What does the Bible say about being qualified for heaven?

The Bible states that we are unfit for heaven by nature, but God makes us qualified through Christ's grace.

According to Colossians 1:12-14, God has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light, which means He makes us fit for heaven despite our natural unworthiness. Romans 3:10-12 confirms that by nature, no one is righteous or capable of seeking God. Without divine intervention, everyone is disqualified from the glory of heaven. Therefore, the significance of being 'qualified' is rooted in God's grace, which lifts us from our sin and makes us sufficient for His kingdom through Christ.

Colossians 1:12-14, Romans 3:10-12

How do we know God's grace makes us fit for heaven?

We confirm God's grace making us fit through faith in Christ, who redeems and reconciles us to God.

The assurance of our qualification for heaven rests in the truth that God, by His grace, has lifted us from our sinful condition to a place of acceptance in Christ. Ephesians 1:4 indicates that God chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world, emphasizing that our worthiness is based on His choice and not our merit. Additionally, Romans 5:8 demonstrates God's love in that Christ died for the ungodly, further assuring us of our redemption and reconciliation through His blood. This promise of grace is realized through faith, highlighting the importance of belief in the transformative power of Christ.

Ephesians 1:4, Romans 5:8

Why is being unfit for heaven important for Christians to understand?

Understanding our unfitness for heaven highlights the necessity of God's grace and makes the gospel more profound.

A clear comprehension of our unfitness for heaven is crucial because it reveals the depth of God's grace toward us. Romans 3:10-18 outlines the human condition as unrighteous and deserving of condemnation. This doctrine sets the stage for the gospel, which proclaims that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:8). Grasping our unworthy state emphasizes God's unmerited favor, urging us to rely solely on His grace, which qualifies us for heaven through Christ's righteousness rather than our own. Thus, acknowledging our unworthiness magnifies God's grace and glorifies His redemptive plan.

Romans 3:10-18, Romans 5:8

What does it mean to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints?

To be partakers of the inheritance means we receive eternal life and glory in Heaven through Christ.

Being partakers of the inheritance of the saints refers to the eternal reward and glory that believers in Christ will receive as a result of their union with Him. Colossians 1:12 states that by God's grace, we are made fit for this inheritance, which is not only a future promise but also a present reality through our relationship with Christ. This inheritance is incorruptible and undefiled, reserved in heaven, reflecting the unchanging and holy nature of God. Our participation in this inheritance highlights the importance of being positioned in Christ; we gain access to all spiritual blessings and the fullness of what God has promised to His people.

