And most of the time when people
off the top of their heads call in questions, it's involving
the secret things that we know so little about. And the same thing is true when
you endeavor to preach from God's Word verse by verse. And folks
naturally expect you to clear up any cloudy phrase or statement
or a verse and it's an impossibility there. Paul said we preach, we know
in part and we prophesy in part, we preach in part. When that
which is perfect is come, then that which is in part, our limited
knowledge, our limited understanding will be, will do away, be done
away. But now we see, but we see through
a glass dimly. In about 30 years, you come up
and ask me a question. I'll answer it. For I'll be in
glory, the Lord willing, and I'll have the answers. I'll know
as I have been known. But my knowledge is so, so limited. But there, in the things regarding
salvation, the things regarding redemption, We understand. The Son of God has come and given
us an understanding in regard to these vital, important matters
of the soul and how God saves sinners. He's come and given
us an understanding that we may know Him that is true, that this
is the true God and this is eternal life. And so when we go into
these Verses, verse by verse, phrase by phrase, almost word
by word. You forgive me when you say,
well, he didn't clear that up. No, it's not clear to him, so
he didn't clear it up, you know. But what I know, I'll tell you,
I won't hold back anything that's profitable to you. Now, I plan
to speak tonight from the scripture which Brother John read. Hebrews
12, we'll pick up where we left off this morning. with verse
14. I've divided these last verses
of Hebrews 12 into three parts. Verses 14 through 17, there's
a course to follow. You can draw a little line around those
1, 2, 3, 4 verses, and there is a course set forth to follow. And then verse 18 through 24,
there's a place to come. There's a course for us to follow
and there's a place for us to come. And then beginning with verse
25, there's a voice for us to hear. Him that speaketh from
heaven is a voice to hear. Now, let's look at verse 14.
Follow peace with all men. Follow peace with all. The word
men is in italics, but naturally men and women. Now to follow
peace is not just to appreciate it, and it's not just to desire
it, but to follow peace. When we follow someone or something,
when we follow it, it's to exert every effort with diligence to
promote peace. falls upon me to promote peace,
not just a desire to say, well, I like peace. I appreciate peace
and I want peace. No, let's do what we can to cultivate
it. That's what it is. You follow
it. Give yourself to it. And there are three places of
most importance to me and to you in regard to this matter
of peace. Peace is unity, love, gentleness and quietness of spirit. It's the opposite of quarrelsome
debate and friction. So these three places, number
one, the home. Let's follow, pursue, and put
forth, exert every effort with diligence to have peace in our
home between husband and wife. gentleness, kindness, consideration,
peace, not quarreling, don't. And between parents and children,
and between children and children in our homes, and it's my responsibility
and yours to pursue that, to see that that peace reigns in
the home. My responsibility, not somebody
else's. Well, they treat me right, I'll
treat them right. No, no, that's not the way. It's not response,
it's originating with us. That's right, in the home, between
brothers and sisters, between in-laws. Had a fella say to me
one time, well, I don't like my wife's brother, because it's
her brother. She loves him, and you ought
to love him because she loves him, and be kind to him. Well, I don't like my in-laws.
Well, there's a lot of folks that maybe we don't agree with
the way they do things. But now wait a minute. That's
my wife's mother and father. And she loves them. They're her
family. It's my business to promote a
fellowship with them. That's right now. Doesn't matter
who you like or don't like. God commands us to love our neighbors
as ourselves. Love everybody. And you just
He says, you follow peace. Now, you keep down the hiccups
and stop this quarrelsome aggravating. It's inconsistent with the grace
of God. Well, let's back that up. Follow
peace in the home. Now, in the church, how blessed
it is, John Fleming quotes this all the time, how blessed it
is for brethren to dwell together in unity. How essential it is. How necessary it is, it just
must be. That's my business and every
one of us, it's our personal business to keep down any bitter
spirit, any wrangling, any quarreling. That's right, follow peace in
the home and in the church. Turn to Ephesians chapter 4,
Ephesians chapter 4, listen to this. Ephesians chapter 4, verse
1. Now let's read this here. I therefore, the prisoner of
the Lord, beseech you that you walk worthy of the vocation wherewith
you are called, with all lowliness and meekness, humility, longsuffering,
patience, forbearing one another, forgiving one another, overlooking
the fault endeavor it to keep the unity of the Spirit in the
bond of peace. We have it here by God's grace.
