John chapter 1, first of all,
verse 7, talking about this man sent from God whose name was
John, said he came for a witness to bear witness of the light. There was a man sent from God
whose name was John, and that person came for a witness, to
bear witness of the light. And then in verse 15 it says,
John, bear witness of him. And then in verse 34, summing
it all up, what he had to say on that occasion, he said, and
I saw and bear record, this is the Son of God. I'm saying that
John's one business, one business, was to bear witness to Jesus
Christ. That was why God raised him up.
That's why God gave him the miraculous gifts that he had. That's why
God sent him. He bear witness of Christ. And
you can't, listen to me, you can't account for John except
by looking to Christ. You cannot account for this strange
man, this man clothed in camel's hair, eating fruit from the locust
tree, wild honey, surviving in the wilderness, preaching in
the desert to whomever would come and hear him. You can't
account for this man's existence except by looking to Christ.
The one reason for John's existence, get me now, one reason for his
very existence is Jesus Christ. Other than that, there's no cause
for John even coming. There's no cause for his office,
forerunner of Christ. the announcer, the ambassador
of Christ. If you don't know Christ, if
you can't look to Christ, you can't even account for John.
There's no reason for his existence. His one business, his one reason
for existence was to bear witness for Christ. Now, I don't know
how to apply this to all men. I don't know how. I sat and thought
about this a long time, Friday. I don't know quite how to apply
this to all men. But I do know how to apply it
to those who preach. I do know how to apply it to
those who preach. I know how to apply it to a church. The one cause for the existence
of a preacher is Christ, and there ain't no other cause, no
other cause. The one reason for the existence
of a church is not to reform the community, it's not to set
the government straight, it's not to educate the children.
I beg your pardon, it's Christ. When John walked out there, in
front of anybody, when John took up his message to anybody, when
John appeared in any territory, on any occasion, whether he was
speaking to the PTA, or whether he was speaking to the Lions
Club, or whether he was speaking to a revival meeting, a Bible
conference, or whatever, his one cause for existence was Christ. And like one man said one time,
a prophet who is not engaged in his business is an embarrassment
to himself and everybody else. That's the reason our preachers
today are such embarrassments. They're not engaged in their
business. Now I say, like I said, I don't know how to apply that
to everybody, but I do know how to apply it to those who preach.
The Scripture says, Paul's talking, we preach Christ. We preach Christ
and Him crucified. He emphatically said, we preach
not ourselves. We preach not ourselves, but
Jesus Christ the Lord, ourselves your servants, for Christ's sake,
in relation to Christ. And then again, he said, when
he spoke to the great city of Corinth, there was no greater
city renowned for its philosophers, debaters, logicians, all these
people. Oh, they were men of influence.
They just met together to argue. They met together to reveal some
new thing they'd learned, all of their influential people and
politicians and so forth. Paul stood before them, and Paul
was a man who could have engaged in debate with these men. None
had seen what he had seen or heard what he had heard or experienced
what he had experienced. He was above many his equals,
he said. But he said to those people,
I am determined. Because this is the very reason
for my existence. This is the very reason for my
office. This is the very reason for this open door. I am determined. And the very fact that he was
determined indicates he could have done otherwise. Where a
person can't do otherwise, there's no determination. There's just
one door out of here, no use me saying I'm determined to use
that door. You can't make one, you'll have to use that. But
Paul said, I am determined. because there were other possibilities
open for him. But I am determined to know nothing
among you save Jesus Christ and Him crucified." Now, I realize
there are nations to be governed. I realize that. And I believe
God has given certain men gifts to take care of those necessities.
I know that there are laws to be made and enforced. I know
there are houses to be built. I know there are fires to be
put out. I know there are children to be educated. I know there
are sick people to be healed. I know there are multitudes to
be fed." Thank God for the farmer. And God has given men gifts to
take care of these necessities. But the business of those who
preach is to preach Christ. Now that's their business and
that's their calling and that's the cause of their existence.