Colossians 1 verse 12, in which Paul says, Colossians
1 verse 12, giving thanks unto the Father. Giving thanks unto
the Father. The Apostle Paul is continually
giving thanks to God. Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable
gift. Beloved, he said, we're bound
to give thanks unto God for you. Beloved of the Lord, because
he hath chosen you to salvation. And here he thanks God. Now watch
this. Giving thanks unto the Father
who hath made us meet. Giving thanks unto the Father
who, by his grace, through Christ our Lord has made us meet. Now I said this morning that's
not a word that we use in that particular context. The word
there is sufficient or qualified or fit. God has made us qualified,
sufficient or fit for what? To be partakers to be literally
not observers and not witnesses, but to literally actually be
partakers of that glorious, wonderful inheritance of the saints in
glory. God has made me and you sufficient,
qualified. God's made you qualified. to
partake of his glory in heaven. And we're talking about an inheritance
which Peter said is incorruptible, undefiled, untouched by sin,
unending, reserved in heaven for you. He's made me qualify.
Now every man and woman here, every one of us, is by natural
birth and state unqualified. Now, I mean all of us. I mean
me and you. I mean my mama and my daddy and
my dear wife and my sweet children and your little baby. Every one
of us by birth and by nature is totally, completely unfit
for heaven. That's right, unfit. Disqualified
by identification. Disqualified. The Bible tells us that. Let's
look at a few passages of Scripture. Turn to Romans 3. Romans chapter
3, verse 10. Romans 3, 10. Listen. As it is
written, there's none righteous, No, not one. There's none that
understandeth. There's none that seeketh after
God. They're all gone out of the way. They are together become
unprofitable. There's none that doeth good.
No, not one. And then he goes on and tells
us what we are. Every faculty of our being defiled
by sin. And verse 19 says, Now we know
that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them that
are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, every mouth
stopped, and all the world become guilty before God." Unfit, unqualified. Isaiah tells us in chapter 1,
verse 6, from the sole of our feet to the top of our head,
there's no qualification. There's no fitness. There's no
soundness. He says, he describes it in a
very terrible way. He says we're like open sores,
running sores, ulcers that have not been bound up. And then he
said in chapter 64 that even our righteousnesses, even our
righteousnesses disqualify us for heaven. Even the best deeds
that we do because they're Filthy what? Filthy rags. Filthy rags. In other words, what he's saying
here in verse 12, Colossians 1, I give thanks unto the Father
who hath made me a son of Adam, a son of corruption and sin by
birth, by nature, by state, by practice, by choice. He's literally
made me fit for heaven, qualified. and sufficient to be a partaker
with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and David, and Paul, and Peter,
James, and John, and the saints of God. Well, there's got to be a work
for us and in us to make us fit for God's presence. Isn't that
correct? We're not fit by nature. We're not fit by birth. There's
got to be a work for us and in us. Do you understand this? There's no need for me to go
any further, no need for you to go any further unless you
understand that you don't make yourself fit for heaven, or qualified,
and your preacher doesn't do it, and the law doesn't do it,
the Father does it. He hath by His grace, and according
to His good purpose and will, according to reasons found only
in himself, made us, who by nature are unqualified and unfit, he
made us fit and qualified for heaven. Our Lord one day lifted
his eyes to heaven and he said, Father, Lord of heaven and earth,
I give thanks that you've hid these things, these mysteries,
from the wise and the prudent and you revealed them to babes,
for even so, Father, it seemed good in thy sight." And that's
the only answer I can give. If God has lifted you from the
dunghill and made you sit among princes, the reason's not in
you, it's in Him. If God has, as you said, turned
the light on and lifted us out of corruption and darkness and
defilement and sin, and made us qualified, made us fit for
glory. It's even so, Father, it seemed
good in thy sight." Do you understand that? No need
to go any further if you don't. Flesh and blood won't inherit
the kingdom of God. I don't care what the preachers
say. By the deeds of the law shall no flesh be justified.
That's what the Scripture declares. Except the man born again, he'll
not enter the kingdom of God. That's a fact. All right. Look
at the next verse. Paul explains how. Paul explains
how God made us qualified and fit for heaven. I give thanks
to God, according to His wisdom and grace, who made me fit and
qualified and sufficient. Right now, if I were to die,
and walk into His presence and sit down and enjoy the peace. Because, verse 13, God hath delivered
us from where we were to where we are. Because He literally,
because God hath delivered us from the kingdom of darkness
and hath transferred us, translated us, into the kingdom of his dear
son." What in the world is he saying? He is saying this. God
has actually literally lifted us out of this corrupt state
in which we were born. We were born dead in trespasses
and sin. David said, in sin my mother
conceived me. I was shapen in iniquity, born
in sin, brought forth from my mother's womb, speaking lies.
That's the only language I knew was the language of lies. I was
