sure, having concealed the Lord, knoweth them that are
His. But we know this. We know who,
we don't know how many, but we know who the many are, don't
we? We know who the many are. In
Acts chapter 13 we read, as many as were ordained to eternal life
believe the gospel. That's who the many, the many
are. His sheep will hear Him. His
sheep will believe Him. Thy people shall be willing in
the day of His power. His sheep will love Him. We love Him because He first
loved us. His sheep will follow Him and His sheep who looked
to the Lord Jesus Christ, the sheep of his hand, the people
of his pasture, the Lord declares, they will never, no, never, no,
never, he said, I'll never leave you, I'll never forsake you,
they'll never perish. Oh, that's good news, that's
good news. We're kept by the power of God.
Now you remember from last week, the Jews, these self-righteous
Jews heard the Lord Jesus Christ preach and declare the gospel
of His sovereign grace. Our Lord said, I told you. He
declared unto them His deity. He said, I and Father, we are
one. He declared His Godhood, that
He is God. And they understood what He said.
They understood what he said. And they revealed the hatred
of their heart by picking up rocks ready to commit what some
call deicide. What in the world is deicide?
Well, you've heard of suicide. You've heard of genocide. Deicide
is the murder of God. And that's what they attempted
to do. They attempted to murder God Almighty. They were ready
to kill God Almighty. You see, the carnal mind is enmity
against God. Don't ever tell me how much all
men love God. We don't. If you love God, it's
only because of the miracle of His grace. Now, in the next verses,
the Lord Jesus Christ is going to give us a four-fold proof
of His deity. fourfold proof of His deity,
that He is indeed God Almighty, that He is indeed worthy of our
faith, that He indeed is the only object of saving faith,
that He indeed is worthy of all honor and worship, that He indeed
is God our Savior, who is able to save to the uttermost in whom
there is no other salvation. Now the first proof he gives
is this, look at verse 10, rather John chapter 10 verse 30, I and
father are one, I and father, the father and the son, they
are one, then the Jews took up stones again to stone him and
the Lord answered many good works. Many good works have I showed
you from my Father. For which of those works do you
stone me? And they answered and said, For
a good work we stone thee not, but for blasphemy, because thou,
being a man, you make yourself God." So the first proof of the
Lord's deity here is the many works that He did. The many works
that He did. Look at verse 37 in the text.
John 10, 37, if I do not the works of my Father, believe ye
not. But if I do, and he did, though you believe me not, believe
the works that you may know, and believe that the Father is
in me, and I in him. The first proof of his deity
is this, the many works that he did. The Lord Jesus Christ
demonstrated that he is God. Demonstrated that he is God.
by the many and mighty and marvelous works that he performed, of which
they could not deny. They were done so openly, publicly,
they could not deny, nor could they discount them. They were
not done in a corner. Let me show you a scripture I
was reading yesterday, turn to John 11, 47. When Lazarus was
raised from the dead, And it was publicly known that he'd
been dead four days, and yet the Lord raised him up. What
are the Jews going to do about this? Look at verse 47, John
11. Then gathered the chief priests
and the Pharisees of the council and said, What do we for this
man do with many miracles? I mean, they couldn't deny it.
Undeniable. His whole public ministry was
filled with miracle upon miracle. Although John the Baptist, it
says in the text, did no miracles, the Lord Jesus Christ did miracle
after miracle after miracle. So much so that it says over
here later on in the book of John that if all the things that
he did, all the miracles he performed, each one were written down, that
the world itself could not contain the whole, could not contain
the books. All the things that he did. We
have just a The first fruit of what he did,
the glory, glorious miracles that he did. His whole public
ministry was filled with miracle upon miracle. The winds and seas
obeyed him. Now who can do that? Behold what
manner of man is this that even the wind and seas obey him. Even
the demon spirits were subject unto him. They said, do you come
to torment us before our time? They recognize Him as God. The
devils believe and tremble. The works that he performed were
works the Father gave him to do, which he always did with
absolute, perfect obedience. Our Lord said, I do always those
things that please my Father. God speaks from heaven and said,
this is my beloved Son to whom I'm well pleased. In Luke chapter
2, we read about the Lord Jesus Christ as a 12-year-old boy in
a temple, told his earthly parents that I must be about my father's
business. In John chapter 4, we read about
the Lord saying, my meat is to do the will of him that sent
me and to finish his work. And then he prayed in John 17,
Father, I've glorified thee on the earth. I finished the work
you gave me to do. And then at Calvary he said,
it is done. In Matthew chapter 11, don't
turn, let me just read this to you. Talking about the many miracles
that He did that show forth and manifest His glory, His deity.