He said, you are my witnesses. He said, you shall be witnesses
unto me. You shall be. in Jerusalem, Judea,
Samaria, and the uttermost parts of the earth. He said to his
disciples before he went back to the Father, he gave them one
commission before he ascended to the Father, and he said to
them in these words, all authority is given to me in heaven and
earth. I have all authority over all flesh. I'm not lacking in
power or dominion. I have all authority. Our Lord
Jesus Christ is not poor little Jesus boy, a sweet little Jesus
boy. He's the sovereign Lord of Lords
and King of Kings, who exercises dominion and majesty and power
over all the earth and over all the universe. The Father had
given it to him. It's his by decree. It's his
by design. It's his by purchase. He bought
this world. It belongs to him. Can I not
do with my own what I will? He said, therefore, you go into
all this world, which is my world, and you preach the gospel to
everybody. That's your business. That's
your commission. Turn neither to the right hand or to the left.
You go preach the gospel. And I'm saying this, if Elijah's
mantle has fallen upon any young Elijah, If Paul's mantle has
fallen upon any Timothy, the first blessed thing he'll realize
is you cannot account for his existence nor his office except
by seeing Christ, continue to look into Christ, and following
Christ. Turn with me to 2 Corinthians
5. 2 Corinthians chapter 5. Here Paul sums up his ministry. 2 Corinthians chapter 5, I think
it begins with verse 18. He gives that sovereign call
first, that sovereign declaration, lays that foundation. He said
all things are of God. All things are of God. He's the
first cause of all things. Who hath reconciled us to himself,
is peace between heaven and earth, between God and men. But he did
it by Jesus Christ, and he had given to us the ministry of reconciliation. Namely, here it is, that God
was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself. The one who
came down here, Jesus Christ, is God. God was in Christ. Not
imputing, charging their trespasses unto them, but unto Christ. And
God hath committed to us this word of reconciliation, this
good news of salvation, of redemption. Redemption is of God. And redemption
is in Christ. And redemption is accomplished
by Christ. And redemption is a free gift
of God to men through Christ. And God hath committed to us,
preachers, that word of reconciliation, so then we are ambassadors for
Christ. like an ambassador from the United
States to France. He doesn't represent any other
country, represents this country. He doesn't have any businesses
on the side. He'd be fired as an ambassador
immediately for conflict of interest if he went to France to promote
his oil company or went to France to promote his coal company.
or went to France to promote his sideline, he has to get rid
of those sidelines, anything that has reference to French
people. And he goes there solely as ambassador of this country.
And I am an ambassador for Christ. For Christ. As though God did
beseech you by us. As though when we speak, God's
speaking. And Christ said that, he that heareth you, heareth
me. He that despises you, despises him that sent me. as though God
did beseech you by us. We pray you in the stead of,
we're not the vicar of Christ by no means. We're the messengers
of Christ. There's a difference. We don't
claim to be his vicar. We don't claim to be able to
forgive sin. We don't claim to be able to
bless or curse. We don't claim to be able to put any curse upon
anybody. We don't have that kind of power. We just pray you in
Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God. Here's our message, for
God hath made Christ to be sin for us. Christ knew no sin, that
we sinners might be made by God's grace, the righteousness of God
in him. Five years before Charles Spurgeon
died, he died at 58, he was then 53 years old. He made this statement in a sermon
speaking to his congregation. I don't suppose there's ever
lived any more influential preacher, any greater preacher, other than
the apostles. But five years before he died,
he made this statement to his church. Brethren, I desire to
be like John the Baptist. I would have my thoughts and
my ministry concentrated upon the Lord Jesus Christ, His sacrifice,
His atoning death, His mediatorial work, henceforth and forevermore. During the little time that God
may spare me to lift up my voice in this wilderness to preach
to this congregation, by His grace I would bear witness to
the Lamb of God. The years may be short in which
I may preach to this flock. and they were five years. But
around the cross shall be to me the place of green pastures.