born into the kingdom of darkness. I was born dead spiritually. That's what the Word says. I
was a citizen of a damned race. I was citizens of a condemned
people. I was a citizen of darkness. an inhabitant of the kingdom
of darkness and death and corruption. Turn back to Ephesians 2. Isn't
that what this is saying here? Ephesians 2, verse 1. Listen. And you, this is in italics, but it's
picked up later in the chapter, and you hath be quickened, who
were what? Dead in trespasses and sins.
wherein in times past you walked, this was your conversation, this
was your citizenship, this was the tenor of your life, the bent
of your will, you walked according to the course of this world,
according to the prince of the fire, the air, who is Satan,
the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience,
among whom also we all had our citizenship, our conversation,
our behavior, in times past, in the lust of our flesh, fulfilling
the desires of the flesh, and of the mind, and we were by nature
the children of wrath, the children of darkness, the children of
evil, the children of condemnation, just like everybody else, but
God. It's not but I did anything.
It's but God. But God. Here's the difference.
But God. That's where I was. But God,
who is rich in mercy, Thank God he's plenteous in mercy. For
his great love wherewith he loved us, we didn't love him, he loved
us. We love him because he loved
us. You looking for love? Are you
looking for love? Do you want to find love? Somebody
says go to the mother who's just given birth to a child and look
into her eyes and see that tender, compassionate love. That's love. Go to the father as he looks
at his daughter or son with pride and thanksgiving. See that love? He laid down his life for that
child. Go to the dear wife as she looks into the face of her
beloved husband. There's love. No. John says,
here is love. Here's love. You want to say
love? Here's love. Here's love. Here's love. Herein is love. Not that we love God. He loved
us and gave his Son to be the propitiation for our sin. That's
love. Pass by all the rest of it if
you want to get the love. That's why I said, God who is
rich in mercy, verse 5, look, even when we were dead. Now,
I said a while ago, if you can't buy that, don't go any further. even when we were dead, depraved
in darkness, have, dead in sin, have quickened us together with
Christ. What's quickened mean? You've
used it all your life. The quickened the dead, the alive
and the dead. Quickened, made alive. So that's
what he's saying in chapter 1 of Colossians, I give thanks to
God, who hath in a work for me and in me, made me qualified
and fit, who by nature and birth am unfit. He has made me fit,
qualified to be a partaker of that glorious inheritance. How
did He do it? He literally, by His grace, lifted
me out of the kingdom of darkness, and the kingdom of death, and
the kingdom of evil. and literally translated me and
transferred me into the kingdom of His dear Son, the Son of His
love. That's right. You see, what's
that say, saying this? I am a citizen of the USA. I'm an American. When I travel
to another country, boy, I'm always glad to get back here.
Oh, I tell you, I'm so glad when I fill out that customs thing
and all, I can put what it says, citizenship, USA. Oh, I tell you, there's no place
like this blessed country, with all of its faults. I'm a citizen
here. I'm a citizen. I carry a passport. I'm a citizen. This is my country.
And no other country has a claim on me. That's right, they can't
come after me, they can't tax me, they can't lay any claim
to me. No other country can lay claim to me. I'm a citizen of
the USA. And that's what Paul's saying
here. There was a time when I was a citizen, I had my conversation
in the kingdom of evil, ruled over by evil powers. That's part of it. But God Almighty
adopted me and transferred me and translated me out of that
kingdom, out of that corruption, out of that rule, and He put
me in another kingdom, in the kingdom of the Son of His love.
I'm a citizen of the heavenly kingdom. Now, what is this kingdom,
this kingdom of the Son of His love? Well, He tells us in His
Word. You know, a lot of people want
to distinguish between the kingdom of God and the kingdom of heaven
and the kingdom of His Son, And there may be some references
that have some different meanings and all that, but I'm telling
you this, this kingdom of God, when all this is over, when the
destruction of the earth is over and the destruction of the heavens
and there's a new heaven and new earth, there's one kingdom
over which Christ is the king. Call it the kingdom of heaven
or the kingdom of God or whatever kingdom you want to call it,
but it's His kingdom. And it says in the Word of God, That
kingdom is not meat and drink, but righteousness, peace, and
joy in the Holy Ghost. That kingdom is a kingdom not
in word only, but in power. That kingdom is a kingdom of
glory. That kingdom is a kingdom, Paul
said in Hebrews, that cannot be moved. That kingdom is a kingdom
which is everlasting. But chiefly, watch this. Verse
13, Colossians 1, God hath delivered us, he hath delivered us from
the power of darkness, from the rule of darkness, and hath literally
translated us, that word is transferred us, into the kingdom of his dear
Son. It's the kingdom of Jesus Christ.
Now that's the key. It's the kingdom of Jesus Christ.
You see, John Clayville brought a message one time and pointed
out these four or five things. He says this, number one, everything
that Almighty God has for any son of Adam, everything that
God has spiritually, heavenly, eternal, is invested, it's vested
in Jesus Christ. He's the fountain of it, He's