We have it because it's a goal. It's what you want. It's what
not only we desire, but what we put forth every effort to
have it. Look not on your own things,
but on the things of others. If any man have a quarrel or
disagreement, just forget it. Just forget it. It's not worth
disturbing the peace over. The only thing worth disturbing
the peace over is the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. His
name, His honor, His glory, we'll fuss over that. If anybody compromises
the gospel, we'll have a disagreement. But not over these insignificant
things. What color these walls are. What
kind of carpet to put in this building? Or who does this or
who does that? It doesn't matter. It's who gets
the glory. So, peace in the church. Thirdly, in our natural relationships. Now, there's the three areas
that we are involved. I'm involved in my home. And you fathers and mothers just
don't put up with it. Quarreling in the home is not,
it just ought not to be. Live together in harmony and
peace. Love each other. The church, and that's my responsibility
as pastor, is not going to have dissension and quarreling and
falling out. It's just, and I respond. Now, on the job, natural relationship
with friends and neighbors and co-workers. Live in peace. Live in peace as much as within
you. Let's turn to Romans 12. And
it's not just something we desire. He tells us to follow this, make
it our aim to cultivate peace, harmony. In Romans 12, verse
17, recompense no man to no man evil for evil don't get even. Provide things honest in the
sight of all men. Let be possible as much as lies
within you. In you live peaceably with all
men. Dearly beloved, avenge not yourself. Don't get even. Rather, give
place to wrath. Just turn and walk away. It's written, vengeance is mine.
I'll repay, saith the Lord. I guarantee you nobody's going
to get away with mistreating God's children. But let Him handle
it, not you or me. Peace. All right, let's go back
to our text. Follow peace in the home, in
the church, with your neighbors, your friends, co-workers, and
follow holiness. Follow it, pursue it, desire
it. Now what is it? It's twofold.
There's first the holiness and righteousness of Christ without
which no man will see the Lord. Turn to Romans 4. Romans chapter 4. This is the
righteousness and holiness I'm talking about right now. That
I want, that I must have, that you desire and seek above all
things to be robed in his righteousness, to be clothed in his holiness,
to be made perfect in the sight of God. In Romans 4, verse 3,
what say the scriptures? Abraham believed God. It was counted unto him for righteousness. There's the righteousness I must
have. Perfection in Christ. Perfection
in Christ. He is my righteousness. But my friends, that's not the
only righteousness and holiness that we are to pursue. And we're
to follow. We're to follow holiness in our
walk, in our behavior, in our conduct on this earth. If any man be in Christ, he's
a new creature. Old things have passed away and
all things become new. He's a new character. He has
a new attitude, a new spirit, new conduct and new conversation. And our Lord said, let your light
so shine before me. that they may see your good works
and glorify your Father which is in heaven." Pursue that. Pursue
that. Let me show you a verse over
here in Titus. Titus chapter 2. Titus chapter
2. We'll start reading with verse
9. Read verse 9 and 10. Exhort servants to be obedient
to their masters. Children to be obedient to their
parents. Wives to be in obedience to their
husbands. Husbands to love their wives.
Employers to treat their employees with dignity. All of these things. Exhort people to do these things.
And to please them well in all things, not answering again,
or cising, or talking back. Not talking back. Recognize authority
and don't talk back. And verse 10, not forlorning. That word is steal. Don't steal. Don't take what belongs to your
employer. Don't steal, but show good fidelity. Fidelity, honesty. Now, tell
people these things, that what? Listen, that they may adorn the
doctrine of God our Savior in all things. What does the word
adorn mean? It means to make attractive. It means to garnish, decorate. In other words, the girls fix
the hair up. They could just let it strain
down. It would still be hair. But they curl it up a little
bit. That adorns it. Then they put a ribbon in it.