The blind receive their sight. And we can look at this in a
spiritual way. This is what He has done to us.
He's given us eyes to see Him. The lame walk. Remember that
cripple? Lepers are cleansed. And that's
what we are by nature, sinful Lepers were cleansed by the blood
of Christ. The deaf, they hear. The dead,
they're really raised up. You hath he quickened who were
dead. The poor have the gospel preached to them. You see, this
is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation that the Lord
Jesus Christ came to save sinners. I'm the chief one. I'm the chief
sinner. Now these miracles that he did,
they declare his deity, but chiefly the works that he did that declare
his deity is that of accomplishing all of salvation for us. Achieving
and establishing a perfect, justifying righteousness for us. Who alone
can do that? But God Almighty. Completing
and putting away sin, our sin, by the sacrifice of Himself.
Honoring the Law of God for us. Matter of fact, it says in Isaiah
42 that He magnified the Law of God. The Lord is well pleased
for His righteousness sake. He will honor the Law of God.
He will magnify the Law of God for us. Our Lord said, I didn't
come to destroy the law, I came to honor it. And He did that
as my substitute, as my representative. And He gives me that blessed
obedience that He performed, which is established in justifying
a sinner in obeying the law of God. He freely gives that unto
us. In Psalm 92.4 it says, I will
triumph. This is what the believer says,
I will triumph in the work of His hands. I will triumph in
the work of His hands." You see, it's His doing. Salvation is
not something we do for God. Is it? Salvation is not something
a sinner does for God. Salvation is something that God
does for us. Salvation is not something that
happened accidentally. You just didn't bump into the
gospel truth. Salvation, God saves sinners
on purpose, not accident. He saves them on purpose and
His grace, which is an eternal purpose. Now, back to John chapter
10. What did the Jews say about this?
The Lord is demonstrating and telling them that the works that
I do, they prove that I am God, that I and Father, we are one.
The Jews said, well, for good work, we don't stone you for
good works, but for blasphemy, evil speaking, because thou,
being a man, you say you're God. All we see is a man. You say
you're God. The Jews say here, or state here,
they're not opposed to good works. That's what they said. But when
the Lord did mighty miracles on a certain day, on the Sabbath
day, what'd they do? They tried to kill him, didn't
they? Turn over to John chapter 5. They tried to kill him. You
remember when the man at the pool of Bethesda was healed?
John 5 verse 15, the man departed and told the Jews that it was
Jesus who made him whole. You remember the Lord said, take
up your bed and walk? Oh, by the way, it's the Sabbath
day. Let's forget the fact that the man had been paralyzed for
38 years and now he's walking. What a miracle of mercy. And
the man told the Jews that Jesus made him whole. Verse 16, therefore
did the Jews persecute him and sought him, sought to slay him
because he'd done these things on the Sabbath day. Wait a minute.
I thought they said we're not opposed to good works. But the
Lord answered them, my father worketh hitherto and I work.
Verse 18, therefore the Jews sought the Lord to kill him because
he had not only broken the Sabbath but said, But said also that
God was his father, making himself equal with God. So they were
opposed to him doing good works on a certain day. And turn to
John chapter 9. You remember the man who was
blind, who was healed. In John 9 verse 16. Verse 15 of John 9 says, again,
the Pharisees also asked this man how he received this sight,
and he said unto them, the Lord put clay upon my eyes, I washed
and do see. Therefore said some of the Pharisees,
this man is not of God, because he keepeth not the Sabbath day.
Others said, how can a man that is a sinner do such miracles?
And there was a division among them. So they were opposed to
him doing good works, weren't they? They're liars, liars, liars,
liars. And many, here's the point, many
religious folks have no problem with the Lord Jesus Christ being
good little Jesus, doing miracles and miracles and miracles, sweet
little Jesus. They have no problem with Jesus
who wants to and can't and who tried and failed. They will allow
that. But when they find out that he
is God, Almighty God, that He will have mercy on whom He will
have mercy, that He will love whom He will, that He will save
whom He will, that He will harden whom He will. Oh, now wait a
minute. I don't want anything to do with
that kind of Jesus. Well, you just slammed the door
on yourself because there's no salvation apart from the Sovereign
Christ of God. See, He's Lord and Savior. He'll
have mercy on whom He will. Turn back to John chapter 5.