the source of it, He's the He's the one in whom it's found, everything. Secondly, he said, Christ being
the heir, if we partake of his inheritance, we're going to have
to be in a union with him, like a husband and wife. She takes
the husband's name, married to him, she's then joint heir with
him, right? Christ the head we're the body
Christ divine. We're the branches So if he's
the heir and I'm one with him, then I'm a joint heir with him
Well, how are we brought into union with Christ? We're brought
into union with Christ by faith That's how we're brought into
you he that believeth on the Son hath life He that believeth
not the Son shall not suffer Well, how does faith come to
us? Faith comes to us by just what we're doing tonight, the
preaching of the gospel, the Word of God. See, Abraham believed
God. This was Abraham's testimony. He believed God, that God would
do and could do what God promised, so that was counted to him for
righteousness. And it was written not for his sake alone, but for
ours too, Who shall partake of that righteousness if we can
believe just like he did? Abraham believed God. He believed
God. So watch verse 14. In whom? In whom? Now, I've got to go
back just a minute. Paul said, I give thanks to God. I'm not thanking some soul winner,
some preacher. I'm thanking myself. I'm thanking
God. Thanking God. who made me fit
and qualified to enjoy glory. How did he do it? He literally,
by his grace and power, lifted me out of that rotten, corrupt,
dead, dark, depraved condition and transferred me over here
into the kingdom of his Son, Jesus Christ. That's right. In whom we have redemption. In Christ we have redemption.
in whom all that I have, all that I am, all that I ever hope
to be is not because of anything I've done, it's because of who
He is and what He's done, and why He did it, and where He is
now. That's exactly right. Go back
with me to Ephesians 1. I wish we'd become better acquainted
with this book. I do know this, the more I read
God's Word, The more I study God's Word, the more I see of
Christ, and the more I see of Christ, the more comfortable
I become, the happier I become, the more confident I become of
His mercy. Ephesians 1, verse 3. Now, here's
what I'm saying. In Christ, it's the kingdom of
God's dear Son. Verse 3, Ephesians 1. Bless,
bless be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. who hath
blessed us with all spiritual blessing in the heavenlies in
Christ, according as he chose us in Christ, before the foundation
of the world, that we should be holy, not because we were,
but that we should be, and without blame, before him in love, having
predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ.
to himself, and he did all this because he willed to do it according
to the good pleasure of his will, and all of it to the praise of
the glory of his grace, wherein he made us accepted, he made
us qualified, he made us fit in the Beloved. I'm not fit in
me, I'm fit in Christ. It's in him. In whom? Now here's the same verse I just
read in Colossians 1. in whom we have redemption through
his blood, the forgiveness of sin, according to the riches
of his grace, wherein he hath abounded toward us in all wisdom
and prudence, having made known unto us the mystery of his will,
according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in himself,
that in the dispensation of the fullness of time, when all this
is over, he might gather together in one all things in Christ,
both which are in heaven and which are on earth, even in hell. My friends, what a person has,
what a person has, what he claims is only as stable
as the one in whom he has it. Isn't that correct? The stability
of my inheritance The stability of my hope, the firmness of my
profession depends entirely upon the strength of the one in whom
I hope. That's exactly right. His willingness
to be my mediator, his willingness to make me his own, not only
his willingness, but his faithfulness and his power So let's find out
who this is, this son of his love, in whom we have redemption
through his blood, even the forgiveness of sin. Now what I'm saying is
this, I'm making a staggering claim, a staggering claim. I'm just not as presumptuous
and overconfident and cocky as a lot of religionists of this
day. I just don't want to deal in
presumption where my eternal soul is involved and where the
very character of God. And I'm talking about this. God has made what we are is indescribable,
but he's made us qualified and fit for heaven. In Christ, it says. And that's
where it is. Now, who is this Christ in whom
I believe? Who is this Christ in whom I
have confidence? Who is this Christ? You talk
about putting all your eggs in one basket. I put all my hope,
faith, love, trust, confidence, future, soul, in the hands of
Jesus Christ. Now I want to know who He is.
Because my stability and hope rest not in me, but in Him. If
I've given it all into His hands, I had a friend that invited a
man to church one day. This man was a Catholic. And
he invited him to church. And he said, no, he said, I'm
not going to bother to go. And my friend said, well, what's
your hope? If you were to die, what is your
hope of living forever of heaven? What's your hope? Oh, he said,
I don't worry about that. He said, my salvation is in the
hands of the church. And the father, he said, I've
just, I rested all there, and they take care of that for me.
Oh, that's not a very good hope. Because, you see, the father's
nothing but a man, too. The pope's nothing but a man.
And all those traditions and ordinances and buildings and
all are going to decay, just like everything else. But now,