Put a ribbon in the little girl's hair, you know, and put a fluffy
dress on. You're adorning her. She's a
girl, and she's a sweet girl, but you're dressing her up to
make her look better. And that's what this is saying.
The doctrine of Christ, the doctrine of man's fall and God's love
and covenant grace and particular redemption and the election and
the calling. These are doctrines, sound doctrines,
true doctrines. But I tell you, sometimes the way people preach
it doesn't make it very attractive. The way people live doesn't make
it very attractive. The way people act doesn't make
it very attractive. You know what I'm saying? The
way they treat other people makes you, well, you know, if that's
what it is, I don't want it. It hasn't done much for him.
See what I'm saying? So teach people to walk and talk and live
in such a way that it'll adorn the things they believe. Walk
worthy of their calling. You're a king's son. Walk like
a king's son. Talk like a king's son. Dress
like a king's son. folks will glorify your Father,
which is in heaven. All right, let's look at verse
50. This is the course to walk. Now follow peace, follow righteousness,
the righteousness of Christ and a righteous walk. Verse 15, now let's read verse
15, 16 together. Looking diligently, and notice
there are three less, L-E-S-T. Last, here, looking diligently,
looking to ourselves, looking out for one another, looking
to Christ, looking to my heart, looking to my mind, looking to
my spirit. Now listen, look diligently,
number one, lest any man fail or fall of the grace of God. You know I tell you the book
of Hebrews is a book of promises. All the promises of God in the
book of Hebrews. Promises we have in Christ. All
the promises of God in Christ. I tell you the book of Hebrews
is a book of not only promises but warnings. Let me show you
just a few. Turn to Hebrews 3. A book of
warnings. It says in Hebrews chapter 3,
verse 12, Take heed, brethren, lest there be found in any of
you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living
God. But take heed, look diligently, exhort one another daily, while
it's called today, Lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness
of sin, for we may partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning
of our confidence steadfast to the end. See that? And then take
heed, brethren, over here in chapter 10, when I was reading
Wednesday night, turn to chapter 10, or Sunday before last, Hebrews
10, 38. The just shall live by faith.
But if any man draw back, my soul has no pleasure in him.
But we're not of them that draw back to perdition. We are of
them that believe to the saving of the soul. So let's look diligently. See verse 15, this is the course
for us. Follow peace, follow holiness,
and look diligently. Look in my own mind and heart. Look to my friends, my brethren. Lest anybody fail, fall from
the grace of Christ, depart from the gospel. See that? Second,
lest. Look diligently, second, lest
any root of bitterness springing up trouble. You know, I've been
in the gospel and the ministry a
long, long time. Soon be 45 years I've been pastor. And I've been to a lot of churches.
I've preached in a lot of places all over the world. And this is something so common,
so common in churches. Is there a bitter spirit will
rise up and it starts in somebody's heart. That's where When you
have a split and a division and folks quit speaking to one another
and folks leave the church and get mad and stay mad, there's
a bitter spirit starts somewhere. It starts, it spreads, but starts
somewhere. And here's what we're warning
of. Now you look diligently, lest any of us fall from the
grace of God. Depart from the grace of God,
unless they start in me, or in you, or someone, a bad spirit,
a bad spirit, a bitter spirit. And you spread, and listen, and
it'll trouble you, and thereby many will be defiled. You know,
if a fellow finds a bad attitude in his own heart towards somebody,
or towards a pastor, or somebody in the church, And if he'll go
before the throne of grace and get it out, seek forgiveness,
and God to cleanse his spirit, give him a right attitude, spirit
love, it'll be over. But if he shares it with somebody,
then they get better. And he shares it with somebody
else, and after a while, they get better. And then you've got,
oh, you've got sides that choose up. Barney says, spit on the
hand, choose up and take sides. And then there's an awful thing. And families are divided, and
brethren are divided, and churches are divided, and folks don't
speak anymore, and they have a bad spirit, and everybody's
hurt. Hurt, thus many be defiled. Defiled. I've seen that happen. Men get
a bitter spirit. And they not only leave, but
they take their children out from under the gospel. That's
what's bad. Their children don't know what