Around the cross from the sacrifice of my Lord shall flow the beautiful
still waters. Many others are dealing with
other things. Some, I doubt not faithfully,
others with evil intent. I leave them to their best or
to their worst. But at least one shall be separated
to nothing but the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. At least
there be one dedicated to atonement by the blood of the Son of God.
I know no Redeemer but Jesus Christ. I know no redemption
but by substitution, and I know no substitute but the Son of
God." Could any of us, could any of us adopt a more noble
resolution? I preach Christ." Well, basically,
let me give you three things here. Basically, basically, this
is what the whole Bible is all about. The Old Testament shouts
for all to hear, someone is coming. That's what the whole 39 books
of the Old Testament are. Somebody's coming. Somebody's
coming. That's what it's all about. The
Old Testament says someone's coming. And to that someone give
all the prophets witness. Way back here, they say Job's
the oldest book in the Bible. I wouldn't contest that or I
wouldn't promote it. I don't know. I didn't put it
together so I don't know who wrote the first one. But if Job
is the oldest book in the Bible, Job talked about somebody coming. He said, I know my Redeemer.
He said, write it on the tombstone. Put it in the rock with lead
forever. I know my Redeemer liveth. And
he's coming to this earth. And though worms destroy this
body, yet in my flesh I'm going to say to the Lord, someone's
coming. And when Moses sat down and wrote the book of Genesis,
Genesis the beginning, the very first thing in the book after
man had fallen, he quoted the Lord God who said, someone's
coming. Someone's coming. Someone is
going to be born of a woman. Someone is going to be a woman's
seed. Someone who will put down the
power of evil. Someone who will crush the head
of the serpent. Someone's coming. That's what
he said. He'll be a woman's seed. Why,
behold, the Lord Himself will give you a sign. A virgin shall
be with child and shall bring forth a son. And unto us a child
is born, unto us a son is given, and his name, the name of that
son will be Wonderful Counselor, the Mighty God, the Prince of
Peace, the Everlasting Father. That's who he is. Someone's coming. And Moses said to the people
of Israel, he'll be a prophet like me. God will raise up a
prophet from among the brethren. That's right, from among you,
God will raise up a prophet. And you listen to him. He'll
be a prophet like me. And Moses said not only that,
but he'll be from the tribe of Judah. Judah, the scepter will
not depart from Judah till someone comes. Shiloh will be his name. Shiloh will be his name. Prince
of Peace. And he'll be of the family of
Jesse, and he'll be of the house of David, and he'll sit on David's
throne. He'll be born in David's town,
Bethlehem, that someone. And he'll sit on David's throne
forever. Someone's coming. That's what
it's all about. And not only that Moses said,
but he's going to be a priest like Melchizedek. He said, all
you Jews know about Melchizedek. Because all of you know about
Abraham, and you know when Abraham got that group of folks together
and went down and rescued Lot and the kings, saved them from
the evil kings, and he came back, on his way back he met Melchizedek,
mysterious, majestic Melchizedek, who had no father or mother,
who had no ancestry. who had no beginning of days
or end of days, likened to the Son of God, who's a priest forever,
who blessed Abraham, who gave him bread and wine, my body,
my blood. He'll be a priest forever, not
like Aaron, but like Melchizedek. And he'll be a king, a mighty
king, king of kings and Lord of lords like David. And he'll
be a Passover lamb. When Egypt took the blood and
smeared it on the lintel and on the suicide post, they were
picturing there's someone who's coming. His blood will atone
for sin. His blood will be the protective
covering. When the Father sees the blood,
He'll pass over. He'll be the rock smitten. He'll
be the bread from heaven. He'll be the water of life. Someone's
coming! That's what the Old Testament
says. Someone's coming! It says that all the way through. He'll be a kinsman redeemer.