like him, I put my hope in somebody's hands. You have too, haven't
you? I've vested everything, God's
vested everything in him, and I have now. Who is he? Well,
let's see who he is. It says here, verse 15, he's the image
of the invisible God. What's that mean? It means Jesus
Christ is the exact likeness, that Jesus Christ is the revelation,
Jesus Christ is the representation on this earth in human flesh
of God himself. That's who he is. He's God Himself,
that's what it says. It says, "...the Word was made
flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory
as of the only begotten of the Father." He's the brightness
of God's glory, He's the exact image of His person, and He said,
He that has seen Me has seen the Father. Isaiah said, He's
the wonderful counselor of the mighty God, the everlasting Father.
So He's the image of the invisible God. Now watch this, and He's
the firstborn of every creature. The firstborn of every creature.
What does that mean? That He is a creature? No. He
was not created. He's the Creator. But creation
began with Him. For it says in verse 16, For
by Him were all things created. Creation began with Him. Revelation
3.14 says He's the beginning of the creation of God. He's
the firstborn of all creation. Every creature. For by Him where
all things created that are in heaven, that are in earth, visible,
invisible, whether they be thrones or dominions or principalities
or powers, all things were created by Him and for Him. Oh, I've got a strong advocate,
haven't I? I've got one that has the power
because He made everything, even the powers of darkness were created
by Him, even the wicked for the day of evil. And not only that,
but who is this One in whom I trust? He's before all things. He said
to the Father, glorify Me with the glory which I had with Thee
before the world was. He's before all things. And by
Him everything consists, that is, everything's held together.
My, I've got a good hope, haven't I? He's created, He's God in human
flesh. He's the beginning of the creation
of God. He's the creator of all things. Everything was made by
Him and for Him. He's before all things. By Him,
everything's held together. Now what? And He's the head.
He's the head of the body, the kingdom, the family. He's the
head of the church. He's the beginning. He's the
firstborn from the dead. He's the first one to rise to
die no more. You say, Lazarus raised, died
too. He's the first one to rise with an incorruptible body, never
to die again. And he's the one in all things
that has all preeminence. Think about this. In sonship,
no one's a son like him. In election, he's the first chosen.
In the covenant, he's the surety and the mediator and the messenger.
In redemption, He wrought it and bought it. In life, in Him
is life. He said, I'll quicken whom I
will. In resurrection, He said, I am the resurrection. In glory,
it says, all men shall glorify the Son as they glorify the Father. And verse 19 says, And it pleased
the Father that in Him should all fullness dwell, all the fullness
of God's wisdom, God's grace, God's holiness, God's righteousness,
God's mercy, God's love, God's peace, God's rest, God's joy,
He is literally the fountain of all spiritual righteousness. My soul. And not only that, watch
verse 20, and He made peace. He's the peacemaker, He's the
King of peace. And having made peace through
the blood of His cross, by Him to reconcile all things unto
Himself, unto the Father, unto God, unto Himself. We were out of whack. We were
enemies, aliens, strangers to God, without hope, without God,
without Christ in this world, having no hope. But he came down
here like you played a minute ago and became a man, a conqueror.
And he conquered the kingdom of darkness. He conquered all
evil. He obeyed the law. He satisfied
justice. He made peace between us and
God. He reconciled. What do you do
when you reconcile two people? You bring them back together. Established friendship. He literally
made peace with God. There's no more war. There's
no more conflict. And he reconciled all things
unto himself. I say, listen, by him, things
already in heaven and things on earth. That is, Abraham and
Isaac were already in heaven when Christ died. And some people
were on this earth when Christ died. And when he died, he literally
reconciled everybody whom God transferred, everybody whom God
translated, everyone whom God took out of the kingdom of darkness
and put them in the kingdom of God's dear Son. His Son came
down here in due time, in the fullness of time, and made peace
and reconciled them to God. Everybody was in heaven at that
time, everybody on earth, and look at the next line, and you.
I'm glad that's there. And you, who were not here when
He died, you who were not even thought of when He died by anything
on heaven, thank God we were thought of in glory. God said,
I chose you before the world began. And you, He made peace
for you. He reconciled you who were at
one time alienated enemies. We weren't enemies only because
of what Adam did. We were enemies because we were
enemies ourselves. And where was the enmity? Somebody
says, well, I never did do anybody any harm. The enmity was in our
minds. That's where this battle is fought,
Cecil. And people today are enemies
of the true and living God. Because they want to put a God
in his place. I don't think God ought to be
like he says. I think God ought to be like I say. That's an enemy
in your mind. We were enemies in our minds
by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled. How'd he do it? In the body of his flesh. In the body of his flesh. As a man, through death, through