the fight was all about, but they're hurt. Like a fella said
one time, well I may blow up and pop off sometimes, but I
get over it. Yeah, but now wait a minute,
you've scalded everybody around you, and they can't get over
it. You see, when a pea cattle blows
up and throws out hot water, everybody gets scalded. You might
take the pea cattle, fix it all up again. It's ready to boil
again, but everybody's wounded, scalded. Hurt everybody. And children
pay for it for years to come. Years and years to come. That's
sad. Lest, look diligent, Lest. Thirdly, lest, now here's the
third lest, look diligently, lest there be any fornicator
or profane person like Esau who for one morsel of meat sold his
birthright. Now this birthright that Esau
held in contempt and sold, it was a whole lot more than the
family farm. Somebody thinks, well, Esau was the firstborn
and his father's will, everything came to him. All the barns and
the cattle and the... That's not it. That's not it
at all. If he left that, I'd brag on
him. He don't need that junk. He needs God. That's right. Don't, you don't cut me out of
your will, that'd be fine, but don't let God cut me out of his
will. That's, that's, I'm not of man's will, his will. I want to be in his will. His
last will and testament. But Esau, the birthright, was
God's man in the home. That's what the birthright was.
The firstborn was God's man in the home. He was a spiritual
leader. He had fellowship with God. He spoke for God in that
home. Isn't that right? The firstborn
did. He was not the high priest, but
the priest of the home. And old Esau came back from a
hunting trip, and he was hungry, and his brother Jacob had Some
things that looked awful good, less to the eye, less to the
mind, and the pride of life. And he held in contempt this
relationship with God, this fellowship with God. And his brother Jacob
said, you can have this if you give up your birthright. He said,
I'll take it. And you say, well, that was a
dumb thing to do. We do dumb things like that too
when we give up gospel fellowship for something out here in this
world. That's right. He exchanged his
fellowship with God for something that appealed to his flesh. And
I try to tell young people, young men, young women, they won't
listen to me, but I try to tell them anyhow. I'm going to keep
trying to tell them. Here's a young man that knows God, loves God,
or a young woman that loves God, knows God, they meet another
person who doesn't know God. And I tell them, don't form a
relationship and a marriage unless both of you know Christ. It won't
work. But they don't listen to me. And he says, well, I won't
hurry if I can't have God. All right. Esau says, I want
that morsel of meat even if I can't have God. And he sold it. And
it says in verse 17, afterwards, and there's always an afterwards. There's always an afterwards. Fellow give up fellowship. You
know, one of you men, your company promotes you and sends you to
Timbuktu. There's no gospel in Timbuktu. There's no fellowship
in Timbuktu. But wait a minute, I'll have
a better job, a better home, a better car. Well, take it then.
But you've lost God. And there's always an afterwards,
that car's going to wear out, that home's going to burn down,
that job's going to play out, and then you're going to sit
and say, I wish I'd have never left the gospel. And as Esau
listened, afterwards, when he would have inherited the blessing,
he was rejected. He found no place of repentance.
Yeah, but I'll repent too late. He sought it with tears. He never
found it. So here's a course. Follow peace. Follow holiness. Look diligently these three things. Lest any man fail for the grace
of God, Lest any root of bitterness spring up here and hurt a lot
of people. Or lest this old flesh, something
appeals to it, takes me away from Christ. That's the course. All right. Here's the place to
come now, secondly. The place to come. Verse 18. Verse 18 tells us where we don't
come. Verse 18 says, you're not come
to the mount that might be touched, that burned with fire and blackness,
darkness and tempest. Verse 22 says, here's where you
come. You come to Mount Zion, to the
city of the living God. Could I dwell on that just a
few minutes with your patience? I stayed too long on the first
point. In other words, we're not come to Mount Sinai, we come
to Mount Zion. We don't come to the law, we
come to Christ. Now here in verse 18, it says,
you're not come to the mount that might be touched. You say,
I thought they couldn't touch that mount. Well, now let me
tell you something. Number one, it might be touched because it's
a common, ordinary mountain. It's Mount Sinai. It's natural,
it's physical, it's material, it is a mountain. Mount Zion is not a place in
the sense that it's material. or physical, see what I'm saying?