Why do you think God took all that space in his word to talk
about Boaz and Ruth? Think he's just telling a love
story? Oh, no. When that heathen girl born in
paganism was brought to Israel, an object of God's mercy, and
all of her heritage gone, all of her inheritance gone, all
of Naomi's inheritance gone, just poverty-stricken beggars,
bums. ragged bones, and here Boaz stood
as the kinsman-redeemer, the one related to them, the one
with the right, the one with the power, the one with the potential,
the one with the means to restore to them everything they lost,
their lost inheritance. He stood there as Christ, our
kinsman-redeemer, who restores all that we lost in Adam and
Moab. Just someone's coming. He'll be a shepherd of Israel.
If someone's coming, that's what the message is all about. That's
who they look for. Turn to Hebrews 11. We had it
in our lesson about two Sundays ago. He's coming. Look for Him.
Look for Him. God is faithful. He'll come.
Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, numbers all the way through. He's the
Passover lamb, he's the rock smitten, he's the brazen serpent
lifted up, he's the tabernacle, he's the priest, he's the atonement,
he's the lamb sacrificed, he's the altar, he's the art of the
covenant, he's the glory of God, he's everything and he's coming! That's what they said for 4,000
years, he's coming. Noah, and Abel, and Abraham,
and Lot, and Sarah, and Rebekah, and Isaac, and all of them looked
for him in verse 13, and they died, not having seen him in
the flesh, but only in faith. They saw him. Saw him the same
way you see him, by faith. Not having received the fulfillment
of the promise. not having seen him who came,
but having seen this fulfillment, this coming someone afar and
were persuaded of these promises and embraced these promises and
confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on this earth. They
died waiting for someone to come. That's what it's all about. And
that's what our Lord said in John 8, 56. Turn to that. I want you to look at that. John
8, 56. All these quarrelsome, pharisaical, logical, disciplinarians,
legalists, moralists, pharisees, denominationalists, sectarians. Abraham's our father. We have
the background, the heritage. And our Lord said in verse 56,
your father Abraham didn't look at something, he looked for someone. He rejoiced to see my day, he
saw it and was glad. Oh, that's what the Old Testament's
all about. Did you know that? Someone's coming! Someone's coming. Prophet, priest, king, messiah,
Christ, redeemer, deliverer, emancipator, refuge. Someone's
coming. Seed of woman, tribe of Judah,
family of Jesse, house of David, the Eternal One, Son of God. He's coming. And you know what
the epistles, what the Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John
tell us? You know what they tell us? Someone's already come. He's come. He's here. That's what they tell us. He's
already come. Look at Luke 7. Old John was
sitting down there in prison, the forerunner of Christ, the
last of the Old Testament prophets, sitting down there in prison.
He called two of his disciples. He said, why don't you contact
Jesus of Nazareth and ask Him something from me? Luke 19, verse
18. Want to look at it? Verse 19,
Luke chapter 7. Luke chapter 7, verse 19. You
with me? John called two of his disciples
and sent them to Jesus, saying, Art thou he that should come?
That's a good question. Are you the one that should come?
Are you the one for whom we look, or do we look for another? Well,
is he? Is he? I know Genesis through
Malachi says someone's coming. Someone's coming. And Matthew,
Mark, Luke, and John says, he has come. And John said, is this
really he of whom Moses wrote? Are you really the Christ? Are
you? Well, let the angels of God answer that question. The
angels of God on that evening came down and appeared to the
shepherds on the hillside. And they said to those shepherds,
he's come. He's come. Behold, we bring you
good tidings. He's come unto you, is born this
day in the city of David, where they said he'd be born, the Savior,
Christ the Lord. And you follow that star, and
you'll find a babe wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in
a manger. He's come. And that same angel
went to Joseph and said, don't be afraid to marry Mary. That
holy thing born of her shall be called the Son of God, Immanuel.