death, Water won't put it away. Won't do it. Won't do it. Well, I was baptized. Well, didn't help you, did it? The
wafer and the wine won't do it. Forty-eleven trips down this
aisle to shake the preacher's hand won't do it. Won't put it
away. Won't do it. In the body of His
flesh through death. to present you now what's this
present you and and it just makes me it's cold here but up down
my back i don't know let all the religious world claim to
be holy men of god and all these things in christ i'm a man of
god in christ i'm holy but in my place well it's no good thing
and in the place no man can please god All because of His purpose
and grace, all because of the death of His Son, all because
He loved me and set His love upon me. And His Son came down
here and died and went back to glory, intercedes for us. He's
going to present us, you listen, holy, holy, holy, unblameable. Think about it now, unblameable. you know if we could get a hold
of this we'd get out of this depression wouldn't it we could
get a hold of this we'd get out of this this guilt feeling all the time
we ought to mourn over our sins who doesn't but i'm telling you
in christ i'm wholly unblameable and unreprovable who shall lay
anything to the charge of god's elect i'm unreprovable where
in god's sight and that's what counts not in your side, and
you're not in my side. You see a lot of faults in me,
and I can see one or two in you. But thank God, in Christ's righteousness,
God can't see any fault in me. I have none. I'm holy, unblameable,
and unreprovable, in God's sight. Isn't that something? He made
us qualified. And the only way, I tell you,
who's going to enter heaven? Perfect people. holy people,
unblameable people, unreprovable people, because they're fit to
enter. You say, well, nobody like that
on this earth. You're dead right. Not by birth, not by nature,
not by practice, not by action, not by religion. That's right. Preachers least of all. But He
has made us fit. And in Him, I'm unblameable. Now, what's the next verse? if
you continue in the faith. What is the faith here? It's
not a denomination, not a doctrine. It's the faith of the Son of
God. And I feel like the Apostle Peter.
I don't have anywhere else to go. There is no other faith. There
is no other place of security. There's no other hope. You say,
you're going to change your religion? I don't have religion. I have Christ. And there's nothing. He has no competitor. He has
no rival. He said to his disciples, you
go away. They said, to whom? You have
the words of life. So I'm going to continue in the
faith of God's Son. Now watch this. And the word
continue, time. Oh, my friend, remember I said
this years from now. but time is the strongest and
most undisputable test of a man's profession. That's right. Time is the strongest and the
most undisputable evidence of a man's profession. I had a friend
one time This person asked him, said, well, do you think I'm
a believer? He said, I don't know. See me in about 30 years,
and I'll tell you. That's right. If you continue. You see, a lot
of folks, a lot of folks get excited and emotional and make
decisions and join the church and change, they switch doctrines
and denominations and all these things. Some fella talks him
into something, another one talks it out of him. Let me tell you
something. A man whom God, in His great power and grace, sets
His love upon him and lifts him according to His will and purpose
out of the kingdom of darkness and transfers him into the kingdom
of God's dear Son and loosens him and washes him and redeems
him and regenerates him, he'll be around when God calls him. That's exactly right. If you
continue in the faith grounded, grounded, grounded on what? You
dig deep and found the rock, you're grounded on the rock,
the rock Christ Jesus. You're grounded and you settle.
You see, both houses, one built on the sand, one on the rock,
both of them were tried, the same trials fell on both houses. The winds blew, the floods came,
And the rains came. And one house fell. It was there
for a while, but then it fell. The other house also. And these
preachers tell you, if you're saved, you won't have any more
sickness, no more problems, no more, they're liars. You might
have more. Because God's going to try your
faith. Don't tell a man if he ties God a cross for him, it
ain't so. God will cross for him if he
pleases to. Not because he does anything.
But the wind's gonna blow on that house, and the rain's gonna
fall on that house, and the floods are gonna swamp that house. But
it stood. Why did it stand? Well, it was
a stronger house. It was not. Well, it was built
better. It was not. It was founded on
the rock. And that's what that says. If
you continue the faith, grounded and settled on the rock, and
be not moved away from the hope Nothing wrong with that word.
That's a good word. The hope of what? Of the gospel. The hope of the gospel. The gospel
is number one. The gospel. That's the gospel
of God's grace, the gospel of God's love, the gospel of God's
Son. Which you heard. And which was
preached to every creature which is under heaven. Whereupon Paul
had made a ministry. And the gospel's been preached
to many people. But he said in Hebrews, it didn't
profit them because it wasn't mixed with faith. I believe this
gospel. I believe it. I've been preaching
it now. This is 1990. I heard it in April 1950. Two
more months will be 40 years. 40 years. That may be all God
will give me, 40 years. Moses had 40 years. But I'll
tell you this. It'll do to live by, and bless
God, it'll do to die by. It's the hope. Try it. It's the hope. It's a good hope,
too. All right. Mike, come lead us in a hymn,
if you would.
Henry Mahan
About Henry Mahan