Or like going to Mecca, or going to Rome, or going to Jerusalem.
People say, I'm going to church. You don't go to church. You are
the church. This is not a church. It's a
building. It's where church meets. See
what I'm saying? Spiritual. So the mountain might
be touched, but secondly, you better not touch it. That's what
Exodus says. Not even a beast could touch
it or die because it's the place of holiness where God gave his
love. So it might be touched because it's a natural, physical
mountain, but it might not be touched because God appeared
there in his glory. And you can't approach God except
in Christ. Now you can touch Christ, you
can go to him. He's the God man, but don't go to God without Christ.
And Christ isn't in Mount Sinai. He's not that, that's the law.
Okay, that's the place, Mount Sinai. Now listen, what's the
circumstances? Well, verse 19, and that mountain,
there was a sound of the trumpet. I'm not going to go back and
read Exodus, you can, 19 and 20, but there was a sound of
the trumpet, the voice of words, giving of the law. Which, boys,
they that heard entreated that the word should not be spoken
to them any more." You know, they told Moses when God spoke,
they said, Moses, you talk to us, don't let God talk to us.
Let's put it out. Let's put it out. That's the
circumstance. But you know what the difference?
When God gave the law in Sinai, there was darkness, loud voice,
sound of the blare of the trumpet that kept getting louder, put
their hands over their ears. Darkness, blackness, tempest,
lightning, they ran from the mountain. When the Lord Jesus
came, there were in that country shepherds abiding in the fields,
keeping watch, keeping their flocks by night, and lo, the
glory of God shone round about them. And the angel of the Lord
appeared to them. and said, don't be afraid, peace,
the glory of God, we bring you glad tidings, good tidings of
great joy, which shall be to all people. That's a lot different
from Sinai, isn't it? We don't come to Sinai, we come
to Christ. We bring you peace and goodwill. The matter of the law, Look at
verse 20, and the effect of it. They couldn't endure that which
was commanded. And if so much as a beast touched
the mountain, it shall be stoned or thrust through the dark. And
what's this? So terrible was the effect and
the sight that even Moses said it. Exceedingly clear and quick. God's immaculate, immutable, infinite holiness,
even Moses. You that would be under the law,
you don't hear the law? Where are we come? All right,
let's see where we are coming. Where do we come? to Mount Zion. What is Mount Zion? Verse 22,
you come to Mount Zion. That's the church. You say we
don't come to the church, we come to Christ. How are you going
to separate them? He's the head. The church is
the body. That's right. You come to Christ,
you come to His church. Come to Mount Zion. Mount Zion
is His habitation. Mount Zion is chosen of God.
Mount Zion is where his gospel is preached. Mount Zion is where
his ordinances are administered. Mount Zion is where his people
are, and where his people are, he said, where two or three of
them are met in my name, that's where I'll be. Huh? That's where
you come. I won't come where he is. He's with the church. Mount Zion,
you come to Mount Zion, listen, not only it's the habitation
of God, and against it the gates of hell cannot prevail, and listen,
it's the city of the living God, it's the city, Abraham looked
for a city whose builder and maker is God. And this is the
city whose builder and maker is God, and every inhabitant
of this city is a believer. Wouldn't you love to live in
a town and go to a school and work in
a place of business where everybody loved Christ? Well, that's this city. There's not a lost person in
this church. Not one. Not an unbeliever in this church.