Call his name Jesus, he'll save his people from their sins. He
said to Mary, that holy thing in thee is called the Son of
God. The angels bear witness, he's
come. Let the forerunner John, supernaturally
born from an old woman, Elizabeth, and an old father, Zacharias.
And God struck his father dumb till he named him John. And when
they came to him and said, what's his name? And give him a name. And Zacharias wrote on a piece
of paper. He couldn't speak. God's judgment
was upon him. He wrote John. And when he wrote
John, the people said, that's a funny name. Who's named John? And when he wrote that, he praised
God. He spoke. That strange man, John, of whom
Christ said there's never risen for woman a greater man. What
did John say? Oh, the Lamb of God. Behold the
Lamb of God, who taketh away the sin of the world. Let the
Father answer that. Are thou he who should come,
or do we look for another? Are you the Christ? Are you? Let the Father answer that. This
is my beloved Son, in whom I'm well pleased. Hear Him! Let the
Scriptures answer that question, all the way through the Scriptures.
He fulfills every attribute. every characteristic of God.
The scriptures bear witness of me, he said. Let nature answer. Art thou he that should come?
Or do we look for another? Let the wind answer that question.
When he held out his hand, that wind stopped. Let the waves answer
that question that held him up when he walked on. He's the one. The water will tell you he's
the one. Let the fish who brought forth a coin for him to pay his
taxes. Let the bread which he touched
and multiplied at his touch and was able to feed 5,000. Let the
sun tell you that refused to shine when he died. Let the rocks
tell you that quaked and opened when he died. Let the graves
tell you that gave up the bodies when he died. You don't have
to listen to me. He said, the rocks will tell
you who I am. And if man keeps quiet, God will speak through
the rocks and send the man to hell. You do what you want to. You clam up if you want to. You
be embarrassed if you want to. You shy away from that declaration
in timidity and a phony humility if you want to. But the rocks
will tell you who he is. And that old sign up there will
tell you who he is. And the wind will tell you who
he is. And every pine tree will tell you who he is. And everything
he made will tell you who he is. And your own subdued, suppressed
conscience will tell you who he is. He's not without a witness. Up from the grave he arose with
a mighty triumph over his foes. He arose a victor over the dark
domain. He lives forever with his saints
to reign. He arose! Let Simeon tell you
who he is. Lord, I'll die now. I've seen
thy salvation. That's all a man needs to see
to get ready to die. He doesn't need to memorize anything.
He just needs to see Christ. He's ready. Let Thomas answer,
and all the doubting Thomas is who fell at his feet and said,
My Lord and my God, tell it here and tell it wherever God gives
you a place to preach. Someone has come. That's my message. Someone has come. Turn to John
4. someone has come." The whole Old Testament says, he's coming,
he's coming, he's coming. And the apostles went out and
declared, he's come, he has come, and he has died for our sins
according to the Scripture. And the woman at the well whose
path he crossed, whose heart he troubled, whose spirit he
made interested. She said in verse 25 of John
4, listen, the woman said, I know that Messiah's coming. See, everybody,
everybody had some working knowledge. They passed it down from parents
to children. They read the scriptures. They
read the writings of Moses. And even this woman with such
a mixed up life, such a confused life, Even this woman who worshiped
in form, Christ said, you don't know what you worship, but she
knew what the Old Testament prophets were saying. Someone's coming!
She knew that. And she said to Christ, I know
Messiah's coming who's called Christ. And I know when he comes,
he'll tell us everything we need to know. Everything. And our Lord said to her, I that
speak to thee am he. I'm he. And on another occasion
he said, if you believe not that I'm he, you'll die in your sins. I'm he. That's my message. That's
what John the Baptist was talking about. That's what he stood there
that day and declared, behold the Lamb of God. Preachers today
got everything but the message. They're talking about everybody
but the person. And the attention of congregations is drawn to
socials and all these different civil problems and all these
different emotions and confusions of a materialistic world. And
very few eyes are lifted up to behold him. He has come. He has come. And you know what
the epistles talk about? The Old Testament says someone's
coming. And Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John says someone has come.