Henry T. Mahan was born in Birmingham, Alabama in August 1926. He joined the United States Navy in 1944 and served as a signalman on an L.S.T. in the Pacific during World War II. In 1946, he married his wife Doris, and the Lord blessed them with four children.

At the age of 21, he entered the pastoral ministry and gained broad experience as a pastor, teacher, conference speaker, and evangelist. In 1950, through the preaching of evangelist Rolfe Barnard, God was pleased to establish Henry in sovereign free grace teaching. At that time, he was serving as an assistant pastor at Pollard Baptist Church (off of Blackburn ave.) in Ashland, Kentucky.

In 1955, Thirteenth Street Baptist Church was formed in Ashland, Kentucky, and Henry was called to be its pastor. He faithfully served that congregation for more than 50 years, continuing in the same message throughout his ministry. His preaching was centered on the Lord Jesus Christ and Him crucified, in full accord with the Scriptures. He consistently proclaimed God’s sovereign purpose in salvation and the glory of Christ in redeeming sinners through His blood and righteousness.

Henry T. Mahan also traveled widely, preaching in conferences and churches across the United States and beyond. His ministry was marked by a clear and unwavering emphasis on Christ, not the preacher, but the One preached. Those who heard him recognized that his sermons honored the Savior and exalted the name of the Lord Jesus Christ above all.

Henry T. Mahan served as pastor and teacher of Thirteenth Street Baptist Church in Ashland, Kentucky for over half a century. His life and ministry were devoted to proclaiming the sovereign grace of God and directing sinners to the finished work of Christ. He entered into the presence of the Lord in 2019, leaving behind a lasting testimony to the gospel he faithfully preached.