Remember what happened in Luke 4? We read it last week when
the Lord declared unto them that He will have mercy on whom He
will. They took Him to the brow of the hill and would cast Him
off. They said, that's not fair to have mercy on the Gentile
dogs. Turn to John chapter 5. You see
the Lord, He's the sovereign Lord. He'll have, the Father
has given Him power over all flesh and He should give eternal
life to as many as the Father had given to Him. In John 5,
21, for as the father raises up the dead and quickeneth them,
even so the Son will quicken whom He will. He hid these things
from the wise and prudent and revealed them unto babe, even
so Father, for so it seemed good in His sight. It is not of him
that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but as God shows mercy. You see, we must be confronted
with the Christ of God. Saving faith is bowing, not to
your conception or idea of who God is, but bowing to the Christ
of God, the sovereign Lord, the sovereign Savior. Bowing unto
Him and looking unto Him. Look what else they say in verse
33. Well, we're not opposed to good works, but for you're evil
speaking, you're blaspheming, because that thou being a man,
you make yourself out to be God. Thou being a man. You make yourself
God. Now, two mistakes they make here.
They thought he was just a mere man. Now he was a man, but he's
not just a mere man. They thought he was just a mere
man from Nazareth. Carpenters, we know who he is.
We know his mom and dad. His dad's a carpenter. He's a
Nazarene. We know who he is. You see, looked
at Him as just another man. Secondly, they thought He assumed
deity. You make yourself God. Well, they're wrong on both counts.
He is fully and totally man, isn't He? The Word was made flesh
and dwelt among us, but He's also fully and totally God. He's the God-man mediator. He's both fully and totally man
without sin and fully and totally God. God-man in one person. He must be to accomplish our
salvation. For God cannot suffer and man
cannot satisfy. Right? But the God-man did both. Accomplished our salvation. The Word was made flesh and dwelt
among us. God was manifest in the flesh.
The Lord Jesus Christ does not make Himself God. He's no self-appointed
God or Savior. God declares Him to be God. Doesn't He? Turn to Hebrews chapter
1. We had this in our Bible study.
This is a good scripture to use on those who deny the deity of
Christ. Because the Father says of the
Son, in Hebrews 1 verse 8, But unto the Son he saith, that is,
God saith, Thy throne, O God. There's the Father declaring
to the Son that He is God. Hebrews 1 verse 8. Thy throne,
O God, is forever, a scepter of righteousness, a scepter of
thy kingdom. There's the father calling the
son God. The Word of God declares him
to be God. In the beginning was the Word,
and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. John the prophet,
John the Baptist declared him to be God, didn't he? You remember over in verse 41
of John 10? Turn over there. John the Baptist
declared him to be God. John did no miracle, but all
things that John spake of this man were absolutely true. Now, let's go back to John chapter
1. We can spend the rest of the
morning right here. What did John say to the Lord Jesus Christ?
John chapter 1, verse 15. John 1.15. John bare witness
of Him. You got it? John 1.15. He cried,
saying, Was he of whom I spake, he that cometh after me is preferred
before me, for he was before me." You see, He's the eternal
God. And of His fullness, in Him glows
all the fullness of the Godhead bodily. Of His fullness have
we all received grace for grace. Grace because of grace. For the
law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. No man hath seen God at any time,
the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father."
Figure that one out. He's in the bosom of the Father,
yet He walks on this earth. How can that be? Because He's
God everywhere present. He hath declared Him. What else
did John say? John 1.29. Turn over there. You
see, John the Baptist declared that He is God. His works declared
that He is God. John 1.29, the next day, John
sees Jesus coming unto him, says, Behold the Lamb of God, which
taketh away, or beareth away, the sin of the world. Who is
the world? His people, His sheep, the world
of His sheep. John 3.35, what did all things
that John spake of this man were true? He is a true God, God our
Savior. John 3. John said, verse 30, he must
increase, I must decrease. He cometh from above, he's above
all. You see that? Look at verse 34. For he whom God hath sent speaketh
the words of God, for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto
him. The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into
his hand. All things. He that believeth
on the Son hath everlasting life. Life, he that believeth not the
Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him. Turn to John 20. John 20. Thomas, the apostle, declared
that he is God. John the Baptist declared he
is God. His people own him as God Almighty, as Thomas says
here in John 20, 28. Thomas answered and said unto
him, My Lord and my God. My Lord and my God. One other
scripture turned to John 13. John 13, 13. John 13, 13. You
call me Master and Lord, and you say, Well, so I am. So I am. You see my friend, you
cannot believe the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ and not
believe that He is God. You can't. You cannot believe
the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ and not believe that He
is God. Turn back to John chapter 8 verse 24. John 8, 24, I said
therefore unto you that you shall die in your sins, for if you
believe not that I am, I am that I am, the same I am that spoke
from that bush that did not burn that said to Moses, I am that
I am, if you believe not that I am, you shall die in your sins. You see, we trust Him as God.