He has come. And you know what the epistles
say? They say somebody's coming again. That's right. He's coming again. I tell you,
I don't know how, I tried to figure out yesterday how many
sermons I've preached. I've been preaching 35 years. And I preached on the radio every
day for 20 of those years and television, pulpits, media, I
guess maybe 15,000 sermons. And maybe God let me preach a
few more. But I believe the sum and subject and essence of all
those sermons, at least for the last 31 years, 32, 33 years,
has been someone is coming, someone has come, someone's coming again. If you've missed Christ, it's
not been because I hadn't told you about him. He will come again. You know,
his two comings to this earth are so interwoven in the Old
Testament. This is what the people who continually
look at his coming look really at two comings. And it confused
them. Someone said one time that the
first coming of Christ, here these people stood way back over
here, his first coming was way out there, a mountain, the coming
of Christ. And his second coming was way
out there, a mountain. And though those mountains were
2,000 years apart or more, when you look at it from back here,
they look like they were one in the same mountain. And they
got it confused. For they read about the coming
of a king, They read about the restoration of David's throne
and kingdom. They read about a new heaven
and a new earth. They read about a reign of righteousness. They read about the glory of
God being revealed on the earth, and the lamb shall lie down beside
the lion, and all of these things. And therefore, in looking for
a king, they missed the lamb, Bob. They missed the lamb. They
missed the lamb. And people today who are talking
about a restored kingdom are missing the lamb. Why can't we
see both, huh? Why can't we turn to Isaiah 53? Isaiah 53, you see, he's got
no kingdom until he comes and purchases the kingdom. He's got
no people until he sets them free. He's got no kingdom of
redeemed people until he redeems them. And the only way his people
can be redeemed is to have a perfect standing before the law and a
perfect holiness before justice. And so our Lord Jesus Christ
must come to the earth the first time as the Lamb, the Lamb, the
Lamb of God, the sacrifice, the sin offering. The atonement must
be made, the sacrifice of his blood, his body, the obedience
of his righteousness. the death on the cross, and then
he comes again as the king to set up a throne, the kingdom
of David. In Isaiah 53 verse 1, who hath
believed our report, our record? To whom is the arm of the Lord
revealed, the power of God? He'll grow up before him, not
as a king, but as a tender plant, a little baby, an infant, like
a little stalk of corn just peeping through the ground, so fragile
and tender, as a root out of a dry ground, as a man born to
a nation, Israel, that was nothing but dry ground, just a root,
didn't look like any life left in Israel, no power, politics,
or anything. He hath no form of covenant.
If he wasn't born in a palace in satin clothes on a silk pillar,
He had no form of comeliness. When we see him, there's no beauty
we should desire in him. He's despised, rejected of men. A man of sorrows, acquainted
with grief. We hid as it were our faces from him. He was despised.
We esteemed him not. But he hath borne our griefs
and carried our sorrows. We even esteemed him stricken,
smitten of God. Not only smitten of men, but
smitten of God and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions. He was bruised for our iniquities.
The chastisement of our peace was upon him when his stripes
were healed. Yes, Christ came first as the Lamb. He'll come
later as the Lion. He came as the Savior. He'll
come as the King. He'll come to establish His reign. He'll come to effectually, completely
bring forth the bodies of His people from the grave. And then
we shall be finally redeemed. Our salvation is nearer than
when we believed. He's coming. He said so. John 14. Turn to
John 14. He said so. John chapter 14.