Not a troublemaker in this church. This is the city of God. And
not only that, this is, watch it, this is heavenly Jerusalem. You know, those old Jews under
the law, they came to Jerusalem. They went there once a year,
everybody. Some of them were born once a
year to worship. Went to the temple, went to the
holy place, went to the mercy seat, went to the different places
there. Well, we worship on earth, but
we, our communion is the heavenly Jerusalem. Christ went into the
holy place not made with hands, but heaven itself. We're blessed
with heavenly blessings. Our intercessor, our high priest
is seated in the heaven. Let me tell you, fella said to
me one time, you ever been to the holy land? I said, I didn't
know there was one. Where is it? He said, where is
it? He said, you know where it is? I said, no, I don't. Where
is it? Place that's over there in Israel. I said, that place
is holy? Oh, he said, you know what I mean? I said, no, I don't
know what you mean. He said, well, it's Bible land. I said,
oh, well, no, I haven't been to the Bible land. But I don't intend to go. Because God is no more there
than he is here. He's here. And I worship not
in a place, I worship in heavenly places. Huh? Come on now. Come
on now. Somebody told me one time, said,
I felt so close to God over there in Galilee. Are you serious? Are you serious? Heavenly places, heavenly Jerusalem. Let's come to an innumerable
company of angels. The angels are ministers to those
who are heirs of salvation. He'll give his angels charge
over you. All of God's little ones, their angels appear in
heaven. The angels are very, very much
involved in our lives. Did you know that? That's right. Very much involved in the life
of a believer. You know when Elijah, Elisha,
that young man was so afraid of the armies of men that were
surrounding them, Elijah said, Lord, open his eyes that he might
see. And God opened his eyes, and
he saw a heavenly host encircling them, the angels of God. And Elijah said, they that are
for us are more than they that are against us. Don't be afraid. That's right, he's an angel.
We've come. Where are you coming? City of the Living God, heavenly
Jerusalem, an innumerable company of angels to the General Assembly
and Church of the Firstborn. Brother Maynard, you believe
in the local church, don't you? Absolutely. Absolutely. With all my heart.
But I know this church is not a local congregation. This is
his church. Church which he purchased with
his own blood. That's right. You say, well, church is an assembly.
Where does this church assemble? Well, first it's assembled in
the mind of God, before the foundation of the world. The church is an
assembly. It's a general assembly. And
this church, this church of the redeemed, this church of the
firstborn, this church, our Lord said, I'll build my church. This
church which he loved, this church which he purchased, this church
which is his body. Assembled in his mind before
the world began He knew every one of them Every one of them
and they were before him. That's right in love secondly
They are assembled in Christ That's right. They're assembled
in Christ when our Lord walked this earth, you know Levi paid
tithes in Abraham But when Christ lived I lived in him And when
Christ obeyed the law, I obeyed it in Him. And when Christ died,
we died in Him. When He was buried and rose again,
we were raised in Him. And we're seated together with
Him in the heavenlies. Every believer, every one of
God's elect is assembled right now in Christ. Every one of them. Those that haven't even yet been
born are in Christ. Isn't that true? And I tell you
this, one day they will be assembled forever in his presence. The
General Assembly, Ecclesia, Assembly, the Church of the Firstborn.
And let me show you something here. Their names are written
in heaven. God doesn't write them down every
day as they come down the aisle either. They are written in heaven. They are written. Books, clothes,
they're written. They're all in there. All in
there. And we come to the judge, God
the judge of all, but he's going to judge us in Christ. There's
no judgment to them who are in Christ Jesus. And to the spirits
of just men made perfect. And verse 24, and we come to
Jesus, the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of
sprinkling which speaketh better things than that of Abel. Abel's
blood cries for vengeance. Christ's blood cries for forgiveness.
Abel's blood was sacrificial blood, animal blood. Christ is
his own blood and cleanseth us from all sin. That's where we
come. All right, here's the last thing.
Here's a voice to hear, and I'll be through. Verse 25, see that ye refuse not him that
speaketh. Brother May, you're doing the
talking. How else is God going to speak
to you? You go through the Bible, every
time God spoke to anyone in the New Testament, He spoke through
His servant. Almighty God, since this book
has been completed, has never in an audible voice spoke to
any man. And preachers can tell you till they're black in the
face, or red in the face, however they get when they get all worked
up, that last night God told me this, don't you believe a
word of it. Now last night, I studied this
book and God taught me some things to teach you. And I've been studying
this book all these years. You pay my expenses so I can
study. You furnished me a place to live,
and a car to drive, and clothes to wear, so I can spend my time
studying. It's a warning to me if I don't.