We own Him as God our Savior. You cannot believe the gospel
of the Lord Jesus Christ and not believe that He is God our
Savior. You see, we own Him. as Lord
and Christ, able to save to the uttermost. He died as God our
Savior to put away our sin. God bought us with His own blood. We preach Him as God our Savior
come to accomplish our salvation. So the works that He did declare
His deity. That's proof number one. Proof
number two is this. Verse 34 and verse 35 and 36,
back in John 10. Here's the second thing. And the Lord, when they said
to Him, Thou makest Thyself God, and the Lord answered them, Is
it not written in your law? And this is from Psalm 82. God
said, Ye are gods. Ye are gods, small g, plural.
Ye are gods and children of God. Children of the Most High. Psalm
82, 6. If he called them gods, that
is the Lord, these ruling magistrates that were set up, powers that
be, are ordained of God. Romans 13, 1. Unto whom the word
of God came, and the scriptures cannot be broken. Say ye of him
whom the Father hath sanctified, whom the Father hath set aside
from all eternity, and sent into the world, that thou blest famous,
because I said, I am the Son of God, or God the Son." So the
second proof of His deity is the written Word of God. The Lord Jesus Christ places
high value on the Word of God, doesn't He? Turn back to John
chapter 5. Remember when those two men walked on the road to
Emmaus? And the Lord took the Scriptures,
and beginning up Moses, and all the prophets, he expounded unto
them, and all the Scriptures, the thing concerning himself."
John chapter 5. You see, the Scriptures are all
about him. Search the Scriptures, for in them ye think ye have
eternal life. They are they, John 5.39, which
testify of me. And ye will not come to me that
ye might have life. So the Word of God testifies
of Him. To Him give all the prophets
witness. Since the Lord called those magistrates in the day
of the Old Testament prophets, governors, magistrates and governors,
He called them ruling magistrates, or gods, and the Lord said the
Word of God cannot be broken, cannot be diminished, cannot
be changed, cannot be made void, Heaven and earth, he said, will
pass away, but my word will never pass away. Forever, O Lord, thy
word is settled in heaven. Psalm 138 says, Thou hast magnified
thy word above all thy name. Now look at verse 36. So the
Lord, what he does here, he uses the very word of God to declare
unto them and to show unto them that he is God. Say ye of him,
verse 36, of whom the Father has sanctified, That means to
set apart and send into the world, and sent into the world thou
blasphemous because I said I'm the Son of God. Now here's the
Lord's argument. And here's his valid point. He
takes the wind out of their sail and the power away from their
argument. Since God has called those magistrates who he chose
to set up as ruling governors, and since he called them gods,
is it wrong, is it blasphemy for the Christ of God, who is
the appointed, sanctified Savior, Redeemer, and Mediator, to call
himself God the Son, or the Son of God, who was ordained from
old? From eternity to be prophet, priest, and king, to accomplish
our salvation, Him being the Lamb slain before the foundation
of the world, is it wrong for Him to say, I'm the Son of God,
according to the Word of God? Absolutely not. The Lord Jesus
Christ is the Son of God, is He not? That's what the Word
of God declares. Unto us a child is born, and a son is given.
And his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, the Mighty
God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace of His Kingdom. There shall be no end. The government
shall be upon His shoulders. He is Son of God, Him being delivered
by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God. For the
Word of God, the works of God declare His Deity, I and Father. We're one. Worthy of our worship. Worthy of our trust. Worthy to
rest in Him for all of salvation. Thirdly, here's the other thing,
the third proof. Do you see it there? What's the
third proof? Verse 39. Doesn't this declare
His deity? Verse 39. Therefore they sought
again to take Him, to take Him, but He escaped. out of their
hands. Now, he's no Houdini here. He's
not escaping like Houdini did. The Lord Jesus Christ is no Houdini. The Lord Jesus Christ is God.