Verse 1 through 3. And my friend, my part, listen
to me, in the future glory of Christ and eternal reign of Christ
will be determined not by my belief in His premillennial return
as a king or a tribulation or a millennium or a separation
of years and all that stuff. That's not going to determine
my part in that kingdom. My part in His kingdom future
kingdom will be determined by my faith in His first coming
as the Lamb. See what I'm saying? I've got
to have a substitute, a Lamb, a Redeemer. That's His essential
glory. That's His great glory. That's
His primary glory. He redeemed us. And because He
redeemed us, He reigns over us. But we're not to be taken up
with his future reign, we're to be taken up with his present
reign. We're not to be concerned so much for his future coming
as we are of his first coming. He redeemed us. That's what we
preach. John 14.1, he said to his disciples, let not your heart
be troubled. You believe in God, believe also
in me and my Father's house and many dwelling places. If it were
not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place, and
if I go and prepare a place, I will come again." Well, when's
he coming, preacher? Well, his disciples kept asking
him that. What will be the sign of your
coming? What will be the sign of the
restoration of the kingdom? He said, it's not for you to
know the times or the seasons. Those things are in my Father's
hands. It's not for you to know. Not even the angels know. Why
should you know? Not even the angels of God. Only
God knows. Only God knows. And our business
is to preach the gospel. He said he was coming. The angels
said he was coming back. Look at Acts chapter 1. Acts
chapter 1 here in verse 10 and 11, the disciples were standing
around on that mountain when Christ ascended back to the Father,
and as they stood there, the angels of God appeared to them
and said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven?
This same Jesus which is taken up from you into heaven shall
so come in like manner as you seen him go. He's coming back. He's coming back. The Apostle
said, so I would not have you ignorant concerning them which
sleep. The Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout,
with the voice of the archangel, the trumpet of God shall sound,
and the dead in Christ shall rise, and we which are alive
and remain shall be chained and caught up together with them
in the air to meet the Lord, and so shall we ever be with
the Lord. Comfort one another with these words. He's coming
again. That's what it's all about. The
Old Testament says somebody's coming. Somebody's coming. In the New Testament, the gospel
says He's come. He's come. And the epistles say,
He's done His work, and the Father raised Him from the dead, and
exalted Him, and gave Him a name above every name, that at the
name of Jesus every knee will bow, and every tongue will confess
that He's Lord, in heaven, earth, and hell, to the glory of God.
He's coming back!
Henry Mahan
About Henry Mahan

Henry T. Mahan was born in Birmingham, Alabama in August 1926. He joined the United States Navy in 1944 and served as a signalman on an L.S.T. in the Pacific during World War II. In 1946, he married his wife Doris, and the Lord blessed them with four children.

At the age of 21, he entered the pastoral ministry and gained broad experience as a pastor, teacher, conference speaker, and evangelist. In 1950, through the preaching of evangelist Rolfe Barnard, God was pleased to establish Henry in sovereign free grace teaching. At that time, he was serving as an assistant pastor at Pollard Baptist Church (off of Blackburn ave.) in Ashland, Kentucky.

In 1955, Thirteenth Street Baptist Church was formed in Ashland, Kentucky, and Henry was called to be its pastor. He faithfully served that congregation for more than 50 years, continuing in the same message throughout his ministry. His preaching was centered on the Lord Jesus Christ and Him crucified, in full accord with the Scriptures. He consistently proclaimed God’s sovereign purpose in salvation and the glory of Christ in redeeming sinners through His blood and righteousness.

Henry T. Mahan also traveled widely, preaching in conferences and churches across the United States and beyond. His ministry was marked by a clear and unwavering emphasis on Christ, not the preacher, but the One preached. Those who heard him recognized that his sermons honored the Savior and exalted the name of the Lord Jesus Christ above all.

Henry T. Mahan served as pastor and teacher of Thirteenth Street Baptist Church in Ashland, Kentucky for over half a century. His life and ministry were devoted to proclaiming the sovereign grace of God and directing sinners to the finished work of Christ. He entered into the presence of the Lord in 2019, leaving behind a lasting testimony to the gospel he faithfully preached.