And I come here on Sunday to teach you. And God speaks to
me and to you through His Word. Isn't that right? Through His
Word. And you've got jobs to do. You
don't have time to sit in your study for hours and hours and
hours and study this book, that book, the other book, and compare
them with this book, and get out of this book what God's teaching.
That's my place. There was a man sent from God
named John, and people heard him, named Paul, named Peter,
and James, and all the rest of them, and Luther, and Zwingli,
and Huss, and Calvin, and Spurgeon, and Gill, and Mahan. And I come to you, this is what
God said. Now, if you don't hear what we're
reading here and what I say, You're in trouble now. You can't
be your own pastor. God never intended that. You
can't be your own shepherd. That'd be like the blind leading
the blind. Sheep have to have a shepherd, have to have a leader. God has raised up prophets and
apostles and missionaries and evangelists and pastors and teachers
to speak to his people, his word. And I'm not going to get up here
and say, now God said this to me. He said it to me through
His Word. And He says it to you the same
way. And I'm trying to get us all to look and see what He says.
And don't refuse Him. See that you refuse not Him that
speaketh. For listen, if they escape not
who refuse Him that spake on earth, Moses, Elijah, and others
that spake on earth, Much more shall we not escape if we turn
from him that speaketh from heaven. God spake to our fathers, but
the prophet in these last days has spoken to us by his son, whose voice shook the earth.
And now he's promising, once more I'll shake the earth, not
the earth only, but also heaven. And this word yet once more signifying
the removal of those things that are shaken. As of things that
are made, if those things which cannot be shaken may remain.
Let's take a moment, turn to Haggai. That's the next third
book from the end of the Old Testament. Haggai, Zechariah,
Malachi, Haggai chapter. What is this shaking? He said,
I shook the earth. Once more I shake the earth and
the heaven. Has that been done? Yes, sir.
Haggai 2. He shook the earth at Sinai,
remember the earth trembled, he gave his law and the earth
trembled. Haggai 2 verse 6, thus saith
the Lord of hosts, yet once it is a little while and I'll shake
the heaven and the earth and the sea and the dry land. I'll
shake all nations and what will happen? And the desire of all
nations. Who is that? That's Christ. He's
the desire of all nations. He shall come and I'll fill this
house with glory, saith the Lord of Hosts.
Henry Mahan
About Henry Mahan

Henry T. Mahan was born in Birmingham, Alabama in August 1926. He joined the United States Navy in 1944 and served as a signalman on an L.S.T. in the Pacific during World War II. In 1946, he married his wife Doris, and the Lord blessed them with four children.

At the age of 21, he entered the pastoral ministry and gained broad experience as a pastor, teacher, conference speaker, and evangelist. In 1950, through the preaching of evangelist Rolfe Barnard, God was pleased to establish Henry in sovereign free grace teaching. At that time, he was serving as an assistant pastor at Pollard Baptist Church (off of Blackburn ave.) in Ashland, Kentucky.

In 1955, Thirteenth Street Baptist Church was formed in Ashland, Kentucky, and Henry was called to be its pastor. He faithfully served that congregation for more than 50 years, continuing in the same message throughout his ministry. His preaching was centered on the Lord Jesus Christ and Him crucified, in full accord with the Scriptures. He consistently proclaimed God’s sovereign purpose in salvation and the glory of Christ in redeeming sinners through His blood and righteousness.

Henry T. Mahan also traveled widely, preaching in conferences and churches across the United States and beyond. His ministry was marked by a clear and unwavering emphasis on Christ, not the preacher, but the One preached. Those who heard him recognized that his sermons honored the Savior and exalted the name of the Lord Jesus Christ above all.

Henry T. Mahan served as pastor and teacher of Thirteenth Street Baptist Church in Ashland, Kentucky for over half a century. His life and ministry were devoted to proclaiming the sovereign grace of God and directing sinners to the finished work of Christ. He entered into the presence of the Lord in 2019, leaving behind a lasting testimony to the gospel he faithfully preached.