God Almighty. Here's another proof of His deity
demonstrating that He is God, worthy of our worship and trust.
When they wanted to take Him and to abuse Him and to kill
Him, He simply passed right through their hands. He restrained them
and stopped them by His power. Just as He did in Luke chapter
4 when they sought to carry Him to the brow of the hill, to the
cliff and throw Him off. He went through the midst of
them and went His way. Look back here in John chapter
7. John chapter 7. John chapter 7. Look first of
all at verse... Verse 32, John 7, 32. And the
Pharisees heard that the people murmured such things concerning
him, and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to
take him. Okay? They were going to arrest
him. They put out a warrant for his
arrest. They said, go get him, arrest him, and bring him here.
We want to see him. You bring him here. Okay? Turn
to John 7, 44. And some of them would have taken
him, but no man laid hands on him. Then came the officers to
the chief priests and the Pharisees. They said to him, Why didn't
you arrest him and bring him? Why haven't you brought him here?
The officers answered and said, Well, never man spake like that
man. I mean, he just said, Stop, stop. They couldn't touch him. Turn over here to John 18. Let
me show you another example of this. John 18, when they came
to arrest him in the garden, I think maybe this gives us a
good indication of how he passed through them. and how they couldn't
lay a hand on him until that appointed hour. In John 18, when
he was in the garden, when Judas led the band of officers, and
the Lord Jesus said in verse 4, Whom seek ye? Verse 5, John
18, they answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. And the Lord said
unto them, I am. Now the word he there has been
added. I am. And Judas also, which betrayed
him, stood with them. And as soon as he said, I am,
they went backward and fell to the ground." I mean, they passed
out. I mean, they just went flat on
the ground. I think that's what happened
when they couldn't arrest him. No man ever spoke like that man.
He just flattened them with a word. Now, who can do that? Only God has that kind of power. He said, all power is given to
me in heaven and in earth. Now, we know, now look back at
John 10 verse 18. Here's the willingness of the
Lord Jesus Christ. You see, no one could touch him,
no one could arrest him, no one could take him until that appointed
hour. And there in John 18, we'll see
that they did. But look what it says in John 10, 18. No man
takes my life from me. I lay down my life, that I might
take it again. Verse 17. No man takes it from me. I lay
it down. I have power to lay it down. I have power to take
it again. This commandment have I received of my Father. So even
the very fact that they couldn't arrest him, they couldn't touch
him, he had his way with them, didn't he? They couldn't do anything
with him. Doesn't that declare His deity
that He is God? Now, here's the fourth thing,
verse 42. The fourth thing. Here, verse 41, 42. The Lord,
well, let's go back to verse 40. And the Lord escaped out
of their hand and went away again beyond Jordan into the place
where John at first baptized, and there he abode. And many
resorted, or many came to him. Many came to the Lord Jesus Christ
and said, John did no miracles, but all things that John spake
of this man were true. And many, many, I don't have
many, but many did. Many believed on Him there. I mean, they trusted the whole
weight of their salvation upon Him. They believed Him. They believed Him. That's a miracle
of grace. That's another proof of His deity,
is it not? They believed Him. Another proof
of His deity. You see, two things. I'll let
you go here. Coming to the Lord Jesus Christ is a miracle of His sovereign
power. For no man can come to me, remember
that verse, no man can come to me except the Father which sent
me, draw him. No man knoweth the Father save
the Son, and he to whom the Son will reveal him. You see, coming
to the Lord Jesus Christ is not a physical move. It's a spiritual
act of a newborn, regenerated soul. Coming to the Lord Jesus
Christ and believing on Him is a proof of His deity. For no
man in and of himself can believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. It's
an impossibility. I have no more ability to believe
the gospel than I have any ability to obey the law. I don't have
any ability to obey the law. Nor do I have any ability to
believe the gospel. You see, believing the gospel
is a miracle of His power, of His grace. Many came to Him,
and many believed on Him, believing on Him, trusting Him, looking
unto Him, looking unto the Lord Jesus Christ, is the fruit of
the new birth, not the cause. Not the cause, it's the fruit.
Now we go back to John 1, turn over there. Now this is a vital point, especially
in this day in which we live. Because what's being preached
in this day, they say, well, believe on Christ and you'll
be born again. No, it's just that they've got
it backwards. We believe on the Lord Jesus
Christ because we have been born of God. That's what the Word
of God teaches. Whosoever believeth that Jesus
is the Christ is born of God. Except a man be born again, he
cannot see the Kingdom of God. Now, John 1, John 1 verse 11,
John chapter 1 verse 11, he was in the world, the world knew
him not, verse 10, the world was made by him, he came into
his own, his own nation, his own people, they didn't receive
him, they said, away with him, crucify him, but as many as,
there's that many as again, as many as were ordained to eternal
life belief, as many as received him, To them gave he right, power,
privilege, to become sons of God, even to them that believe
on his name." Now, I'm not an English teacher. I don't claim
to know much about punctuation. But I know that where it says
that believe on his name, there's not a period there. There's a
colon there. Now, a lot of people quote this
verse and leave out the next part because Those who receive
Him do so, and those who believe on Him do so because of what's
said in verse 13. Which we're born of God, not
of fleshly blood, not of the will of flesh, not of the will
of man, but we receive Him and believe Him because we're born
of God. You see that? It takes a new
birth to believe. Turn to John chapter 5, 24. John
5, 24. John 5, 24. Verily, verily, verse
24. Verily, verily, truly, truly,
I say unto you, he that heareth my word, and believeth on him
that sent me, has, already has. already has eternal life, and
shall not come into condemnation, but is passed from death unto
life." You see, believing the gospel is the fruit of being
raised from the dead. Secondly, believing on the Lord
Jesus Christ is a miracle of sovereign grace and His power,
His power, His power. Now oftentimes when we talk about
Irresistible grace, an effectual call, oftentimes the opponent
of the gospel, one who is imposed to the gospel, would say, well,
a sinner has to repent, a sinner has to believe, a sinner has
to do this, a sinner has to do that. Okay? Where does true godly
repentance come from? He's exalted the Lord Jesus Christ
to give us repentance, right? Repentance, like faith, is a
gift of God. Faith is not something that we
produce. The only thing that's native
to this wicked heart is unbelief. Faith is something that Arthur
Pink said is exotic. That is, it doesn't bloom in
his heart by nature. It's planted there by the sovereign
hand of God. You see, believing the gospel
of the Lord Jesus Christ, we do believe. We are brought to
Christ in saving faith. But that faith is not of ourselves. For by grace are you saved through
faith, and that not of yourselves. It is a gift of God, not of works,
lest any man should boast. How could that be any clearer?
You see, we believe according to the working of His mighty
power. You see, believing on Him, and I want you to look at
this scripture. I'm almost through, stay with me. I want you to see
this. Turn with me. This is 1 Timothy chapter 3.
1 Timothy chapter 3. I've never seen this connection
here before. I've been looking at this a long time. I've never
seen this connection right here to this point. Many believed
on Him there. Being a son of God, is a miracle
of grace. We're adopted into the family
of God. It's a miracle of His grace and
power. It's a miracle that the Son of
God became incarnate in the flesh. That's a great miracle, is it
not? Look at verse 16, 1 Timothy 3, 16. Without controversy, without
debate, great is the mystery of godliness. God was manifest
in the flesh. Now what a great and glorious
mystery. God who inhabits eternity inhabited
the body of a man. God was manifest in the flesh,
justified or vindicated by God the Holy Spirit. Owned by God
the Holy Spirit. Seen of angels. The angels declared
that He is God. Preached unto the Gentiles. Well
that's a miracle of grace. Watch this. Believed on in the
world. Now, incarnation's a miracle.
That's by the power of God Almighty, is it not? So is believing on
the Lord Jesus Christ. It's a great miracle of grace. Faith is the sovereign gift of
God. That's why it's called precious,
precious, precious, precious. Now, look back to John 10.10. And many, many believed on Him
there. Many resorted unto Him, many
came unto Him, and coming unto Christ, believing on Him. Oh, the blessedness of believing
the gospel. Now, here's a question for all
of us to consider. Do you trust the Lord Jesus Christ as all your salvation? You know the answer to that question.
You looking to the Lord Jesus Christ alone for all righteousness,
all redemption, all glorification, all things, all spiritual blessings.
Are you looking unto Him like a mercy beggar? God have mercy
on me, thee sinner. You're a blessed man. Many, many
believed on Him. on him, on him there. May it be true of us here. May
we believe on the Lord Jesus Christ.
